VISTA PRO(PREMIUM)64 FREEZING TO PROTECT COMPUTER ,THEN WON'T SHUT DOWN

MY VISTA 64 IS FEEZING AND DUMPING TOO. THE WAY I GET IT TO RE-START IS...HOLD THE POWER BUTTON DOWN FOR 10 SECONDS. IT WILL POWER DOWN. UN-PLUG IT FOR A FEW SECONDS. PUG BACK IN. THE LIGHTS SHOULD BE OFF. IF NOT. YOU NEED TO UNPLUG AND LET REST FOR AWHILE.MAYBE 1 HOUR. IF THE LIGHT IS OUT.PUSH IT TO START UP. IF IT DON'T START.HOLD DOWN FOR TEN SECONDS AGAIN.DON'T UN-PLUG IT.PUSH TO START AGAIN. DOS START-UP SCREEN WILL COME ON.USE KEYBOARD TO SELECT SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKS.CLICK ENTER. IT SHOULD START WITH LIMITED SOFTWARE TO RUN AND TROUBLE SHOOT. I JUST DID ALL THAT TO GET HERE TO THIS FORUM. DOESN'T SOLVE MY PROBLEM. BUT AT LEAST FOR NOW I AM ABLE TO SEARCH FOR MORE SOLUTIONS. LAST WEEK I DOWNLOADED A UPDATE FOR NVDIA DRIVERS. SEAMED TO SOLVE ALL PROBLEMS FOR ABOUT A WEEK. UNTIL YESTERDAY..I LOVE THIS VISTA 64. BUT EVERYONE HAS PROBLEMS WITH IT. NOW, I SEE THERE ARE ALREADY PROBLEMS WITH WINDOWS 8.  (**bleep**). I'M THINKING ABOUT BLOWING UP THIS POS AND SWITCHING TO A MAC. MY FREINDS LOVE THEIRS.
HP BETTER GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER OR I'M DITCHING THEM LIKE SO MANY FRIENDS HAVE.
I HAVE DONE BACK-UP,SYSTEM RESTORE,NVIDA DRIVER UPDATE, SYSTEM CHECKS.VIRUS SCANS,BOOT-TIME SCANS,UN-INSTALLED UN-USED PROGRAMS,HP UPDATES,DE-FRAGGED,RAM CHECKED,MEMORY CHECKED.
DID I MISS SOMETHING? PLEASE HELP!! I'M RUNNING OUT OF OPIONS

Hello BENG2112,
You may want to consider wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the OS at this point. Then we can take it step by step from there. We can then try to isolate what is causing the system to break down.
I would say fresh reinstall then run the system for a bit to see if it freezes up.

  • Mac Pro suddenly takes very long to boot and won't shut down... just spins

My Mac started taking very long to boot up... maybe 10 minutes before the icon bar becomes available.
Also, it won't shut down... it just spins. I've waited 30 minutes with no results.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

    CBuss,
The long boot cycle points to preference corruption. And not the kind that can be corrected with re-boots etc., Check Hard Drive>Library>Preferences to see if the listings make "visual" sense. If there are a lot of letters with circles over them and numbers interspersed, you are skating out on thin ice.
Back up everything now, then do a clean install of your current OS. Do not to an "archive". That will probably archive the corruption as well. Go up to Snow Leopard if you can. Add your data back manually as well. If you keep going with these lingering start ups, you will shortly get the "?" at startup instead of the Apple/ Chime and the long, expensive, recovery (by somebody else) will begin.
As for the 'shut down" issue.. I am still in the dark. Something is still "running" and canceling the shut down cycle.
    Cheers
    Toby

  • New macbook pro freezes intermittently, need to hold power to shut down

i just got a new macbook pro in june. i have 8 GB ram, a 1 TB hard drive.
it constantly freezes and i cant do anything except shut down my computer by holding the power button
last time it happened i had just finished downloading mountain lion, i was watching a youtube video, and the mountain lion installer seemed to try to boot up. here is the panic report or whatever.
can anyone confirm whether this is fixable on my end or should i just take it in to apple?? i am assuming they will cover it since it has nothing to do with me and i just bought the computer.

  • My Macbook Pro won't shut down or restart without forcing shut down. Hangs on grey screen. iTunes not recognizing iPod.

    HELP!!!
Here are the specs of my machine:
    2011 13.3" MacBook Pro
    4 GB Ram/320 GB HD
For the past several months my MacBook Pro refuses to shut down or restart without holding down the power button. Whenever I choose to restart or shut down the computer, it will hang on a grey screen. I have even tried letting it hang for an hour, and it still won't shut down. I notice that once in a while it will retart or shut down correctly if I had not used opened iTunes since turning it on. However, even manually closing iTunes before shutting down or restarting does not solve the problem. It seems as though it only shuts down if iTunes was not used since restarting the computer. Is this a registry error? Do I need to reinstall iTunes? I noticed this problem began happening after I uninstalled Kaspersky Virus Scanner, could that be the problem as well? Also, I cannot guarantee that the problem is only associated with iTunes. I just noticed that one of the few times it shut down or restarted correctly, iTunes coincidentally had not been used. Also, this problem started happening while I was still using Lion and has continued despite upgrading to Mountain Lion.
Also, whenever I update my iPod through iTunes, it won't eject properly, and a transparent icon of the iPod displays on the screen even after I have removed it from the USB port. Furthermore, the iPod will only be recognized by iTunes and will only be updated the first time I plug it in. After removing it and plugging it back in, it won't recognize or update the device unless I shut down and restart the computer. I have the latest addition of iTunes. I also have two iPods, one 80 GB Classic, and one 8 GB Nano, and I have the same problem with both.
I have AppleCare. Should I take my macbook to the genius bar?
Applications I normally use are Word, Safari, FireFox, iTunes, FinalDraft, Photo Booth, Notes, Mail, App Store, etc. No real heavy lifting.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated. :-)
    Thank you everyone!!

