Vista won't recognize jars

Hi!
I got a new computer with Vista, to which I have installed the latest JRE. The problem is that Vista won't recognize jars as executables, or even a valid file type for that matter. When I try to run a jar I get the regular Windows "Which program would you like to open this file with?"-dialog. When I run the jar from the command line, everything seems to work fine though.
Any ideas?

Uninstalled and reinstalled the new update. I even ran the setup as admin, but no dice. And there's no Java settings in the control panel either.

  • Vista won't recognize Palm Centro hardware

I have downloaded from the internet as well as from my Centro Smartphone (Verizon) disk the required software, and when I come to the step to plug in the phone to the computer, all I get is device drivers not found.  I have had it do a search for the drivers to no avail.  This phone's drivers had no problem with my XP computer.  Any ideas??

A couple months ago, I bookmarked this page:
    http://forums.palm.com/palm/board/message?board.id=windows_hotsync&thread.id=17980
I NEED the information on it regarding what to do about syncing via bluetooth for a Palm Centro. I now regret not printing it when the post was visible, but now I get a "message not found" error.
I thought that page had step by step how-to for syncing with bluetooth to the Centro.  Since I have Vista 64-bit, I know that's what I need to do.
Any ideas what happened to that post? Was it moved? To where? I've been browsing the board for an hour now and getting really frustrated.  Thanks.

  • Vista Won't Recognize My Shuffle At All!

When I connect my dock and iPod to my USB port, nothing happens. The problem is not iTunes, but Vista itself. I have confirmed that my USB ports are working through Windows and by attaching my digital camera as a test. This has happened before, and it just magically started working again! I filled my iPod with no trouble about a week ago. I am running iTunes 7.6, which is the most recent. Restarting my computer does not help. As always, Windows troubleshooting shoots blanks.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? And has anyone noticed that Apple support has no email support for this situation? Help!

The same problem with me. I previously had an iPod shuffle 1st generation on my other computer, which was Windows2000, and the USB port broke off so i got an ipod shuffle 2nd generation and i got a new computer, which is Vista, and i just plugged my iPod shuffle 2nd gen in for the first time and iTunes did not show iPod shuffle. and nothing happened at all! Windows said that it could "not find the hardware" and it told me to install iTunes and i reinstalled it and still, nothing happens

  • ITunes 8 won't recognize iPhone

I'm experiencing this issue on 2 separate computers.
When I was prompted to install iTunes 8, I downloaded and installed. During the installation, an error box popped up saying that the iPod service wouldn't be installed. Of course, once installed, the iPhone is no longer recognized by iTunes, although it's picked up fine by Windows as a "camera". Wanting to transfer my latest podcasts to my iPhone, I installed iTunes 8 it to my work computer (Win XP instead of Vista I run at home) and had the same issue.
It says that the iPod service is running, but iTunes won't recognize it. And of course, iTunes won't let me roll back to an older version. I've been searching for a resolution to this issue. I've tried uninstalling / reinstalling, and no luck. I've found other mentions of this issue, but there never seems to be a resolution for it.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having the same problem with an iPod touch 32gb. If you go into "Diagnostics" under "help" on the itunes menu bar, and run the "ipod connection test" or something like that, it'll show "failed" and have a "help" button next to it. This takes you to a web page that lists various steps in solving the problem, beginning with reinstalling iTunes 8. It then recommends several other steps including deleting all iTunes files and shutting down all windows services through "msconfig". The final step recommends wiping your drive and reinstalling Windows then reinstalling iTunes 8. I've tried all but the final step to no avail, but I'm guessing since you tried it with a fresh windows install that it may not even work. I'm hoping there is a resolution for this soon. I still have iTunes 7.7 on my laptop, so I'm considering migrating all my stuff to that until there's a fix. I know it's an iTunes 8 issue, because I synced my iPod +right before+ installing it, just fine. iTunes 8 has never recognized my iPod. Apple has left me with the choice of of re-installing Windows (and subsequently, everything else on my computer) or wiping all traces of iTunes 8 (including music libraries) and rebuilding my entire music collection from scratch, including playlists. Awesome. Just fix the stupid program?

