Vista Recovery Help - Satellite L300-149

Hi all!
Have tried numerous places and can't find the answers I'm looking for, so here I am.
My nephew has a Toshiba Satellite L300 - 149 that won't boot up past the Windows Vista log in screen.
I want to do a full system restore on it (ie. back to factory settings) .
Now, it was shipped without recovery discs as seems to be the norm these days so, after much seraching I found the directions for pressing either the F8 and the zero key on boot up.
Now.... F8 brings up a menu (zero key does nothing) but the menu (Advanced Options or something) DOES NOT include the option to repair the system. It brings up a list of other things including....
ENABLE BOOT LOGGING
ENABLE VGA MODE
LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION
DIRECTORY SERVICES
DEBUGGING MODE
DISABLE AUTO RE START
There are a couple of other options too, but not a one that offers a complete recovery.
Can anyone shed light on how I can do a full restore via the HDD, or whether this model even supports the option? (There's been absolutely no tampering with the OS since it was purchased.) Failing that, where can I get restore discs from?
thanks
Bear

It was a preinstalled Vista - the laptop came via Carphone Warehouse and T-Mobile on one of their deals. It has the sticker on with the key code so it's all legit.
My nephew hadn't created any recovery discs himself, and I didn't think to when he purchased it a couple of years ago.
There's nothing on it that can't be replaced so a full HDD recovery that overwrites everything isn't an issue.
Thing is, I've followed all the instructions I can find and so far none of them have worked, and the "Repair Your Computer" option after pressing F8 is *definitely* not there when I get to that point. If it was, I'd have used it.
Guess I'll have to hunt around for available HDD Recovery discs.
Thanks for your responses folks :)

  • Help needed with system recovery Satellite L300-149

    Hi
    We have a Satellite L300-149.
Was running really slowly so wanted to reset it to factory settings.
Did the 'press F12 when starting, put disk in' etc etc BUT have a horrible feeling that I put a disk in that actually belonged to a different Toshiba we used to use a U300.
The 'give away' was that the user manual for the U300 is now on the desktop on the Satellite :-/
I hoped that this wouldn't be a major problem BUT the F8 key has now disappeared making it impossible to connect to the internet.
I looked online and read that the L300 sometimes doesn't come with a disk as the info is kept on a separate part of the hard drive so hoped I could reset it back to factory settings again but when I click F2 on start up and go to the option to restore it, noting happens.
    Can anyone please help??????

    Hi
    Forget the HDD recovery now
You have recovered the system using another disk and this has deleted the HDD recovery image files. So this option is NOT possible!
You are right the L300 and all other notebooks are not delivered with Recovery disks.
The recovery disk has to be created using the preinstalled software called Recovery Disk Creator. But this is also NOT possible because you removed the preinstalled system and the files which are needed for such recovery disk are not available anymore!
But if everything work properly except of the WLan FN + F8 key, then I would recommend to install only the Wlan driver. I think the key does not work because the right WLan driver is not installed.
I think the Satellite L300-149 supports the Wlan Realtek RTL8187B chip.
So install the right Wlan driver which you can find here:

  • Cannot enable Vista Aero on Satellite L300-15v with Intel CPU

I installed Vista for my Satellite L300-15v which i bought without system.
I can't set HIGHER memory for the graphics ( shared ) memory which is between 0 and 256.
Please notify me how to do this and whether this is the reason why Aero effects doesn't work *or my pc doesn't meet the minimum requirements*.
    note: L300 is 2.13 celeron | graphics: Intel 965 - GMA X3100 , 2GB of Ram

    Hi
Firstly you should check if your Vista version would support Aero.
Windows Vista Home Basic doesnt support Aero.
So you need a higher version of Vista to use such feature
Please also check this Microsoft page: [Troubleshoot problems with Windows Aero|http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/c33fe91a-9e6f-41f4-ae82-3ed2d5fa2fbf1033.mspx#EZD]

  • Where can I get the Vista Recovery disk - Satellite P205D-S8802

    Hey Guys,
I bought my Toshiba Satellite P205D-S8802 last year
I got it without a Recorvy CD but if I want to formation the HDD i need the disk
Where can i get the Disk?
I have the orginal Windows Vista home premium(on the buttom of the laptop is a label from Microsoft)
    Thank you for help

There are two ways to solve your problem:
You can order new copy of recovery DVD by nearest authorized service provider or
You can use original Microsoft installations DVD for clean Vista installation
All necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can find on Toshiba support page.
BTW: MasterG is right about activation key at the bottom. This key belongs to preinstalled version you got with your notebook.

