VISTA & WIRELESS : HOW TO SOLVE LOCAL ACCESS ONLY?

Thank you for your reading and possible answer(s),
UNABLE TO GET "LOCAL AND INTERNET ACCESS" UNDER VISTA, WHILE IT WAS POSSIBLE UNDER XP
I used to get connected "home-like" with XP to a "secondary wireless router" (SSID: Wlancomtrend - no authentication needed, no work group, signal strength: Excellent), which gets the internet signal from a "main wireless router", plugged to the DSL line (SSID: Wireless - no authenticatin needed, no work group, signal strength: Good / Low).
I am not the administrator of these routers. I used to get DNS automatically under TCPIP properties.
VISTA DOESN'T LET ME ACCESS THE INTERNET, THOUGH I MANAGE TO CONNECT TO THE SAME ROUTER
It says: "Access: local only"; and under Network and sharing center it says "unidentified network". I gess I'm a bit unfamiliar with this OS and do not master all its settings. I also marked off security essentials like Firewall under Windows security center, to prevent any possible internet access blocking. My laptop power plan is also set to "High performance".
- I suspect my ID network is not well configured. Under System properties (right click on the "My computer icon") > Computer name > network ID > Join a Domain or Workgroup: I'm trying to keep the "This is a home computer" setting, but it goes back to "This computer is part of a business network" all the time, even after reboot. How to fix this, by the way?
- Under Network and Sharing center > Customize the current connection > location type > i set it to "public".
Other factors maybe irrelevant: / Sharing discovery > Network discovery: "On" / > file sharing: "On".
I get DNS automatically under TCPIP properties (as with XP).
A couple of days ago, VISTA managed to get internet with the "main wireless router" (SSID: Wireless - no authentication needed, signal strength: Good / Low). I just tried to set ID network to "This is a home computer" and rebooted. Under the network window, I also tried to tick a network location or workgroup. This may not be important, though.
I STILL JUST GET LOCAL ACCESS ONLY WITH MY WIRELESS CONNECTION UNDER VISTA
Any help? Molta mercé / Many thanks
Also tried:
- Automatically Detect Settings checked in internet options
- Obtain an IP address automatically under TCPIP properties
- Enable DHCP
- Disable User Account Control in Security Center
- Disable most of the Vista security stuff
- Remove and set up all connections
- IPv6 off
- etc.

