Vista Changes to Palm OS

Just got new laptop with Vista, of course.  Downloaded Palm OS from site, synced and all info transferred great.  However, "Color coding of events in the Calendar is no longer supported" according to Palm website.  Anyone know why calendar categories no longer have color options?  An update to fix?  Can I transfer from my old computer?  Thanks in advance for any insight!

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
Your question has been asked (and answered) many times.   Search and ye shall find...
The short answer is no, Palm Desktop 6.2 by Access does not support color coding on the desktop.  It's just the way it is, and there is no information as to whether any new release will be issued to address the issue.

  • Viewing Vista Folder Containing Palm Stuff Crashes Window Explorer

    After I install the Palm software, it creates a directory in my Documents folder.  When I open the Documents folder, Windows Explorer crashes.  After I uninstall the Palm software, I have no further issues.  So, I tried to be clever and create a folder called Palm Stuff and installed the software in that folder.  This worked, excdept when I sync for the first time, it creates a new folder in the Documents folder for the synced info and I am back to where I was.  How can I change where that folder is created when I sync?

    Post relates to: Centro (AT&T)

    There are registry entries that need to be deleted to completely remove Palm desktop. Here are the uninstall instructions.
    You should first make a copy of your data to have just in case something
    happens. You can find your data files by going to Start --> Documents -->
    Palm OS Desktop. Highlight your Palm Desktop username and right click and
    copy. Then go to your PC desktop right click on a blank spot and select paste.
    Now you want to uninstall Palm Desktop and remove everything that has to do
    with Palm Desktop from your computer.
    Go to the following locations on the PC and delete the folders listed below.
    C:\Program Files\Palm or Palm One
    C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Palm or
    PalmOne
    C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata
    *Note you may need to view hidden folders to get to appdata. To do that go
    into your control panel and open folder options. Go to view tab and uncheck
    hide hidden files.
    Once this is done you will need to delete some registry keys from your PC Operating System.
    Word of warning, going here and deleting the wrong thing can cause your PC
    from starting up, crashing and deletion of programs and data. If you feel
    you are unsure of yourself, see if you have a friend that can help you or a
    PC technician that you can pay to help you. This procedure will show them everything they need to delete. To make sure we have a good copy of the current registry, we need to do a backup of the Registry.
    Go to start on the PC, in the search field type "regedit.exe" without quotes.
    Highlight COMPUTER, go to File --> Export. Should pop up with a Save As box.
    Current location is fine, should be in My Documents or save to a location you will remember. In the file name on the bottom type "backup[todaysdate]" i.e. backup07072008. Next, the hard part.
    The easiest way to make sure your working with the correct key, highlight the key i.e. palm quick install, and press delete on your keyboard. It will ask you, are you sure. Say yes. Do the same thing for all keys below.
    If you make a mistake, stop what you are doing. And call a PC technician.
    BUT do not turn off your computer.
    The reg keys are as follows (Note: some of theses reg keys will not be here
    but if they are delete them)
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Palm Quick Install
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\PalmOne File Transfer
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm, Inc.
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmDesktopAutorun
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\palmOne
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmSource
    * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PalmSource or anything else that says palm
    Next reboot your computer.
    Then reinstall your palm desktop from the CD and do a hotsync. When it asks for a username, use the name that is in the upper right corner of the hotsync application on your Centro.

  • Windows Vista: changes in ISAKMP

    Has anybody experienced problems with Windows Vista? We have hundreds of customers which successfully connect to our Cisco router from Windows XP. They manually (via wizard) create VPN-connection using their login, pswd and preshared key (all other settings are set to defaults). Router is configured to use transport mode, l2tp, 3DES, MD5, DH group 2, and a preshared key. But when they try to establish the same VPN-connection on Vista they most often get error 789 (negotiation failed). May be there is some new policy or enabled option which affects ISAKMP in Windows Vista?

    The problem proved to be simple: we had only one ISAKMP policy (encryption: 3DES, hash: MD5) and it was o.k. with Windows XP. But in Windows Vista MD5 is removed. Though it's possible to get back MD5 by editing registry of operating system, we just added another ISAKMP policy with "Secure Hash Standard" istead of "Message Digest 5" as hash algorithm.

    Hello teenagarcia, you'll need to perform a Hard Reset on the TX and start all over again.
    To perform a Hard Reset:
    While pressing and holding the Power button down, tap and release the Reset button in back and continue to hold the Power button down. When the grey Palm logo appears, you can release the Power button.
    You should now see the warning page in about 5 languages. Press the UP direction on the 5-way pad to complete the task. Your Palm will reset itself several times as it re-installs the original programs and erases all your previous data.
    You will be given a choice of language to use.  During the whole process, the TX will reset itself several times as it reinstalls the original programs.

    Hello.  I have had my palm for almost 3 years.  Just recently I had a blob on my calendar.  To fix that I had to download Access, since I have Windows Vista.  It is working fine now, but how do I put photos on my palm?  I used Splash Photo before, but now have media on Access.  I have the photos on the Palm Desktop, but when I try to move them to install it says it is not supported.  Is the install tool not compatible with Vista? It was my understanding that that is what Access is for.  Please help me!!

