Vista RC2 64 EFI

I am waiting for delivery of my new MacBook Pro. I am supposed to get it November 3rd and cannot wait. I was wondering since the Core 2 Duo chip is 64 bit and the Vista RC2 64 bit is EFI capable, could this version of Vista be installed without boot camp. Has anyone tried it yet? Or am I misinformed about Vista RC2 64 bit having EFI. I know the 32 bit version does not have it for sure.
Waiting for Delivery of MACBOOK PRO 2.33 C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   160GB HDD 2GB RAM Glossy 15.4" screen

1) Core 2 Duo is 64bit
2) Vista does not support EFI, 32bit or 64bit flavors
3) You would have to find your own drivers as the Apple supplied drivers are 32bit only and will not work with 64bit Windows.

  • Problems in Vista RC2

I installed the PC Suite in vista RC2 and evrything seems to work fine except for backup. Evrytime I try to backup it crashes at 60%. I keep getting the error that connection is lost. Resetting the phone to factory defaults doesn't seem to solve it. Anyone else have the same problem?Message Edited by diablo_lk on 28-Dec-2006

    Proxie_dk,
    Also,
You might want to make sure that you have done the following to try and help resolve or workaround the problem more:
Make sure you have set the correct timinns and voltages for Mushkin memory in BIOS, more information at Mushkin website under support.
Make sure you have the latest version of the BIOS for your motherboard, as several manufacturers did release updates for the problems with NVIDIA and Creative compatability. Look at support section on the XFX support site.
Make sure you are using the latest motherboard chipset drivers available from NVIDIA. 5.25 is the latest, and the international package is here.
Make sure you are using the latest graphics drivers available from NVIDIA. 86.8 is the latest, and the international package is here.
Also, perhaps not as important as the above, make sure you have the latest Windows Updates installed using Microsoft Update.

  • Windows Vista RC2 Build 5

Hi i just installed windows vista rc2
i also installed the driver for my X-Fi platinum sound card.
but i can only list to music on my headphones.
when i configure the speakers and test them in vista i can hear trough the speakers , but when i try to listen to anything else i don't hear anything except with my headphone.
    what am i doing wrong?

Did you switch to headphones/speakers in settings? Also, left click on sound icon on taskbar and choose mixer. Vista lets you change volume of each sound application by itself, reason i bring this up i have found sometimes it will have volume all the way down on certain programs by default.
When i first installed foobar in vista it would not play sound till i figured out mixer had it down to zero sound volume by default. hehe

  • Vista RC2 possible on iMac?

My family recently aquired a new iMac (1st gen, 20 in), and I was wondering if it is possible to run Vista RC2 on it. I have heard of varying degrees of success with RC1, but nothing on RC2, despite extensive searching on these forums and googling. My question is this: Is it possible to run RC2 on an iMac? If so, can you simply use Bootcamp in the way it was originally intended? I already downloaded RC2, but would it be safer to use RC1?
    Thanks,
    Hart

DMW, there are plenty of reasons to want to run Windows, not the least of which is that you have no idea how Hart needs to use his computer. If you have no need for Windows, there is no reason for you to install it, but let other make that decision for themselves.
Most of us here have chosen OS X as out primary OS, but find a need for Windows now and again. It is nice that we have that choice now.
Hart, It certainly should be possible without a problem. I have RC1 on my BlackBook right now and it works as well as could be expected for beta software. I have not been able to get the download started for RC2, but I will install it as soon as I can.
There really is no risk to installing either RC1 or RC2 as you can delete the Windows partition and restore your iMac to a single volume at any time.

  • Vision W And Vista RC2 Connectivity Probl

I've installed the software on the CD and CM 5.00.3 update, but when I connect the player, it tries to install the driver, asks for the cd and still can't find it and that's as far as I get, nowhere.
The player is fully charged and I can't see how RC2 is the problem, as my Vision M used to work perfectly with it.
    Any help, greatly appreciated.
    Cheers.

Looks like a warning for other Vista RC2 users then, don't buy a Vision W as it's obviously incompatible at the moment.
Looks like I'll have to sell this on and get another Vision M, which is a pity.

Yes they work great in RC2.

  • Vista - Sleep FINALLY fixed, still annoying Random Shutdowns

Ok, they FINALLY fixed it so the Mac Pro wakes from sleep in Vista RC1 with the recent EFI update, now they need to fix the Random Shutdowns. These occur as if you were telling your system to shutdown, I do not suspect the power supply because it is not an abrupt power loss, it gracefully shuts down, but of-course is annoying as h3ll...
Here's looking forward to the Leopard/Vista releases when all of this should be worked out!
    SH
Does Vista RC2 run any better? Have better Bluetooth support?

