Vista issues w. Treo 755p

My Vista-running laptop just downloaded the Service Pack 1 update for Vista, and now my Palm desktop, to which I sync, has gone nuts, either showing NO info for calendar or contacts, or showing it with the error message "An invaliud argument was encountered."  At least my Treo data is good, but cannot now sync my Treo w. Palm Desktop and get good data on the other (laptop) side.  Any thoughts?
Otherwise, am planning to go Outlook 2007, down the road, since Vista and Office XP Pro 2002's Outlook don't play well together either...

Thx Alan.
Let me preface all this by saying that I never had any sync problems btw my Treo 755p and either Outlook or Palm Desktop, until I had to do a full system recovery, using new-issue Vista Recovery Disks, after a full back-up to an external hard drive.  After the Recovery, Outlook (Office XP 2002's version, which I had been syncing to) stopped working entirely, so I have ordered Outlook 2007, and switched syncing to the Palm Desktop, which itself was working fine until the Vista SP1 upgrade.  My machine's (Sony Vaio SZ650N laptop) help line told me they thought that since M'soft had stopped supporting all Office 2002 apps, that there must have been some later Vista upgrade that interfered with my "old" Outlook, and to get the newer version, which has not yet arrived.
I uninstalled the Vista SP1 (using "Uninstall") upgrade, and Restored my machine to the last date of "good" operation before the SP1 download. I've uninstalled/reinstalled Palm 6.2.2 several times, both using "Uninstall" utility, plus cleaning out all the left-behind Palm files, per the suggestions of another poster (which also agreed w. the Palm support rep, who I called).  Now the Palm Desktop works fine, outwardly, but the Datebook and Address book data have disappeared, and I cannot locate their "old" file locations.
Now -- after all that -- when I sync to Palm desktop, the sync "hangs" on the Datebook step (2 of 12), and I'm "syncing" using the HH-overwrites-PC conduit setting.   The only way I can "unhang" the Treo is to "cancel" and unplug the USB cable, which then gives me a "connection broken/sync aborted" message...the only way the desktop sync can be unhung is to shut it down using Task Manager function...the desktop "cancel" is useless.
My Treo Calendar and Contacts remain unsullied, so far, so I'm using my handheld exclusively.
Am going balder by the day...anyone have any thoughts?

    Hello,
I am wondering if the latest software update will allow me to sync using HotSync and a cable.  When I got my 755 it said that it was not compatible with my new computer that has the 64 bit Vista.  Is this going to be fixed eventually or should I just give up and sync onto another computer with XP?  Thanks.

Obviously this is one of the strangest anti-business responses from a for-profit company I have heard of, but I can't even get the bluetooth workaround to work because as soon as I start to install the setup, it immediately stops and says it was interrupted.  This was a clean install of Windows Vista 64 Business, with no antivirus software running (or even installed yet).  I downloaded the install software yesterday, even tried downloading it again to make sure.  I even tried loading prior versions of it, all to no avail.  They simply will not install saying they got interrupted.  If there is some magic to allow this to work, my wife and I would be quite grateful.  If not, hello blackberry!  Palm is forcing my hand here and running off a loyal customer that has bought one of (almost) every model since the original palm pilot, lo those many years ago.
Does anyone have a solution to the "installation was interrupted" issue on Windows Vista 64 ?

  • Has a solution been found for the Treo 755p FREEZING issue?

I have been an owner of a Treo 755p (Verizon Wireless) for 18 months now, and have had freezing issues since day one. I love the phone and don't want to get rid of it, but the freezing issue I think are getting more frequent, and I am at the end of my rope. I have been trying to hold out to see if the Treo Pro would finally come to Verizon Wireless, but if I can't resolve the freezing (10-15 seconds) issue I might upgrade to a Windows 6.1 phone.
Has there been any patches or scenarios released on how to fix this?
I have no 3rd party software installed, and it has the latest updates.

If there is something in the backup folder, in your username folder on the PC, that is causing an issue we need to rename the backup folder and hard reset the Treo.
    Go to http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=887 and follow the directions to do a hard reset. Next before you hotsync your data back over you will need to rename your backup folder, to do that go here;
    XP
C:\program files\palm or palm one\[hotsync username]\ and rename your backup
    folder to backup.old
    Vista
Start-->documents\Palm OS Desktop\[hotsync username]\ and rename your backup
    folder to backup.old
Then hotsync to your current hotsync name and all your contacts, calendar,
tasks, and memos will come back over.
Show file extensions for XP or Vista
    XP
If you can not view file extensions on your PC I would like you to open a
folder go to Tools-->Folder Options--> View (tab) and under show hidden
files and folders uncheck hide file extensions for known file types.
    Vista
Open control Panel go to Folder Options--> View (tab) and under show hidden

  • Help, hotsync palm treo 755p to my laptop with windows vista 64 bit.

