Visualization at External HD files / Storage capacity after Time Machine

Hello,
I’m new at this forum and I don’t know if this is the right place to ask, but I hope it is ok.
The question is a little bit complicated, so I will divide it in two points:
1) I’ve bought one external 1TB HD and I plugged it in my Macbook via USB to use it with the Time Machine for Back-up, when I did it the Time Machine took care of it, formatted it to be useable and everything works fine; besides the back-up, I put in the external HD other files to be use that were not in the MacBook. The problem is: when I connect the same external HD to be use as well in one PC, doesn’t matter the OS (XP, Vista, etc), nothing appears, not even the drive itself, is it possible to solve it?
2) After a while, I decided to “upgrade” my back-up with the same external HD doing it wireless via Airport Extreme, I had some problems at the beginning with the first back-up, velocity of connection (still have) and so on, but in the end it is working acceptable. The problem is: as it created another backup modus (before was a direct folder structure and now it is a “disc Image”) all of sudden my external drive is full, just 50Gb free, I’ve checked it using even “JDiskReport 1.3.1” and “OmniDiskSweeper-1.7.1”, the “disk image” shows 0kb and the other files about 300Gb, my first back-up via USB I deleted, but nothing changed and the second via wireless connection should not have more than 200Gb (the first back-up that takes two days to do it was 130Gb), and it is not more than 1 month and no “big” file was add to my MacBook since then. P.S.: I still can not see the files at the PC via network.
Sorry for this complicated question, but these are two questions that I need your support, if possible.
Thank you in advance,
Clayton

Not a good idea. Time Machine works best if it has it's own, exclusive space (see #3 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.)
The problem is: when I connect the same external HD to be use as well in one PC, doesn’t matter the OS (XP, Vista, etc), nothing appears, not even the drive itself, is it possible to solve it?
Alessandro is correct; your drive is now formatted for a Mac, and Windoze can't use it.
You can, however, use part of your disk with Windoze. You need to make another partition on it, formatted +FAT 32.+ Both Windoze and Macs can read or write to it (although there is a 4gb limit on file sizes).
See the instructions in #6 of the FAQ Tip; it shows how to add a TM partition to a disk that already has data on it, but you can use the same procedure to add a +FAT 32+ partition to your TM disk.
2) After a while, I decided to “upgrade” my back-up with the same external HD doing it wireless via Airport Extreme, I had some problems at the beginning with the first back-up, velocity of connection (still have) and so on, but in the end it is working acceptable. The problem is: as it created another backup
Yes, that's correct, too. When Time Machine does backups to a Time Capsule, or a USB drive attached to an Airport Extreme, it puts them in a sparse bundle; when backups are done to an internal drive or an external attached directly, they're in a normal folder. So TM started over with a new, full backup. I'm not sure just why this is done differently, but there must be a good reason why Apple needed it. The two setups are not compatible; you're going to have to do it one way or the other.
You can speed up the initial backup by connecting to your AEBS via an Ethernet cable; that will go in a sparse bundle, then you can run backups wirelessly and they'll be added to the sparse bundle.
But you do need to know that Apple does not officially support doing backups that way: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2038, although many of us (including me) are doing it anyway.
Since you're just getting started, your best bet is probably to completely erase and reformat your drive, per #5 of the FAQ Tip.
You'll need 2 or 3 partitions; one for Time Machine.
Then either one for the additional files mentioned earlier, on a +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ partition; and a second to use with Windoze, formatted +FAT 32;+ or a single +FAT 32+ partition for both.
Two more considerations: be sure to allocate enough space in your Time Machine partition (see #1 of the FAQ Tip), and be sure to have some other way to back-up those other files.

  • Deleting files from macbook after time machine back up

My macbook's hard drive is almost full so I bought an external hard drive. I used the time machine to back up my hard drive. My intention was to delete some files (photos, video and music) from my macbook to free up space but I read from the FAQs that I am not supposed to do that. How then can I free up space on my macbook's hard drive?
    Thanks.

You can delete files from your hard drive to free up space, but within the month those files will also be removed from your TM backup. If you want to save the files you would delete, then you need to save them in some other free storage space, but do not use TM. TM's backups are dynamic and change with the changes on your hard drive. They are not a substitute for permanent storage space.
You might consider partitioning the backup drive and using one of the partitions for TM and the other for permanent storage. Be clear that you should allocate about twice the capacity of your hard drive to the TM partition.

  • External hard drive not recognized after time machine locked up

I was backing up to an external hard drive (300GB Western Digital) and time machine locked up. I had to shut down the computer and restart. Now the external hard drive does not show up on the desktop?
I can see it in disk utility but I am not able to mount or unmount the disk, I keep getting an error that the disk is in use. I tried to erase/reformat the disk and no luck.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for the help

this is often the easiest and eliminates any "busy drive" problems. what's wrong with booting from the install DVD? takes a couple of minutes.
My main hard drive is OK... the drive that I am having problems with is an external hard drive that I was using to back up my lap top. I just want to get the external drive reformatted, but disk utility will not erase it. I get an error that disk utility shut down, "please check the drive and make sure that the drive is not in use or programs are still running"
Is their a way to do a hard or forced reformatting of an external hard drive, I don't care about the information on the drive
I also tried disk warrior to recover the info on the disk and all it does is crash my mac pro????
    Thanks again for the help

  • Files not visible after Time Machine restoring

    Hi,
I've had some problems with my Mac and decided to format the hard drive. After the formatting I tried to restore some of the older folders from the Time Machine backup disk. The program copied them onto the harddrive without any problems and when I look at how much space is left it's obvious that they are there but I can't see them. I've also tried to restore some small documents but the same problem occurs, they are invisible! They don't show up when I search for them either.I would be very happy if someone could help me out!! Thanks a lot!