... well... that was really a (slap in face) help ??
I never tried sleep or hibernate, but I read the latest RTM had some fixes in there regarding better support now for laptops and sleep.
Ignorance is bliss perhaps? or, it is a mixed world? or, there is still software that is not available...
How about, curiosity? that's always been man's greatest strength, too.
Being able to run Windows Vista on Mac Pro must be something even Apple engineers are keep to do and improve on.
Every release for OS X takes a couple updates to be "ready" for use. Long-term that has meant 2-3 updates for the last three+ releases, and each release meant more work for everyone, developer and end user, while "rules" change and hardware and software has to be updated to accommodate those changes. Even good changes are still costly, and some have been costly.
I've lived and survived FIVE releases, $600+ for one machine license, and over a year of that was "1.0" issues all over again. And the same story will get played out next year, too, bet on it.
Some people like to explore linux and alternatives. I have, and while I've never felt linux offered the desktop experience I want, I thought SuSE 6.4 gave OS 8/9 a real run for the money at the time.
    Things to Love/Hate about Vista
I can now help my Dad 1200 miles away with his PC Windows w/o needing a PC. I can run multiple VMs. One computer, multiple OSs. VMware, Parallels, CrossOver, as well as native installs.
And maybe, just maybe, a more secure desktop PC will help everyone. However, a really good balanced review might actually be one from ComputerWorld - Vista may make Mac converts of IT folks!
IT folks can support XP/Vista and be running Mac OS X

  • Windows Vista and Shuffle 2

I have been succesfully running the second Beta release of Vista. My I tunes works well with my existing Mini. However I just bought a Shuffle2 and I am unable to transfer music to it.
I keep getting a message "unknown error 1418" I also get the other 50 eror message. Is ANYONE out there running Vista and has anyone seen and found a fix for error 1418?
I am so frustrated that it won't work:)

I have been able to successfully input songs on the shuffle via iTunes on Vista RC2 for a while now...
1a) Check and see if it will sync under XP compatibility mode (right click the program, not the shortcut> click properties, there will be a compatibility tab). A popup may nag you about changing the compatibility, just ignore it for the time being.
1b) Make sure your hardware drivers are up-to-date. That is a major issue, even now with Vista's consumer release.
    2) The iPod service might be misbehaving. You can restart it by going to start> right click my computer>
manage> services and applications> services> click iPod service> click restart service.
    3) Another thing, make sure you are able to use your USB ports. NT, 2000, XP and Vista can and occasionally do block bidirectional ports (or other interfaces) for "the user's good."
I'm actually surprised that Apple didn't update iTunes for better Vista compatibility when the "colored" shuffles came out... oh well...

  • Video freezing in windows vista

I am using Windows Vista RC2 64x and anytime i try to watch any type of video in itunes or quicktime, my computer freezes and i get a blue screen. It also does the same thing when i try to import the videos into itunes. I have tried it on two different computers running vista and have had the same problem. The computer i am using it on now has plenty of processor speed and 2gb ram along with a 512mb video card.
Any suggestions on how to get it to stop freezing so i can watch my videos?

I don't believe QuickTime is supported on a Windows 64 bit OS (even Vista).

  • 5.1 Help with Audigy 2

I have an Audigy 2 ZS Platnium Pro and I recently upgraded to the latest drivers, bad mistake as I am having heck now trying to get everything work right again. I have Logitech Z-680 5. speaker setup. Before the upgrade in drivers, my settings were working the way I wanted to, the sound was working just fine. After the upgrade however, for some reason the newer drivers did something and messed up settings (restoring to defaults doesn't resolve the issues I am going to explain)? In World of Warcraft, the sounds seem far more distant and quiet than before, throwing me completely off. In the Speaker Test, when I choose that, I hear sound out of only the front and center channels only. Now I know the rear work because when I listen to music I can hear it via CMSS. The Windows control pannel and Creative's are both set to 5.. I tried the speaker calibration which correctly produces the right sound output and it has no effect when I enable the calibration. This boggles me on how the sound comes from the front and center (when it tests the rear, it plays through the fronts instead) but obviously the rears work cause I can hear sound while playing music. The speakers are setup for 6 Channel Direct which is the mode needed for 5. sound from a card like the Audigy. I have rolled back to previous driver version and still have the same thing. I am stuck with the weird 5. setup and it wont' go away even if I uninstall all the Creative drivers and apps and reinstall them. This is very frustrating and I don't want to have to do a clean install this close to Vista just because Creative's poor excuse for software decides to take a weird turn and not work right (who would've thought, eh?)?I'm about ready to turn on the onboard audio for the A8N-SLI Deluxe as it will probably work correctly. I"ll probably wipe Vista RC2 off ther other HDD and test if a clean install with the new drivers (or old) will work fine, they should. It should not be a hardware problem as the ports clearly work, just the software does not want to work! I just want my sound working properly again, sucks I have to go through a bunch of BS because drivers hosed how the system is working.

