Vista Update / Rescue & Recovery Fail

Last year (March 2008), I purchased Lenovo 3000 N200 series laptop (Model: 0769-BWG or TY2BWUK), with Window Vista Home Premium.
Last week, while Window Vista was autoupdating my laptop, it fail to update it. While shutting down it was reverting back changes. I try to let it finish auto-update procedure, but it fail to recover. Finally after waiting for 2 hours, I power off the laptop and try to restart it. To my surpise, it could not load Vista. By using advance boot sequence, i tried to load vista in safe mode (which failed), then I tried to load it using safe mode with DOS command prompt logging... It was stopping at windows/system32/crcdisk.sys, after that it could not progress it. I could not able to load vista... Finally, i tried using repair options available in advance boot sequence (which tried to look at bad sectors in hard disk). It could not find any problem with hard disk.
Finally to go back to original factory condition, I press on Lenovo care button (Priviously I could able to copy my personal file to my external hard disk using dos commond). I tried option, Rescue & Recovery>Full Factory Restore. Again, it did not proceed... It starts the process, clears agreement page, and then ask for Click next to proceed... then it goes ----------- BLANK----------- NO progress on bar... Last message says 'Preparing Hard disk for recover...'. While checking boot log through advance boot sequence>safe mode with dos prompt, it is stopping at disk.sys
Now, I am not getting vista boot options from my C: also.
Is there anyone encouter such problem? I could not see any options available now... otherthen contacting Lenovo support now. Any input will be highly appriciated... Thanks.

guys, there is a new release 4.21, are you talking about it?
god bless ya all, lenovo servers and us. 200mb is a bit high to download 5 times

  • Can you install Windows 7, then revert to a backup image of Vista with Rescue & Recovery?

I have a copy of 7 I want to put on my T61.  I've partitioned the OS into one partion, and the files into another.
I've made backup copies of the OS with Rescue & Recovery already, so can I install Windows 7 over Vista, then if I find I don't want to stick with it, recover back to Vista?
    T61 15.4" T9300 (2.5GHz 6MB L2) Windows 7 Professional x64 4GB Memory, NVidia Quadro NVS 140M

When you get to BOOTCAMP, that has to be changed from FAT to NTFS but you have to click Advanced Option.... button in order to change to NTFS.
The GPT error message can happen if you have more than one internal hard drive (say SSD and TB model).
If you didn't use Assistant, and some have managed, undo the partition.
Paragon CampTune $19 can also assist with installing Windows, creating the partition - but may not work with Lion, though you aren't there yet.

  • Resolving Errors 8000FFFF & 643 when Vista updates fail

I realized I had certain updates coming in from Microsoft for my Vista Premium that consistently failed. I made note of the error codes and called Toshiba tech support but might as well have saved that protracted time because they sent me to my virus protection provider who found nothing wrong with their settings. From there I am sent to Microsoft who isn't willing to offer support without a fee because my version of Vista came preloaded with the laptop and they suggest going back to the manufacturer so back to Toshiba tech support I trot, again to no avail.
Seems the update was Vista SP2 and 4 security updates that were jamming things up and Toshiba tech support does not have the "information" on this level of Vista so I was just advised to forgo the download. I did not feel comfortable with this because it looke as if nothing else was going to successfully download until that was resolved so I went in search for resolution. I did, indeed, fix this myself so am going to share it here. The tech told me they had encountered this same issue with other Toshiba users recently and just didn't have an answer. Well, I do for any of you interested, and it is:
Click "Start" and type "regedit" in the Start Search box. In the Registry find the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/COMPONANTS" subkey. Under "COMPONANTS" first look for "PendingXmidentifier", right-click on it and "delete". Next, look for "NextQueueEntryIndex", right-click and "delete". Lastly, look to see if you have "AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving" in the list and "delete" it as well. You may or may not have all three of these componants so just delete the ones you have. This resolves Error Codes 8000FFF and 643.
    Hope tech support reads this.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thank you for the contribution.

