I have success.
To use iChat, you must meet Mac OS X 10.4: iChat AV system requirements for the kind of connection you want.
For video from between a PC and your iChat:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=406147&tstart=0
Some users find this tutorial a help when trying to start video between PC and their Macs.
In my experience, Yahoo! Messenger for Mac (YMM) is not in the same league as iChat AV. iChat AV offers high-quality, real-time moving pictures and audio. YMM offers text with pictures, but you cannot get audio of any kind with YMM. That is just how the Yahoo people write the Mac version of the software. Yahoo! supports PC users better. If you must use YM, you will likely have a much better experience using a PC to run the PC version of YM.

  • Can't see buddy on video chat with PC user

I'm using a Macbook Pro and Ichat, my buddy is using a HP with a Logitech Quickcam Fusion camera and an AOL account. The problem is they can see and hear me (as well as view their own camera) but I can only hear them. The only video I see is my own.
Is there a way to switch the view from the Mac camera to the buddy camera?

    Hi thoe,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
In iChat go to the Video menu.
In here you will find the Connection Doctor.
Start a video chat with your Buddy.
    Open the Connection Doctor.
Does it say they are actually sending you any video feed ?
It is likely they need to do the "Tuning" of their camera and mic to the AIM application. If they have done it before it is likely they have disconnected the camera at some point and it will need doing again.

  • Can't Video Chat With A Particular Buddy

    Hi,
I have a question. How come one of my buddies on ichat isn't available for video chatting? When I click on this particular buddy, the option to invite to video chat goes away. I can invite OTHER buddies to video chat but not this particular buddy. Why is that? This buddy uses aim and has an aim email. Can anyone tell how I can get ichat to allow me to video chat with this buddy? Thanks.

He needs to have a version of AIM if he is on a PC that is Video capable.
Which version of AIM is he using ?
If he is using the AOL package he will have had to engage the IM part.
If AIM app he will need to have allowed it through the windows firewall as an Exception.
So if he is Using AIM Express via a web browser he may not be Video capable.
He may not have a camera set up for his AIM app.
He may be using the AOL Package and not set up the IM part (it is not On by default)
He could be a Buddy with AIM for Mac which does not do Video and has not been updated since iChat 2 (2004)

  • Can't video chat with buddy.

I have the most recent version of ichat and snow leopard, and I can't video chat with my Buddy on ichat/AIM. She has a PC (and has a camera) and whenever I try to video chat with her, it says waiting for a response, and then when she accepts it says she canceled the invitation or something else along those lines. When she tries inviting me it tells her that an error has occurred and she should restart AIM.
I tried restarting my ichat, and restarting my macbook, but it still says the same thing. She also has a PC laptop with a built in video camera, and AIM, and it lets me video chat with her on that (she doesn't like using that laptop because it's slow and the camera isn't that good), it also lets me video chat with other mac users. Please help me with this problem!!!!!! I have tried everything, but with no luck. Is it her PC or my mac? PLEASE HEELP!

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Based on what you have posted it look like her PC.
Has she allowed AIM through the Windows Firewall as an Exception ?
Has she allowed it though her Router or modem ?

  • Can i video chat with someone on a windows pc using yahoo messenger?

hi, i am considering buying a macbook laptop and would like to know before i purchase, can i video chat with someone using a windows pc with vista os on it if we are both using yahoo messenger? if so please tell me how to set that up correctly b/c the tech support site hasnt been helpful. Also, can i plug my Logitech QuickIM or ExpressIM webcam into the usb port and the macbook pick it up and allow me to use it with yahoo messenger to video chat with? can i still use the headphone earbud that came with the webcamera also if i plug it into the headphone jack on the macbook? if so how do you do that? i know that macbook has a built in webcamera, but i like to turn the camera instead of having to turn the computer all the time to show different parts of areas, etc. in my house, etc. please help me so i will know whether or not to purchase it or not. and also, can i use microsoft outlook to check my email with on a macbook, or what email program would i need to use?
email me at [email protected] with answers please.

regarding video, yes you can do a video chat with another pc user. the pc side has to right click your name and find the "view video" (using yahoo mesenger and built in cam)
have not use audio though so i can not assure you that it would work. (but most probably it would)
as to using external cam and mic, you can try to borrow someone else cam or go to a mac store and ask for a demo
as to microsoft outlook... there is no mac version of microsoft outlook as far as i know. (correct me if im wrong) how ever you can use bootcamp and have windows installed and use your mac as if your using windows

  • IChat Video chat with AIM Buddy - Possible fix?

