Vista/iTunes reports iPod corrupt (and Restore does not correct it)

I have a 16GB nano, a Dell laptop running Windows Vista Business Edition, and a home-built PC running Windows XP SP3. On the XP desktop machine, both Windows and iTunes work perfectly fine with the iPod. All is great.
On the Vista laptop, it's a no-go. Windows says there's a disk there, but only offers to format it (as if it's a new, unformatted disk; and if I let it, it reports a failure to format successfully). iTunes reports that it's corrupt and offers to restore it, but after restore process completes, it once again reports the problem and offers to restore it again. Interestingly, this iPod came formatted for Mac, and the restore process did/does successfully convert it to PC format. Only afterward, we're back to the usual error message.
I'm not sure if the issue is the laptop (and some funky USB hardware port thing), or if it's Vista (and some funky Vista software thing). Or, is it possible there's really something wrong with my iPod and XP overlooks it?
I've performed the 5 R's, and tried a lot of uninstall/reinstall/update the install with USB devices and drivers, with no change. I'm not really certain how to proceed. My gut tells me the iPod's ok; but I'd like to be sure.
I'd mostly like to verify that: (a) my iPod is really fine - and either - (b) the laptop has a hardware issue - or - (c) Vista has a software issue. If I solve the laptop/Vista issue, that would be icing on the cake (I'm content to use the XP machine for iTunes), but it's not critical as long as I can feel confident the iPod's okay after all.
Let me know if there's anything else I can tell you, or if you have any suggestions.
Thank you!
James

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

If necessary, post the results from the HD test and we'll figure out where to go from there.

What happens when you try to restore the device to factory settings?  Any error messages?  If so, what is the exact wording of the error message(s)?

  • HT1459 I have a ipod touch and the kids locked it, ipod is disabled, connect to iTunes".  I do and it does not recognize the device.  Now what?

I have a itouch and it ended up getting locked.  I ave tried to connect to iTunes and it does not recognize it.  Tried the 2 help options and they did not work either (turn off and hold power button, connect to itunes).
No sure if it makes a difference but i have a iphone 4s, iphone 3 and a itouch.  I do not use itunes much so I am out in the dark.  Also Apple says to bring it in for service.
    Thx

Do as the manual says to do and restore the ipod.  If you are unable, then type "unable to restore" into the search bar at the top of this page by Support and read the resulting help articles.

  • Ipod Touch - recovery and restore does not delete unknown Restrictions Code

Hi, I'm sure this has been answered hundreds of times already.
Having put into recovery and restored on numerous occasions, I find that ipod is still in '10 failed attempts' on wanting to enter passcode (whether it's Restrictions or Reset).  All info i find says to recover/restore etc. and this will return to factory settings, but it isn't.
How can I get rid of this locked passcode please?

Normally you should be able to put in a new passcode during this process:
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.

  • Loss of sound (Hard-reset and restore does not work)

    Hi,
I loss all sounds on my iPad 2 (currently on iOS 7.04). This is the 2nd time I have had this issue (had it with an earlier iPad) and had to replace the previous one (out of warranty period).  Very frustrating as it is about the same time period after purchase.  Last time, it seemed like a repeated fault with the iPad and I cannot believe I have the same issue again on a different product.  It is an expensive way of having to re-buy every couple of years for no other reason.
It did not happen immediately after an update i.e. it does not appear to be "update" or iOS version-related.
Anyone got any advice please?  The facts are as follows (and what I have tried).
    When it happened?
I was in iMovie editing a movie when all sound went from the speaker.  It continued to work with earphones plugged in, but this is now intermittent.  I have no sound on the speaker at all except for when I click sounds on the menu and change the level of ringer alert (which works on the speakers).  This seems to tell me that it is a software problem.  I have no sound on any applications or internet video or music from iTunes.  I cannot survive on the earphones as they only work for a period of time and then they fail (until I take the jack out again when it works again for a period of time before the headphones fail again).
    What have I tried?
    a) Numerous hard resets
    b) changing the side switch's position
    c) changing in general settings the side switch settings from lock rotation to mute and back again (repeatedly and in reverse to see if it makes any difference)
    d) resetting all settings - this made no difference
    e) erase all content and settings - interestingly at the stage when it asked me if I wanted to restore from an iCloud account, it was making sounds (the keyboard clicks - which don't make a sound irrespective of the click setting currently) i.e. appeared to have resolved the issue and as soon as I restored my iCloud back-up, the sound went again.
I would be grateful for any suggestions.  This post also includes a recommendation to Apple on improving its product (relating to iCloud backups) as the ultimate solution should not be paying for a replacement for a software issue (to avoid losing all my data permanently).
    My musings are that:
    a) it is definitively a software issue (on account that the speakers work in certain situations only)
    b) it appears to be that the software is corrupted in my iCloud back up
    c) it is an issue that happens regularly and is an avoidable issue/cost to Apple's customers that needs to receive higher priority in being addressed as it is built in redundancy for a significant proportion of customers.  At the very least, iCloud backups should be capable of being restored in part - is there any way this could be done so we don't lose all of our notes, media etc if the final advice is to "start again".  How can it be right to lose all content because of an Apple system software issue?  I am pre-guessing this will be the final advice (if I don't want to pay for a replacement iPad)?
Please help me and all those others with the same avoidable software problem.
    Thank you,
    Peter