  • My mac won't recognize my external hardrive!!

I have a Maxtor One Touch II 300GB external hardrive with all of my pics and backups, and ever since I installed Leopard it won't recognize the drive. I've read other forums and know it's because it's password protected and Seagate or Apple has come up with a solution yet. So I did the only other thing I could...re-install Tiger with my backup disc which was 10.4.7 for my Mac mini Intel. Now it still won't recognize the drive! The software doesn't automatically startup and even after starting it manually it doesn't recognize. I'm guessing because when I re-installed Tiger and it asked me to archive the newer version it must have kept the same coding or whatever. I don't know much about coding so I'm lost there. I have my Powerbook G4 with Leopard on it, but of course it won't recognize that drive on there either. Right now I have a few options I could re-install Tiger on my powerbook and erase everything, but I can't find the install disk and I'm not sure the install disk from the Mac-mini will work because it's for the Intel processor hopefully that won't matter. Another option is to try and see if my wife's HP with Vista will recognize it, but the drive is formatted for Mac so I'm not sure if it'll work and ask for a password. I'm stuck at frustrated right now...if I could just get a computer to recognize it, take the password off... I would shell out the money to get a new drive recognizable by Leopard and transfer the data over. I DO NOT WANT TO ERASE THIS DRIVE!! I know it still works, but I can't access it.  Anyone got any ideas?

  • Acrobat 9 Standard won't recognize Canon Lide 200 Scanner

My recently installed Acrobat 9 Standard won't recognize my  Canon Lide 200 scanner even though Adobe Photoshop CS2 does.  I don't know what the problem is and how to solve it.

Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 was recently installed on new Vista 64bit computer and functions with all programs and even prints to my Dell 1600n printer, but when I try to scan from the printer, it causes this error message and shuts Acrobat down:
"ADOBE ACROBAT HAS STOPED WORKING A Problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I have lived with this since I bought the computer a month ago. Still no solution from Adobe and no response to an email that I sent to adobe support.

  • Satellite A135-S2356 - BIOS won't recognize SATA Hard Drive

Hello everyone, hope you can help me out.
Got a used Satellite A135-2356, everything looks fine but BIOS won't recognize SATA HDD, shows no disk, downgraded BIOS to 1.30, no good, upgraded to 1.40, no good. BIOS has no options to change/test/detect HDD/SATA settings. Tested hard drive in another laptop and reads it fine. Got restore CD (Vista Basic 32) from Toshiba but since BIOS won't read HDD, can't do anything. Cleaned contacts, no good. This HDD must be too large or something for the board.
    *Hitachi HTS541612J9SA00, 120GB SATA, 5400 RPM*
    Thanks for the help!!!

    Hello Richie
To be honest I do not believe the HDD is too large for your notebook. I can imagine your notebook can handle with 160 GB HDDs too. Unfortunately there is no public document about HDD upgrade possibilities. I can imagine that ASP in your country has info about this stuff.
It is also pretty strange that HDD is not recognized properly. Long time ago I have had the same problem. Every time when I have used F12 at the start up HDD were not listed as bootable device. Solution in my case was to set BIOS to default settings. I believe your BIOS has already default settings but try to do this again.

  • Itunes 8.2.1 won't recognize my 3.0 iPhone

Version 8.2.1 is buggy. I am not the only user who is finding that this version of iTunes no longer recognizes my 3.0 iPhone. Occasionally it won't recognize my iPod Classic until I restart my iMac (circa 2007). My iPhone software is up to date (version 8.0.4 released on 06/30/2009).
    I have:
    Deleted iTunes 8.2.1
    Shut off iTunes helper.
As per an Apple Document on this issue (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747)
    I have deleted AppleMobileDevice.kext and
    I have deleted AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg
    I have emptied the trash
    Then restarted the iMac
    Then reinstalled iTunes 8.2.1
It did not recognize my iPhone
    restarted the iMac again
It did not recognize my iPhone
Apple, where can I get a copy of iTunes 8.2.0. Everything worked with that one.