This is my first post to the Apple Discussions group. I received my MacBook Pro, my first ever Apple computer, just two days ago, and came upon this group after discovering the problems establishing a video chat with someone using AIM. With the help of "Rjin WI" I was able to verify that I could indeed have video chat Mac-to-Mac. This morning I decided to try something I should have tried on day one-I fired up AIM 5.9 on my PC, and tried to chat with myself.
I disabled all firewalls involved: the Mac firewall, the Windows SP2 firewall, and the SPI firewall on my Linksys router. I chatted with myself between two screen name for a few moments before initialising the video chat from the Mac, but was quite shocked to see on the PC "Unable to complete the connection with your buddy. This may be due to the configuration of the firewall." On the Mac was "Failed to start Video Chat because: (I) did not respond."
I tried a few more times just to be sure, but the error message was persistent. I kept looking for some button to press or question to answer in the invitation, but there was nothing to be found. Except for the "video" button in the AIM chat I had previously overlooked. I initialised the video chat from AIM, and what do you know, I received the invitation on the Mac, accepted, and was connected just fine.
I reenabled all of the firewalls again. And once again, I was able to have a video chat with myself when I sent the invitation from the PC. Trying from the Mac instantly gave me the error on the PC, and after timing out, the same error on the Mac.
Does anyone else have anything they can add to the mystery of iChat?

    Jason-
great post. i'll try and make my situation short and sweet, as I don't have the energy to try and describe every little "error" that my computer runs into. To make it short; just got the brand new macbook (thinking 'now i can actually video chat, unlike the isight which never worked and solutions/helpful advice via appletechs seemed to be non-existent). Low and behold the camera works perfectly...2x. At the time I was using airport for wireless connection, but I have since been using the computer with a linksys. Because the computer worked with the airport and not with the linksys, I thought this was were the problem existed...then the camera worked with a different user (with the linksys) so I scratched that idea. Anyways I have been trying to video chat with another macbook and there is no success whatsoever. We both get the msg " did not respond) when the user accepts, the camera icon goes "shaded" but then goes back to its normal state. Both firewalls were disabled, and both of us are using linksys. I also run vonage in my place if that could somehow play into this scenario. I apologize for such a poor post, but my energy regarding this matter is limited since I am so tired of trying get this video chat working. (first a worthless isight, then a macbook which can't even function with another macbook. in addition, to put it lightly, i am very dissatisfied with applecare regarding this issue.)

  • Can't video chat with pc user.

I am on a Macbook with OS 10.4 installed using iChat 3.1.8. I am trying to video chat with a PC running XP and AIM 6.5 using a Logitech Quickcam Express. I can not get my computer or my father's iMac to connect with the PC. However, a friend of ours has an iMac that was purchased at the same time, and we were able to video chat between these two computers. None of the macs are using Leopard. Any suggestions?

Is there going to be some kind of resolution for this ichat / AIM stuff anytime soon. I'm on 10.5.1 with iChat 4, and just spent the last hour and a half working with a buddy on a PC trying to get vid chat working. we could get AIM to get as far as a white screen, but that's it. Cam works great in Skype, but can't get it to work at all with an AIM user. We tried it with AIM 6.5 and 5.9, but had no luck with either one.
I was hoping to not have to steer my step-mom to using Skype since it's so not user friendly, but I guess we have to go that route.

  • Can't video chat with certain buddies since downloading leopard.

Ever since I downloaded Leopard I can no longer see one of my buddies on my buddy list using iChat (AIM). I can add her, but then her name flashes in the list and disappears. I can click on her name to start a chat (if I'm fast enough), but it won't allow me to video chat with her.
I don't have this problem with any other people on my list and I can see her on my buddy list on my PC without a problem. She also has leopard on her iMac.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It seems to be caused by a combo of Circumstances.
At the point you appear to be I would go to Users/(your Account)/Library/Preferences and delete All the .plists with ichat in them.
    and the Restart iChat.

  • Can't Video Chat with other .mac user

Been trying to video chat with a buddy. We both have .mac and AIM accounts. We are able to text when logged into AIM. Attempts to video chat can't connect.
Is this a problem because we are using our AIM accounts?
I'm tried logging in with my .mac account but it always shows I'm off-line in my buddy list. Can't seem to make it go online.
    Thoughts?

    Hi BlackGuns,
    Welcome to the  Discussions
It should not matter if you use an AIM Screen Name or an @mac one.
If you have an @mac one the Password should be 16 characters or less.
When you add a Buddy the top drop down allows you to specify the account name type.
Neither requires that you add a Suffix as the @mac ones are added by iChat.
    See here http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page6.html
Most likely it is spelling or Account type error

  • I can video chat with my Dad, but he cannot share his screen

    My mac:
    Lion, 10.7.4  My iChat: 6.0.2
    My Dads mac:
Snow Leopard, 10.6.8, his iChat: 5.0.3
We are both signed in using our .mac  acounts.
I dont know what has happened, but right now we can only Video chat with each other.
I am able to invite him to see my screen, but he is unable to invite me to see his screen.
This is a major problem, becuase seeing his screen is the main way I help him get out of trouble on his computer.
I am not sure what caused this - it used to work great.
Not sure if it has something to do with the shut down of MobileMe?
Or if it occurred when I upgraded to Lion?
Is there a fix for this?
Or should I upgrade my Dad's mac to Lion?
    THANKS!