Well, I have been thoroughly frustrated by this networking problem in Vista.  What is so INSIDIOUS about it, is that it can happen spontaneously/periodically.  When it first started happening, I could go for hours with
no problems.  And then all of the sudden, it's "LOCAL ACCESS ONLY."   I'd even lose my Internet connection completely, but then it would come back momentarily.  Lately though, the problem got worse.  It would happen every 5-10 minutes.
What really drove me nuts originally is that I had set up a new wireless router: a TP-Link TL-WR941N.  Very nice and powerful.  It can reach up 3 stories in a multi-story home.  I have my computer up on the 3rd floor.  My Internet
connection was no problem... for MONTHS.  And then, all of the sudden, this "LOCAL ACCESS ONLY" problem started cropping up.  My network connection would change to this, then after a few moments, go back to "LOCAL AND INTERNET".
I figured it was some kind of "momentary atmospheric problem".  But no.  It continued on, for days and days after it had started.  Why?  Why would this start happening when nothing else had changed?
Ah, but that's where I was amiss.  You see, Vista gets updated frequently by the powers that be at Microsoft.  And who knows what things they really do?  You don't get a full report.  You just keep getting "important security updates".
Well, I suspect that at some point, they introduced some changes which affect the networking capability of Vista.  And so, since that point, you'll have periodic problems as I have.
Microsoft is so focused on Windows-7, that they really can't be bothered with Vista.  AND... I really wonder if they leave defects like this around to give incentive for people to upgrade to Windows-7.  I wouldn't put it past them.
Well, the main thing is that each person's situation is different.  Some people have 3rd party software that is tripping it up (like Norton or McAfee).  I think a lot of the problem depends upon the type of wireless router you're connected with
and the type of network (e.g. G vs. N).  So that's why some fixes proposed solve the problem while others do nothing.
If you try any settings changes, I strongly recommend that you do them one at a time.  Also, keep note of what you've applied.  It is important to be able to roll back those changes if need be.
So, this was the first friendly user tip that helped me:
Over the course of several days, I made only one change at a time, then waited to see if the failure occurred again.  I'm an IT networking professional so I based my decisions on my familiarity with network protocols, impact, risk, ease of
implementation and fallback positions.
These are the steps I took:
1.  Installed Teracopy, which takes over the file copying function of Windows.
http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php
2. Disabled IPv6 (Control Panel -> Network Connections -> <your connection> -> Properties)
3.  Disabled Link Layer Topology Discovery Mapper and Responder (Control Panel -> Network Connections -> <your connection> -> Properties)
4. Set Power settings to high performance (Control Panel -> Power Options) and disabled the screensaver (Control Panel -> Personalization -> Screen Saver)
5. Reduced my Linksys router's MTU to 1480 (although I doubt this was part of the solution)
6. Enabled ECN with the following command "netsh interface tcp set global ecncapability=enabled" from command line (Start -> cmd)
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb726965.aspx
Possibly step 6 is all you really need to do.  Please post if this works for you.
Well, I figured I'd give step #6 a shot.  Why not?  There are a few other command line settings recommended, but I decided to try it alone first:
netsh interface tcp set global ecncapability=enabled
At first, this seemed to be the only thing I needed to do.  My "LOCAL ACCESS ONLY" problem seemed to stop happening, observed over a 20 minute period.  It happened again for a moment, but then Internet Access returned right away.  I thought
the problem was solved... But then "LOCAL ACCESS ONLY" came back and stayed.  I had to run these commands as well:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
This WORKED!  I seem to sustain my Internet connection for much longer periods.  LOCAL ACCESS ONLY does pop up sometimes, but it is very brief.  I think it's something to do with my router going into "sleep mode" on the
connection.  If I try to make a connection to a website, it comes back to life and I have Internet Access again.
LASTLY...
There is one other thing I want to mention, in case someone else reading this has the same problem.
One day after a severe storm that caused a power outage, I started getting "LOCAL ACCESS ONLY."  The wireless router was there and I'd connect to it, but no Internet.  I connected directly to it, hardwired, and STILL had the same problem.  I
rebooted the router, the cable modem, you name it.  Same problem.  Being directly connected to the cable modem was fine.  Did my router get fried from a power surge during the storm?  It seemed perfectly fine in all other respects.  I
eventually contacted the TP-LINK customer support.  I learned something new...  the problem was with the IP ADDRESS of the router conflicting with the cable modem.
By default, your wireless router will take IP address 192.168.1.1.  In some cases, this will be a problem if the cable modem is taking the same IP address
and is finicky about the address of the wireless router.  It was fine for almost 6 months... why did it become a problem all of the sudden?  Bizarre.  Suspicion was that the ISP changed some things (they remotely reprogram
the modems from time to time, you know).  The solution?  Give the wireless router a different address (e.g. 192.168.2.1).  It worked!  I was able to get Internet access after that.  Worked fine for several months,
too...  until I started getting that periodic "LOCAL ACCESS ONLY" again.  But the solution above seems to have addressed it.
Good luck to those having problems.  I sure wish Microsoft would be more dedicated to its customer base.  But thankfully we've got forums like this which bring people together to help solve each others problems.  :-)

  • Windows 7 on Mac Pro, Local Access Only, No Internet

Installed Windows 7 on my 2.66 Quad Mac Pro. Whenever I boot, the network adapter icon in the traybar comes up with a yellow slash through it that says "Local Access Only" Looked into troubleshooting, turning off Network power management, turning off IP6, etc... No fixes. I can browse my local area network but not the internet.
When I boot in safe mode with networking, the error does not show on the network taskbar icon and I can browse the internet just fine.
Here's the temporary fix that I found works every time in standard boot mode.
    1. Assign a manual IP address to the network adapter. (192.168.1.160). (make sure the IP is in your DHCP Scheme and the IP is available (no other devices using that IP)
    2. It will automatically assign a subnet (255.255.255.0)
    3. Close the networking window.
    4. Right click on the network icon with the yellow through it in the task bar and click "Troubleshoot problems"
    5. It will come up quickly with a fix (saying you should not be using a manual IP). Click "Apply Fix" then windows 7 will put the computer back to DHCP Mode.
    6. Try it now. Everything should be working.
No permanent fix on this yet but when a new boot camp 3.1 network driver comes out, hopefully it should fix it. If anyone else has a permanent solution, it would be appreciated.

