Vista Parental Control Settings to allow use of a networked iTunes library?

I just installed iTunes on a new Vista machine, and under a user account with no parental controls, I can access my main library on my XP machine on a local area network. However, as soon as I put on Parental Controls in Vista, iTunes running on the Vista will not allow me to access my main library on my XP machine. I get an error saying that I need to modify my Firewall (Defender) to allow access to the shared (networked) library.
Does anyone know if there are some basic settings in the Vista Parental Controls that I can change that will allow access to the shared iTunes library?
Thanks,
Paul

OK, I seem to have found a solution to this issue after looking around the web.
I did some experimentation with the allowed web site listing within Vista, and found that when I put the following allowed web sites/domains into my son's listing, I can keep parental controls running and allow him to access the iTunes store.
http://phobos.apple.com
http://phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net
Actually, the second site is the one that is the one that enables the access, but the web posting that i found listed them both.
Good luck to all in providing a safe computing environment for their kids!
Sincerely,
A Concerned Parent

  • In-App Purchasing disabled. Check your parental control settings and try again

I have played games for quite a while and have used the purchased many "lives" for games, etc. For about a week now, whenever I go to purchase some like this, I receive the following error message: "In-App purchasing disabled. Check your parental control settings and try again later."
I have read the threads about this and have done everything that was said to do. I go to settings > General > Restrictions. I ensured that "enable Restrictions" is turned off.
But I still receive the same error message. I have an ipad 2 with IOS 7.1.
ANy further ideas? Is there something in the iTunes store that needs to be checked?
I've about given up. Thanks for any help

I will try doing this, but I would like to add ... if I'm playing Candy Crush and want to buy additional lives, etc., I have no problem in purchasing them. Could it be the specific game that is not allowing me to buy anything? And I know this doesn't make much sense either, but I'm grasping at anything here because I've purchased them before.
You said to turn on in app purchases .. When I go into Settings > General, I'm ensuring that Restrictions are Disabled, correct? I can see the "in-App purchases" but I'm not able to do anything with it since my restrictions are disabled ... Is this correct? I'm a little confused here.

  • How can I restore Parental Control Settings from Time Machine Backup?

I was trying to adjust one of the parental controlled accounts for my child.  I disabled parental controls, rebooted, and re-enabled it.  Now all the settings that I had setup before are gone.  How can I restore Parental Control Settings from Time Machine Backup?

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.
BTW - I found this out by reading the 'blue box' selection on this page: http://pondini.org/TM/E2.html
    (Thanks goes to Pondini!)

  • Does home sharing allow me to share my iTunes library with other users on the same imac

Does home sharing allow me to share my iTunes library with other users on the same imac?

Apparently so (as long as each user operates out of a different Mac User account).
After setting up home sharing in the various different user accounts on the Mac, you need to have iTunes open in the account that you want to Home Share from.
Now use fast User Switching to get into the account that you want to Home Share to. Launch iTunes in there. The library in the other account should appear as shared for you.

  • Updated iPhoto could no longer use the music from iTunes library for slideshow

Anybody checked if you can still use your music from iTunes library for slideshows?
After updating both iPhoto and iTunes to the latest version in Mavericks, all music links in the iPhoto's slideshows became invalid. Tried even to re-establish the music links, but it seems like the iPhoto would not play any music from the iTunes library. Only the sample music from iPhoto is usable. The iTunes works fine by the way.
    Thanks a lot!

I think I found a workaround that seemed to correct the problem. In iTunes, go to the File menu and choose Library. Then select Organize Library. Next choose Reorganize files in the folder "iTunes Media".  Click OK.

  • ITunes can't access shared library when Vista parental controls are on

I started a thread back on March 1 2008, but it got archived before it could be answered, see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1420673&tstart=0
I'm using 64 bit Vista with iTunes version of 8.0.2.20, but I don't believe this issue has anything to do with the 64 bit versus 32 bit iTunes versions.
    The exact message is:
"The shared library "libraryname" is not responding. (-39)
Check that any firewall software running on either the shared computer or this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."
But if I turn off Parental Controls, the shared library is accessible, it all works fine. This has nothing to do with the iTunes store (and potential web site blocking), I just want to allow shared library access while leaving parental controls on.
    Any ideas?

This question has been around for almost two years now with no answer...very frustrating and disappointing that no one from Apple can step in and assist. I have set up the port number on my firewalls, both Windows and McAfee, as per the iTunes message and it still does not work...so I am now at a loss.
Turn off parental conrols and it all works perfectly...turn it on and library is visible but not accessible...PLEASE can someone help with this!!!
    Thanks.

  • Retrieving Parental Control Settings from Time Machine Backup

After having 20+ websites saved for "Allow access to only these websites" in Parental Controls I was experimenting and clicked on "unrestricted access" which caused all the websites we had saved to disappear when I decided to go back to "Allow access to only these websites." Is there anyway using Time Machine to recover the sites we had chosen? Any recommendations on ways to back-up the sites, so if I have another problem I can fix it easier?
    Thanks!