Just an update, did a fresh install of MCE2005 and the sound works fine, completely uninstalled everything on my current install, drivers, apps, etc, and installed them just like I did on the new install, and still have the same problems. I even used Driver Cleaner to make sure?I wiped out everything, it has to be a setting or something just laying around that I can't get rid of without doing a complete reinstall, unless some application is messing with it that's installed on my current install but I don't know what that would be.

  • I just solved all my iTunes problems. Seriously, I did.

Hey everyone. I'm struggling just like you all with a million different problems since "upgrading" to iTunes 7.0 and 7.0.1. But I just solved my problems, with no help from Apple..
Admittedly, I am using Windows Vista RC2... though perhaps this solution will trigger brilliance for those of you using XP. Here's what I did:
I clicked on Help>Run Diagnostics, and ran the Network diagnostics. I noticed the following:
"Current user is not an administrator."
Well, that didn't make sense to me. There's only one user on my computer, and that's me.. and I'm an admistrator. But - and here's the golden ticket of information - Vista automatically runs programs as "not an administrator" so as to prevent the program from taking over your computer, and apparently, this newest version of iTunes can't handle that.
This feature of Vista's seems like a pain in the butt, but it's actually a good security measure. We could argue that at another time. Let's not.
Anyway, you have to tell iTunes to "Run As Administrator". Here's how:
--- Find the iTunes.exe file on your computer (not the shortcut on your start menu, but the actual .exe file). It's probably somewhere like c:/program files/itunes/itunes.exe or something like that.
--- Right click on the file, and click "Properties".
--- Click on the "Compatability" tab.
--- At the bottom, click "Run this Program as Administrator".
--- Click OK, and close that window.
Now try running iTunes, and run the diagnostics again. This time, it should say:
    Current user is an administrator.
Now, see if any of your problems are fixed. In my case, this fixed several problems.. including my inability to download any song from the ITMS, and my inability to play any songs that were previously downloaded from the ITMS.
    Hope this helps someone!
      Windows XP Pro

Thank you, this is exactly what I needed to do. I'm in business again! I had thought of doing this, but didn't think my music would automatically transfer into the new iTunes. It did transfer and I updated to the new version and I'm good to go. Thank you again, so very much

  • Macbook Pro story... Win to Mac user Help needed!!

