VLAN info across a Point-to-Point WAN circuit

What is the best way to temporarily pass VALN info across a Point-to-Point T1 WAN circuit. Here is a simple layout:
I have a 355012G at the Corporate Core with several VLANs for domain login, IP phones, file servers, printers, etc. I have a remote location that is currently getting the VLAN info across a wireless bridge (2 1300s and a 3500XL switch at the remote warehouse. The customer wants to connect the remote site with a Point-to-Point T1 and a new 35660 switch as follows:
MAIN-------------------------------------------REMOTE
355012G---e---3560R--------P-to-P------2610R--e--3560
What would be the best design / config scenario for passing the CORE VLAN info across the WAN P-to-P?
I was thinking bridging?
Any thoughts?

I have been thinking about this for a while and I can't find a way to do it. I know you can do embedded trunks but that is not what you are asking to do. The only alternative you have is to bridge the traffic.
Sorry can't be more helpful than that but since no one else has responded I figured I would giev my 2 cents for what it might be worth.

Turns out the mistake was not adding a mask to the subnet. Ex:
    Router_2(config_router)# network 192.168.0.0 0.0.255.255
    Router_2(config_router)# network 172.27.0.0 0.0.255.255
Doing that on both routers made the hosts capable of pinging each other.
    Thanks for the tips everyone

  • BR1310 Wireless Point-to-Point Bridge

I recently configured two BR1310 Access Point/Bridges into a Root & Non-Root (without clients) configuration to extend a LAN to another building. I configured the units to use LEAP (Root acting as Radius server), authenticating with Network-EAP w/ WPA2, and AES as the encryption cipher. Being that WPA2/LEAP handle the key management, I had a question regarding best practices. I currently have configured a "dot1x timeout reauth-period" of 300 seconds, in addition a broadcast-key change of the same. I have 4 VLANs trunked over this bridge, and since I have no wireless clients associating with these bridges, I'm assuming I do not need the broadcast-key rotation. The idea is that by forcing a dot1x reauth, a new PTK/PMK will be created every 300 seconds. Is that a recommended practice?
Also, being that I have 4 VLANs trunked across these bridges, is there a way to verify (via debug?) that all VLANs traffic is being encrypted by AES? Obviously when I do a "show dot11 assoc all", only my native VLAN (mgmt) shows as AES, no other VLANs.
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hello,
it normal that you only see with "sh dot11 ass .." the native vlan. On this vlan (infratstructure) will be realize the authentication and encryption. That means not,
all other vlan,s are not encrypted !! Of course they are, because the vlan,s will be "transport" sequential in the AES encrypted connection. You can by the way see this with a WLAN-ANALYSOR.
The timeouts (reauth-period) not so low I use 10000 sec. It is not mor secure If you so often reauthenticate the session.
A Cisco staff had by my customer configured 40000 sec. A good choice is once per day.

  • MPLS vs Point-to-Point over Citrix Performance Difference

We run Citrix at our remote locations. We have two circuits at each location. One is a point to point for backup and the other is an MPLS circuit that is our primary. Both circuits are T-1 speeds.
We have all thin clients at our remote locations. When communication goes through the point to point circuit it utilizes much more bandwidth. Maybe 1.2 Mbps on average but when we communication through the MPLS circuit only 800 Kbps of bandwith is actually being used.
Can anyone explain this? I was thinking that maybe MPLS does a faster job of switching the packets across the WAN and that the Citrix does not need to use as much bandwidth because of this. This analyis was completed across all of our sites and in each case Citrix uses more bandwidth on a point-to-point vs an MPLS circuit. I have not had any users complain when accessing either ciruits.
What do you think is causing this?

    Hi,
I fully agree with Swaroop. Being an instructor teaching many MPLS classes I was frequently confronted with the opinion MPLS is "faster" as it is "switching". This is not true and I always countered this - provocantly - stating that MPLS is reducing throughput, so it is slower! What I mean writing this: given a certain topology for IP forwarding and turning on MPLS on it will increase the overhead (additional overhead by adding labels) and thus reduce end to end IP throughput. The lookup is done by the same algorithm (CEF) at wire speeds for IPv4 and labeled packets - there is no speed gain for either technology.
Do not get me wrong, this does not mean MPLS is "bad" and in fact the difference between pure IPv4 forwarding and MPLS forwarding is marginal and most likely irrelevant for any real environment. The advantages of MPLS are plenty and thus a marginal throughput difference is not the most important thing to consider.
I guess the idea of "switching is faster than routing" stems from the fact that there were times, when IPv4 forwarding ("routing") was done in CPU, thus was slow, whereas L2 forwarding ("switching") was done in hardware and thus was faster. It dates back to those days where we used AGS+ (an old router, which is EOS, EOL and most likely even EOeBay ;-) and f.e. Cat5000.
Now coming back to the observed behaviour in the original post there might be some reasons to explain it:
    1) different L2 overhead as pointed out by Swaroop, especially as I would assume rather small average packetsizes.
    2) Additional traffic on the P2P link not sent through the MPLS cloud - check your routing, if it is exactly the same for both links.
    3) Measurement artefacts - as Swaroop pointed out. Is the load interval the same for both interfaces? I would rather use a packet analyzer than only go for a "show interface" to get precise values.
    Hope this helps!
    Regards, Martin

  • Voice vlan priority across wireless bridge network

    Hello,
If you have a separate voice vlan across a wireless bridged network, how could you configure qos to put the entire voice vlan in priority over the data vlan ?
    Thanks.

