Vizio 26" LCD - Is this a bad choice?

I am pretty used to working on my 3 year old MacBook Pro 17" laptop and recently bought a MacPro (2008) I've been looking at different monitors and originally didn't like the "glossy" display coating that the new laptops had... BUT for my MacPro I'm in a dark room with no windows so I've changed my mind. I do professional graphics and photography but just can't afford a 30" Apple Display...
I recently bought the Vizio 26" LCD at this link for $350 to "try it out"
http://tinyurl.com/n9p2qx
I was surprised that I kind of like the size and quality of the image...
SO... I really don't understand all of the TN TFT jargon. Is this a bad monitor for any reason and I just don't know it because I'm used to working on my "dull and small" laptop monitor.
1. WHAT ARE the BEST bang for the buck monitors above 24" that I should consider and why?
2. WHAT is the "technical term" for the difference that I see when I look at this Vizio monitor vs it's duller LCD counterparts?
Thanks!

If you are doing pro graphics then I assume you make a living doing this and also have your work printed professionally - ie, on a Heidelberg or other offset printers. If so, you will see how the Vizio is useless for this work.
I deal with many top class printers and if you visit their production department like I do, you see many 23-24 inch Apple displays (not the new LED backlits). These displays can be calibrated with 3rd party hardware-software color calibrators (I use a Kodak method because my main printers uses this). I produce magazines from start to finish and I soft-proof the pages on my 23 inch Apple display - it is perfect. What I see on my display (the digital proof from my printer) matches what will be printed and most important, matches the display at my printer. We are on the same page so to speak.
You may also see other expensive displays - Barco monitors for example, used for graphics work.
These are all calibrated. Simple calibration starts with Apple's Colorsync set up.
Apple's 30 inch display cannot be calibrated by our Kodak system - it is not in their tables or list of approved displays - thats why we are using 23 inch displays.
Also why are you in a dark room? This is not good for graphic work. A dull room fine - no harsh lighting and no flourescents, no spots, etc.
This still applies if your work is only with websites, because these are usually seen on computersa nd still need to be within the correct gamut and Luts. I would read up on Colorsynch and color gamut for the particluar work you do.
Now if you are working only in video or entertainment that is different.

  • For SD camcorder are miniDV tape and Firewire bad choices?

    I just purchased a camcorder (Panasonic SDR_H40) which appears incompatible with iMovie HD 6, so I am going to return it. I currently have iMovie HD 6.0.3 and will probably stay with that version (based on some discussions on this site). I was going to buy a miniDV tape camcorder but they seem hard to find and the salesman said that this format was becoming obsolete. Also other discussions on this site suggest that Apple may be phasing out Firewire. Assuming that I can find a SD miniDV camcorder, presumably with a Firewire output, is this a bad choice for a camcorder? I'd appreciate any help.
    Tricia

    for 'Standard' (=not HiDef) video, miniDv is still an excellent choice:
    ° less compression => excellent pic quality
    ° no limitation in 'disk space' => insert new tape = another 13GB/60min recording time..
    ° easy/convenient long term storage of 'raw data' => keep the tapes
    ° 100% compatible with iMovie 6 and other versions..
    prob here: actual consumer MacBooks lack a fw-port => miniDV import is via fw only.
    your options: use your 'old' Mac; use a MacMini; use a MacPro ...
    nobody can tell you about 'phasing' of fw on Macs .. +'we don't comment on future products'+ ..

  • MacMini Output to Vizio 42" LCD TV

    I recently purchased a Vizio 42"LCD 1080p set and have been having issues with my MacMini displaying on the TV. I cannot get the video output to the set no matter what I try. I've even tried my Corei7 Macbook Pro and still nothing. I have tried both the mini display port and the mini dvi on the MacMini. There have been moments where I've got the picture to flicker on and the TV actually registers in the display preferences but nonetheless still nothing. I've tried 480p all the way up the 1080p setting. I've tried different cables and all I can think of. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm running 10.6.5 on both machines and have tried cleaning both systems still to no avail. Thanks for your help and hope this problem can be solved.

    David-
    Thanks for the help. I've tried 3 different cables so not sure its the cable...I guess it could be but 3 bad cables would be odd. When I did get the TV to appear in both the display options and in SwitchRes I was of course able to choose a variety of resolutions and I tried all ranging from 480 to 1080p. Of course they would work but then shortly the monitor went offline and that was it.
    Maybe you could help me a bit in SwitchRes. As of right now my monitor just says "Unknown Monitor" I tried creating custom resolutions but cannot choose them probably because it doesn't know the monitor??? Not sure I guess on how you exactly force the monitor to choose the preset you created. Anyway you could tell me where and how you made this work within that program? What about the 1.3a HDMI toggle does that have anything to do with the issue? I just find it weird that no mac I hook up to the TV is responding no matter what variation I try. The good thing is that SwitchRes does recognize something is plugged into the Mini unlike the Apple Display Preferences. Either way really appreciate the help. Hope I can get this sorted.

    Well, how have to determined no signal is being recieved to your mac?
    Have you got something that shows the actual signal? Or have you just been trying to control a VST? What software are you using by the way?
    I personnally went with a AKAI MPK25, because it's made already mapped for logic & ableton etc, so it just makes things incredibly easy.
    I would suggest you return it if you can as a dead unit & perhaps look at something else a bit easier?
    Otherwise, if you just want to get this working we can have a look a bit deeper.
    And driver? OS X driver?

  • MSI P67-GD65 (B3) Did I make a bad choice? I'm building a new system!

    After reading all the problems everyone seems to be having with boot problems and freezing, did I make a bad choice? Here's what I'm putting together when the parts arrive.
    It's been a few years since I built my own rig, but every pc I've ever owned I built myself except my Dell XPS 630i  (got a screaming deal).
    MSI P67-GD65 (B3)
    Intel i7-2600K unlocked and unleashed
    CORSAIR high performance Vengeance memory module 8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz 9-9-9-24, 1.5V
    Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6970 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E 1080P
    Western Digital Caviar Black 1T Hard Drive
    Dell XPS 630i Case and Delll 750W power supply (I know I shouldn't reuse this case)
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

     "Dell XPS 630i Case~I know I shouldn't reuse this case"
     Poor case for cooling with quad CPU and higher power consuming VGA card as you sure will end up with high temperature problems. It would be wise to get a better case.

  • French è in modified files name is a bad choice (french version)

    French version.
    As Photoshop Album, LR add a suffix with an è (the long french world Modifié) to file name when you mofify an image with external editor Photoshop.
    It is a bad choice to add an accentuated character (è) to a file name. When you publish picture on the Web. Many Web softwares or Internet Web sites providers, dont make any différence between e and è, so links can be broken. For instance, you can get è in HTML link (if you use an french HTML editor) but e in file name on provider disk.
    It would be much better to apply a shorter suffix, with no localized specific character : bis, alt, supp, corr...

    't Was the GREP styles ... It wasn't even as if they were that complex, but they did add a layer of complexity by adding No-Breaks (and not even to much text either).[*]
    Rather than temporarily removing the NoBreak in the applied character style, I just deleted all GREP styles from my paragraph styles. But it doesn't matter which temporary solution I choose, because any global change in the styling will have the text re-flown. However, I can live with that if it means I can get the work done in one day instead of ten.
    [*] After reading Uwe's links (in German): it's not because of my particular application of No Break. It seems Extreme Slow-Down occurs as soon as you apply a GREP style to an element that occurs a lot; the contents of the GREP seems not to matter.

    [After I killed off the GREP styles for foreign language alphabets and special characters, I found that the mentioned slowdown factor of 5-10x was even understated. Only now InDesign again shows it can fly. Work is fun again.]

  • If i unplug my iphone while its "updating software" will it restore the old software? or is this a bad idea?

    if i unplug my iphone while its "updating software" will it restore the old software? or is this a bad idea?

    It's a bad idea. It *ought* to recover OK, but there are too many cases where it hasn't to be safe assuming that it will.
    If, as Changren Yong says, you have a good backup, you always have the safety net of a restore, but it's a silly thing to do,
    My advice when doing software updates is to download separately then update (you're always offered an option to download only). You can do what you like during the download, which is always the ling part of the process for me. The update usually (for me) only takes about 5 minutes.
    One further point - in case you didn't know, you can initiate a backup by right-clicking the phone in iTunes and choosing Backup from the drop-down. That should always be part of your update process

  • Bad Choice for Fatal1ty

    If you bought a set of the original Fatal1ty headphones with the huge comfortable earpads and the permanent swinging mic boom.....your one of the lucky ones like me. But if you like my wife waited a few months and purchased (online from Creative as we did both times) the Fatal1ty set Creative now sells........Bummer for you! The set they now sell is poorly engineered and has all sorts of problems. The parts are thinner, internal wiring is not shielded, workmanship is lacking all together, thus pressing the internal wiring over each other and pressed together when the earpc cover is screwed down. The wiring connections are made with glue not mineral (solder) and easily fall apart if left laying in a warm spot....say on top of your PC. Creative come on guys, who's the QC dude and what's he doing. Bad Choice for Fatal1ty product line. Or was that the idea all along? To sucker us!