I have been a windows user for many a year now, always satisfied with the OS but never pleased. Too many things go wrong with windows and I hate all the system registry bull. That and the dreaded viruses and popups.
I have spent a couple of years now looking across the water at you mac users, since my brother purchased his mac mini I have been droolling over the design and look of the macs. When Apple released the Intel based machines I pricked my ears up hoping that Vista would support EFI so I could dual boot. This was dashed when it was anounced that Vista would stick with BIOS.
I was back to square one then. You see I wanted the design of mac and the stability of OSX with the backup of windows. Being a school teacher I need windows to sync with the interactive whiteboards and other kids based programs.
My prayers were finally answered when apple released Boot Camp. It was beyond my dreams that apple would take such a bold step and open up there computers to the likes of me.
So after hours of pondering and reading through the posts on this forum I finally took the plunge, rushed down to my apple store in Brum and with the educational discount walked away with a Macbook for £1636.68. I was pleased and poohing myself at the same time having spent that kind of money (being a student teacher means money is tight!).
So I got the thing home and was amazed at its design and looks, it truely is a fantastic looking machine. Turning it on for the first time I was very apprehensive, all the posts about whine and heat had made me very nervous. After going through the setup and taking half an hour to get my WIFI working I finally started to play with it.
The whine was there and the heat, two things that I had been dreading, the heat did not bother me one bit. It was hot, very hot in places, but how often do you touch the bar across the top of the keyboard? I think this is a good place to allow the heat to disipate, I have worked on laptops where your blood starts to boil beacause the area where your plams rest is so hot. The whine did annoy me, it seems so strange that my computer made more noise when is was not doing anything compared to when it was. The photobooth fix worked perfectly which I figured i could live with until a proper fix is released. Plus I have read that windows does not have this problem so it must be software related.
As I was going skiing for a week i figured it would be ideal for me to take my computer to get to grips with OSX. Thats what I did and can I tell you that I was more than impressed, I really did not understand the comment people (including my bro) mad,e, 'it just works'. Until I spent a day using it, programs open up seamlessly and you can have several high powered programs running at the same time with no lag at all, fascinating.
I came back from holiday (last saturday) loving my new machine and ready to install boot camp plus start transferring my old files. Then, and this is where it gets interesting, I read a couple of posts about apple's Higher Education site and the amazing discounts it gives.
I can tell you that right now I am pretty ****** off, before i bought my mac I intentionally asked the guys in store if there was any way I could get a macbook for cheaper, online or anywhere. I was told that the maximum discount i could get was 8% off the comp and 17.5% off applecare. Now I discover that if i had purchased through my uni, I could have got 15% off my Macbook and applecare for only £60! Can you see why I'm a touch upset?
Any ideas on what I can do? I have had the computer for less than 14 days, I love it to bits and don't really want to take it back, plus if I do will I be charged a restocking fee? It seems it would still be cheaper to do this but what do you guys think? thanks for your help.
The reason for the long post is i wanted to get across how pleased I am with my macbook pro and OSX, if anyone has any doubts to buying one don't they are fantastic and OSX is a breath of fresh air, just remember the Higher Education store online if you are a student!

    Another update guys.
Went into the apple store in Birmingham, UK, which is where I bought it. I explained the situation calmly and they were very sorry for the misunderstanding. They instantly said that they could not match the offer that found on the higher education store.
The option I had was to keep the machine or they would give me a full refund, even though I had had it for over a week and it had a scratch on the case! Was a little shocked that I was not charged a restocking fee! Anyway, now I have no mac at all and it will take a couple of days for the money to go back on my card. I was very sad to see it go, I had really grown attached to it and am now stuck on windows again!
Can I just say what fantastic service apple provide, I love the idea of simply taking your computer into the store to get a fix rather than Dell which is online only.
Now I have a problem, I like the new 17" but think it will be too big to lug from home to school, I would like the dual layered superdrive though. Do I wait for the macbook pro update? Will they come down in price as the 17" is cheaper than a matching 15"?
    Help!

  • Two operating systems, one library

I'm using iTunes 7.0.2.16 on Windows XP Pro with no problems. I just installed a dual-boot of Windows Vista RC2 for fun, and installed iTunes within Vista as well (in a separate "Program Files" folder, of course) but I can't access the XP iTunes library from the Vista installation of iTunes. I've tried the Shift-key library selection process while starting iTunes, and the library file opens, but there's nothing in it.
After trying this initially in Vista, I went back and confirmed that I can still access the library just fine in XP. The XP library files are not (yet) being overwritten from Vista.
The XP iTunes settings point to D:\Music for its library which consequently means the library files are in D:\Music\iTunes. I've set the Vista iTunes to the same path (D:\Music), and told it to open the "iTunes Library.itl" file manually, but as before I see a blank library.
I don't want to export/import the library from XP to Vista as I want to keep everything in its original XP location - ideally I'd like to be able to access the same library from either OS no matter which one I've booted into.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
      Windows XP Pro

This is difficult to do because one, iTunes isn't capable with Vista yet, even if you enable the "Xp Compatibility mode" (it will only work some of the time!), two, your having two different OS's and iTunes editing one file and so even if you get it to work there might be some corruption.
First, I would change the iTunes Folder in settings (on both XP and Vista) to the folder (normally "iTunes Music")(my settings point to "C:\Documents and Settings\mjd\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music") with all of the artist's folders in it. iTunes will automatically recognize the iTunes library files and attempt to import them.
If that doesn't work I would try copying your initial (XP) iTunes folder to a new place and then trying iTunes within Vista. If the files show up then you know that it isn't a compatibility problem.
Then, if it works, delete that copied folder, THEN delete all of the songs in iTunes (on Vista) and then point iTunes to the old folder and then see if it works.
If the copied folder still shows up as blank then try uninstalling iTunes in Vista and then reinstalling it. IF that doesn't fix the problem, then you will have to wait till Apple makes a Vista compatible iTunes.