My thought - because the only issues I've had personally with Vista/7 have had to do with modems and routers, and went away once I upgraded those. Sometimes there are firmware updates to deal with new OS.
Your post didn't seem to mention wired/wireless or modem and router in place.
you might want to look for an Intel driver. Also, you must have had network to install and update Windows 7, look to rollback the network driver if possible, or uninstall + restart and let Windows reinstall a device driver.

  • E1500 router only local access from Vista laptop

I upgraded my old Linksys wrt54g to the E1500. All the XP os are connected  via cable and wireless connection, but the Vista laptop i get local access only connection error. This laptop used to connect on the older router using wep but with E1500 wpa-2 it cannot connect. I am unable to ping the router from the laptop wireless. Connecting ethernet cable it works fine and logging in as a guest works does too. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?

Disable the security on the router and Vista compter and try to connect with no security.   If successful go back and enable security and try again.

  • MiFi 5510L Problem  Local Internet Access only

Set up the new jetpack 5510L model and when trying to connect to the internet I get Local access only - will not get me online.  Any ideas?

First line of defense is the various resets:Level 1 - Power Cycle the device
Level 2 - Remove the SIM card while powered off
Level 3 - Restore the defaults from the button under the back cover
Give each of these a try and check your internet each time.  If the problem is temporary then this should clear it up for you.  Let us know if you need more help from here and we can try some other troubleshooting steps.  We'd have to know what OS your connecting device is running to provide you with specific steps.

  • Cannot change http listener to local access

Please can someone help me ?
I want to set xdb http listener to local access only, but it doesn't work !
I have a XE server running on a Windows System and another XE server running on VM-Ware with suse linux 9.2.
On Windows I do as follows:
    sqlplus / as sysdba
    exec dbms_xdb.setlistenerlocalaccess(true);
    If I check listener with
    lsnrctl status
    I see ... HOST=127.0.0.1 ...
    OK ! That's what I want.
If I do the same on Linux nothings changed. ...HOST=vmlinux... (as before)
The XE on this machine should only have local access.
    Any idea ? Thx

it should have worked too, and in fact, by default this is the way access works, you will only be allowed to locally connect to your XE instance. Now, you should be aware that this local access refers to the administrator's page (http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex) only, not the access through the listener.
If you want the lsnrctl status to show 127.0.0.1 instead of your hostname or actual ip address, you should configure the listener.ora file instead, and change the ip address or hostname by 127.0.0.1

  • Vista Ultimate: Local Network Access Only (Wired and Wireless)

Alright, I am not very experienced working with Windows Vista, and I'm having serious trouble solving this problem. I've been searching for solutions for two days and not found anything that works.
The computer is a Compaq Presario A900 running Windows Vista Ultimate (Service Pack 2). My brother used the computer's wireless internet connection for four years without problems, but lost all internet access when he returned home a couple months ago. The
computer will connect to any network, but has the message "Unidentified Network - Access: Local Only".
The computer first had the problem trying to connect to the Internet through an iPhone's Wifi connection. It happened again on the wireless network at my home. I took the computer to work to test it with a wired connection and had the same result.
I originally thought this was only a wireless problem and completely uninstalled and reinstalled the Atheros wireless card drivers.
I have completely disabled the Windows Firewall and removed all Anti-Virus (Avira free was installed - Norton is not on the computer). I have tried Safe Mode with Networking, and it does not fix the problem.
I ran a Fix-It yesterday that was supposed to fix specific registry errors, but that did not solve the problem either.
I also found a solution on this website that involved enabling sharing. One user said it fixed the problem, but it did not solve it for me.
The only thing I am certain of is that this cannot be a problem with the router. All three places I have connected have various other computers connected constantly: The iPhone regularly connects a different Windows Vista-powered laptop, Windows XP Desktop,
and Windows 7 netbook to the Internet. My wireless router successully connects a Windows XP Desktop, Windows 7 laptop, and Macbook. Obviously, the wired connection at work successfully connects over a dozen computers.
I'm out of ideas on this one...thanks.

