Vista shutdown/system restore problem

My wife has an A135-4427 laptop that will not completely shutdown. The shutdown will log off any users and display the screen that says "Shutting Down", but doesn't turn of the system. We have to hold down the power button to completely turn off the system. Doing a restart will shutdown to the same point, but never restart. Again we have to manually turn off the system and then power up to restart. Tried executing shutdown.exe from the command line and got the same results. Also tried resetting the Start Menu shutdown from sleep to shutdown and that didn't have any effect either. This was just an inconvenience until recently when she started having issues with some of our secure web accounts.
I attempted to do a system restore to an earlier restore point to see if that would correct her problem. System Restore completes, but, when it attempts to restart the system, the shutdown hangs as described above. When I turn off and restart the system manually, the system comes up, but a screen appears indicating an unexplained error occurred with System Restore and the system was returned to it's previous settings. Any help would be appreciated.

  • System Restore problem on Satellite C660-115

    Hello everyone,
The Satellite C660-115 my niece has a problem and I would like to make it serviceable for his Christmas.
Turning on the computer's voltage giving as final result the message: * Can not find the operating system will ", so I tried System Restore by first pressing the 0 key, and after many tests, changing the order of the boot and the other (with F2 or F12) ... But there was nothing.
From there, I realized that I could not go further without original recovery DVD from Toshiba. So I ordered last Saturday and got today Thursday. After as indicated by Toshiba (boot sequence beginning on CD drive), the system begins to upload (Windows is loading files ...) and then propose, on a nice table, the available languages, and choose .. .dropoff window
If, until then, everything seemed to unfold as it should, that's that clicking the "next" button to validate my choice of language an error message appears in a dialog box named RecoGUI:
ERROR:. IOCTL_GET_DISK_LENGTH _INFO \\ \ PHYSICALDRIVE0 The device is not ready.
When I press OK, then it is in French:
The hard disk # 0 is not available or incorrect RAID configuration!
I still presses OK (I do not have much choice) and then present the following window restoration that requires me to validate the language of the operating system to install ... French (Windows Win 7)
and states: The current size of restoration is to: Expert Mode
Again, I click OK and a warning box warns me that: All hard drives will be completely erased. Would you like to continue?
OK ... and cmd prompt appears that says (in short)
Checking for Drive V: V Drive not mounted ...
    Ckecking for Drive C: ... C: unmounted!
ending with: ERROR Copying of Recovery Base files failed!
    Press any key to continue (if I do, I find the Toshiba screen, and another cmd prompt that says so;
Waiting for ODD To Become available ...
    ODD Drive D: ready.
Check for medium in Drive D; ...
    Continue ...
    Drvload: Successfully loaded X: \ Windows \ inf \ battery.inf.
No RAID - Normally continues ...
    Installation in progress ...
Press any key to continue ... which, if I do, then placed below:
    X: \ Windows \ system32>
That's where I stayed, because I always come back to the same.
Could someone be kind enough to help me solve this problem?
A big thank you in advance ...

From my point of few we should consider two possible issues.
    1) faulty image on the new recovery disk
    2) problem with HDD as well as the partitions
In my opinion you should check the HDD firstly.
You can run some tests, for example you could try to install the Windows system using a clean Microsoft Windows CD (image)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit image can be downloaded here:
    http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msvista/pub/X15-65733/X15-65733.iso
But of course, you will not be able to activate this system without a valid serial key
So you can use this image just for testing purposes.
In case the image installation would run flawlessly, your recovery installation problem might be related to the faulty recovery media.
In such case you should try to contact the recovery media provider in order to get another, new good working media.

  • HELP please! X61 Vista operation system restore

I bought an x61 notebook with Vista Home Basic operating system last August. I replaced the original operation system with XP, and it was working fine for a year. But I reinstall the XP operating system today, but all USB hubs don’t work, as well as internet, dock station. I think I already install the appropriate drivers. They are all the same drivers I used last year. What should I do? I still have a hidden restore partition on my computer. Is there any way to get my Vista operation system back? Thanks a lot!!

    Hi yimeiwang,
Updating Win XP to SP3 might resolve USB hubs issue. Further, installing lenovo drivers is a two step process namely extraction of the file to a location the first setup file chooses [by default typically C:\Drivers\..] and secondly going to that location and running the actual driver's setup. An year is a long time to forget this.
    Hope it helps.

  • System restore problems

This morning .. . .went to computer woke it up fine
then error messages in the bottom left hand corner saying that this file and that file were corrupted - this was the yellow trianage message.
Then that the "all users file" in documents and settings was corrupt.
So did a system restore to one day last week - when i knew all was well. This was successful but when the thing started again lots of software files were missing, internet dial up connection, and the all programs menu was one fifth the size it was before - lots of things gone like under:
    all programs
    accessories
    system tools - gone
I then tried to reserve the system restore and this did not work - reported that it had failed. So tried to do a system restore as I left to yesterday. Otherwise what do i do?
The file with all your software is still on there but it's reinstalling the dial up connection etc.
    All advice appreciated

    Hi
As far as I know the system restore tool roll back the OS to the early point and all the files.
If you have installed files or have changed some settings after the restore point, all this things will be removed after using the system restore tool.
A similar issue was happened to me. I have saved a lot of files on second partition and after using the system restore tool all these files and data which was created after restore point was removed.
    There is nothing to do
If you use the tool from time to time you should create more restore points.