Thank you, Matt. Actually I did turn up that site in my initial search. Thing is the old itune versions are for Windows and Vista. I'm on an iMac. Have not found an old version for OSX.
Anyhow, I did solve my problem. I had connected to the iMac through a USB hub. When I connected the iPhone and iPod classic directly to the iMac itself, itunes recognized the devices. Oddly, it did not detect them on the more modern USB cable that came with the iPhone 3.0, but with an older, larger cable that came with the iPod classic. Go figure.
The recent software update for the iPhone, supposedly to fix an issue with texting, has returned both iPhone and iPod to their former state and I am able again to connect through a hub (after a couple of iMac restarts -- what else in new!)
Thanks for the reply. My question seems not to be a popular one. I wonder if the connection problem is as widespread as I thought.

  • Reader 9 won't recognize printer

I just installed Reader 9 on my system (Vista Home Premium), and now I can't print anything because Reader won't recognize my printer. I get this error message whenever I try to print:
Before you can perform print-related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you must first install a printer.
I did not get this kind of behavior from Reader 8, so I must assume there's a major error or bug in the code that's causing this. My printer (an Epson Stylus CX4800) is properly installed and works for all other apps but this one. Has anybody else experienced this on their systems?
I'm using Reader 9.0.0 for Windows Vista with Vista Home Premium (SP1).

No good. Did a nozzle check and head cleaning through printer properties while in Reader, and it still refuses to recognize the printer. Not only that, but for some reason it defaults to XPS Document Writer as the main print option at startup, and I can't change that to stay with the Epson instead. This is very puzzling and rather annoying, since I'm now without a print capability until they decide to do a bugfix update.

  • X205-sli1 64bit windows 7 won't recognize sony camera anymore and SLI mode flicker

I suspect this is more a windows 7 driver issue than a laptop issue, but does anyone have any ideas?
    background:
so, started with X205-sli1 default a month ago, since then it has gotten... 4gb ram, dual 500gb drives, and a T9500 CPU  (was running at 85c when idle before so as long as I was redoing the heatsink compond I upgraded the CPU, now runs at 40c when idle and faster).... anybody need a T7250 that works? pm me.
afterwards formated and put windows 7 64bit on it...   since then loaded all the drivers from toshiba website and everthing seems to work fine except it won't recognize the sony DSCW90 camera as a mass storage device like it did before.  The camera still works fine on another system running ubuntu, so I know the camera/cable are good.
second problem, even with the latest nvidia driver I get a nasty flicker when I enable the SLI mode, seems to be driver related....
    Thanks,
    Robert
p.s. the instructions lorddethstalker's signature are spot on for how to do the upgrade... thanks.

I long ago learned when I do an OS install I do a clean one with a complete wipe of the drive... read the instructions and seems about right...
I seem to recall something from way back with a similar problem when I first got the camera... I just don't remember the solution...
Clean installs were the way to go in my thinking as well. However, because of some glitches like this, I would mention a couple of things.
Probably the best way to go, would have been to first have done a full system Toshiba Recovery of your Vista 32 OS, drivers, etc, to your system's factory default out-of-the-box setup. Nice and clean no messy software/hardware updates/installs to mess it up. Then, after that to have done an in place upgrade to Windows 7 32bit. I think you would have had the least amount of trouble from everything I've learned on this forum, and from my own personal experience.
Next, while I fully understand the hyped benefits of the Windows 7 64bit version, the reality can be somewhat different. First, though it has a 64bit capability, your system was originally designed as a 32bit system, supplied with the appropriate 32 bit OS, and as such, it can only take a maximum of 4GB or RAM. Despite your percieved benefit of seeing/using the full 4GB of RAM, this is probably, at the very least, un-done by the fact that your old 32bit software actually runs faster on Windows 7 32bit. If your system could handle more than 4GB of RAM, and especially if you were willing to invest in new 64bit software, it would have been worthwhile to install Windows 7 64bit. Otherwise, I sincerely doubt that it was.
The main chipset and its drivers are what handles the USB ports. If you did (re)install those, from the links I gave you before, there's not much else you can do there. While it is not the same problem you are experiencing, the only other suggestions I have is to follow the instructions in Method 3 of this article:
USB port may stop working after you remove or insert a USB device
Did you ever try the system reset I mentioned before?
    Good luck.
    Mike