    You need to install the spash photo on the PC so the conduits in the Hotsync manager and be updated to sync photos. You will need your Z22 CD.
    Put the CD in. It should try to install if it does just cancel it if not don't worry less for you to do.
    Next you want to go into your computer. From there right click on the CD ROM drive and either click open or explore.
    Then select English.
    Then Photos.
    Then double click on splashphoto.exe.

  • WINDOWS VISTA 64-Bit PALM SYNC

    I just bought a brand new Dell 1440Z for school. I was super excited to sync my palm centro to it. After lots of screwing around I ended up on Palms Support pages only to find you cannot use a USB cable to sync with a 64 bit windows OS. I don't have Bluetooth capability or infared on my Cpu. It would appear I'm just out of luck ~?? I wonder why I bought a new phone hat will not Synce with a new laptop. Does Palm plan on doing anything about this other then telling people to use Bluetooth?
    Post relates to: Centro (Sprint)

    Hello and welcome to the forums -
    At this time, there is no information on whether or not USB support may be an option in the future, so the only options available at this time for 64-bit systems (and this will include Windows 7 64-bit versions) are Bluetooth or IR. This is because there are no compatible USB drivers. Many users have had success in using a Bluetooth adapter, available at many online and physical retailers for very cheap.
    Hope this helps and good luck,

     I don't use Windows Media Player, but I was under the impression that to use WMP 11, you needed to upgrade Pocket Tunes on the Centro.
     The NormSoft knowledge base can be found here.
     I would use the check for updates feature in pTunes on your Treo to see if there is an update available for your install of pTunes 4.x.  To do this, open pTunes, and select Menu > Help > Check for Updates...
     I'm running version 4.0.7 on my Treo 755p and I know that version 5.0 has been relesed for Palm OS devices.

  • Conduit confusion - Palm TX on Vista

    Have got myself into a muddle and am scared of losing years of diary data. My wife has used Palms for years and was last using a T3 with the Palm Desktop software. This began to show its age and we decided to bite the bullet and go down Windows Mobile route with Vista Mobile Device Centre. This turned out to be a bit of a disaster and un-nerved her. I noticed that Palm TX was still available so decided to return to the Palm fold. After very careful steps the transfer to the new TX was achieved with sync to Palm Desktop (now called Access) and all appeared well but Hot Sync failed in the middle of synching Databook. The PC froze and only a forced shut down got me out of it. On the theory that the PC  desktop file was corrupt I installed the Desktop software on my own Vista machine to get a copy of the data off the TX. Again the sync failed so I am stymied.
    In looking at the Hot Sync confuguration I notice that there are conduits ticked for Databook and Calendar and also for Contacts and Addresses. I thought that these names were synonymous so I am confused.
    Can anyone cast light on this matter and a guide to getting out of it?
    Many thanks.

    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Glad to hear you resolved the issue with DBFixit.
    In answer to your other question, the Datebook/calendar and Address book/contacts are the PIM designations for Palm Desktop.
    Datebook and Address book was used for older devices and versions of Palm desktop. The newer devices and newer versions of Palm desktop use Calendar and Contacts.
    Here is a procedure for backing up your data from Palm desktop.
    The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each category in Palm Desktop to a seperate folder on your PC.
    Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name it something like Palm Desktop Data. Click on the link below and follow the instructions on that page for the export procedure.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=28734
    Make sure you select all for the range in the export window.
    With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard drive.
    Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data that was changed to that folder and save again to the external media.
    With this process you can always import the data back into Palm Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.

    To sync on your new 32-bit desktop you will need to download the Vista-compatible Palm Desktop 6.2.
    You will also need to install Documents To Go v.10 on the new desktop as well...should be fine with Vista.  From what I've seen of Beyond Contacts, you will need to upgrade to 3.0083 to gain Vista support.  I don't know if that's a paid upgrade or not.
    If any of your other third-party apps also have a desktop component or install a conduit for synchronization, you'll need to check with each of them to verify compatibility with Vista and Palm Desktop 6.2.
    When you connect to the new computer for the first time after you install Palm Desktop software, just select the TX's current Hotsync ID to sync with, and the data on the TX should automatically migrate into your new installation.  But it's always best to be safe rather than sorry.  Get a copy of NVBackup (google and download from any legit source such as www.palmgear.com ), and run a complete backup onto a SD card.  That way, you'll be minutes away from a full Restore if anything does happen in the transition.
    Lastly, if you plan to sync with your two computers, you will need to be careful and only use one of them for full 2-way synchronization, and use the other purely as a clone to hold a copy of the data on the handheld, using Handheld Overwrites Desktop conduit settings on that second computer.  Otherwise data corruption is sure to result.  This Palm Knowledgebase Article discusses how to Hotsync one device on two different desktops:

    Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

  • Documents to Go on Palm TX Syncing with Vista

    I cant seem to get my documents to sync with my Palm TX. Everytime I click on the Documents To Go icon on my Vista desktop it gives me a "Runtime error" message. Help! What do I do?
    Post relates to: Palm TX