  • Rescue & Recovery Backup Failing on T60

Hi all -- I'd appreciate any help on the following problem:
I've been performing regular backups of my T60 to an external HDD via USB for about a year now. I've been using Rescue & Recovery version 3.10.0022.00. Everything's been fine until a couple of weeks ago when after about 20 minutes into the backup, a message popped up that said "Backup did not complete sucessfully."
The R&R help files are worthless in terms of any sort of troubleshooting information.
I have 99 GB of space left on the external drive (at least according to R&R), and the HDD that I'm backing up has signficantly less data than 99 GB so I don't think space is a problem. (Curiously, before I ran the first backup that failed, R&R said I had about 110 or 120 GB free, and only after failing the first time and subsequent times did it say I only had 99 GB free).
I've read of people solving some of their R&R problems by reinstalling, but I'm afraid that the newly installed software won't recognize the backups already taken, and I'll be forced to delete them. I don't want to do this for several reasons.
    Can anyone help?
    Many thanks.

    Hi, eacuni.
I have no solution to this but am sharing your experience.
I am running Windows XP on a T60 FDG1951. Ever since I installed XP Service Pack 3 Rescue and Recovery has not been working properly while before that time I never had problems creating backups. Since installing SP3, Rescue and Recovery aborts backing up 100% of the time, showi ng an error message that simply states either that creating the backup was unsuccessful or - even more simply - that it was aborted. No explanation offered.
Uninstalling Rescue and Recovery and newly installing the most recent version (4.21.0016.00), as the IBM/lenovo helpdesk suggested, didn't help any, either. Nor can it be a problem of a lack of space on my hard drive: I'm creating (trying to create, that is) my backups on an external USB drive with a lush 220 GB free.
So can anyone of you out there please help poor eacuni and me?
    Thanks!
    Thomas

  • Restoration of Lenovo T500 to new hard drive using Rescue & Recovery

I bought a new hard drive and I have been having a frustrating time trying to migrate the image of my hard disk to the new drive. When I bought my T500, it came with Windows Vista Business 64, but I have since downgraded it to Windows XP Pro.
Up to now, I was faithfully using Norton Ghost 14 to back up my drive to my USB Western Digital MyBook Mirror Edition 1TB drive. However, I get errors when I try to restore the image to my new drive (and I will be posting that issue to Norton's forum).
While I have not completely given up on Norton Ghost, I decided I might be able to restore the image using the Rescue & Recovery software. I downloaded and installed R&R 4.21.0016.00. After I installed it, I backed up my system to the MyBook Mirror Edition.
I then shut down the computer and put in the new hard drive (a Western Digital Scorpio Black WD5000BEKT). I used a disc that I burned from the ThinkVantage Create Recovery Media utility to boot the machine. While the environment loads just fine, it does not detect my USB hard drive. NOTE: I didn't make my USB drive bootable, I only stored the backup files there.
I tried going into the PC Doctor utility and discovered that there is an "unidentified" USB device under the mouse section, which I presume is the MyBook.
I have hunted high and low for an answer to this both on Lenovo and Western Digital's web sites, but I can't seem to come up with a reason why my drive is not visible to R&R, or a way to load the WD drivers into this recovery environment. I found http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Rescue-and-Recovery-does-not-recognize-USB-driv..., and I followed the instructions - there is a minus sign next to the USB boot device in the bios. However, saving the bios and rebooting the computer (as the post suggested) does nothing to change that setting.
I have tried upgrading the bios to the latest version, but still no luck detecting the USB drive.
I am thinking about resorting to buring a backup of my entire system to DVDs and then restoring using the DVD drive. However, since my current backup is 60GB, I imagine that will take 15 discs.
Whether that fixes my immediate problem or not (that is, transferring to my new drive), I still don't have an answer for a long term solution in case of hard drive failure. Ghost is not working with my current configuration. And if I use R&R for backup, it will do me no good if I cannot get it to connect to my USB drive to recover. Furthermore, as far as I can tell there is no way to burn an existing restoration point to DVD - meaning I would have absolutely no way to restore if my hard drive failed.
I have been working on this migration for 3 full days already, and since I had my system images backed up I thought that this would be a trivial task. Any suggestions at this point would be welcomed.

I'm experiencing the same problem. I wanted to restore single files from an USB disk. Two larger file (500MB each) went through that process quite fast (3 minutes). A folder with many small files takes forever.
What's strange is that my notebook hard drive is at 100% activity all the time, while the USB disk is hardly read.