I am computer unsavy and could use some help.  I have a palm treo 755p that previously synced with my old dell laptop.  That computer broke, and I got a new HP with windows vista 64 bit.  Previously, the dell was running windows xp.  I have bought some new software, which I have downloaded to my laptop, and am trying to sync my palm to the new computer so that I can download the program to the computer.  However, after installing the Palm Hotsync Manager and other software, and when I trying to sync, the computer does not seem to recognized my palm, and times out after a while stating "the connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established.  Please check your setup and try again.

  • Daylight Savings Time issue with Palm Treo 755p/Missing Sync 6.0.6

I'm not sure where the fault is, but here's what a user sees here:
User has a Palm Treo 755p with the 1.08 software installed.
Since DST on March 14th, when he syncs the iCal information to the phone using Missing Sync 6.0.6, the information on the phone is pushed ahead one hour.
But the odd thing about it is how it shows on the phone.
User created a repeating event from March 12-20 from 9-10 a.m. called "test 9" for an example of this.
On March 12 and 13, this shows as "test 9" -- at 9:00 on the Treo
From the 14th on, it shows as: "test 9 (9 am EST)" -- but it is entered at *10:00* a.m.
What I don't know is if this is a Missing Sync issue or a Palm OS issue.
User's computer is running 10.6.2 -- and both computer and Palm are in the Eastern time zone.
I'm open for suggestions here -- is this a *Palm* issue? Or something else?
    Thanks!

We "fixed" this by noticing that -- for whatever reason -- Detroit (we're in Ann Arbor, actually) shows as "Eastern Standard Time" where it seems that every other major city in the time zone (Columbus, Indianapolis, New York, Miami, Philadelphia, etc...) shows as "Eastern Time".
So we set up iCal on this computer to use New York ("Eastern Time") and all the events added to iCal after that synced properly.
I tried to add "Detroit" to the Palm, but had no luck in syncing with that.  I think the "Eastern Time" thing is key.   I have a Bug Report into Apple about the fact that the time zone seems wrong for us.
That said, while I could  change pre-existing events from "Eastern Standard Time" to "Eastern Time" in iCal, those events did *NOT* sync to the Palm correctly.
The user had to delete/readd the events in the right "time zone" to get them to sync correctly.
I'd be curious to know if this solution (?) works for you as well.

I ask you the same question we ask everyone else having problems with Win7 - what version of Win7 do you have?  32bit or 64bit?
It's well known that you cannot sync via USB cable to any 64bit OS - Access (the company that owns Palm Desktop) never bothered to write drivers for XP/Vista/Win 7 64bit versions!
Only workaround is syncing via a wireless method - BlueTooth, Infra-red, or Wifi.

You can try a hard reset to bring the device back to factory defaults, and then test for same issue without hotsyncing. If the problem reoccurs then there is a hardware issue with the device, and it will need a repair / replacement. If the hard reset resolves this problem then there is a software issue. All data on the device will be lost with a hard reset and the device needs to be backed up first. Follow theses steps to perform a hard reset:
    You may need to hard reset your device and rename your backup folder. Go to http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=887 and follow the directions to do a hard reset. Next before you hotsync your data back over you will need to rename your backup folder, to do that go here;

tasks, and memos will come back over.

  • Hot Synch does not work, Treo 755p, USB, 17" Mac Pro Laptop, even with RevD installed and Allow other HotSynch applications preference check box checked

    Hi,
I am a long time Palm enthusiast who is frustrated.  No more Palm products for me or anyone I speak to until I solve this problem.  Someone at Palm should be paying attention to their long time cusotmers.  I bought Palms in 2002 and 2003.
The support literature coming with two Treo 755p that I bought was so poor that never saw the fine print that there was three months of support if I registered the devices.  The registration page does not let me register.  All the fields are ghosted after I put in the serial number.  I bought one in June 2008 and the other in early 2008.  So never registered and can get no help from Palm now it seems.
So beside that gripe below is the problem issue info.
I can't get a Verizon Treo 755p to USB cable Hot Synch with my daughters 17" Mac Pro Laptop.  It is using OS 10.5x  She lives in another city so I am trouble shooting this remotely.
Did - Revd Palm upgrage has been installed.
    PalmDesktopMac421Revd.dmg (17MB)
    http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=4518,E=0000000000255177998,K=6239,Sxi=3,case=obj(33...
Did in advanced settings on the Treo select in the Synch preferences allow other Hot Sync applications.
That process worked however on my own Treo 755p Verizon as below:
After much work, hours over several months, I got my my Treo 755p Verizon to Hot Synch with a QuickSilver desk top Mac running os 10.5x.
    Did the RevD upgrade.
Did in advanced settings on the Treo select in the Synch preferences allow other Hot Sync applications.   Otherwise the Wireless Synch feature prevents a Hot Synch.
Once those both were done than Hot Synch works fine, and Wireless Synch works fine and does not interfere.
The Wireless on both PDAs is scheduled to be removed on both Treos due the economy on Feb. 4th, so I would like the HotSynch to be working so her Treo is backed up.
Thanks so much to anyone who replies to help out.

