Vista Share Does Not Appear in Finder Shared Section

I consider myself a fairly technical guy, but I gotta say, I'm extremely frustrated trying to get a Vista64 machine to show up in the Shared section of Finder on my MacBook Pro (10.5.6). This has been a problem for me since Leopard came out, upgrade or new installation.
I can access the Vista shares via Finder > Go > Connect to Server, but I'm tired of this manual work-around. I'd like to see the PC available on the sidebar.
What's given me hope is that I can see other PC shares on other people's networks. This weekend I was on an Airport Express driven network and I could see a Vista32 and an XP machine in the sidebar. Having built and configured all 3 components of that setup, I know I did nothing special with the Vista NTVLM2 settings, or the Airport Express DNS server, or my own MacBook Pro's settings in order to see those PCs in the sidebar. We're all on the same workgroup setting, on their network and on mine at home, so no workgroup changes were made or required.
Does anyone have suggestions to remedy this? Why I could see the shares in the Finder sidebar on that network with standard configuration PCs and router, but not on my own network at home?
I see lots of related discussions that end with the OP saying "Thanks for your post, but it still doesn't work". Is this is known bug? What happened to the ease with which Tiger would display the PC shares?
Thank you

I'm using an Airport Extreme, and I'm not aware of UPnP settings in the Airport Utility.
On the Mac, I set up a Parallels Vista instance in bridged mode and verified that I can see the other Vista PC share folders, so I know that the Vista PC has been set up correctly.
Additionally, as mentioned before, I switched DNS Servers several times, but settled on an alternative Rogers DNS to avoid their awful failed lookup ad page (64.71.255.202 if anyone needs it).
I also tried adding the Vista PC IP to my Mac hosts file, which oddly showed the Mac on the Vista side, but nothing on the Mac side.
I also goofed around in the smb.conf file with some settings, but alas, nada.
The only thing that might explain why the Airport Express network (Vista, XP) provided me with shares in the sidebar and not my own Airport Extreme network (just Vista) could be that it's a master browser issue. I saw a couple of posts about this.
If the Vista machine is the master browser, nothing will show in the sidebar, but if XP or a Mac is the master browser, then the sidebar will show shares. I don't have a way to verify this as I'm not sure how to force one machine to be a master browser over another. I'm suspicious if this will do anything as I've found other posts saying exactly the opposite scenario.
Is there anyone out there that has had a network, possibly with Airport Extreme, one Mac (Leopard), one Vista PC, and Vista share is showing in the Finder sidebar?

    my MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013) using OS X  Yosemite10.10.2 has properly connected G-drive Slim, but it does not appear in Finder;

Does the drive show in Disk Utility? Try a restart.

Is the device lost or stolen? If so it may be turned off, not connected to the internet, and/or have a dead battery in which case it may never appear.

  • Drive does not appear in finder

My Time Machine drive is connected but the drive itself does not appear in the device list in finder. I can set Time Machine preferences in Time Machine software but I cannot access the drive through Finder.

Thought I'd post a couple of screenshots to help - a pic is worth.....
This is the System Preferences > CD/DVD Pane which no longer appears on Macs without an optical drive (this is from my MBP with a Superdrive):
This is the iPhoto Preferences window (within iPhoto):
But, none of that applies to external optical drives because they will never show - the preferences you set will show the media, but not the drive. My external optical drive is brand new from OWC and it does not show. However, it works like a charm.
As for your RAID setup - as I said, i can't help there because I have never used it.

  • Mitigation Monitor does not appear in Mitigation Controls section

In GRC RAR in the u201CMitigationu201D tab, I added a new Mitigation Monitor in the u201CAdministratorsu201D section and a new Mitigating Control. When I try to add the new monitor in the u201CMonitorsu201D tab within the u201CMitigation Controlsu201D section, the new monitor does not appear as an option. Iu2019m pretty sure I have every bit of authorization possible, so I donu2019t think this is an auth issue. I do not have any users assigned to the new mitigation control, so that isnu2019t the problem either. Is there a trick to getting my new monitor to show up? Thank you!

You also are required to first add the users to a Business Unit: Mitigation - Business Units - Search
Edit the business unit associated with the Mitigating control that you created and add the users.
Go back to the mitigating control and you should not see the users that you associated with the Business Unit.

  • Flash drive does not appear in Finder or on desktop

When I plug a flash drive into my iMac, it sometimes does not show up in Finder or on the desktop (or if it shows up when I plug it in, it disappears after awhile). As a result, I am unable to eject it properly, and when I physically disconnect it a message appears telling me I removed it improperly and may have corrupted my data. Another discussion thread said to go into Finder> Preferences and choose to show CDs, DVDs and iPods on the Desktop. I had already done this, so there must be another solution. Any help?

launch *disk utility* (in applications > utilities). if DU can see the drive, try repairing it.
perhaps reformatting the drive for Mac (make sure the partition map scheme of the USB drive is GUID or Apple Partition Map (APM) and the volume format is Mac OS extended (journaled)) will bring it back to its senses.