  • Vista DVD and Recovery CD's

My father (aged in his 70's) has just purchased a Lenovo 3000 series desktop.  It seems a good machine but it was supplied with no Vista DVD.  I tried to create a Recovery disc for him, but when you follow the customer care help it tells you to go to a particular menu screen and select the Create Rescue & Recovery Disc option, however this menu option is not there and there is nothing that sounds like it will do this task in any of the sub-menu's.  So, the first questions is how do we create a recovery disc for the computer?
Secondly, I'm concerned about the absence of a Vista DVD.  What if, for example, his hard drive dies after the computer is out of warranty and he has to buy a new one?  How does he install his licensed copy of Vista on the replacement hard drive if he doesn't have the DVD?  I don't understand how you can purchase a license and not receive a copy of the software that goes with it.

There is no LenovoCare menu but there is a LenovoCare Tools option in the Welcome Centre.  Under that menu there is no option for "Create Recovery Media".  Under LenovoCare Tools there is a Data Protection and Recovery option, and under that there is a Rescue and Recovery option.  However even within the Rescue and Recovery option I can't find any option to create recovery media.  It has 3 sub-menus:  "Back up your system", "Restore your system", and "Manage settings".  None of these has any sub option to create recovery media.
I have all the screenshots but I cannot figure out how to display them here.
My other concern is that the PC was supplied without a Windows Vista disk.  I cannot see how to create a Windows Vista CD/DVD from the system, so my dad has a licensed copy of loaded but no actual copy of the installation disk.  How do we do this?  If the hard drive fails after the warranty period, how would my dad install Vista on his new HDD?

  • Satellite A200 - can't use Vista after Product Recovery

Hello. I hope someone can help me with the following... This week I've had various issues with my laptop following a Vista update that System Restore did not fix, so I decided to go for a full Product Recovery (as I have a full backup of all my files).
So far I have used product recovery on my laptop in each of the 3 ways I can see (and more than once): without changing settings, changing settings and maximising the partition, changing settings and selecting the advance / expert option.
Each time I was able to complete the initialisation of windows, creating a new user account, etc. Once the desktop has been set up, I get a small window with a progress bar and when this completes I click the 'restart' button...
After restarting I get to the black screen that says Microsoft Corporation with the green progress bar, but it stays there for what feels like 'too long'. After a while I get a black screen with a cursor and then a blue screen for a crash dump.
If I use F8 and start in Safe Mode, the system stops at the CplIR.sys file, although hard disk activity seems to continue. After 10+ minutes I switch off.
If I use F8 and then select Repair Computer... this is what happens with each option
    - Restore the complete windows operating system: after clicking OK nothing happens.
    - Memory diagnostics: there are no problems with the memory
    - DOS prompt: I have run CHKDSK and there are no problems with the hard drive
    - Startup Repair: there are no errors, although the diagnostics say 'failed' when it sees there are no system restore points
Then on restarting I either get the black screen with cursor followed by the crash dump OR if I manage to sign in and get to my desktop, I get the crash dump as soon as I try to do something (like open the control panel).
Following instructions found elsewhere, I've tried this after removing the battery and then changing the power management options immediately after windows initialisation (ie. before clicking the restart button). No change.
I've even ignored the restart button! But still get a crash dump when I try to do something.
Any ideas?? I have spent (ie. wasted) so much time on this and don't understand what can be wrong after formatting the drive and re-loading windows image...

    Hello
It is very interesting story. I have recovered several notebooks many times but I have never noticed something like this.
I must say that all you have done right and you think in right way. If I were you I would try exactly the same steps to get it work somehow.
I don't know which various issues you had before but I presume there issues were just software issues and not relevant for hardware functionality.
It is really hard to say what the problem can be. What you can try is obtain somewhere Microsoft Vista installations disc and install naked Vista to see if the same will happen again.
Anyway, the fact is that recovery images are tested and adapted for each notebook model and if the hardware is OK there is no reason for such behaviour.
Try with clean installation using Microsoft installations disc and let us know what happen exactly.

  • Is the Vista ThinkVantage rescue disc bootable?

I was reading the "downgrade to XP Pro" document from Lenovo (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-68317).  I just wonder whether the Vista rescue/recovery CD/DVD created from this process is  bootable?  I will be bringing my X61 oversea and would need a set of discs in the cases where the harddrive fail (or when I do a harddrive upgrade).

yes it is bootable.... you could even put in a brandnew harddrive and using these discs you could create restore your computer to factory default condition.... handy if your harddrive broke down for some reason...