  • Open Letter to Palm Regarding the Palm Treo 755p

    Dear Palm,
As a devoted Palm user for the past 15+ years, I have been praising the versatility, convenience and user friendly Palm hardware/software to my colleagues and family for as many years. As a result many have purchased Palm products and have come to rely upon them as much as I do.
Recently I finally gave in and took the leap to consolidate my multiple media devices (laptop: email, phone: calls, Palm TX:notes, passwords, video, books, spreadsheets, contacts, calendar, etc.) into one unit with the Palm Treo 755p. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO DISAPOINTED IN A PALM PRODUCT! After transferring all of my info from my TX to my 755p, and activating the phone itself, I began the process of setting up my VersaMail account to enable me to sync my work email through the Exchange ActiveSync program. In typical Palm fashion, it was fairly easy to set up once I had obtained the necessary info from my IT department and I was soon getting my email in the Palm of my hand (pun intended). All was well! Or so it seemed...
Shortly after getting everything set up, I contacted my Dr. to set up an appointment later this month, and, in typical fashion, I opened my Palm Desktop Manager to update my calendar with the appointment so I could sync it up with my Palm during the next HotSync. After performing the HotSync, I realized that not only did the appointment NOT transfer from the Palm Desktop, ALL of my personal contacts and calendar events had been forced into my work email account!! I immediately became alarmed because I do not want my personal life (i.e. Dr. appointments, church activities, etc.) advertised to those whom I have granted rights to work on my work email account when requested to do so. I immediately sought out help from the Palm.com help forums and found that MANY people were experiencing the same problem. I performed all of the tricks that I could find (erasing everything, reloading software, hard resets, etc.) but no luck; I could not keep my personal information (contacts & calendar) in Palm Desktop and use my VersaMail for just that - MAIL. After researching further, I found that when using either the Exchange ActiveSync setup or the GetGood program, that the user is forced to surrender all options related to how the calendar and contacts are handled - DESPITE the options built into the program that indicate otherwise. I have since removed all email synchronization accounts from my 755p and have been attempting to re-establish the ability to successfully HotSync my calendar and contact information with the Palm Desktop Manager. I am also working with my IT department to see about the possibility of establishing a POP3 account for my work email - which in my opinion is a completely inferior option; in addition to being most likely unavailable despite the fact that many in the company of 60,000 employees are now facing the same problem with their own Palm Treo devices
    - I now have a phone/PDA that does not do what it was advertised to do.
    - I have lost my confidence and faith in Palm (this did not come lightly; I have been attempting to work through this issue for the past two weeks in all of my spare time).
    - I am still unable to successfully HotSync my contact/calendar info with the Palm Desktop Manager (despite hard reset on the phone & no associated email accounts on the phone) & it does not indicate why (it does not revert to "do nothing" in the manager as it did previously).
    - I have no way to check my work email account remotely.
    - Unfortunately because of schedule limitations I do not have the time to sit on the phone with Palm Tech Support, I have been completely unsuccessful in launching the technical support chat program, and I have been unable to find any type of email address where I could express my concerns in a more professional manner, rather than airing this over a worldwide forum.
Does anyone have any advice, knowledge, fixes, hacks, etc. that can help? I really don't want to lose the investment (time and financial) I made in this upgrade, and I REALLY do NOT want to move over to the dark side (Blackberry).
Most of all, and scoff/call me old fashioned all you want, I do not want to give up on Palm. I still feel that they are a good company that cares about their customers and provides (for the most part) a quality product and I would prefer to give them the brand loyalty I have for the past years, and hopefully many to come.
This is my first time using this venue to communicate with Palm, I have selected to be notified if there is a reply to this message as I prefer not to leave my personal contact information in this open forum. I am looking forward to hearing from you [Palm] to see what can be done to address my concerns.
    Sincerely,
    Chad B.