  • Satellite L300-17L PSLBCE

I recently inquired on where to get support and drivers for this newly bought laptop and was correctly directed. Thanks.
    The problem I have is that when I try to install some of the utilities that I got for this laptop I get an error message of a missing module. I dont know where to find it. For instance, the Power Saver that I downloaded doesn't even install. When I start to install I get the following message;
A fatal error has occured. This program will be terminated. Code: 0x2
I get this message despite formatting my computer several times. What could be the problem?
    Please help.

    Satellite L300-17L
When you look up the Toshiba drivers and utilities here, you'll need to look up the Satellite L300 with Short Model No. PSLBCE.
when I try to install some of the utilities that I got for this laptop I get an error message of a missing module.
Tell us at least what version of Windows you use. That laptop apparently starts life with none.

  • Satellite L300-19U - How can I reinstall Vista without working DVD drive?

    Hello
I have a big problem with my notebook Toshiba Satellite L300-19U.
I did installed 1month ago Windows XP on it and now is my DVD-ROM broken, it didn't read DVD just CD's. So I can't use my Vista recovery DVD to reinstall Vista. Did anyone had the same problem?
I heard there is a partition (hiden) where the recovery is on it. How I can find this partition? And if I find her, can I boot directly from the partition to recover Vista? If no,is there a other chance to recover it?
Please help me to reinstall the Vista recovery partition!

    Hi!
The hidden partition that you mean is a Windows Vista feature but you cant restore Vista with this partition. The point is that the partition is also deleted because you have installed Windows XP on it.
Restoring Vista without recovery disk is only possible if Vista is still installed on it. Then you can go in the advanced boot menu and select repair my computer. Then you can choose the Toshiba HDD recovery option. This is a feature that restores Vista from the second partition.
But as I said only possible with installed Vista.
Just one question: Why do you dont go to an authorized service provider? If your notebook is still under warranty you should get a new CD/DVD drive for free. Normally it should only take few days and then you are able to install Vista again! :)

  • Satellite L300 - Recovery wipes C drive then fails to rebuild

My Satellite L300 has just come back from Toshiba for repair under warranty and before having a chance to burn Recovery Disks came up with the BSOD. Removed hard drive and placed in a SATA cradle and ran chkdsk which repaired it to the extent that (back in the laptop) I could at least access the Recovery Console.
I selected return to Toshiba factory state (or something similar - can't remember the exact wording!). C prompt screen came up and all seemed to be going well until it came up with an error. Retried it twice but the error / failure notice came up both times. Tried to reboot to safe mode but no bootmgr. Removed the disk again and placed it in the SATA cradle and the C partition seems to have been wiped.
With no windows installation at all, is it possible to run the Toshiba recovery (start and holding 0 does nothing)?
Would a Windows Vista recovery disc do anything or enable me to reaccess Toshiba's recovery?
    Any ideas? Help,Please!

    Hi mate,
Wait a moment, please! Which error message you get exactly and what you mean exactly with the SATA cradle?
Notebooks are country specific so which L300 you have exactly? This is important because the HDD recovery works different on the notebooks or lets say there are different ways how to start it.
    > With no windows installation at all, is it possible to run the Toshiba recovery (start and holding 0 does nothing)?
Another question: How you want to start the HDD recovery procedure if now Windows is installed? ;)
    Right, thats not possible!
In your case I would order a new recovery disk. You should contact the ASP in your country!

  • What is right Recovery CD for Satellite L300?