  • System Restore Problem - Time Machine

    Hello,
I erased my hard drive (after backing everything up, of course) to try to fix some problems I was having with general functionality. When I tried restoring my hard drive from Time Machine I was prompted with two backups to restore from. One was about 90GB and the other was about 60GB. So, naturally I chose the larger of the two.
The problem is that I think the backup was from October 2008 when I actually started backing up far before that (September 2007). Assuming I am correct, does this mean that I have lost everything from before October 2008? For example, since I have a small hard drive (110GB), and I have a lot of files (photos, videos, songs, etc.), I have to continuously backup, then delete files that I don't necessarily need on my internal hard drive. So, if I ever need to go back and restore them, I usually can with Time Machine.
But, since this recent recovery of my entire hard drive, I feel I have lost all the information prior to that October 2008 backup. Or does it mean that anything after October 2008 I lost? Does this make sense? I am still having a hard time understanding what it means to restore databases from a specific time.
Any advice would be most helpful!
    Thank you!

Was this before or after the hardware repair mentioned in your other post?

Do NOT depend on this. Time Machine is NOT like most "archival" backup systems. If you delete a file from your internal HD, TM will, eventually, delete it's copy. Depending on the circumstances, that may be in as little as 25 hours, or it may be months later.
One of TM's big advantages is, it will manage both it's space and backups for you, automatically. But that means, if you want to remove old files from your internal and archive them, you need to do it another way.
But, since this recent recovery of my entire hard drive, I feel I have lost all the information prior to that October 2008 backup. Or does it mean that anything after October 2008 I lost? Does this make sense? I am still having a hard time understanding what it means to restore databases from a specific time.
Again, TM is a bit different from other backup systems. If you restored from the most recent backup of your current set of backups (not one of the previous backup sets in your other post), then you should have everything.
For your current set of backups, assume you have the following:
    Full backup as of Monday
    Incremental backup as of Tuesday
    Incremental backup as of Wednesday
If you restore from Wednesday's backup, you get everything: Monday's full backup, plus Tuesday's changes, plus Wednesday's changes.
If you restore from Tuesday's backup, you get Monday's full backup plus Tuesday's changes.

  • System Restore Problem

    Dear All:
The system is CRM5.0 Unicode based on JAVA+ABAP stack. When we get
the backup files, it contains DB files (SQL Server detach files)
and whole copy of \usr\sap\<SID> folder (including DVEBMGS51,
SCS50, SYS). And we also get the info that the source system is
    Windows + MSSQL.
We tried to use Homogeneous system copy method to restore. The DB can
    successfully attached.
We tried to select: Target System -> System Copy-> Java + ABAP
but we don't have the Java Export file.
We tried to select: Target System -> System Copy-> ABAP,
    in step: CreateStdSchema, report error.
Here we are wondering if we still have chance to restore the system
with those files, maybe partial is OK, such as only ABAP part.
You help or any info will be highly appreciated!
    Thanks a lot!
    Best Regards,
    D.H

You can restore the DB files if you have a full offline/online (+transaction logs) backup of the DB...
Can you provide detailed info on how the backup was taken?...
    Regards

  • Does windows' system restore take a snapshot of FF and am i able to role back to my old bookmarks that way?

does windows vista's system restore take a snapshot of FF that will allow me to role back to my old bookmarks?
    thank you

i created a JSON file before the FF move. JSON files i tried to restore bookmarks from were from dates while i had the folder, yet they did not help it appear in any bookmarks menu or on any taskbar.
six months of bookmarks were in three folders put to a FF taskbar, two folders made it... one named bookmarks did not. it might be a flaw within firefox.

  • How do I restore System Restore?

How do I restore System Restore? I am running Firefox 17.0 on Windows XP SP3.

The pop-up asking if I wanted to upgrade to FF 17.0 had a link to a warning that it might disable System Restore. I clicked “No” for the update not wanting to lose System Restore but 17.0 somehow loaded anyway. Since Mozilla techs knew that 17.0 could cause System Restore problems, I am hoping they will know how to fix them.

  • Will a System Restore cause me to loose edits

I've edited a lot of my landscape photos in lightroom and I'm having computer issues.
The tech wants me to do a system restore and I'm worried I'll loose all my edits.
Is there anyway to prevent loosing the edits for when I re install lightroom?
    Other advice?