    Hi,
I've been having a similar problem; am not able to connect via wifi at our new home, but am able to connect easily at an internet cafe. Obviously, I'd like the convenience of getting connected at home! :)  Getting  "unidentified networK"
and local only access. Also had the same problem with  the yellow ethernet cable  & LAN, but finally found a partial fix online somehow so am at home using the internet now. But it is still a PITA, because every time I  step away to take
a break from the computer, it goes to "sleep" and loses the connection, so I have to do a restart to get the internet connection back. And it would be much nicer to get the Wifi problem fixed, so I can move around the house to a more comfy spot rather
than being shackled in the corner by the yellow cable!  :D
I will attach a screenshot of the ipconfig as suggested above, but am not all that savvy, so would appreciate step-by-step instruction how to solve this problem. I've tried a lot of suggestions, but nothing has worked yet... hoping someone here can help. Thanks
    in advance!  :)
oops! edit to add: grrrr, it wouldn't let me include the screenshot unless I verify my account, which I have not figured out how to do yet... another hurdle!

  • How to configure ipsec policy on windows server 2008 r2 to permit local machine only access to gateway, one other server and it's local ip?

I have applied IPsec policy on local machine(ip address:10.82.138.76) with windows server 2008 ent r2 installed, only permit local machine to comunicate with itself, one other server(ip address:10.82.138.77) and the gateway device(ip address:10.82.138.1).After
i asigned this policy,i can ping the gateway (ip address:10.82.138.1),and the other server(ip address:10.82.138.77),but i can't ping local machine itself(ip address:10.82.138.76),could anybody tell me why and how to solve this problem? When i applied the same
policy to windows server 2003 ent,i can ping the local machine ip address.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your post.
First, try to ping the loopback address 127.0.0.1. If the loopback test succeeds but you cannot ping the local IP address, please post the unedited
ipconfig /all and route print of the problematic computer.

I do not need another wireless network but want to use the airport express for printer access only.  Can this be done and how?

You can configure the AirPort Expess to "Join a wireless network" and enable the Ethernet port so that Ethernet devices will be able to connect.
In order to print from the iOS devices, you will need to have an application like Printopia installed on your Mac. The Mac must be active when you want to print.
More details here: Printopia - AirPrint to Any Printer - Print from iPad - Print from iPhone ...
There is a free trial available for Printopia, so make sure that it will work before you buy the AirPort Express.

    Time Capsule Airport
Hello to all, good day, sorry my english google, but it is the tool I have at the moment. I'm having trouble with my Time Capsule Airport, I made all the settings according to the manual, but there has been a connection problem with my iMac. When I finish my work I turn off the imac and then again when they return to work and care, it can not connect to Time Capsule Airport, making it impossible to remove the files and make back up by Time Machine only works when I turn off and turn on the Airport Time Capsule , but I think this may end up with the unit. What can this happening and how to solve? Thank you.
Obrigado.

This is easier to do with pictures perhaps.. since we do not share a common language and machine translation leaves a lot to be desired.
In the airport utility bring up your Time Capsule.
    Simply post the screenshots here.
    So here is mine.
Click on the Edit button and give us the Internet and Wireless and Network tab..
    eg.
Please also make sure you are set to ipv6 in your wireless or ethernet .. whichever is used.. and do tell which.
This is wifi in your computer.
    The following are important..
DO not use long names with spaces and non-alphanumeric names.
Use short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    eg TC name. TCgen5
    Wireless name TCwifi
Use WPA2 Personal security with 10-20 character pure alphanumeric password.
read apple instructions to help with TM and TC.. they did finally admit it has issues in Mavericks.
OS X Mavericks: Time Machine problems
Mount the TC manually in finder.
    AFP://TCgen5.local
When asked for the password .. that is the disk access password and save it in the keychain.

Hi, my Ipod Schuffle (4 gen) dissapears from windows vista right after I execute Itunes, I've change the drive letter, erase temps in App data file, verified USB drivers, etc... Can someone guide on how to solve this?

If you want the shuffle to be always visible in Windows (outside of iTunes), you need to Enable disk use.
Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, select the Summary tab.  You should see a checkbox that says Enable disk use.  Check it and click Apply.
NOTE:  If disk use is enabled, you have to Eject the shuffle in iTunes, BEFORE you physically disconnect it.  If disk use is NOT enabled, you can disconnect the shuffle at any time, as long as iTunes is not doing something with it at that moment (such as syncing); the shuffle's light will then be blinking (to indicate DO NOT DISCONNECT).
So, unless you want to use the shuffle like a USB flash drive (carry random files on it), you may want to NOT Enable disk use.