    Ridius,
Success! Wow, what an endeavor! I had already tried using the HotSync troubleshooting before I turned to the forums so as I expected, I was unable to find a resolution there. Here's what I did next:
    • Before using the Registry Fix utility, I exported all of my "good" files (memos, contacts, calendar, tasks) from my TX. I then wiped everything from the Treo 755p through another hard reset.
    • Downloaded the Registry Fix utility, erased all existing profiles on my computer, re-downloaded the Palm Desktop Manager v6.2.2 and installed it over all existing Palm software on the computer
    • Performed an initial HotSync and then tested each feature (contacts, memos, calendar, tasks) one at a time with a HotSync in between each one. Success!
    • I then went through and instead of loading the profile from my TX, I obtained the most up to date software versions of the most often used additional programs and loaded each one, one by one & performing a successful HotSync each time before moving on to the next.:
    o MegaLauncher v6.44
o Agendus for Palm OS Standard Edition v12.04
    o Documents To Go v8.002
    o CacheMate v4.1.2
o A new-to-me program called Passwords Plus v1.006 since my old "Secret" program was obsolete and I could not find an updated version.
o MiniTones 0.1b (for Palm OS)- just found this a few days ago and it is the greatest for using MP3's on your SD card for ringers, plus its free!
o I was unable to find an updated version of Big Clock and I refrained from loading the previous versions after reading that it has been known to cause crashes on newer Palm OS. (darn! The price was right; free, and it was an excellent program too!)
So far I have been able to perform successful HotSync’s every time with only one consistent error each time (even before the additional programs were loaded):
"Backed up some files successfully to Treo 755p's Backup folder
    •Duration: 7.6 seconds
    •Failed to backup 1 file(s)
    •PmTraceDatabase
•Protocol Error: Handheld file could not be opened. (4004)
    •SYNCERR_FILE_NOT_OPEN"
    Any ideas here?
I have not yet attempted to do anything with my work computer yet, it will take a while to get the IT department to update Palm Desktop Manager to v6.2.2 on the company servers and I feel this was one of many critical updates leading to the fix that ultimately resolved my problem.
All in all, this experience & working with you has renewed much of my faith in Palm – I am only hoping that I can find similar success with the one issue that started all of this (i.e. upgrade to a all-in-one device, time/financial investment, 2+ weeks of troubleshooting & wasted effort, etc.); the need to keep my personal calendar/contact info OUT of my company email/files, while at the same time having the ability to use the Exchange ActiveSync program to view my work email only. Most likely this will require a lot more finger crossing and outcry from the public. For the sake of myself, the many other users of the Palm Treo 755p within my company of 60,000 and those going through the same issue all over the world, I hope that the wait is not too long.
Most of all, I want to thank you for your assistance, kindness, and dedication to providing exceptional service to me and the thousands of others that you have helped directly & indirectly through this and other threads. Whether or not you are able to help me with resolving the last HotSync issue listed above or not, you have been nothing short of amazing and will have my continued vote of confidence in your abilities. I can only hope that those current leaders within the Palm organization will take the time to review this and so many other threads that you have participated in to see what a quality employee you are, so that your talents can be put to use in leading others to follow in your footsteps.
    Sincerely,
    Chad B.