You won't be able to see them in the nice display of the current settings as when selecting +Mail > Preferences+ from the Mail Menubar.
And, neither the data (emails) or preferences are stored in the application.
The preferences and settings are stored in this file:
    *<your home folder>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist*
If you can read XML, find that file in your backups via +Finder > Time Machine,+ then double-click it to open it with QuickLook.

  • Windows Vista Parental Controls Preventing Connection to iTunes Store?

I really have two questions, one of which I think I have resolved but would like to find a more elegant way of handling. Let's tackle that first, after I provide some background.
I have been "managing" the contents of my son's iPod using my computer. Now that he has his own computer it should be up to him. I have two users established on his computer, with me as administrator. I have set up parental controls and am specifiying the websites he can access. I used an external hard drive to copy all his music files to his computer, putting them in a folder under his user name.
When he tries to play music copied from CD's or purchased from iTunes using my computer, a message pops up that says "The song <song name> could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" Absent a way to locate all such songs simultaneously, I click on the yes button and scroll through the list of songs until I find the one desired. Is there a better way, or are he and I going to have do repeat this hundreds of times? I think this needs to be resolved before he tries to sync his iPod with his computer. Correct?
The second problem crops up when he tries to purchase songs from iTunes. The error message reads "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occured (-9808). There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later." Apple.com is one of the sites he is allowed to visit, and there is no mention of parental controls or filtering (normally when that happens I am allowed to override with my password). Also, the computer has been authorized. Has anyone experienced anything like this or know what the workaround is? Does it have to do with parental controls, or is it something else?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I have a few things to offer that may make things a bit easier. You mention the library or music content is on an External HD and you copied it to his PC. Is the Hard Data aka the songs themselves still on the computer in a folder?
If so. Delete the songs in iTunes, Select 1 song, then Edit Select All, and Delete from Library. Now go to iTunes - Edit - Preferences- Advanced Tab
-Put a check mark in Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized, Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to the library. Thus whenever songs get added into iTunes a hard copy will be copied into the iTunes music directory stored in
Music - iTunes - iTunes Music.
-Now exit out of Preferences, Go to File - Add Folder to Library - (assuming all the songs from the HD are in 1 massive folder) and browse for this folder. iTunes will scan it, add it into iTunes, and then copy a hard digital copy into the Music-iTunes-iTunes Music folder. You can go confirm the files are there by visiting the folder. The file size of the iTunes folder should grow as you add more and more music.
Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Copy parental control settings has no effect

My daughter's controlled account semed to be completely corrupt. Most icons were question marks, nothing worked as it should etc. So I have deleted it (there was no data to speak of ... she is only young).
When creating a new acount, I want to copy her Twin brother's settings exacty .... but I do not seem to be able to do so.
Within parental controls, using the cog icon, I can copy from Ben and can paste to Rebekah ... biut this has no actual effect on the settings ... I still have to go through a list of applications, timings etc. and try to set them the same!!!
What settings are copied usong the cog menu?
How do I copy the other settings?
    Thanks.

  • Parental controls for wireless internet use?

    Hello,
This is my first post here. I've had an iPod mini for a while, and I just bought my son an ipod touch for Christmas. We have wireless internet in our home, and now I am concerned that he can browse anything, anytime! Is there a way to set parental controls to restrict what he views on the internet via his itouch? Thank you!

As a parent of 3 boys I can say that parental controls is no small issue.
A relatively simple thing you can do is set up an account (free) with OpenDNS.
See: http://opendns.com/ Once the account is set up you can specify what content should be block and what should not be blocked.
Then set the DNS servers on your iPod Touch to the OpenDNS servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220). See: http://andrewescobar.com/archive/2007/07/06/change-iphones-wi-fi-dns-settings-to -connect-to-the-internet/
Alternatively, you can set up your home router to use the OpenDNS servers and protect every computer in your home.
Note: neither of this solutions protect your son when he uses an open network OUTSIDE of your home for internet access.
    Hope this helps,
    David I.

  • HELP... Unable to alter any parental control settings- I get an error message immediately and the lock goes back on.

Is there a fix to the parental control problem – in Mountain lion? I've been unable to change any control settings for months...should have kept the family PC...this IMAC is garbage at this point.

Although one would think that re-creating the index could fix this problem, that’s not the case. What sometimes works is restarting the computer or doing some cache-cleaning — don’t ask me why, and I don’t know how to fix the problem when that doesn’t work either.
You may also want to take a look at the following thread, where another user reported the problem in his/her case was related to a difference in how the email address was written:

  • Parent Controls aren't allowing access

I am an educator with 14 computers in my mobile lab. I can't seem to get Parent Controls to allow access to just the programs I want to allow. We went from Leopard to Snow Leopard and then Lion. I have installed all available updates and now have Mac OS X 10.7.5 but when I active the controls to allow only access to the Adobe CS6 programs the students still can't access them. I have searched all over and keep finding "How to" lists but it doesn't seem that others are having this same issue. Can anyone help?

Are you leaving the Mailbox Role checked?  You need to "uncheck" the role that you want to uninstall and then click next.  The license key has nothing to do with it.
