Vista: Only WIFI works, not (wired) Ethernet

I've installed Vista Ultimate under Boot Camp where all works fine except:
1) While my wireless network is available and connectable to the internet, Vista nowhere offers me even the possibility to connect via (wired) Ethernet. (I installed XP under VMware Fusion and I have no problem). Yes, I've checked all my connections & they're fine.
2) Even logged on wireless, I can't see any other Mac on my local network. However I CAN see (and connect to) Vista on my iMac from any of the other Macs on the network. I think all my sharing prefs, firewall et al settings are OK by I'm stumped! Ideas????

Is your ethernet card even listed in the hardware listings? Did you update the drivers (for Vista) by first booting into Vista, then inserting the Leopard DVD? The DVD should fire up on it's own to install those.

  • Can connect via wifi but not by ethernet cable?

    Hi,
    I'm a bit confused here.
I have an airport express which works fine and I just bought an airport extreme.
The airport extreme is connected to the modem by an ethernet cable and the airport express is connected by ethernet cable to the airport extreme.
I am able to connect to the airport express wifi with all the computers but I'm unable to connect any computers to the airport extreme via ethernet cable.
Both airport express and extreme are lit up green and they both appear on the Airport Utility.
The airport extreme setting is set so that it is joining the airport express' network. That's the only way the light shows up green instead of flicking amber.
I've looked at the settings over and over again and am not sure/don't understand why this is? All I know is that I've got the wifi working! The ethernet connection is not workin for both PCs and Mac.
    Any help is much appreciated!

The airport extreme is connected to the modem by an ethernet cable
    On the WAN plug, right?
and the airport express is connected by ethernet cable to the airport extreme.
Why? You don't need AirPort Express anymore, unless you have signal weakness in your home.
If that is the case, you can use the AirPort Express to extend the range of the new AirPort Extreme WiFi network with WDS (Wireless Distribution System).

  • I'm able to connect via wifi but not via ethernet

I have a iMac, Mac OS X v10.7.5, and recently had a problem connecting to internet.  I can connect via wifi, but when I try connecting via ethernet it's not working.  When I go to the preferences > network, it shows "green" / connected for ethernet but when I open up Safari or Firefox, it doesn't show a connection to the internet.

  • Only DIO working not the analog IOs in 6031E

In the 6031E mutifunction DAQ,everything was working perfectly until recently, but suddenly all analog IO channels failed with no signal in or out. This happened when I started using one of the counters for measuring RPM.Digital IOs are working well.I am using  10 channels for analog inputs for different sensor readings and 2 analog outputs for controlling two tunnel Fan RPMs.Self test of this board has been passed.
1.I  am suspecting the board has become faulty. Is it so? But Digital IOs are functioning. How can i troubleshoot a card whether  its front end features gone bad or not  since they are passing their self tests ?
2.The card becomes hot even if it runs for  nearly ten minutes. why ?
3.I suppose analog IOs,Counters and Digital IOs are independent entities in a card.Am i right?
3.I am suspecting other supporting cards also got affected like PCI 1411 Image acquisition card as it now showing " can not find any recognizable video source".Why  these things happened suddenly as i am using these cards nearly for 3 months?
Kindly let me know the reasons

    Dear Jay,
    1. Have you tried the board in a different PCI slot or a different computer? There is a great utility online called the E Series Diagnostic that tests different aspects of the board to see if it has become faulty. If the board works in a different slot and computer, but doesn't pass, you should send it in for repair.
    2. My board warms up, but doesn't get hot. The diagnostic will tell you if it is heating up because it is faulty.
    3. Analog, digital, and counters all share the same ground plane.
    4. Did you change anything with the software? What versions of the different kinds of software are you using?
Please let me know if you have any questions. Have a great day!
    Sincerely,
    Marni S.

  • Can't browse web (outbound HTTP port 80) using wired Ethernet

I just purchased a new 20" Core 2 Duo iMac today (Leopard installed) and I'm seeing a very strange problem: I can't browse the web using a wired Ethernet connection. Here are the specifics:
    - When I set up wireless ethernet w/ Airport, it works fine (outbound port 80 access is successful)
    - Going back to wired ethernet, when I pop down into a shell, I notice that outbound FTP (port 25), outbound SSH on port 15554 works fine. When I run curl (text-based web browser), it hangs. This tells me that its only port 80 that's giving me problems and nothing else. The network connection in general is fine.
    This tells me the following:
    - wireless ethernet is working fine
    - wired ethernet mostly works - all outbound TCP ports that I've tested work great. Its just the HTTP/Web port 80 that seems to be blocked.
I went into the Security area and under Firewalls, it appears that the default configuration is set up to allow just about anything out and in.
This is so bizzare - I thing as far as networking goes, the web access is the most important one, so I can't see Apple disabling this somehow. What gives??
Earlier, I had set up a few user accounts for the rest of the family and set up Parental Controls on my two kids accounts. When I started noticing the outbound web access issues, I even went as far as deleting all the accounts to try to return the system as close as possible to how i received it.
Anyone have any ideas why my outbound web access is blocked?
    Thanks,
    Ben

