Visual Corruption Attacks

'd just got my G4 back to school, when I found that the ribbon connector to the Superdrive was jostled loose when I took my G4 in to TekServe for a new power supply. I re connected it, but now the picture was SERIOUSLY messing up. There was heavy visual corruption, and it all started when I tried to play a DVD. Now, it comes and goes, sometimes it's just a little static around the fringes of windows, other times white dots on my desktop, and other times it's a whole mess of static that totally freezes up my screen. When it's effecting a window, the static clings to the window until I drag it off screen. When I pull it back, it's fine, until the static starts appearing again when I click a link or scroll down or something.
I've tried reconnecting the power connector to my video card (Radeon 9800 Pro Mac), tried taking the card itself out and putting it back in, Reinstalling the driver for the card, and making sure my RAM was securely in (it wasn't, which was why it was running so slow, but it didn't fix the static). What the ** could this be? Is it the DVD drive, somehow killing the video? Is it the Monitor, or the Cable? I have to run the monitor though a DVI-ADC Adaptor, could that be the big problem? How about the card? How the ** would I KNOW?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I'm an artist and I use my computer a lot, so I really need some help.

  • Sometimes a ton of visual corruption comes up

Sometimes when I'm on a webpage corruption takes over the webpage, and when the webpage is moved visual corruption affects the rest of the desktop and any open programs or windows. Closing the web browser does not resolve the problem. Restarting the computer does, with no obvious after effects. This has happened 3 times. Twice on memebase and once while on flight rising. I got Bitdefender a while recently, but it hasn't found any malware so far.

  • Strange visual corruption of Firefox 7.0.1, persists after complete removal and reinstall

I noticed this a couple of days ago but my firefox appears 'distorted' almost like everything is scribbled. The text isn't smooth or distinct, all borders don't appear even and it persists through all menus, sub-menus, every website, etc.
No other software on my system is experiencing this, and my laptop install of Firefox is just fine. I have a screenshot to compare between FF7.0.1 and the most recent build of Chrome.
While this only started a few days ago I did recently install a new video card, ATI HD 6750, however no other software is affected in the same way.
I've attempted to run a full removal of Firefox and reinstall but the problem persists after reinstallation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Additional:
I ran FF in safe mode and that corrected the visual corruption but there were no differences in add-ons etc so still no idea what the fundamental cause of the issue is. Please see attached screenshot for clarity

  • W520 graphics/visual corruption

    Hi folks
So I have visual error/corruption and I'm assuming its something to do with the graphics card/s on the machine.
It appears across various applications, word, powerpoint, thunderbird, spotify, photoshop, acid pro and some others...
see these images for an example.

i seem to get random drop out on the interface of the respective piece of software at the time it is running,
it doesnt always happen and perhaps a day may go by with no problems.... but then it comes back
chunks of the interface will double-up or disappear and scrolling over often makes invisible bits reappear.
Minimizing then re-maximizing the app often refreshes it and it goes back to normal or in thundirbird saving the open email composition will bring the text back into alignment and make it all legible again....
i have updated my drivers on both the onboard graphics and the Nvidia Quadro 2000M
    with no joy or luck.
i cant seem to pinpoint what it may be
    any ideas anyone
or is/has anyone experienced the same problems?

I think you might want to do a bit more troubleshooting, to narrow down the cause of the problem, before attempting to take action to solve the problem.
Unless someone else has had prior experience with exactly this problem and can provide a 'magic bullet' solution, I think you should go into the BIOS and set the machine to run exclusively on the discrete graphics, and then see if the problem persists.  Then, after sufficient experience with that modality, try setting the machine to run exclusively on integrated graphics and see if the problem persists.
If nothing else, that will allow you to narrow the problem down to one of the two graphics modes.
You might also want to consider going into the 'Power Manager' and setting the machine up as 'High Performance' to ensure that no energy-saving initiatives are muddying the waters.