  • Latest Vista updates freeze mouse on Bootcamp

The latest Vista updates on my Bootcamp partition cause my Apple wireless mouse to not function in Windows Vista (on the bootcamp partition).
Used it just fine for several years and it still works just fine on OSX Mountain Lion.
Tried the following options to remedy:
    - renew the bluetooth pairing on OSX, then restart Windows
    - start Windows in safe mode: this works fine, cause mouse is working fine
However, this does not help, as bluetooth mouse does not work (move) in Vista normal mode.
Anybody any suggestion how to get my mouse working again on bootcamp Vista ?

First of all, thanks very much for trying to help !!

  • Recovery Media Vs Rescue & Recovery

Hi I,m just enterend in the thinkpad world buyng a brand new  edge 15'' 319 - 49G
I would like to understand what's the difference from the Recovery Media and Rescue & Recovery.
I've just lunched Recovery Media and it produced 4 dvd disks: is it a disk set to resume the original factory installation?
then I lunched the Rescue & Recovery and it produced a "backup" on the internal drive (but where?): do it is good to resume the actual sytem and applications situation?
    Am I right?
or I've understand it wrong and Recovery Media Vs Rescue & Recovery does the same thing?

If you are running RNR 4.5, read my post from Nov 22,2011, incremental backups revert to local.(you will have to update a entry in windows task scheduler).
You need to develop a Disaster recovery plan.  In my case, I have a  second HDD (internal). I back up to it every Sunday,
and every 3 months I backup to cd/DVD in case second HDD goes up in smoke.   I have no backups on my C drive(local).
If you have an external HDD, via USB, you can use that as your backup storage area. I would delete the backup on C,
change backup location to USB, then start backing up.  First backup is a FULL  C drive, the next ones are just incremental backups. Set max incrementals to 32.  There are problems with the MERGE process(fail code=584, not enough space for the merge...bug in rnr).
On advanced menu, look on top tabs for Advanced . It allows you to copy Local backups to an external device.
Unless you really love your current backup, dont waste time copying.  Just start it all on the USB.

  • X201 rescue & recovery problem

    Hello,
my X201 (model 3626 HMG) is running Windows 7 pro 32 bits French version.
    BIOS and system updated recently.
After having changed my external hard disk, rescue & recovery (v4.3) didn't work : creation of the back-up space was still not completed after 2 hours. (the new disk is a 1 Tbyte Iomega Prestige Compact, NTFS formatted). I had to abort.
Then I tried to upgrade to v4.31. Installation failed:
(an error occurred, returned error code = 6)
So, according to recommendations in the txt file, I uninstalled the previous version and tried to re-install: same error.
Then I tried to re-install tvtvrnr43_1027en.exe in English and French versions. An other error occurred:
(The existing R&R environment is newer than this version of R&R, please install a newer version)
I tried again with the newer version, error code number 6 occurred again.
Is there any solution to re-install R&R and have it working?
    Thanks for help

Okay folks. Thanks for help :-(

  • Rescue & Recovery lists no backups on Iomega USB eGO disk

    Hi,
I have been using an Iomega eGO external USB drive for backups.
I have been able to list and remove backups (when required) when in Windows 7 and running Rescue & Recovery, but I am unable to get a list of backups when booting from a Recovery DVD into Rescue & Recovery.
Basically I am replacing the unencrypted hard drive with an SSD that supports encryption.
The aim was to use a full backup made immediately prior to removing the HDD to restore the full system.
When booting from the recovery DVD, the Rescue & Recovery utility doesn't list any backups, even when the tick box for listing backups for other systems is checked.
It makes no difference whether selecting ALL locations or External USB Drive.
    Any ideas?
Backups aren't much good if you can't retrieve them.
If my old disk had failed then I'd be in a worse state than this. I can't say that I'm impressed.

    Hello and welcome,
Has R&R been updated since you made your bootable DVD?  It's possible there's a version mismatch between your backups and your R&R DVD.
You might try burning a new rescue CD - or whatever it's called on your machine, "bootable media" maybe.  That may be able to find your backups.