  • IPhone 3G replaced Treo 755p

I have been watching this forum ever since the iPhone 3G became available. I just wanted to post my story on why I chose the iPhone 3G.
I am in IT, a Database Administrator and Designer. I bought my first smartphone, a Treo 700p in 2004, in the quest for mobility, tethering, better e-mail accessibility and the internet in my hand. The main goal was to find a way cut the shackles to my desk and to carry less crap throughout the day. My computer bag is upwards of 35 lbs.
After having the Treo 700p, then upgrading to a 755p, I have been quite happy with Treos to this point. Unfortunately the Palms are being discontinued, putting me in the market for a new smartphone of sorts.
I checked out the original iPhone a year ago and loved how user friendly it was, but is still lacked a few things I needed. When I saw the next generation 3G offering a few of the capabilities my Treo had I was very interested.
Knowing the iPhone 3G was not a true smartphone, but its pretty darn close to one. I ordered my 3G a week after the initial wave started and was put on a Customer Fulfillment waiting list. I then learned so many people were having issues with the iPhone 3G, I cancelled my order and decided to wait. I saw some of the issues people were complaining about in the display units. Once the 2.0.1 update was released, I noticed the performance was a little better.
Last Friday, the 2.1 release was out and I heard it took care of many of the issues people were having. The display units in the store were performing better also. Still annoyed I couldn't tether the 3G to my laptop directly of via bluetooth, the strong internet capabilities were enough to offset how often I needed to tether.
Its been 6 days, and I have put it through the ringer and have been very surprised with how well its performed. Getting it home I had to do a hard reboot, then do a full restore which loaded the new 2.1 software. In order to maximize my battery life, train the battery and the power management software, I made sure I ran the battery all the way down right out of the box. I then let it charge overnight and day 2 i ran it all the way down again, charged it overnight again. Battery life sucked for the first day, but got better each day of the week. I met a guy that also had a 3G who gave me a few tips to save battery life.
First he suggested turning Wi-Fi off if its not needed, Second turn off the GPS locator, and third turn off push and set fetch for 1 hour.
Well, I left 3G on (I'm paying for 3G and I'm going to use it), turned off Wi-Fi and use it only when I surf the net in a Wi-Fi hot spot, turned off the GPS Locator, this is a feature I will least likely use, and I left Push "on" on 2 e-mail accounts, because its necessary. In this configuration, I now get a full days use out of it with moderate talk time without any problem. I charge it in the morning, then when I go to bed. If there are days where I will be on it more, I will charge it at my desk or in the car, which is no more than I used to do with the Treos.
Now in comparing where I get a signal to the Treo is interesting. The Treo rarely let me down and usually had a signal when no one else had one. Everywhere so far, I have been able to get a signal in the same areas as I did on the Treo. I buddy of mine who lives out in the wooooods and normally can't call out on any cell phone, he was able to reach me from the deep woods Sunday on his new 3G.
I use my 3G to access my web based database applications, which was my original intent on getting the 3G. I can now update , query and edit information in my database, standing in a mechanical room directly from the iPhone. I can then send a report or an email if necessary, then get a response as I'm walking back to my office. Its just super slick. I'm also designing some SDK applications to run my stuff on the iPhone.
With the 2.1 update, exchange and e-mail push, multiple calendar management, contact list sorting, smooth backup with Mobile Me, exceptional web capabilities and the best user interface out, it outshines my Treo 755p. Mariner Software is coming out with something that will allow reading, creation and editing of Excel and Word documents. That will be the last of what I will need to make it a true hand held computer. The Treo did allow me to read and edit, but I couldn't create.
In summary, I am happy with the new iPhone 3G and it is making my work day a heck of a lot more efficient. It does 95% of what I need it to do. The iPhone 3G frees me up from carrying my laptop all day.
I would gladly give up some slimness for a bigger battery. Sorry Apple, the Treo's camera took much better pictures. The 3G camera should be much better for a multimedia device of this caliber.
In my opinion, battery life is not as bad as an equally used smartphone. The iPhone does a lot, as with any smartphone you have to manage what you are using vs. what you really need at times to maximize battery life. Although the 3G is not a smartphone, it's more of a Mac Ultralight than it is a simple phone or plain iPod. BTW the keyboard does get easier to use over time.
    Sincerely,

The retail sales price for a new iPhone 3G has not changed (and the first generation iPhone is no longer sold by Apple), so an exchange under warranty has no affect on the original retail sales price for the iPhone, or the perceived or real value when selling an iPhone used to someone else - the price someone else is willing to pay for a used iPhone.

As stated in a previous post above, you will need to change Palm Desktop's sync settings to Microsoft Outlook.
The Treo Pro uses Microsoft Windows Mobile as its operating system, and is designed to sync with Outlook, and not Palm Desktop.
If you don't have a copy of Outlook on your computer, then it will have to be purchased.
There is a "switch" in Palm Desktop that will tell your old phone to start syncing with Outlook.  Start Button/All Programs/Palm/PIM Conduit Sync/Sync with Outlook.  Once you've activated this switch, all your data will migrate to Outlook, and the Pro will automagically find it there when you do your first ActiveSync.

To fix this what we need to do is hard reset your device. The instructions to do that is here http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=887 this tells you how to do all types of resets. Also, what we need to do is rename your backup folder. What this folder is, it hold all your programs from the last time you synced your PC. On your computer go here My Computer--> C drive --> Program files --> Palm/PalmOne--> your hotsync user name --> and right click on your backup folder and rename it to "backup.old" Resync your device to the same user name and you will get all your contacts, calendar, tasks, and memos.
You can install the programs again but make sure they are compatible with the device. Also try one program again and wait 24 hours to see if the same thing happens again. This way you know what program is causing the issue.