  • Files show as corrupted in LR 5, when stored on an external HD

Basically, the title sums it up. I was running out of space on my 500GB laptop HD, so I decided to start saving RAW files to an external 1TB HD. Immediately, the files started showing up as corrupted when viewed in Develop module. Only a few at first, but it got progressively worse - to the point of 80% corrupt and unusable.
I thought this was a HD problem. So I went ahead and bought a second HD (2TB) and started saving files there. Same problem. Now, when I try to save the same files to the laptop HD - no problem, all is well (as it has always been before; the issue was space).
I was willing to allow for it to be the external drive problem. But what are the chances that TWO external hard drives in a row will be problematic (especially when everything else on them is fine)? Not high, I reckon.
So I am trying to wrap my mind around it and it drives me mad - I cannot work, I don't know what is going on and I have no idea what to do... It cannot be the camera - again, the same files are fine when saved to the internal HD. It cannot be the SD card - I am using several, from different companies and bought at different times, and again, the files are fine in the internal drive. It cannot be the external drive failure - I tried two in a row, and everything else on those drives is fine. But when viewed in LR 5, those files on external drives show up as corrupted. I am losing my mind!
I would much appreciate any help and input. I have no idea where to turn with this - it is not computer problem per se, and there is no "Lightroom repair" that I know of...
    Thanks for looking at this!

Thank you for replying. That is right, I am quite suspicious of memory - my laptop is full to the brim and I suspect that this may affect available memory and cause some problems in LR. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about computers to be certain.
The card reader - quite simple: the card reader is the same, whether I save the files to the internal or external drives. I put the SD card in it, then copy the files and paste them where I want them. When done, I then open the LR and synchronize the folder. When I copy and paste files to the internal drive, the images look fine in LR; when I copy and paste them into the external drive, 80% of them come up visually corrupted in LR. Since the same card reader is used in both cases, and the files are OK when saved internally, I am assuming it is not the card reader.
So, basically, when I became aware of the problem, I tried copying and saving the same file both internally and externally from the card reader, in order to verify what was going on. That is how the same file (more than one, actually) ended up on three different drives.
Right now, my instinct is to copy everything to an external drive and clear some space on the internal one. I am very apprehensive though - what if something is causing file corruption on the external drives - in that case I will be corrupting everything when I migrate the files. Hence my previous question - are the files actually corrupted, or do they simply appear corrupted in LR because of memory issues? As I said, I don't know enough about this to be certain and do not know what to do.

  • Lightroom 5 corrupting files

Hello all - I've read on the forums that some users have experienced file corruption they attribute to Lightroom, while others in response insist Lightroom cannot alter an original raw file in any way.  That said, it sure seems to me that Lightroom is somehow corrupting some of my Nikon NEF files.
This appears typically as lines of "ripped", blocky and unregistered color across the image left to right in horizontally formatted NEF files, as an example. Some portion of the image may also be missing and appears white on screen.  These were files shot in the field and originally imported to a laptop, backed up to external drives, and one of those drives used as the source for import into my desktop editing machine.  The corruption occurs after ingest into the desktop, and seems to happen randomly.
On occasion I am able to discard the preview for the corrupted file and regenerate a preview, which in turn reveals the image is in fact okay.  However, as I encountered this afternoon, the regenerated preview results in no change to the apparent file corruption.  I took this file into One One Photo Suite software, and it originally showed a preview JPG as non corrupt but when I selected the image to edit full screen it would not read the file.  I took the same file then into View NX software where its preview again appeared fine in the grid view, then fine again when I brought the file up on full screen to edit.  I output a TIF version of the file from View NX and the output TIF exhibited the same visual corruption as I found initially in Lightroom. When back in View NX, I select the RAW button in the upper left corner - this seems to generate a new preview in View NX and indeed the new preview file appears corrupt.
The original file on the laptop and on its external backup drive check out okay - I re-ingested them to a test folder on the desktop, and they read fine in View NX and in Lightroom.  So the problem occurs on my desktop sometime after ingest from the laptop (I know this because the file was appeared a-okay after that laptop to desktop ingest, but now - a couple of days later - it is corrupt on the desktop harddrive).
I've checked and rechecked the desktop harddrive (a 4tb drive) and it checks out okay.
It sure seems to me that Lightroom must read the original NEF file in order to extract metadata as well as the JPG preview file from it.  I don't see any other way for Lightroom to bring that information into its catalog, so my assumption therefore is that Lightroom in fact accesses the original NEF file to do this.  If it accesses it at least reads the file and my thought is that action must somehow corrupt the file data on random images, or perhaps in the process of extracting metadata and writing sidecar XMP files, as I've set my system up to do that by default.
BTW this has occurred most recently on D7100 camera files as well as my new D810 camera files.  The file in question came out of the D810.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm using Lightroom - latest version 5.7 (on both laptop and desktop) - to ingest from cards into laptop.  I then output a catalog containing the recent shoot to the laptop's external backup drive, take that drive to the desktop, connect via USB 3.0 and use Lightroom on the desktop to import the catalog to the desktop.