I recently bought "Toshiba Satellite L300" which had Windows 7 operating system but the Recovery CDs had Windows XP.
And my hard disk was single partition and Microsoft office was not working on this notebook and I used that CD to fix these problems.
But I lost my previous Windows 7.
Now it is Windows Xp SP 3 on my computer.
But I am not satisfied with XP want Windows 7.
How can i get it again for free?
Please let me know that what is right Recovery CD for "Toshiba Satellite L300". ?

    >I recently bought "Toshiba Satellite L300" which had Windows 7 operating system but the Recovery CDs had Windows XP.
Hmm this is strange I have no clue what Satellite L300 this is but usually an L300 series was preinstalled with Vista Home Premium
So Im wondering why Win 7 was preinstalled and why you get Win XP recovery disk
Usually the L300 should be equipped with an HDD recovery partition which would contain the Toshiba image.
It should be able to recover the new notebook using the HDD recovery and this should help you reinstall the Vista OS.
In my opinion you should talk with your dealer maybe the notebook was a replacement device????
    Who knows

  • Satellite L300 - Perform a repair installation of Windows Vista

    Hi,
I have a Satellite L300. I have NO dvd of windows vista, the seller says me that the dvd of windows is inside the pc.
Now I have to resolve an windows update issue (80073712 - kb 971644) and in this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957310/en-us I don't know how execute the steps of method 3 because i have no dvd of vista.
    Can you help me???
*Method 3: Perform a repair installation of Windows Vista*
*When you perform a repair installation, this restores the current Windows Vista installation to the version on the installation DVD. This requires you to reinstall all updates that are not included in that version of Windows Vista.*
*To perform a repair installation of Windows Vista, follow these steps:*
    *Restart the computer.*
*Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive.*
*Note If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, click Start, type <Drive>:\setup.exe in the Search box, and then click Setup in the programs list. Then, click Install Now.*
*Click Go online to obtain the latest updates for installation (recommended).*
*Insert the product key if you are prompted for it.*
*Click to accept the Microsoft Software License Terms.*
*On the Which type of installation to you want screen, click Upgrade.*
*When the installation is complete, restart the computer, and then try to install updates again.*

    Hi fardei,
If you use the HDD recovery to reinstall Windows, your whole computer will not be formatted. Only the first partition will be deleted and thats all. Check the Toshiba document how the HDD recovery option works.
Using the Toshiba recovery disk creator tool allows you to create a recovery disk. Normally on the first start up where you purchased the notebook, you did get the following message:
    +Important INFORMATION+
+your system is equipped with hard disk recovery system. if you need to repair+
+your computer by restoring it to original factory state, you can do it directly+
+from harddisk (press F8 when you boot your computer, choose "Repair your computer"+
+and follow the menue instructions) or create a bootable Recovery Disc Medium for this purpose.+
+Toshiba recommends you to create Recovery Disc Medium using the "Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator" to ensure+
+hat you are able to restore your computer to the original factory installed state, even if your computer+

  • Satellite L300 - Disk read error so I can't start Vista

    Please can you help?
Have a Toshiba Satellite L300. All i am getting is Disk Read Error occured, please press Ctrl Alt + Delete.
How can I get it to boot up again. I havent a clue what to do next just keep pressing Ctrl Alt + Delete and it says a Disk read error occurred.
I'm going round in circles in. Running Windows Vista Premium.

    Hi!
Can you access the advanced boot menu if you press F8 after you have started the notebook? Then you could start the Toshiba HDD recovery option (select repair my computer).
If you cant access the advanced boot menu you have to reinstall Windows Vista. Therefore you can use the Toshiba recovery disk if you boot from it.