    HI,
This will work between iChat versions that support Screen Sharing.
At both ends check the Video menu and the Screen Sharing option.
This has to be On in some cases.
A sort of Half-way House setting can be achieved.
If it is Off then you tend to be able to call Out - effectively offer your Screen as calling out is not effected by this setting, nor does the Mac firewall get involved (once you have punch an outward port it tends to allow incoming responses.)
The Screen Sharing works in four scenarios:-
    You Offering your Screen
You Asking to view the Buddy's
The Buddy Offering their own screen
The Buddy asking to see your's
In your post you only list two of these.
It will pay to check the others.
It may have "happened" when upgrading to Lion and iChat 6.x.x  as some settings can get set back to Defaults on occasions for some reason.

  • IChat4 each client can video chat with test accounts but not each other

I have two machines with iChat4. Each machine can video chat with the apple test accounts but the dreaded error 8 when trying to chat with each other.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks
    Dan

    Ok,
In the Netopia turn the Firewall to Off as the settings LOw and above have some of the features I was talking about (DOS and SPI protection and Ping Blocking.)
For the TZ-180 I can only find info on the TZ -170
This site tells you how to do Port Forwarding.
The main point off linking you to it is it also tells you the default Access Info.
It is likely to be the same for this device your Buddy has.
I would not do the Port Forwarding straight away.
I would check the menu items to see if it has UPnP and that it is Enabled rather than Port Forwarding.
I would also check for the features or the wording of any firewall before resorting to setting the Port Forwarding.
I notice that the TZ-1 70 pics that site has also shows that that particular device has a VoIP setting.
IF the 180 has this we will need to know what it says and what the wording is and if the service is used.

  • Can't share screen or video chat with AIM

I'm trying to set up screen sharing and video chat with other AIM 'buddies' but the little icons for both remain greyed out when I select the buddy if the buddy is an AIM account. I also have messages configured for my GMail account. When I click on a GMAIL 'buddy' those icons switch from grey to active. So it looks like I can start a screen sharing/video chat session with GMail but not AIM folks. Any thoughts on what could be the problem? I've already deleted all iChat related preferences from my ~/Library/Preferences folder.  This system was an upgrade from Lion which had had iMessages beta on it.
    Thoughts? Thanks,
    -Noah

    Hi,
Video Chat requires that you have a enough Internet Speed.
A minimum of 128kbps upload (normally the lower) is required.
However this is the Apple declared minimum and  a real world figure of 256kbps is best.  (it is several times the fastest possible Dial up speed).
As Screen Sharing in iChat is basically an Audio Chat + then you have to be able to Video Chat (Same min speed requirement) first.
Screen Sharing also requires a random internet port that means using UPnP in your router or Modem to Open ports.
If the icons at the Bottom of the Buddy List are greyed out go to the Video Menu.
Check the Video Chat Enabled is ticked and the same for Screen Sharing.
If they are then open the Connection Doctor from the same Menu and check Capabilities.  (report these)
Having said that the Internet Speed you have and the Settings would effect both types of Buddy list.
That leaves the type of Applications the Buddy is using.
Jabber (In this case GoogleTalk ) Buddy lists will not video or Audio chat to people logged in via a Browser or the Google Talk App for PCs or other Non iChat/Messages  but Jabber able apps on PCs or Macs (it is only iChat or Messages the Buddy has to have).
An AIM Buddy could be logged in via AIM Express (Access via a Browser)
This would tend to have them Not show the Video or Audio iCons (green ones in the Buddy list) rather than "disable" the Buddy List icons.
Having laid it all out with some suggestions I am now confused.
Go to the General Section of the Messages Preferences an untick the item about gathering all Accounts into one list.
This will create at least two Buddy Lists (Jabber/Google and AIM).
The settings in the Video menu should effect both Buddy lists.
If you toggle Off and On again the Video, Audio and Screen Sharing options does anything change ?
The Messages Beta issue will not be a factor.

  • Why can I video chat with everyone on my list- Except for one person?

Recently, my friend and I have been having problems video chatting with each other. A couple of months ago, we were able to screen share, voice chat, and video chat just fine. I can, and she can too, do all those things with all of our other iChat contacts. Except when we try to do anything with each other, it says "A problem has occurred with iChat". We've tried it multiple times on different computers, internet connections, etc., but it never seems to work. Is there a way that my friend and I can start to video chat and screen share again? This problem has just come out of the blue, and it is really bugging us.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Have either of you changed a Router at all ?
I have some info dating back to iChat 3 listed here
As time and iChat has progressed so has our understanding of NAT (Network Address Translation)
In some cases the way the Device that does the routing at each end does NAT means you cannot get a video connection.
If it was working and now doesn't it suggests something changed.
As changing setting would more likely effect every Buddy at one end it looks more like a hardware issue (at least in terms of the devices functionality)
Make, model and version numbers of any routers may help identify something specific.

  • Video Chat with AIM buddy

I am trying to video chat with an AIM user. The user has the latest AIM software and I do see the video next to the name. When I click on it it just keeps ringing and eventually says that buddy did not respond. The same thing happens when the buddy calls me. I get the prompt to accept and then when I do it says that my buddy did not respond. How can I fix this?

And what you you done to set either application up ?