    Plan B (free) is to create a folder on a SD card into which you copy (via your computer's SD reader/writer or a USB addition) the files you want your device's Docs2Go to use.
    Providing the installation of the Docs2Go was successful onto your TX via Vista, it'll read these and be able to edit and create new files. Granted, its not as seamless as a properly working Docs2Go as you swap files like this manually, but you regain functionality of the program on the device.
    You'll also want to disable the sync to Docs2Go via Hotsync > Custom > Documents to Go > and set its default as 'Do Nothing' and promptly forget Docs2Go exists on your machine. But don't uninstall it as this may also uninstall the device's version at the next Hotsync.
    Its really the sync portion of the Docs2Go that came with your TX that doesn't work in Vista - but as that's a major point of the software....
    I'm not sure how long you've had your TX or how long you've been on Vista - but given Palm is still selling its 3 year old TX, one might assume it would have been a nice gesture for DataViz to ensure the product that comes on the CD actally works with current OSs, yes? Apparently not - the upgrade for a Vista / Office 2007-friendly version runs at around $30. Which seems excessive given that the PalmOs is in its death throes.
    Hope Plan B works for you.

    I think I have been to every single board to find a solution.  I have a windows vista and my palm m515 wont hotsync.  It said to download pd 6.2.2 and palmhotsyncsetup from pimlicosoftware which I did and it still won't sync!!!!!!!!!! Very, very upset someone please help.
    Post relates to: Palm m515

    Hope this helps....  Having the same problem with PD 6.xxx  Using a Palm m515 with Vista Ultimate.  Can connect but no data transfers.  I tried to overwrite the newer palm desktop with an older version (know you're not supposed to do that, but???)  Got an error message saying a newer version was installed, and it quit.  Went to the control panel - add/remove software, and removed the newer palm desktop.  Then I downloaded the older (ver 4.1xx) and installed it.  Once it was up, the hotsync did NOT show a USB connect option, but apparently Vista and Palm don't really care, because it worked like a charm.  Hit the hotsyn button on the PDA and off we went.  Now I have to go to my wife's laptop (same OS and problem) and export a BUNCH of her stuff and do the same remove and install scenario.  Her laptop, her data, my problem - by marital default.

  • Datebook won't open after updating to palm 6.2

    HELP!
    I recently 'upgraded' to palm 6.2.  I have VISTA.
    Since then, I cannot open my datebook. Initially, I just couldn't put in new entries but now,  everytime I try to even open it to see the old entries, the entire Palm Desktop crashes and closes.  And the archive exported files are nowhere to be found either.
    In the place of 'Date,' I now have a program labeled 'Calendar' that I can use.  However, I have no acess to my old appointments in the datebook.
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

    Do the following;
    Make sure Palm desktop is closed or not in an error state. On the PC, look in my documents for PalmOS desktop. Locate your username folder. Look for the datebook or calendar folder. Rename it an add a .old extension to it. Open Palm desktop. If you have all your data on the handheld, change the hotsync manager conduits to handheld overwrites desktop and sync. You can also try to find the archive files for datebook/calendar. Do a search on your PC for the files with the extension of .aba. This should be the archived file for datebook, .aba means AddressBookArchive. If you find the files, use the import function in Palm desktop to import the file.

    You cannot sync 2 dissimilar devices to the same username, it will cause the issues you are experiencing.
    You need to have seperate usernames in Palm desktop for each device. Since you have lost data, you need to try and recover the data first. See the steps in the procedure listed below.
    After the data recovery and the data is correct in Palm desktop, you need to export the data from the current username, create a new username for the T3, export the data from the current username and then import to the username for the T3.
    Click on the following link to the kb.palm.com webpage for the article regarding Upgrading from a previous Palm OS handheld.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=12926
    You can recover the data from your user folder provided you have only sync'ed once with the PC when you discovered the data missing. When you sync to the PC there are files created for each PIM category in your user folder. For Example; datebook.dat or datebook (Depending on the version of Palm Desktop) and datebook.bak. On Vista the file names are .mdb and mdb.bak.
    The files are named .dat and .bak. When you sync, the current data is stored in .dat. The next time you sync the data in the .dat file is copied to the .bak file. You can rename the .dat to .old. then rename the .bak to .dat. If the data in the .bak file is intact, it will now be in palm desktop when you reopen Palm desktop. I have included a link to show you how to find the userfolder on the PC.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=26674
    Here is another link regarding data loss;
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=39503
    The best way to backup your data is to use the export feature in Palm Desktop. Make a new folder on the PC desktop named Palm Desktop Backup data. Next, select the category you want to export. You will get a window that asks where you want to save the file, save in the folder created on the desktop. There is a button that allows you to select currently selected record or all, select all. If you don't select all, then only the record highlighted is exported. You will then need to name the file for export, I suggest the name of the category, eg: datebook (With current date). Do this for all critical data in each category. With the data exported to the folder on the PC desktop, you can save this data to a flash drive, external hard drive or a CD-RW. With this method you will have your data in a seperate place than Palm desktop and the device. If you "Lose" data again, you can import the data back into palm desktop.
    Make sure that when you make changes in palm desktop or the device to export the data to the folder created for the backup.
