Vista not showing up in startup disc pref?

I have Vista 64bit Business installed, via a bootcamp partition on a second internal drive on my 8 Core Mac Pro, which is running 10.6.2. Occasionlly I will use VMware fusion running off my bootcamp partition, but yesterday when I tried this, vmware said that it couldn't find the specified files. I could see the hard drive on my destop but when I went into the prefs > startup disk I did not see Windows OS? Normally it is there. If I restart my computer and hold down the option key I can then select the Windows partition. I am assuming that my issues with vmware are related to the windows partition not showing up in my startup disk prefs. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks,
Steve

Obviously you are not using a PowerPC G5.... and you didn't add an NTFS driver like that in Paragon or MacFUSE etc to write to NTFS drives.
Normally, for me, Windows is not shown... I make changes in Windows. And you didn't move the drive or partition at all.
I'd boot from Windows DVD and do system repair, also next time in Vista (natively) have it do a full check disk.

I have sucessfully partitioned my macbook pro (thanks Ds Store!) and now I have another problem, When booting up I hold down option to choose my startup disc all that shows up is macintosh HD and recovery, BOOTCAMP is not showing up, even though it showes up in devices please help me!!

Did you actually Install a version of Windows into that Boot Camp Partition? It doesn't sound like you did.
You'll need a copy of Windows 7 or 8, 64bit, and a valid license key code for whatever version you plan on installing.

I lost my iphone and my macbook pro does not show the icloud in system pref. how do i get icloud on my mac?

iCloud is only available in Lion, 10.7. You will have to upgrade to Lion in order to get into iCloud. If you transfered a .mac or .me address to iCloud through mobile me, or you have another device iCloud enabled, then you can log into the iCloud.com website.

I installed the latest version of mavericks and now windows does not show up on startup, but the partition is still there with no name. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

  • Windows not showing up in Startup Disk

Just updated a 15" Retina to 10.8.3 and also ran the SMC 1.1 update. Now my bootcamp windows partition does not show up in the Startup Disk any more. I can see it in the Finder and I can reboot and hold down option key to boot into Windows, but for some reason it isn't showing up in Startup Disk Preference.

yeah, I had a feeling it might be Tuxera causing it, wanted to see if there was another solution other than uninstalling it.
I tried disabling it in the pref pane and that didn't fix the issue, so I'm assuming it would need to be uninstalled.
As long as I am able to boot into Windows when needed (which isn't very often), I'm not too concerned.  Its a little inconvenient to have to hold Option during startup to do it, but it works.
Whats annoying too is that when using BootCamp control panel in Windows to restart into OSX, it boots into the emergency partition for Lion instead of Lion.  So, guess holding Option at startup is the only option both ways!
    Thanks for the help.

  • Mac Mini - Disc Warrior - Will not respond to new startup Disc

    Problem:
I ran disc warrior and rebuilt and replaced the directory simply as maint and to deal with a few crash issues. After quitting Disc Warrior I held the option key (on a new low profile Apple Keyboard - wired) to open startup disc assistant. Computer continues to boot from the disc. I cannot find a single way to change the startup disc from within Disc Warrior either.
I then determined that there is no power going to the keyboard until after the time period needed when holding the option key or even trying to use the firmware keyboard shortcut. I determined this by pressing the caps lock key. The green light on the caps lock does not come on until well after the initial startup sound.
Is there a way to open terminal when the computer is booted from a disc? Is there a way around this? I've tried unplugging every peripheral except the keyboard and the power issue still persists.
No matter what I do, the computer still boots from the disc. I tried opening system prefs from the apple menu but it is grayed out.
Any help would be great. Thanks

Unfortunately, this seems to be an issue with the new aluminum keyboards: they do not seem to allow you to access the Startup Manager. Do you have a wired mouse? If so, you could plug it directly to the Mini (just to be safe), start the Mini, press and hold the mouse button right after the startup chime until the CD ejects. The Mini should then boot to Mac OS X.
If you have an Intel Mini, it may be even easier: pressing and holding your Apple Remote's "menu" button right after the startup chime should have the same effect as using the Option key on a keyboard.

  • Bootcamp partition fully bootable within VMWare, but not showing up in startup with option key - nor does it work when selecting target startup disk

    Hey all,
Today I resized my OSX partition with the intention of leaving it blank for my new SSD to use as over provisioning space. This resulted in me having 5 partitions on the drive for a short while (which may have caused the issue?). Hereafter, the Windows 8 partition was stopped showing up when pressing option on startup. I opened my bootcamp partition in VMWare Fusion and could was told the drive was unbootable. I used the Windows 8 cd in through VMWare Fusion to run the Auto Repair from the installation CD (probably MBR records and BCD records etc). Then VMWare was able to fully boot my Windows 8 installation without any problem. However, I am still not able to actually boot into my Windows 8 installation as it doesn't show up at startup, and when chosen as target start disk within OSX the computer just hangs on startup before it reboots.
I am considering the possibility of some mis-sync between the GPT tables OSX is using and the MBR records used by Windows 8... I have run a few commands and gotten the following response:

I am have hit a wall in regards to this issue. Why can I boot from my bootcamp partition using VMWare, but not directly from it like when I restart my computer?