I am not sure what the fix is but let me give it a try here for you. (Making sure edit works with questions 1,2,3)
    1. What version of ColdFusion Builder are you running. Are you sure you are running Beta 3?
    2. Can you access these files from your explorer window?
    3. Are you using RDS to connect to these files or the file system? (should be able to do both but that might be helpful to know which is failing.)
    4. Now the final question... by browse you might have a different issue. What version of CF server are you running? This might not be the issue but again could be if you are running developer version. If not an issue let me know and will try to hook up with you via connect to do an online screen share and help you out here.

When you turrn off your data, you get NO data.
You need to turn OFF your mobile network, and leave data on. WiFi data and BIS will work then.

  • TC works on ethernet, does not on wifi, but wifi works

    Hi,
having problems with my Time Capsule. It was working fine until a few weeks ago, then after a long absence it stopped to work (I didn't see backups updated). I switched off the TC, then switched on, no change.  I tried with a ethernet cable, and backup was done smoothly. Back to wifi, I tried to remove the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file from /Library/Preferences, but backup through wifi didn't work.  Time machine got stuck at the "Preparring Backup" stage forever.
However, the wifi works. My lMacBook Air is now connected to the internet through the TC wifi, and I can enter the TC for old backups using the wifi.
The same behavior is occurring with my wife MacBook.
    Any suggestion ?
    Thanks,
    Luigi

    Your confusing me now..
To add, if I connect the wifi to the TC wifi, it works. If I connect the wifi to my adsl router, it does not. However, if I have the wifi connected to the adsl router, I can see the TC in Airport, as working fine.
But in no case does the TM backup work?? Does the TM work if you connect to the adsl router wifi instead of the TC wifi?
So you have the adsl modem as your main router. The TC should be in bridge.
I have a few tasks for you.. none of which is guaranteed to work but we should be able to fix it.
    1. Downgrade the firmware.. you can try the following steps without doing this.. but 7.6.4 is not helping.
In v6 utility in Lion you can simply select the TC, option click on version.. and all the older firmware will appear. Select 7.6.1 and downgrade.
    2. Factory reset.
The Factory Reset TC Gen1-4. Or AE Gen1-5
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec.
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    3. Redo the setup.
Use all SMB type names.. eg.. TCGen4 as TC name.. it is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Use TC24ghz for 2.4ghz wireless. Use TC5ghz for 5ghz wireless.. yes, use different names at least until you work out the issues.
Use WPA2 Personal security with a 10-20 character full alphanumeric password.
    4. Delete the current TM setup and start again.
    See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
So you will select the newly named TC but the TM should find your old backups and continue to use them.. only Mavericks it seems is too stupid to do this.
    5. See if TM now works by wireless.

  • HP Pavilion Entertainment PC: WiFi works, however, hard wired connection does not work.

Internet via WiFi works, however, hard wired connection does not work.
My software indicates my hardware is working properly.
However, if I connect another computer to the cable I am using, it connects to the internet without a problem.
And, if I connect my comupter to another cable that works with another computer, my computer still does not connect to the internet.
    HP Pavilion dv9700 Notebook PC
    32-bit Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2

It could be that the touch pad is broken on the inside and the contact area for the one button is either broken, blocked with an object or the cable going to the mother board is not inserted correctly into the mother board connector. I think in any case the case will have to come off and someone look for physical/connection problems.  It doesn't sound like a software problem but there is always a chance.

  • I cannot get GPS Only to work on my ipad3 (4g version, but not on an active cell plan, and wifi off).  Is there some new requirement in 7.1 or 7.1.1 to have cell and/or wifi enabled for GPS to work? I am testing with MotionX

It seems like I cannot get GPS only to work on my ipad3 (4g version, but not on an active cell plan, and wifi off).  Is there some new requirement in 7.1 or 7.1.1 to have cell and/or wifi enabled for GPS to work? I am testing with MotionX, garmin blueChart mobile, and a GPS monitoring tool. All show no signal. If I turn on cell and wifi,  it says I get gps signal, but can't tell if that is from the GPS chip, or just from cell and wifi only (maybe with some gps mixed in)?  Any ideas on how to get iPad working with GPS only??