  • Satellite L300 & Windows Vista are not recognising Ipod

hi, i'm hoping you can help!!! I have been directed here by Microsoft & Apple - below is my issue and also Microsofts response:
i have an ipod nano 3rd gen, working off a near new laptop with windows vista. itunes is all set up, no issues with ipod at all but when i plug the ipod in, it only charges the ipod.
computer does not recognise the ipod at all, in windows or itunes. there is no portable device driver in the Device Manager or anywhere at all.
it is not the usb port as other usb's have been recognised. i've tried in all other usb ports as well. bottom line is that windows vista (and itunes) is not recognising the ipod at all.
i've been in touch with apple, with no avail. i've googled solutions only to find hundreds of other posts with exactly the same problem but no helpful solution. windows vista has no portable device port - how does one get this on their pc???
i've been at this for 4 days now and have uninstalled/reinstalled way too many times and i'm at wits end!! any advice (other than "have you tried another usb port" or "have you reset the ipod" or anything similar) would be much appreciated.
once again, there is no portable/ipod device drive located on this computer. please, i'm really hoping someone can help =)
    *Microsofts response:*
    Hi,
Step 1:Turn USB bus power back
If laptop is configured to conserve power by turning off power on the USB (Universal Serial Bus), it might not recognize a connected iPod.
To turn USB bus power back, you may follow the steps mentioned in the Apple link below
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1401
You stated Windows vista has no portable device port Normally, all portable devices are connected via a USB port and they appear under Universal Serial Bus controllers in the Device Manager.
    Step 2:Reinstall USB controllers.
First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:
    1. Click "Start", type in Device Manager the Search bar and press "Enter". Click Continue if necessary.
    2. In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the "Host Controller", click "Uninstall" and click "OK".
    3. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".
Then, restart your computer and windows will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.
    If the issue still persists,
*Step 3:Download and install the latest chipset drivers from the laptop manufacturers website.*
*So here I am with the issue still not resolved. *How do i Download and install the latest chipset drivers in order to have Toshiba Satellite L300 & Microsoft Vista recognise my ipod??*
    Many thanks in advance!

    > Step 3:Download and install the latest chipset drivers from the laptop manufacturers website.
    >*So here I am with the issue still not resolved. How do i Download and install the latest chipset drivers >in order to have Toshiba Satellite L300 & Microsoft Vista recognise my ipod?
Install an hardware diagnostic tool like Everest home Edit or similar.
This tool would provide all hardware details about your notebook.
It would list all devices and chipset name too.
I think its Intel chipset so you could find the driver on the Intel page

  • Re: Satellite L300-18D - How can I get a Vista Restore disk?

    Hi everyone
My laptop (Satellite L300-18D) was seriously infected by viruses, everything corrupted. I need to resinstall Vista but don't have the restore disk. After searching around I managd to download a restore disk from some site, but when I used this disk, it gave me an error code which meant the product key was wrong. I used the product key from the bottom of the laptop (I trust this is an OEM). So I guess I need a restore disk that will work with my OEM product key.
How can I get this restore disk that will work with my OEM licence?
Also, I tried to install XP on my laptop, but it kept giving me a message saying it could not detect the hard disk, there is nothing wrong with the hard disk, I have tested it on another laptop. Is there any sort of barrier o installing XP on this laptop which came with Vista originally. Is there a security meassure somewhere that stoped me from installing XP?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
The original Toshiba recovery disk can be purchased here:
    https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
Its not expensive as far as I know its about 30Euros

  • Satellite L300-1AY recovery not working

    Hello,
I have a question about the recovery for a Tosihba Satellite L300-1AY with Windows Vista pre-installed.
I wanted to recover my laptop and when I pressed F8 during start-up I could choose the restore my computer.
But after that part I got a message-box (System Recovery Options) telling me that the installed programs could not start and the only option I had was press OK so the computer would turn off.
I was wondering if there was any way this could be fixed or if there's another way to recover my computer.
    Thanks,
    Pascal

    Hi
You could recover the notebook using the Recovery DVD which you have hopefully created before this issue happened
Did you create such recovery DVD?
If not then only the HDD recovery option can be used.
For this you have to press F8 after notebook has been powered up.
    Then choose Repair my Computer.
Then a new window will appear and then you could choose Toshiba Recovery.
If this procedure will not start up and if you will be not able to use the HDD recovery then you need a Toshiba recovery DVD.
If you didnt create the recovery DVD then you could order it from here:
