Visual Glitches in Lion

I just bought a 27" iMac, and everything has been fine until a few days ago, when I started to notice some slight visual glitches. They don't show up everytime I use my computer either. I have updated all software on the computer, because I thought that may have been a quick fix. Has anyone had or know of these visual glitching problems? TIA.
My computer specs are

I have since discovered that my Energy Saver > Automatic Graphics Switching" was accidentally turned back ON.
I have now re-installed gfxCardStatus so that I can ALWAYS see the status of my "Integrated" vs. "Discrete" graphics on my menu bar at the top...and force it to stay "Dedicated" always to avoid graphics switching issues that may be related to rMBP system stability.
Also, after having instability issues with my Retina MBP while using AirDisplay, I had uninstalled that for several weeks.  I reinstalled AirDisplay after upgrading to Mountain Lion last week.
So, in summary, the Graphics Switching and AirDisplay now represent two additional variables in my crash history.
Since Disabling (unchecking) "Automatic Graphics Switching" and uninstalling AirDisplay, I have had no Crashes.
I will post here again if I am able to narrow it down to one of those two as the cause of my crash problems.
As the two previous posts have indicated, it seems that Firefox was NOT the cause of my crash problems.
Most likely "Automatic Graphics Switching" and/or AirDisplay.
Thanks much.

  • Retina MBP - visual glitches after returning from sleep

On the new Retina MBP (using the highest res setting), I'm noticing that there are significant visual glitches (ghosting, persistent blocks, lack of redraw, etc...) upon returning from sleep.
Is anyone else seeing this problem?

Yup, I'm having the same problem, except that my machine keeps crashing over and over again.  I've gone through the console, and it seems like different processes keep crashing (crash reporter, MDS (Spotlight), kernel_task, etc.)  I can safely boot into Safe Mode, but if I restart my machine, almost as soon as I get past the login screen, I get screen glitches and the machine either restarts itself or hangs.  NOT HAPPY.
MBP Retina 2.7 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB hard drive.  I installed all of the latest software updates (Thunderbolt, MBP Retina update, MBP mid-2012 OS X version, etc.)
I transferred over all files and apps from my mid-2011 MBP overnight.  I thought it was some incompatibility with installed software on my old machine (from which I'm typing this), so I started uninstalling things as soon as I could get logged in.  Little Snitch, gone.  EyeTV, gone.  SMCFanControl, gone.  Going through the Console, I saw that an old ATI program was trying to launch, so I pulled that and all of its associated .kext files out.  Nothing worked.  So, I'm reinstalling Lion on that machine right now, and we'll see how it goes.
I've spent my entire morning working on this *&(%^ thing.  I am NOT pleased.  I don't have time to be a beta tester for Apple.

  • Glitches in Lion - is there a solution or should I go back to SL?

I'm having a lot of stupid little glitches with Lion that are unfortunately making it difficult to use. Here's a list:
Netflix keeps giving me the Silverlight error prompting me to uninstall and reinstall, which I do to no avail.
If I try to sign out of my account in the App store it signs me in again within a second.
If I try to download updates from the App store I get a (100) error.
Postbox keeps prompting me to re-enter a password for one of my accounts even though I am recieving mail.
    Launchpad resets on startup.
    iTunes will not update.
I can't put anything on my Desktop because there is no space...I'm assuming this is because it's running from Recovery HD.
"Photobooth can't save your photos" error.
I really don't want to go back to Snow Leopard and I love all of the features of Lion but I can't continue to use it if these errors persist. Are there any fixes to these? I've tried repairing disk permissions and verifying that my disk is ok, along with reinstalling Lion from a USB stick.

  • Visual glitches in exported QuickTime movie (but not in FCP); any ideas?

We shot a short film with a Sony camera (standard def), but it apparently isn't compatible w/ FC Studio software. So we captured and did a rough-cut on my friend's PC rig (Adobe Premiere Pro), burned raw files of our rough cut on to dvd's, then transferred from those discs to my rig. The codec of this footage worked fine in FCP, but wasn't supported by Color. So I used Compressor to convert all referenced files to Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), as it seemed the best conversion I tried (no loss of film quality) and obviously now is supported by Color.
However, the final rendered QuickTime movie (exported from FCP) had some odd visual glitches that occur right before the end of a clip (perhaps 10-15 frames before the end): it's like the brightness or gamma level suddenly drops a noticeable amount right at the end of a clip (again, ~10-15 frames). I couldn't say for sure if it's the last 10-15 frames that are appropriate and the REST of the clip is what's out of whack.
Initially, I thought it was a problem with Color (as these were Color-corrected sequences I was exporting). But I just tried it with a non-color corrected sequence, and the errors are still there.
Any ideas what's going on? Any suggestions/solutions? Did I pick an inappropriate conversion on Compressor?

I think this may be an AVI conversion glitch.
Well I am guessing that from Premiere Pro they came out as AVI? If that is the case well the best thing to do would be to open it with Quicktime Pro and export it as DV/DVCPRO NTSC .MOV
From there you should be able to bring it into FCP without a hitch and then put color down,
But in order to save time I would try first exporting just that last little segment again throwing it into Compressor and see if it comes out okay. It may be that on capture there was some dropped frames on the end so double check that last little bit.

  • Visual Glitch in Labview 8.2 for OS X

    Hello,
I recently got LabVIEW 8.2 for Mac OS X and I'm having some problems with visual glitches in block diagrams. When I scroll the window, everything looks ok until I mouse over something (a wire or a function). If I mouse over a function for example, a second image will appear where the function originally was before I scrolled the window. If a structure is highlighted, the corners and centers of each side will turn white where the resize squares would be.
Minimizing the window or dragging something else over the window does not fix the problem. Closing the block diagram and reopening it or scrolling it completely off the screen then back on does fix it, however unless I switch to the front diagram and back the glitches simply happen again. I attached a screenshot of the problem, let me know if anything else would be helpful.
I'm running OS X 10.4.10 and have an ATI Radeon 9600 with a 20 inch cinema display.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I contacted support about this problem and they were able to reproduce the problem. Since I didn't find anything about this problem when I searched the forums, hopefully if anyone else runs into this they can find this thread.
The things I do to get around it are:
    1. Don't scroll with the mouse wheel. Use the scroll bars on the sides instead.
    2. If you do scroll with the wheel, switch to the front panel and back before you mouse over anything.
    3. If the screen gets messed up, closing the block diagram and using ctrl-e to immediately open it again is probably the best way to fix it.

  • ISSUE: Visual Glitches created when file transferring with Project Manager.

I am color grading a feature film in DaVinci and the person who edited the film only logged the footage in premiere and not even all of it. So, as far as I know, the only simple solution is to use project manager to transfer all the files with their in project labels and duplicates with unique names. BUT, when I do this, I end up with visual glitches all over the transferred files. Some are minor and others are huge and for multiple frames. I have no idea what could be causing this or what I could do to fix it. Please help, I have a very close deadline and need to get this resolved!

  • Visual Glitches in 720p HD Exported Footage on Final Cut Pro

    Hi...
I'm working with Final Cut Pro, on a brand new Mac Book Pro. My footage has come from a Kodak Zi8 video Camera. It was shot at 720p, and the format is MOV.
I've cut up all my footage into a nice little video diary, with simple cross dissolves, and a few text overlays. Nothing fancy. But when I export it, my final file has a ton of visual glitches throughout the length of the video. A lot of the transitions it freezes on and then comes in after.
I'm exported as a self-contained MOV file. I've never had this problem with SD footage. Am I doing something wrong? Help please.

ok... How would i go about converting the footage, considering that the footage comes off the camera in it's raw state in that format. What program should I use... and what difference would it make.
My editing process ran smoothly... it was when I exported the file that I noticed the glitches.
I always export as a high quality quicktime format. Until I clicked the "recompress all frames" option, it wasn't rendering the transitions and text overlays correctly.
The final result looks great now... for a cheap "HD" non 3 CCD camera. See it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4rNajjeURM
I have a Panansonic HVX, with a P2 card that I could shoot and edit at 1080i, but for simple video diaries, I need a quick solution for editing this footage. And imovie doesn't give me the versatility that FCP does.

  • Logic Pro 9 visual glitches with Mavericks update

    Hi Guys,
I updated to Mavericks on the day of it's release. I'm running Logic Pro (9.1.6) and everytime I hit play I now get these black blocks that follow my playhead. amongst other smaller visual glitches like midi notes appearing in the arrange window rather than the piano roll... I'm not totally convinced this is anything to do with Logic Pro 9's compatibility with Mavericks however the problems only started since the installation.
    Any ideas?

I'm rnning Logic 8.0.2 and i am also  having this issue. also my Mbox 2 Mini is not working (i know it's not the best interface anyway, but  still.

  • Visual Glitches On iMac

Yesterday I was working with my iMac (24-inch iMac 2008 with a Nvidia 8800GS), and it suddenly froze, and the screen was covered in dark blue spots, with various visual glitches such as black bars appearing on the screen and flickering. I could still move the mouse and iTunes continued to play, but it would regularly lock up, and I was unable to interact with any of the open apps or the Finder.
I performed a hard shut down and re-booted and the same thing happened within minutes, so I shut down and cleaned the PRAM & NVRAM. Upon re-booting (and after the Apple symbol dissapeared) I was presented with a light grey screen with some artifacts which used to form my desktop, and the bottom half of the screen constantly flickered.
Okay, I resign myself to the fact that I've probably got a cooked GPU, and go to bed. This morning I try the Mac again, to the same result, but afterwards I boot up into my Windows XP partition, and it works... perfectly. So I decide to run it through its paces a bit, and run a game, and it works fine, no graphical problems or issues. In fact the only graphics problem of any note is when I change the volume, and the osx volume controls flickers in and out of view.
So now I'm confused. Surely if the GPU was cooked, it couldn't run a 3D game (I used Psi-Ops to test), yet clearly something's wrong.
The only hardware modification I've done to the Mac, was to swap out the stock 2 x 1gb ram modules for 2 x 2gb ram, but that was two months ago now, and it's all been running without issue so far.
So any ideas as to what the problem could be, and is there anything more I can do to try and fix it myself before bringig it in for repair?
Thanks in advance for any help offerred.

Exact setup as except 4 each 1tb black WD drives and two 2.26 cpu's( early 2009) and no problems at all. I have explanation fore you problems. Just get Apple to replace your machine again...

  • Yahoo! Mail glitches with Lion mail client and Address Book app

I had really been looking forward to using my Yahoo! mail account in the Lion mail client but now that it is here and I have set it up and used it for a few days I am noticing the following issues:
New mail is not always received or is received late. Yahoo! Webmail portal shows new items but these sometimes do not appear in Lion mail client even after a manual 'get mail' check.
Mail marked as read in Yahoo! Webmail portal or in mail clients in iOS devices such as iPhone or iPad is not marked as read in Lion mail client, however the reverse does work (i.e. mail marked as read in Lion mail client does mark the message as read in webmail and in clients on iOS devices).
Yahoo! Aliases are not supported. Yes, you can add aliases by inserting the other email addresses in the 'Email Address' field of the account settings, but you cannot add more than one display name.
I have also found that if you turn on Yahoo! contacts via the tick-box in the new 'Mail, Contacts & Calendars' pref pane in System Preferences that I end up with random duplicated contacts. These duplicates are not seen on iOS devices, just in the Address Book app. If you delete a duplicate contact, it deletes the contact altogether. However, I have found that if you keep contacts unticked in the pref pane and add your Yahoo! account the old-fashioned way (i.e. via the Address Book app's own preferences) then the contacts sync through perfectly with no duplications.
I would be interested to know if anybody else is experiencing these issues. It may be worth noting that mine is not a @yahoo.com address but @xtra.co.nz which belongs to my ISP here in New Zealand, but the mail is managed by Yahoo!. The account works perfectly as a Yahoo! account on iOS devices and does appear to be working in Lion, except for these small glitches but I don't imagine these are specific to @xtra.co.nz addresses.
    Thanks
    Steve

i've had the same experience here.
essentially it seems like lion mail.app just takes an incredibly long time to pickup new changes from the IMAP server at yahoo.
ios and webmail are obviously much quicker.
if it is working on ios, why does is it so delayed in mail?
    any solutions out there?

  • Spaces Visual Glitch

A quick summary would be that _when using the arrow keys shortcuts to switch between spaces, I get visual bugs._ (Click + hold on titlebar , then ⌘ Arrow, or ⌘⌥ Arrow.. etc)
As I switch the app I'm holding between Spaces using this method, the HUD showing which Space it is in only displays sporadically.
I've tried changing Spaces settings, turning it on and off, restarts etc and it still does it.
If i use the number keys it is fine now matter how quick i change an app between spaces.
If i use the drag method its fine.. but you can only do that slowly
If i use the titlebar arrow keys method slowly and wait for the HUD to fade out before switching to another space its fine. (i.e move from 1 to 2, HUD shows, wait until it fades out, then move it to space 4, HUD shows)
BUT... if i flick an app between spaces quickly the HUD only shows sporadically after the first switch. Sometimes the desktop image will flicker in front of everything for a fraction of a second. I
I have an Alu MacBook, and it does this after a restart when there is plenty of free RAM, ~1GB. I can acheive the described glitches by doing a fresh restart and only opening a Finder window. The problem still occurs when i try to jump that around spaces quickly.

I made a video to show more effectively what I mean.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jq7NxNrl24s
As you can see the HUD doesn't display all the time. I'm not hopeful for (or expecting) a solution, although I don't remember it being like that before 10.5.7. But I'd just like to find out what you think of the bug and if anyone else can get the same results.
I do realise it is a very minor thing, albeit one that irritates me.

  • Is this another glitch in Lion?

If it wasn't intentional that Lion made funadmental changes in the operation of iWork, is it a glitch? For example,  the removal of "save as" in Pages reduces the efficiency of the Pages workflow by replacing a single action with several, but perhaps I am not doing it right?
I humbly accept that Apple can do anything it wants with it's operating systems, and make any post facto changes in the end-user's existing software, but in this case is there a "fix" coming, or is there a single-step work around that will serve the same purpose that I am not aware of?

The replacement of Save As with Duplicate is fully intentional. Yes, many people are irritated with the change. Bug reports and feature requests have been filed. Apple is standing firm on the new way of doing a Save As. Don't count on Save As coming back in Lion. In fact, don't count on it coming back ever.
This change, along with a dozen or so other changes that got in the way of my productivity, are why I gave up on Lion and returned to Snow Leopard.

  • Glitch with Lion, MAMP or user

I've read online others are having problems with MAMP and test server pages not working correctly since starting to use Lion.  I'm still learning about PHP so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here.
I'm using OS X Lion and just reinstalled MAMP today after putting the other installation in the trash and emptying it.
I started a new test page with dreamweaver CS5 called phpinfo.php in the htdocs folder to simply display the phpinfo page.  Both Apache and MySQL are running.   However, when I open the page by "preview/debug in browser" through dreamweaver, the page that comes up is:
    Not Found
The requested URL /designer/phpinfo.php was not found on this server.
    using this path:  http://localhost/designer/phpinfo.php
The page phpinfo.php IS in a folder called "designer" in the htdocs folder, so I don't understand why is says it can't find it.
I'm trying every forum I can think of related to this issue to find out if anyone can help me with this, and since I read that others started having a similar glitch since starting to use OS Lion, I thought I'd try here as well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I think MAMP runs on port 8888. Try http://localhost:8888/designer/phpinfo.php

  • Graphics glitch Mountain Lion MBP

So I loaded Mountain Lion on my late 2009 MBP and while the computer was fine before the upgrade, afterwards is a different story. Despite the fact I have 8GB of RAM, it seems to be sluggish, but the main problem stems from the graphics on the display. When I go to use any two-finger gesture (about 70% of the time) the screen will flicker and then "tear" and show portions of the screen in random places, if I don't touch it or restart it, it will change to the "snow" or static fuzz look.
This happened shortly after I bought the computer, which I took back to Apple and had them replace the NVIDIA graphics card and I've been fine since. Now the issue, with the newer card, only 30 mins after installing Mountain Lion, has come back.
This graphics card is one of those dual cards, the one that allows for better battery life or better graphic performance.
    Any suggestions?

I decided to call Apple Care, the first person (girl) was very helpful, she had me reset my PRAM, do a disk repair and even a full reinstall of Mountain Lion. She told me that if after the install, the problem still persisted, to call back (as she had given me 90 days of support for Mountain Lion). However, when I called back, because the issue still kept happening (surprise), I got a guy, who barely spoke english, which was the first time this has ever happened when I've called Apple. He was very rude and didn't really seem to fully understand what I was trying to explain to him, regardless of the fact that my entire case was on the computer in front of him. After explaining to him that I had one logic board fail over a year ago, that had since been replaced, my computer had been working fine, that is until I installed OS X 10.8. He said that is impossible as this is a hardware issue and Moutain Lion is software. After trying to explain to an "Apple" rep that the software in Mountain Lion contains drivers for "hardware" and that, that could be the issue, he refuted the possibility. I then pointed out that I've posted on the Apple support forums....want to know his reply, you'll love this.
He said and I quote: "We" [Apple] don't reference or acknowledge the forums for issues like this, because our competitors can change their names or make accounts and post false information in our forums, attempting to degrade our products and make us look bad."
Can you believe that?? So regardless of the fact that my logic board has now failed twice in 3 years, he tells me since I don't have Apple Care extended support, I'll have to pay out of pocket. Frustrated and annoyed by the most unprofessional Apple rep I've ever encountered, I hung up the phone and will be making a trip to my nearest Apple retail store (an hour away) this evening. At least I'll have someone who speaks english and I can actually show them the issue first hand, as the computer can't go more than 5 mins without the glitch showing up.
To see if you are having similar issues: Go to YouTube and type this in exactly (or copy and paste it)
"MacBook Pro graphic issue after Mountain Lion install" minue the quotes. It will be posted by me, mtwewerka.
I just thought I'd share this issue with the CSR at Apple with you all, oh, he also said he has never heard of this issue. He said since ML has been released, he's been taking calls for days and I'm the first person that's reported this problem. After reading all of your responses, I can only assume he's lying. However, in case he isn't, if you haven't already, I highly recommend you call Apple at 800-APL-CARE and tell them of your issue so we can get this noticed by a few representatives. Seeing how I run my own tech new blog, believe me, I'll be spreading the word...just not with the same level of hostility as I am on these forums.

  • Mavericks visual glitches, help

My computer is a macbook pro mid 2010 with 4 gb of ram and a 2.66 i7 processor. I installed mavericks a couple of days ago and I noticed strange lines outlining all of my windows. They started off all being black, but as time went on they would become more and more dramatic until they would resemble something like this.
    http://imgur.com/a/9TlAV
The only current solution is to simply restart my computer, but it won't be long before the glitch comes back. Please help me, I can't survive without my computer.

As previously stated by people from this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5468958?tstart=0 you can actually temporarily get rid of the lines and artifacts by going into System Preferences, Energy Saver, then uncheking and checking "Automatic Graphics Swtiching". This is better than having to restart your computer each time.
I definitely think this is a software and not a hardware problem–I've never had any problems with Mountain Lion, and I certainly never had this problem: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088.
Hope this shortcut saves you some time in case you didn't know it. I too was restarting my Mac until I figured it out.