  • Latest CS6 update corrupts PS icon?

I applied the lateset automatic update to Photoshop CS6 (the one that adds Retina display support) and it's corrupted the Photoshop icon (Mac OS X).
Here's a composite screenshot showing the icon in the Dock, the small icon in the Finder's Column View, and the large icon in the Finder doesn't display at all, and is replaced with a generic icon. They all exhibit a different type of visual corruption.
Anyone else experience this? Any idea how to fix?
    Thanks,
    R

If the reboot doesn't completely fix it, see my post from last night when I saw the same thing:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4914538#4914538
On my system, the reboot was part of the procedure where I repaired permissions by booting to recovery partition. The reboot may well have fixed the finder issue, however Launchpad icon was not fixed until I deleted the .db file from '~/Library/Application Support/Dock' folder and rebooted a second time.
Note - you can disregard my last comment concerning final purchase since it isn't germaine to the issue.

  • Previews corrupted in LR Windows

Im running LR in Windows XP SP3. Im using it in a Mac via Boot Camp. That means a separate partition, the Mac OS is not running at the same time. I use this for image capture. I use Canon Utilities for Auto Import and the process is fast and solid.
I was using and older generation MacBook to do this with no problems. I recently switched to a new MacBook and when I shoot an image with a light or blown out background the thumbnail preview gets very odd, sometimes solarized, sometimes black, sometimes it only effects the the preview and sometimes the large preview image as well. Ive tried adjusting the settings for the video card (NVIDIA) and the import quality and size, no luck. I then switched to a new MacBookPro, same problem. Im
using Lightroom 2.2. When I export and open the database in a MacOS and build a 1:1 preview this problem goes away. (I use Windows for capture because the USB throughput is much faster and more robust then the mac side.
I did check the NVIDIA settings for the Multiple Display settings but it does not seem to be active in a laptop. Here are some posted samples: http://www.kodakgallery.com/niedorf

  • Corruption on import

I have been running Lightroom since LRv1. We base our entire workflow around importing individual catalogs, convert to DNG, backup 3x and work from the original import. It has been going well. Howver we are recently having some import corruption issues that seem to be most prevelent on LRv 3.0.
I have read that there are the same problems on 3.2, so I don't know where to go from here.
Today wasn't as much as a panic as in the past. Usually we are dealing with wedding images. Today was (only) some vacation images from Zion, Utah. I don't want to lose them, but it won't be the end of our business if I did.
    Here are the events:
    1. Imported to LR 3.0, convert to DNG
    >result: images and preview thumbnail were coming in visually corrupted
    >> stopped the import
    2. Imported to LR 3.0, set to "move images to new folder and import to catalog". Set up new catalog and folder
    >result: previews looked ok, however when you clicked on the image to enlarge or get a closer look, they showed the corruption in the high-res view which then showed up in the preview thumbnail.
    3. Imported to LR v2.6, convert to DNG in a new folder and newly named catalog.
    >result: import worked fine. No issues with any of the images.
    4. Went to LR 3.0, browsed to open LR2.6 catalog created in step 3.
    >result: LR 3.0 prompted to "upgrade catalog to 3.0" clicked OK. Everything is working and viewing normally.
I hope this is helpful to anyone in distress.
In any case, if there are any other hints, tips, tricks or words of advice, bring 'em on!
    Thanks.

Q:Are you using a card reader or going directly from the camera?
    A:Using an internal card reader.
Q:Do you get the same results copying the images to a local disk and adding/moving from there?
A: (took a while to find time to set this up) No. Didn't appear to have the same corruption issues after copying the images from the CF card to the hard drive and then importing them to a new catalog. - Settings were set to convert to DNG.
Q:Apart from your report that Lr 2 does not have this problem (this is the part that has me concerned), how sure are you the CF card is sound?
A: Not sure how to be absolutely certain that the card is sound. I don't think I have ever felt 100% certain about any CF card. Are there tests?

  • End of File error on .nef files

I am beginning to see a growing number of my .nef files becoming visually corrupt in the viewer and showing the "end of file" error when opening in PS or any other application.
The corruption does NOT seem to affect the associated .jpg file (if there is one) but I am also NOT able to generate another "clean" .jpg file with the .nef files that have become corrupt.
I hope that I haven't confused everyone - but this issue is rather baffeling in that I can't seem to pinpoint a cause.
My master files are stored as reference files on a server share - all shot with a Nikon D2X.
Does anyone have an idea of what may be causing this - and better yet - is there a way to reverse the corruption?