Thanks a lot Pondini!! Different name of the user account was the problem. I changed it back to the previous name and the problem was solved
    Yay!
The reason for the formatting was that I've had problems during the starting up for quite some time. The start up process didn't go any further than the grey backdrop. After the 30th attempt or something the computer started up. I've tried to solve the problem in several ways but without any success. At first I thought that there were some hardware problems but the formatting did the thing. My computer works fine now!! Thanks again!
If such a thing happens again, don't jump immediately to the most drastic solution.
It's very rare that a complete erase is required on OSX.
Simply reinstalling OSX is far simpler. You've posted in the Leopard forums -- in that case you'd do an +*Archive and Install, preserving users and settings.+* If you're on Snow Leopard as your signature says, you'd just do an Install. Afterwards, you'd download and install the "combo" update to get back to the correct version of OSX.
Neither will affect your data. The main difference is, the Archive & Install leaves a +Previous System+ folder on your Mac that you need to delete when you're sure you don't need anything from it; the Snow Leopard Install doesn't.

  • Storage capacity after iOs 5.0.1?

Hi everyone, I updated my iPod touch 4, 64g model with iOs 5, the battery life *****, and noticed that the  disk capacity diminished from 59 to 58 gigs (this doesn't include the ''other'' folder) I mean the overall storage capacity of the ipod. Should I  update to iOs 5.0.1? for battery life, is it really worth it? And another question is what's the real storage capacity after iOs 5.0.1? I hope some of you guys who have already updated your ipod 4 64g can help me decide. What's your experience? Should I do the OTA update or over iTunes?
    Thanks!!!

The storage capacity on my iPhone 4S with IOS 5.0.1 is 57.4GBs. As you know, this is the formatted capacity of the device. The raw storage is 64GBs but you'll never get this with any operating system (e.g. 'droid) b/c no OS is 100% efficient between formatted and unformatted capacities. The used 6.6GBs may also include IOS and 92 Apps but I cannot verify it.
On the other hand I "lost" only 700MBs on my MPB hard-disk once it was formatted. So there's something inefficient or something I cannot account for in my iPhone 4S.

  • HT201250 After Time Machine has backed up my files, can I delete my originals from my Mac and do something in Time Machine to ensure it will never automatically delete them from the backup in the future?

I'm new to using Time Machine - I'm making my first backup right now - and I have a few concerns.
So let's say my precious photos are taking up most of my Mac's hard drive space. I back them up with Time Machine on an external hard drive. After that, I want to delete my photos from my Mac because I want more space and my photos are now stored in the external hard drive. I have a few questions about that.
First, does Time Machine's backup system follow the same concept as having extra storage (so would this be a reasonable decision to make)?
Second, if it does, then could I access/open these photos from Time Machine's backup anytime I want?
Third, would I need to use the restore backup function of Time Machine every time I want to open my photos are there alternative ways of accessing my photos, like through opening directory paths to the photos?
Lastly, when the external hard drive becomes full and Time Machine wants to delete my oldest backup files, what can I do to ensure that these photos will never get deleted unless I manually do it? Like, is there a way to lock and secure these files? Or, is it like if these photos are the only copies saved in the backup, I can rest assure that Time Machine will never delete them?
    Thanks

Since my new external hard drive is have a lot of space, I'm thinking of splitting it for Time Machine and external storage.
This is a common mistake and I highly advise against it.
1: TimeMachine saves states of changes and thus requires more room on the TM drive than the boot drive it's backing up.
2: Something happens to the TM drive, loss, theft, dropped, power surge, etc., you lose both backups.
3: The storage drive might become a portable need, with it being on the TM drive, now your increasing the risk to the TM backup that something could happen to it along with the storage drive, due to increased movement.

  • After Time Machine backs up my file vault files (after logging out), when I next log into the user account it beachballs permanently during log in.

After Time Machine backs up my file vault files (after logging out), when I next log into the user account it beachballs permanently during log in.  The backup was successful, as I had to restore after this issue last time.  Hard resetting doesn't resolve the issue.  Is there a Time Machine setting that I should be aware of?
I have 2011 13" MBP, 10.6.8 and use an external hard drive connected via USB for my Time Machine backups.
    Thanks

I was able to get it to work.  Thanks for your help.  It's unfortunate the two applications do not work well together.  This is what I did:
    1) Safe boot and logged into the affected user (since the whole issue damaged the account's system settings).
    2) Turned off File Vault in System Preferences. I needed to make some space on the hard drive first since apparently the total free space on the hard drive has to equal or exceed the amount of data currently in the file vault.  I deleted some files and moved others to the Admin account.  This whole process took awhile.
    3) Finally, just restarted and logged in.  The next time machine backup seems to be a significant backup, I assume because it's backing up the user account in a different way now that File Vault is turned off.
    Thanks again!

  • Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule?

Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule via the USB port?  My current Time Machine has a total capacity of 1TB.  I'd like to double or triple its memory.  I don't want to use the external hard drive in lieu of the Time Capsule hard drive.  I'd like to use it in addition to.  Just don't know if/how it's possible.
This is another one of those questions that I've searched the web for answers, and have gotten tricky answers back.  So now I'm trying to introduce a clean slate to the mix.
    Thank you for your time!

Well, what you mentioning is possible.  However, I don't know whether it's supported (as in, "easy to set up.").  Time Machine officially supports backing up to a locally attached drive, to a machine running a Time Machine server (i.e. running OS X Server software), and to a Time Capsule.  I don't know that it officially supports a drive attached to an AirPort or to a Time Capsule.  Though I know some people have gotten it to work.
Best I can say is to try it.  Plug the drive into the Time Capsule, ensure it's shared on the network, and then try and set it as a backup target from a machine in the Time Machine backup panel (you'll need to ensure it's mounted first).  If it works, you're all set.

  • Desktop files frozen after Time Machine Backup

When I get home and plug my Mac Book Pro into the external hard drive time machine starts up and backs up. After time machine is finished I cannot click on any of the icons on my desktop. I have to switch to the login window (i don't actually have to log out, just switch to the window like I am changing users) and then login in again and everything is back to normal. If it doesn't happen on the first back up it happens on one of the subsequent ones.
I have the exact same configuration at home and at work so I my guess is the problem I am having is time machine because it only happens at home when my external hard drive is plugged in. It has never happened at work.
    Any ideas?

I have the same issue, but I don't know it it's related to time machine. Perhaps. It happens after I disconnect my USB hub at work (including the TM backup disk). I assumed it was related to this, but maybe it's TM backup. I usually force quit finder, but maybe your "solution" is better.

So, is this "feature" new? I was able to complete backups this way just a few weeks ago (prior to an upgrade).
Prior to the initial release of the 1G AEBSn, Apple hinted that support for Time Machine with AirPort Disks was going to be implemented, but it never came about even with the latest generation (5G) of these models.
If one wants to use Time Machine via wireless, must I use Time Capsule?
Basically, yes. However, the are other TM backup destinations that are supported that can be used besides the TC. A number of NAS manufacturers provide TM backup support with their products.

  • External disk attached to APE - does Time Machine work with it?

    Hi everyone,
I'm interested in getting the AirPort Extreme (802.11n) for a few reasons, but notably to attach an external disk and use it with Time Machine.
I've heard mixed results, however, about whether this is possible or not. After some Google-ing I've discovered this feature was initially not available for the official release of Leopard, but was re-introduced in 2008 sometime as a software update. But after reviewing the product page, it makes no mention to Time Machine and it's ability to backup to external AirPort disks. Only the Time Capsule product page gets this kind of treatment.
So the question is... does Time Machine play nicely with AirPort disks or not? I was hoping you guys would be able to debunk the myths so I can get a straight-forward answer so I can make a decision on if I'll purchase it or not.
And while on the topic... can multiple people use the external AirPort disk at the same time? For example, I currently have a DIR-628 router (which I'll be taking back if Time Machine plays nicely with AirPort disks) and with the silly proprietary software from D-Link, it only lets one computer use it at one time, having each user remember to connect and disconnect each time they want to use it to share files or backup using Time Machine. Not a biggie, but kind of annoying.
Thanks for any help I receive, I really appreciate it!

    Duane wrote:
As I said above, Apple does not officially support this operation. So if you have any problems or questions about using the disk with Time Machine, Apple will not provide support.
True and correct. This is likely because of their misguided SOX interpretation, which they seem to think precludes the addition of features not available at sale time through firmware updates.
Sort of like putting a diesel engine in a Toyota Prius. You may be able to do it but it is not officially supported.
It’s really nothing like that at all.
To answer the OP, yes, you can. I’ve been backing up my machine to a disk attached to my AEBS since the day the firmware supported it, and it works great for me.

So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up.  Instead, it took 30 minutes.  That can't be right.  I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that.  Please help.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • Is there a way to put system to sleep after Time Machine runs?

I don't need to run Time Machine every hour, especially since my TM disk is on Firewire and not built in (had a disk fail with TM volume on same disk - bad idea)

I have not seen one, and that is exactly how I use TM. Unmount, turn off the drive. Turn on the drive, the backup volume mounts automatically and TM resumes its scheduled backups.
Your Console logs will reveal the times in which TM attempted to back up but could not find the device:

The last entry will repeat every hour, until it finds the TM device. Its normally scheduled activity will resume when it does.

Could you explain a little more about what you meant by this? The update to 10.6.1 should not corrupt an otherwise OK HD. It is probably worth the effort to try to figure out what caused this in case it is something that would continue to affect the HD's after the restore.