    I have this question too.

  • IMac freezes in mid application and then can't shut down or reboot

I have a iMac which is about 6 years old with 1 GB RAM, 60 GB hard drive and operating on OS 10.4.8 (Tiger). It has about 16 GB memory free as well.
It was running quite nicely until about 2 months ago and then had probems with it running slower and slower while completing applications, and finally it started freezing in mid application with the spinning beachball of death. The computer has to be shut down by pulling the power. Sometimes I can restart it with the power button and . But this latest time, it did not even start from the C drive with the OS X disc in place.
I tried the simple things like fixing permissions, and then I had tried re-loading Tiger both with archived files and also a clean install. Both times the machine worked beautifully for about a week and then would go through the same sequence, with slower processing time, and then the eventual terminal freeze up.
Any suggestions to salvage this machine? I did take it in to an Apple authorized dealer, where they backed up my files and did the clean install. But I don't have a diagnosis. Is the hard drive corrupted? Anything short of replacing the hard drive (which I am not capable of doing myself) or buying a new computer? I loved this iMac, it has an amazing screen, and despite its age was still a very neat machine. It would be great if there is a solution out there.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There is no such thing as a Mac OS X clean install as my FAQ explains:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
However, your machine is right at the age, or a little beyond where the clock battery may begin to die. This can cause slowdowns and other issues.
The hard drive could also be problematic, as some of these can die in less than a year, while others can last as long as a decade.
The more you install Dashboard widgets, the slower your machine will get, and that can cause problems too. See my FAQ on other slowdowns if neither of these seems to help:

  • Dropped Macbook Pro, Won't shut down

I dropped my Macbook Pro onto a hardwood floor. On impact, it immediately shut down. When I tried to turn it back on, it took about 10 minutes to fully log-in to where it was ready for use. The hard drive seems to be in tact, it definitely processes commands slower than it has before. Once the web browser finally opens, internet usage is no problem, but switching between open windows can take up to 90 seconds. Microsoft Word seems to take a particularly long amount of time when trying to open documents.
The biggest problem is that it will not shut down using the Apple drop-down menu. Shutting down manually by holding down the power button still works, but when I shut down through the menu, everything on the desktop disappears, with the exception of the applications bar at the bottom of the desktop. I will also sometimes get an error message saying that Finder won't quit and therefore I can't logout.
Is this something mechanical that can or needs to be repaired? Any help would be awesome.
    Thanks!

First start your computer with the original DVD that came with the Macbook, then run disk utility on the hard drive to repair it.  If you are still having problems you should run Apple Hardware Test on your computer.

  • Macbook Pro won't shut down or restart because of Finder

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013). Recently, I tried to shut it down, but couldn't. I closed all running apps, then clicked on shut down, but nothing happened except the menu bar on the top of the screen vanished, but the dock was still there. I hit Command+Tab to check which apps were running, and it showed only Finder. When I right clicked on Finder it said Application not Responding. There was a relaunch option as well and I clicked it but nothing happened. How can I fix this? I have to force shutdown it every time. Though I am still able to put it to sleep.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Did you reinstall CS3 after CC?
For that matter, doing an in-place upgrade on the OS is always a gamble with Adobe programs. Reinstalling all the versions you need, in order, would probably solve your problem.
And you shouldn't need to save as IDML after opening the .inx in CC.

  • Computer won't shut down.

When I try to shut my computer down, it thinks for a minute or so, and then will give me an error message about a program (iTunes, iChat, Safari, anything) not shutting down correctly. It tells me to close the program properly and try again. Usually, these programs were properly closed in the first place, but the computer still will not shut down. What should I do?

If you would like to try something instead of just de-powering, try this:
Press Command, Option, and then Escape, holding down each one after you press it.
This should bring up your Force Quit menu. From there, quit out of the programs it lists as giving you an error.
Then you can proceed with your shutdown as normal, as opposed to doing it manually.

  • HT201413 Why does Data Execution Protection or lack thereof keep shutting down iTunes

Why does Data Execution Protection or lack thereof keep shutting down iTunes?

Sounds like you have a battry issue but don't want to believe it.
If a car was running fine on one tank of gas, then you filled it up with another tank of gas and it began to run funny, one might suspect that tank of gas. But let's just say coincidence blew a valve-- would you think the new tank of gas was the culprit?
BUT WAIT!! It just might have been! The gas could have been of higher octane and put more more strain on the valves; you know, like going from 87 octane (OS6) to 93 octane (OS7) and showing you the engine was on the edge of compromise.
Sometimes you have to go with common sense. If everything else is ruled out, it must be the battery. And if it runs fine one moment in OS6 but immediately ***** in OS7, I'd believe my battery was suspect-- though comfy-- in OS6 but the OS7 showed its true power.
Moreover, if you had the answer-- or didn't want to believe someone's more competent advice-- why did you even call?  You've already shown that you don't know much when you asked if you could go backwards after setting up the new OS as a new phone.
Additonally, if you're such the know-it-all, but yourself the $29 battery and put it in yourself. It's a piece of cake.