I do have a number of other systems that I can use to test from. THe file server is a general purpose server in my home running 10.4.x with all of the latest patches, etc.
I am using a SanDisk card reader to ingest directly into Aperture. The corruptness appears to be random.
I am using a Nikon D2X with a number of CF cards, usually 1 or 2GB in size. I capture recording .nef (RAW) images to the CF card.
My workstation is a PowerMac, Dual G5, with 2.5GB processors and 2.5GB of memory. I am using MacOS 10.4.2 with all of the appropriate patches and updates.
The Server is a PowerMac, Dual G5, with 2.5GB processors and 2.5GB of memory. The server is running MacOS 10.4.x Server, again with all of the appropriate patches and software.
The network is Gigabit speed with one switch between my workstation and the server. The Switch is a GSM7224 L2, 24-port 10/100/1000MBps managed switch.
The users in my home (in this case; me) log into any of a number of workstations in my home and authenticate against the server using LDAP. Once authenticated, home directories are available and stored on the server.
This appears to be network related as I can ingest and save locally to the server and open the files without any corruption.

  • Intermittent colour rendering problem

In the past few weeks I've noticed a problem with my Photoshop CS5 (12.0.4) / Windows 7 64-bit setup. Maybe once a day, after using Photoshop for a while, the current document's colours will look like they're using the wrong colour space, usually looking more vivid and artificial. The only way out of the situation is to restart Photoshop.
Example 1: after editing an image in AdobeRGB, I flatten it and run an action to resize, sharpen, and convert to sRGB. Occasionally, the picture ends up looking psychedelic.
Example 2: after copying a selection in a flattened sRGB image, I create a new sRGB image and paste. Occasionally, the new image is clearly off, still similar hues but changed in tone and saturation; going back to the original window, there is visual corruption.
I've got an ATI HD5670 graphics card, and have gone through maybe 3 driver revisions while this problem has existed. It's too infrequent a problem to easily replicate, and what I usually do is save and earlier state as a PSD and reload Photoshop.
    Any suggestions?

I've reset my ATI Catalyst settings and switched off Overdrive. I haven't done much with Photoshop this week, but I was working on an image just now and the problem happened again.
I use AdobeRGB workspace. I was working on an image, and, after finishing all my processing, I was doing my usual chores: running Dr Brown's Services to create two sets of JPEGs of different sizes and colourspaces with and without watermarks... I then ran an action for online gallery publishing:
    Flatten Image
    Fit Image to 2048 square
Smart Sharpen 0.4 pixels at 50%
Convert to sRGB with Relative Colormetric intent and BPComp.
Normally, this works fine. Occasionally (including just now), the colours go warm/vivid. As an experiment, I went back one step in History (avoiding the last conversion step above) and the colours are returned to normal. Go forwards again, and the image overheats. Going back a step and doing the colourspace conversion manually does not create the colour problem.
Why this should happen only occasionally, I have no idea. It gets the profile conversion wrong intermittently; maybe because it's part of an action assigned to a key combination. God knows. I'm baffled.

  • .Tiff files show as RAW files

I have an Olympus C-770 Ultra Zoom and have just shot some .Tiff files and loaded them into my 5th G. iPod via the Apple camera connector. They have shown up as RAW files for some unknown reason so I can't view them on the iPod. What is going on and what is the solution?

  • Alternate video tracks not visible

I have video files that occasionally display very different content to the primary video content, especially the first time they're played. The video stream with start to disintegrate and for a few seconds something completely different is viewable. It's also not easily repeated. Its not like pristine video content suddenly appears. The main content becomes visually corrupt or fragmented, pixilated, smeared, etc and alternate content becomes visible for brief periods.
What can I do to separate or remove the primary video track enabling the covered tracks to be visible?
I'm viewing these video files with vlc and premiere pro in a Windows 7 environment, but not skilled enough to devise a procedure to expose the underlying content.
Answering questions is not a problem.
Thanks for any suggestions or links to relevant material.

If you are willing to try anything, how about importing the file into AE?
I'm guessing the encoding is corrupt or non-standard since you are seeing the same problem in several programs.
How to get the correct frames? Well, if you are seeing different frames each time you play through it, you may have to do a manual save of each frame and then try to put them in the correct order.
I'd try to open the file in several other video programs and see if it works in any of them. Have you tried Handbrake, for example?