Okay solution found found a solution finally... i followed the steps outlined in this article: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4144252?start=0&tstart=0 . After i did this my windows bootcamp partition showed up again, but my osx and osx recovery disks became unbootable. Luckily I have an extra enternal harddrive with osx installed on, so ran disk utility and repaired the affected disk where osx had become unavailable. Then rebooted and all disks now shows up and work perfectly again.

  • External Hard drive will not show up on startup

    Hello,
When i leave my external hard drive (that I use to back up my system) in, it will not show up on the desktop. Is there any solutions i could try?
    Thanks for your help
    Brad

Ok, so you can see it, at least with Disk Utility.
OS X journeled is fine, but If you ever expect to use it to boot off of, you'll need to create a primary partition map set to GUID...do that as a first step, then confirm it is OS X format, name it, etc.
Once that is done, it should mount on the desktop - you can expect a message asking if you want to use it as a TM backup drive. You might need to restart to help keep everything updated.

  • Disk Not Showing Up in Startup Disk

I have a mid-2011 MacBook Pro with two partitions on the internal hard drive. One has 10.8.5. One has 10.6.8.
When I boot from the 10.6.8 Snow Leopard disk the partition with 10.8.5 no longer shows up as a bootable volume in System Preferences>Startup Disk. It just disappeared. I can reboot and hold down the option key and then I can choose either partition and boot into it.
But does anyone know how I can get Startup Disk to recognize the 10.8.5 partition again? Any suggestions?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Are you using FileVault on your 10.8.5 partition?

  • Windows Boot Camp partition not showing up on Startup Disk in Snow Leopard

    Dear Fellow Mac Heads,
I have Windows 7 RTM installed as Boot Camp in one partition and Snow Leopard 10.6.1 installed in another. In Windows, the Boot Camp icon shows everything (i.e. Network, Windows 7, and Mac OSX Snow Leopard) so I can switch back and forth as I please. But in Mac OS, the Startup Disk menu under Systems Preferences only shows the Mac partition and Network. Windows 7 is nowhere to be found. I can't even do the OPTION on keyboard boot to get into Windows. I have to shutdown the machine, restart while holding onto OPTION key before all partitions show up. What's wrong with this picture? Is this happening to anyone else? Thanks in advance.

Maybe you are using something like NTFS-3G?
Maybe this thread has something for you...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2146363&tstart=30
Oh, sorry I just noticed that you have read or posted in that thread, but didn't like the answer?
You get strange results with many 3rd party products. I don't use Bootcamp at all. Parallels 4 works very well with Snow Leopard and none of this booting back and forth hassle. Windows is just for research, use the Mac side for performance.

  • Firewire Firelight not showing up as bootable disc on Macbook Pro

I have a Firelite FWFL40P firewire external harddrive that has system 10.4.8 installed on it. IF i hook it up to my iMac G5 , It shows up and boots as a bootable Disk (system preferences->Start-up Disk), but when I attach it to my MacBook pro Dual, it won't show up. I think it used to with older OS.
    THougths?
    roger

It is because a MB only boots from a GUID Partititon Table and The G5 only boots from and Apple Partition Scheme. If you wish to use this on both machines for doc storage/transfer your best bet is the Apple Partition. If you need a bootable exteranal GUID is the only choice for the MBP. One disk cannot boot both machines. Two partitions will not work as the partition scheme is the culprit here.
Disk Utility>50 GB??(disk not volme)>Partition>Options> Here you select the partition scheme. GUID will boot MacBook only Apple will boot G5 only'

  • Why do I have to keep choosing the toolbars to show and not show on FF startup???

when I start FF I have to keep right clicking and choosing (or unchoosing) toolbars to show for the session. How do I make the startup configuration permanent?

That can be a problem with the localstore.rdf file.
    See:
Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?
Some have virtualization features that can cause problems by protecting and restoring files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • Utility Option Not Showing Up on Install Disc

I am still new to my Macs and I am trying to do an erase and install to solve a Panic Kernel issue (got lots of help in forum posts and a final cal to Apple support lead me to this).
I have backed up in Time Machine. Put in the install disc, click on utilities, the it says to restart which I do.
It restarts and I get the language screen. Then the INstall Mac OSX screen.
Next option is continue, but then it goes right into the install. I need utilities to erase the disc. (I am only assuming I need to do it from the disc since the drive I want to erase has disc utility on it.
    Am I missing a step?