This is an iPad user to user forum, so you are not addressing Apple.
Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

  • Hi, I have purchased an audio book on iTunes from an iMac and it does not show up on the cloud so I can't download it on my iPhone. Does anyone know why and how I can proceed to transfer the audio book purchase?

    Hi
I have purchased an audio book from iTunes with my iMac.
Now I wanted to listen to it on my iPhone so I proceeded to transfer the purchase and looked for the book in the purchased section of the store in the iTunes on my iPhone but it did not show up.
Does anyone know why and how I can transfer the audio book purchased on my iPhone so I can listen while away from the desk?
    Thank you,
    Sanya

Can you find the audio book by using the Search feature on the iPod?
Do you have the right boxes checked to sync the audio book to the iPod?
iTunes: Syncing media content to iOS devices and iPod
Note you have to check the boxes in Books pane for the iPod in iTunes to sync books in general and another box to sync Audio Books.

  • DFU and Restore does not work

Firstly, I would like to point out that I am using the latest version of iTunes.
My girlfriend gave me her phone to fix. She has tried to install iOS 7 which does not appear to have worked and she did not make a backup.
When the phone is switched on, the 'Swipe to Setup' message appears. You select a language etc and then are greeted by a message advising to connect the phone to iTunes. When you do this, iTunes basically advises that there is an issue.
I sucessfully started DFU mode and iTunes then recognised that there was a phone in recovery mode and shows the restore button.
After clicking the initial resore button, I am then offered the 'Update and Restore option which I selected.
iTunes then shows the phone being restored:
    Restoring iPhone software...
    Verifying iPhone Software...
    Verifying iPhone Restore...
    Restoring iPhone Firmware...
It then tells me it is complete and to leave the phone connected which I do. After a few minutes, iTunes detects the phone and tells me once again that there is an issue. The phone itself, as before; shows the 'Connect to iTunes' message after going through the initial setup of language etc.
Can anyone offer any advice as to what is going wrong with this?
I have tried this procedure no fewer than seven times and it is becoming quite frustrating.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Go elsewhere. JB voids the Apple warranty and means you will get no support from Apple, including from this Apple forum.

  • Most of my bookmarks disappeared and restore does not bring them back. How do I get my bookmarks back and how do I keep this from happening again?

The folder that I added to the bookmarks menu has disappeared (along with the subfolders in it). The bookmarks I have that were not organized in a folder (just listed on the bookmarks menu) are still on the bookmarks menu. Tags from the lost bookmarks are still there, but they are empty.
The "recently bookmarked" option just lists the bookmarks I had added to the bookmark menu (but not put in folders) and the default bookmarks from Mozilla and Windows Live. There were many things in the lost bookmarks that were more recent than these.
I tried restoring from an automatic backup and that didn't work. My browser history seems accurate though.
I only have one firefox profile.

I don't think it is the corrupt localstore.rdf file since none of the problems listed in that article are happening. The disappeared folder and bookmarks do not appear in the sidebar or in the menu.
I can still add bookmarks and the back/forward navigation still works. I do not want to do anything that will delete my history.
I downloaded the places.sqlite extension suggested and tried "Rebuild Indices." That did not bring my missing bookmarks back.
I had it do the "Deep Check" preset and this is what it told me

I purchased a game from itunes for my iphone and the game downloaded but does not work

Ok? Why do you mean it doesn't work?

  • Iphone update not successful and restore does not work

I tried to install the latest iphone update and received a message that it was unsuccessful and I had to restore my iphone. Now, restore is unsuccessful. My phone displays an image of a cable disconnected from itunes and CD. What next? I'm dead in the water.

I had the same "unknown error 2001" every time I tried to restore the iPhone. It would detect the unit immediately in "recovery mode" but fail to restore with that error.
    Then I tried this:
"+Before the iPhone is detected, but whilst connected to the computer, press on the home button and keep it pressed down until a message appears to say that a phone has been detected in recovery mode, then follow the steps indicated. It may take about 30 seconds, so don't let go."+
As suggested above (thanks, you are a savior) and it worked. I also charged the unit from the AC (not usb) for a while and restarted the PC before trying the above mentioned method. Also, I connected directly to the USB port with the cable, avoiding the "hub" thingy that comes with the phone.
    Thanks! and hope that helps...