  • External Hard Drive does not appear in finder

We purchased a 1 TB G Drive Q from the Apple Store. It is connected to my wife's iMac running the most current update of Leopard by 800 firewire and appears on her desktop and works flawlessly with time machine. I am connected to the same drive intermittently with my MacBookPro also running the most current update of Leopard. i connect with 400 firewire. Initially the drive would not appear in the finder. for the initial backup, i turned the hard drive off and on and then it would appear and i did the backup but now when i connect to the 400 firewire port, it still doesn't appear in the finder. i would much prefer not to need to turn my back up drive off and on each time i want to use time machine. i should also mention that when i connect any of my garmin training devices or my power meter by USB it is recognized very quickly as a device in finder. any ideas? i understand this may be one of the problems fixed with SnowLeopard. thanks.

I am not sure what you are attempting to do. I assume that you are not trying to connect two computers to the same external drive at the same time. That will definitely be problematic. In order to effectively use Time Machine with two Macs, you should partition the drive into two partitions. Also make sure that the drive is using a GUID partition scheme.

  • My external hard drive connected to my time capsule does not appear in Finder

My Mac formatted external hdd doesn't appear in the TC folder in finder. It did once, but every time i shut down the computer or don't use it for a long time, it dissapears and only appears again if i disconnect it, connect it back again and try this 4-5 times. I do have the latest software updates on both computer and TC so that's not the problem. The hdd has it's own power supply aswell.
I know this is a somewhat common problem for airport extreme users, but so far no one has given me an answer good enough so the problem still exists.

    Well, let's see...
I've updated the software on the TS
I formated the ext hdd to mac os x and then copied all my stuff back again.
I've tried to disconnect it and reconnect it.
I've tried to use the ext both WITH the power supply and WITHOUT it. In both cases the hdd starts up as I connect it to the TS, the blue light is turned on (on the hdd) and you hear the drive spinning, but it has a really hard time showing up in finder.
Whenever I connect the ext hdd to my computer it always appears, so it's clearly no problem with the hardware.
Unfortunately I don't know any one else who has a TS och Airextreme, otherwise I would've tried it on their.
Sometimes it just appears in finder as it should after some reconnecting, but I have no clue when or why.

  • HT5287 Tried all those suggestions and remote disk does not appear in finder

Tried all the suggsetions and still cannot see the remote disk in the finder window.

As noondaywitch says, "Ah! A remote optical drive, not a HD."
You need to download and install "Secrets"
    <http://macupdate.com/app/mac/27025/secrets>
It is a System Preferences addition and it will let you set thousands of under the table settings, including making your Macbook Pro beleive it should look for a networked CD/DVD drive, just like the Macbook Air.
WARNING:  If you go crazy setting lots of extra stuff via Secrets, take careful notes so you can undo any damage you do, as it is unlikely anyone is going to guess you made changes via "Secrets"
Once you have installed Secrets, go to System Preferences -> Secrets -> Finder and set
    Show remote disks 1 [X]
    Show remote disks 2 [X]
You may need to restart the Finder before they take effect.  Apple Menu -> Force Quit -> Finder -> Relaunch
As I am NOT in your situation, I cannot test this in advance, so please let us know if it works as suggested.
If that does not work, I did a Google search for "enable mac os x remote dvd" and came up with some alternate ways to enable this feature.

  • Windows shares - content not appearing in Finder, potential workaround

After upgrading to Lion I'm having problems seeing shared Windows drives.
    - Connecting as normal (apple - K) mounts the root directory as expected.
    - I can navigate to a child directory, but can't see the contents of that child directory in the Finder
    - However, I can see it if I navigate to it via the Terminal...
In addition, if I navigate to the child directory via the Terminal and issue "open ." a Finder window opens revealing the files. I can then go 'up' a directory to the parent and see the full listing that was not being shown before!
Obviously this is some sort of bug? I am alone in experiencing this?

Well I have no issue with seeing Windows shares on Win 2008 cluster servers and my wifes XP SP3 Dell. Lion does seem to take longer than SL in showing the content of some folders when first opening, but I would say that once the index for the content is complete then there is no delay from then on.

  • My iPhone does not appear in the sharing drop down

I downloaded the Mavericks yesterday and I try to use the new map feature. Unfortunately, when I want to share the map with the directions my iPhone 5 doesn't appear in the drop down menu. I'm using the latest software for my iPhone. Does anyone has a clue or advise?

Restart didn't fix my problem, I knew I had these devices in the dropdown lists on other devices but not my macbook.
I looked into System Preferences at the iClooud account information - it was my .me address instead of my .mac  Not knowing whether this was the misalignment I signed out of the .me iCloud account (there's a lot of messages about losing contacts on the machine, iCloud docs on the machine, etc - but all seemed to be there when I logged back in). I logged back into my .mac username and the registered devices where now available.