    Hi,
    Pls refer to my reply in your other post.
    Cheers.

  • Would a new LCD fix this problem?

    Below is a picture I made to show what my screen looks like.
    http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/2388/iphonescreen.png
    Ignore that light gray "line" that runs through the middle. That is a crack, and its not noticeable at all so I could care less.
    My real issue is the huge blobs of gray shown on the top left and bottom right corners. They take up lots of space, and cover up keys. I'm sure you can all guess that I dropped my phone, and the lines appeared and began growing rapidly. So would replacing the LCD solve this problem?

    Yes

  • Mac Pro GeForce 7300GT & Vizio VX37L LCD?

    Hi all -
    I just got my new Mac Pro with the GeForce 7300GT video card, and I'm trying to hook it up to my Vizio 37" LCD (which is a 1080i HDTV).
    Connecting to the Vizio thru the VGA/RGB connection only allows max resolution of 1366x768. Does anyone know of a way to get greater resolutions on the Vizio LCDs? For a screen that size, 1366x768 seems awfully low.
    Thanks for any help or advice!

    The Vizio only has a 1366 x 768 display. It is not a true 1080 HDTV. You can't get any higher resolution. If it has DVI or HDMI inputs, they might give a bit sharper picture. (Use a DVI to HDMI cable for the HDMI input.)
    For a screen that size, 1366x768 seems awfully low.
    That's the difference between a TV and a computer monitor. The TV is designed to be viewed from a greater distance.

  • Macbook, Mini DVI to Composite/S-Video and Vizio 32" LCD.  HELP: Resolution

    So I bought this adapter to hook-up my LCD TV to the Macbook, and I cannot get the correct resolution for this TV.
    "32" HD 1366 x 768 native LCD HDTV" is the Specs.
    NOW, I did download SwitchResX, but was unsuccessful in registering the custom 1366 x 768 resolution, the LCD TV simply prompts: "No Signal"
    Under 1280x768 the TV does work, but it looks blurry.
    Please Help

    The Mini DVI to Composite/S-Video is for use at standard TV resolutions, such as 640 x 480. Fo the full 1366 x 768 try using a DVI to HDMI cable with the Mini-DVI to DVI adapter

  • DataProvider.removeAll() is actually clearing out my database. This is bad.

    protected function custGrid_selectionChangeHandler(event:GridSelectionEvent):void
    {                     getDeviceByCustIDResult.token = deviceService.getDeviceByCustID(custGrid.selectedItem.cust_id);
    createDevBtn.enabled = true;
    issGrid.dataProvider.removeAll();                                                           }
    Is there any other way to clear a datagrid. Apparently clearing the dataprovider is bad.  This keeps actually removing the records in my database.
    I really need to clear that datagrid to ensure that I don't end up with orphan records in my database.

    That throws an error
    1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type String to an unrelated type mx.collections:IList
    THanks for the lead though.  On your advice I changed
    issGrid.dataProvider.removeAll();
    to
    getDevIssueResult.token = issueService.getDevIssue("0");
    You have solved it for me. I appreciate it.

  • Is it my imagination, or is this a bad idea? NTFS external as a Mac drive

    I've always heard NTFS and Mac's didn't get along too well.
    Today I found out that Seagate is selling NTFS drives as "Mac" drives. Here's a link to their spec sheet:
    http://www.seagate.com/www-content/product-content/backup-plus-fam/backup-plus-d esk-mac-v2/en-us/_amer/docs/backup-plus-desk-mac-v3-ds1759-6-1312us.pdf
    Am I crazy or does that sound like a really bad idea.
    I keep reading about all the "problems" with external drives and Mavericks and everyone is blaming the OS,which now has me wonderiing just exactly what other stunts some of these drive makera are pulling.
    Better yet, why can't Seagate format the drive in an HFS format and sell it like that. IMHO this almost makes no sense!

    Mac OS X can read NTFS drives, but cannot write to them without third-party drivers. So unless for some reason you need the drive as NTFS for use with Windows systems, in which case I'd recommend ExFAT rather than NTFS, then yes, it's a bad idea. If you get a drive formatted as NTFS and you will use it only with a Mac, just reformat it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    As to why Seagate does that, I'm sure it's because they sell far more aftermarket drives to Windows users than they do to Mac users, so they choose the format that will suit the majority of their customers.
    Regards.