This will not happen. A system restore does not affect your data, whether it is Lightroom or some other program (Word, Excel).
Now just to be 100% clear, if the tech want to wipe your hard drive and reinstall your operating system, that's different ... you don't want to do that without first making backups of all of your data.
Which brings up the question ... do you have backups of all of your photos and your catalog file? Sounds like you don't, otherwise you wouldn't be worried right now. In my opinion, making these backups on a regular and automated basis is MANDATORY, and you need to begin doing this, as soon as this system restore problem is resolved, and no excuses.

  • Firefox keeps closing shortly after opening. I'm running on Vista, did a system restore, still having problems. HOW DO I FIX THIS?

I thought it was caused by updating Java, but system restore to before that point hasn't fixed anything. It even crashes when I'm on Mozilla's site looking for solutions!

  • Firefox not starting after update to 3.6.11 from 3.6.10 on vista platform. XUL error report. Uninstall including removing mozilla items in regedit or system restore does not resolve issue. XUL error still reappears after reinstall ? in English

Problem exists on my HP C0mpaq 6720s , Vista operating system.
System restore, restored to version 3.6.3 instead of 3.6.10 . This did not start either. Previously, I used Revo Uninstaller Pro to remove all Mozilla items, checked regedit and removed all Mozilla folders, then reinstalled 3.6.11 from your website. Mozilla would not start and XUL error stated 1.9.2.10 followed by min 1.9.2.11 and max 1.9.2.11 . This was the same error report that appeared after the automatic update.
So I am at a loss and without Mozilla .

I have successfully resolved this issue on my PC by allowing updater.exe through the firewall. This updater.exe is located in the folder where your Mozilla Firefox was installed. The default folder is "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\updater.exe"
    Happy Browsing.....

  • Firefox 4 could not be made to show bookmarks on Vista 64bit. I used system restore to get back to older version. Now Firefox won't open at all even after undoing system restore

I use Vista 64 bit. Was fine with older Version of Firefox (3.6, I believe). Upgraded to Ver. 4. Couldn't access extensive bookmarks file or bookmarks toolbar. Tried all the Firefox help recs and they didn't work. Clicking the top button would give list of toolbars but when I tried to move to bookmarks toolbar the menu changed. Tried going thru tools and options and that didn't work. So decided to use System Restore to get old Firefox version back. Icons remained but program wouldn't open. Tried many ways, including start menu. Old version is still on program control file but only option is to uninstall. So went back to System Restore to get Vers. 4 back and it's not there. What to do?? I can use Google Chrome or Internet Explorer but I want all my 100's of bookmarks back. Thank you.

  • Error code 0x800700B7 with System Restore and Backup problems

My OS is Vista Ultimate. 2GB RAM. 13GB free space on C Drive. I am unable to use System Restore or Backup and Restore center. When I try to create a Restore Point (or do a backup) error message comes up 'Could not create the scheduled task for the following reason: Cannot create a file when that file already exists. (0x800700B7).' I think (not sure) that these problems came after I was infected with win32:Vitro virus. (No longer any infections showing). I think that my registry may be corrupt or files deleted. Can anyone help please?

    Hi,
    Thank you for your post.
Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following:
Note: Please perform a complete system backup first. If any unexpected issue occurs, we can quickly restore the system to the current status.
    1.     Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    2.     In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache
    3.     Right click on this key and select "Export" and save the key to a Flash Drive or other removable storage device.
    4.     Remove the key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft\Windows”
    5.     Please reboot the computer and check if the issue reoccurs. If it works, please also reconfigure the Scheduled Task for System restore in Task Scheduler.
    Hope this helps. Thanks.

  • System Restore will not run on Vista Home Premium

I cannot get system restore to run  on my T61 using Vista Home Premium I get messages like:
"The Restore point could not be created for the following reason: The writer experienced a transient error. If the backup process is retried the error may not reoccur". It did.
I also get "Rescue and Recovery Backup Service stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the applicaion to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available." It did not.
I have also been advised no restore points are available.
The net effect is I cannot use System Restore at all!
Has anyone else had a problem like this with system restore?  Lenovo has been no help.I have had a number of Dell computers and this is my first (and last) Lenovo. When it was quite new and the problem occurred , I contacted them but they just blew me off..
    RHM

So i assume that your T61 originally came with Vista Home premium installed??? Did you make the Recovery Media disks when you first got your machine??? If not call Lenovo up and obtain those disks, and then use them to reinstall your service partition and your OS.

I finally did the task manager again and downloaded the update to 10.5.3 and this seemed to resolve the problem for awhile but now it is back! Is anybody else experiencing this problem? and where you able to correct it? I'm running Windows 7 64 bit have never had a problem with anything till now. I ran scans of my machine no viruses.

    Hi,
i have exactely the same problem.
After the update to v10.5.3 iTunes isn't shutting down anymore. I have this error on various Windows versions (XP SP3, Win7 x86, Win7 x64.
On my private Notebook v10.5.2.11 still works! I won't update iTunes there - not even for a test .