Yes. tried the one ram stick, no go.  I have been trying to boot off/install the windows 7 disk but am unable to get to the point where windows starts installing after its gathering information portion of the install.  I can get to the disk selection screen of the install with the WD HD on SATA port 2 but then get the "cant install messages" when I try to select the Vertex 3.  Yes I can see the Vertex 3 Drive as well as the WD drive at this point.  some times I have to hit "scan" a couple of times.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • Wired Ethernet + Airport Express could not get them to work together

I am a newbie to Mac. My daughter has a Macbook. No wireless internet access is allowed in her dorm room. Each room has an Ethernet port with a cable so she could plug it in her Macbook and access the Internet. I bought her an AirportExpress a few weeks ago. I set the Airport Express up to connect her printer so she could print wirelessly and stream iTunes to her stereo within her room. I could do both without problem, but if I turned on the Airport on Macbook, Safari could no longer access the Internet. If I turned off the Airport, then the Internet works fine. The school does not allow connecting the Airport Express to the Ethernet Lan port in her room (for security reason), so I could not configure the Airport Express as others would normally do by also plugging in the Ethernet cable.
How could I get the above work by being able to steaming music via Airport and still be able to access the Internet via the wired Ethernet cable. Thanks

ssbkk, Welcome to the discussion area!
By default this is not possible. However using information from Apple's "Mac OS: Connecting to the Internet and sharing files locally at the same time" it might be possible. Try these directions:
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
    Choose the Network preference pane.
Choose the Ethernet port since you use this to physically connect to the Internet.
Click the TCP/IP tab. This pane should already be set up as directed by her school.
Choose Network Port Configurations from the Show pop-up menu.
If the Ethernet port is not at the top of the list, drag it to the top.
Locate the AirPort you want to use for Printing.
If AirPort is not second in the port configurations list, drag it to the second position.
Choose AirPort from the Show pop-up menu.
    Click the TCP/IP tab.
Choose Manually from the Configure pop-up menu.
    Enter these settings:
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    IP address: 10.0.1.201.
Leave the router and other fields blank.
    Click Apply Now.

  • NFL Live Works Only w/3G Not WiFi Since Last App Upgrade

    Hello,
I've been able to successfully use the NFL app (both Live & Videos) over both 3G & WiFi from roughly August until about 2 weeks ago. I think it was after I upgraded to version 2.5.1 that I found that I can't watch Live over WiFi. To be specific:
Video over 3G & WiFi works
    Live over 3G works
Live over WiFi fails w/a "Error playing video." error
    I've got a Droid 2 w/Froyo (2.2).
To try to fix the problem, I tried the following with no success:
cleaned the data for the NFL app
uninstalled & reinstalled the NFL app
put the phone into Flight mode & then turned on WiFi (i.e. no 3G, only WiFi)
tried using WiFi from both home (Cox) & work
I've seen a couple of threads around September w/no resolution.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Neil

That soubds like a DNS problem possibly in your router or your ISP's DNS server. When your iPad is requesting that the router convert a symbolic server name to a numeric IP address it is not getting a timely response and hence the message, "server can't be found".
Check to see if there is a firmware update for your router or try a better router. Do some testing on other WiFi networks.
Note that if you use 3G or 4G a completely different network is used.
I am not having such a problem running iOS 8.3 on an iPad 4, an iPad Air 2, an iPhone 5, and an iPhone 6 Plus.

  • WiFi turning off when Ethernet connected, and not coming back on

Since about last Tuesday (possibly when I updated to Safari 7.0.6), whenever I connect my MacBook Air (2011) to ethernet, my WiFi turns off. When I disconnect the ethernet, the WiFi does not turn back on, which makes this an annoying problem. If I try to manually turn it on while Ethernet is still connected, it does the scanning animation a few times, and then turns back off. Without the ethernet, once WiFi is turned back on, it works just fine.  I'm using both the Apple USB to Ethernet adapter and a StarTech Thunderbolt hub with Gigabit ethernet, and this happens with both.  Everything is up to date, and the only change that coincided with this new behavior is Safari, but I don't remember if I updated it before of after the problem appeared, and I may not have noticed the problem for a few days as I don't often use my mac away from a wired connection.
Is this a known problem? Any known solution? When I search for it, all I find are people looking for ways to make the WiFi automatically toggle opposite the Ethernet, no one complaining that it's happening on its own.

Why are you turning cellular data off when you get home? If you have wifi at home, it will connect to the phone. Then, once you leave home and get out of range of the wifi, cellular data should connect automatically, you wouldn't need to turn it back on. Turning wifi off is really not necessary unless you are using it as a battery saving feature. I leave my wifi turned on all the time, as well as cellular data, and my battery lasts for quite a long time.