    Hi Antonis,
    Have a look at these docs. Hopefully they will help get you started;
Cisco Aironet 1300 Series Outdoor Access Point/Bridge Software Configuration Guide, 12.3(4) JA
    Chapter 14 - Configuring QoS
This chapter describes how to configure quality of service (QoS) on your access point/bridge. With this feature, you can provide preferential treatment to certain traffic at the expense of others. Without QoS, the access point/bridge offers best-effort service to each packet, regardless of the packet contents or size. It sends the packets without any assurance of reliability, delay bounds, or throughput.

    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5861/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00804158a6.html
    Giving Priority to Voice Traffic
This section demonstrates how you can apply a QoS policy to your wireless network's voice VLAN to give priority to wireless phone traffic.
In this example, the network administrator creates a policy named voice_policy that applies voice class of service to traffic from Spectralink phones (protocol 119 packets). The user applies the voice_policy to the incoming and outgoing radio ports and to the outgoing Ethernet port for VLAN 77.
Use the Apply Policies to Interface/VLANs drop-down menus to apply policies to the access point Ethernet and radio ports. If VLANs are configured on the access point, drop-down menus for each VLANs' virtual ports appear in this section. If VLANs are not configured on the access point, drop-down menus for each interface appear.

  • WLC code for point to point bridging

What is the best WLC code for point to point and point to multipoint bridging on a 2504 with 2602 APs? 7.2-7.4 had transparent vlan issues and I'm not sure if they were fixed in 7.5-7.6. We have 5-6 vlans that we are needing to bridge between a large open area. Also, are there any bugs with wireless mesh and ISE?

You do not have many choices now, only 7.0.250.0, 7.4.121.0 & 7.6.110.0 codes are supported by Cisco. All other codes have been deferred by them.
I do not have configured those set-up to advise you specific to that. I would think 7.6.110.0 may have fixed whatever the known bugs in previous versions.

  • RV082 DMZ Configuration Question - Point to Point

    Hello,
We have 2 offices in different countries both using the RV082 router.  Currently both offices have an internet connection on WAN1 and that is working fine.
We are adding a Point to Point circuit between the two offices, and my question is on the RV082 configuration on each side.
I was going to configure WAN2 in DMZ mode on each router, then connect the point to point circuit to the WAN2 port.  On the China side, the DMZ IP will have to be a private address (192.168.177.1), while the DMZ port on the San Diego side will be a public IP.
We need internal computers to be able to go to the internet normally through WAN1, but also go through WAN2 if they are trying to reach the other network.  I will be adding routes on each RV082 for this.
Is there anything wrong with this configuration?  Do I need to change the routers from Gateway to Router mode?  Does it matter if the DMZ WAN2 port has a private IP address?
Any advice or tips are greatly appreciated!
    Thank you in advance,
    Eric

Thanks Tom but that thread is not exactly what I was looking for.  Mainly I just want to know if the RV082 can act as a fully functioning router with the two WAN ports going to different networks.  So the LAN side would hit the router, look at the routing table and know which WAN port to go out of.  Using the DMZ seems like it will work, but I have never tried it so I wanted to throw it out there and see if anyone has done this before.

  • NME-WAE-502 for point to point ?

Can I use two NME-WAE-502 for a point-to-point WAN, one as edge and one as core ?
Is it also possible to use them without the Central-Manager ?
    Thanks !

    Hello Daniele,
    here are my comments:
Can I use two NME-WAE-502 for a point-to-point WAN, one as edge and one as core ?
There is no restriction where to install them but these are design mainly for branch offices, my suggestion is to give your best guess and estimate number of users, applications, bandwidth and take the time to check the design guides as well. Request assistance to your Cisco Partner too.
    some details about the module:
    NME-WAE-502
    Max Optimized TCP Connections: 500
    Max CIFS Sessions: 120
    Max Recommended WAN Link [Mbps]:4
further details can be found on the design guide
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Data_Center/WAASDC11.html
Is it also possible to use them without the Central-Manager ?
WAAS continues to function in the event  of CM failure, but you  need it for configuration changes, monitoring, statistics, software updates...etc.
    hope that helps,
    Felix

I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
I am having difficulty finding documenation on hwo to properly configure Cisco 1552e AP's in Autonomous Mode as Point to Point wireless bridges with just utilizing the wireless link as a backhaul, not client access. We have to go with autonomous because we plan on having Local Mode ap's (CAPWAP) terminated behind the MAP ethernet bridged port. Here is our topology:
Local Network (Controller resides on this network)   ---------> L2 Switch ----------> RAP --------> wireless bridge <---------- MAP <----------> L2 Switch ----> Clients\CAPWAP AP's (servicing clients)
We want to pass all the VLANs we will need for both the wired network and CAPWAP network.
    Thoughts?

This is extremely useful and the exact configuration we are looking to do.
Is there a limit on the number of Bridge-Groups that can be used (essentially number of VLANs)?
Also are you familiar with running Mesh AP's in autonomous mode? Do we lose any features other than management by moving them from CAPWAP to Autonomous?
We have to run these in autonomous because our MAP end will run 3602i local mode APs, so lame that Cisco wont support Capwap over CAPWAP based mesh bridge.

You will need a switch at each location for the IP phones to connect to the network. Preferably, you would have a switch capable of delivering power to the phones, such as the Catalyst 3560-24PS. You will need either Callmanager or Callmanager Express for call processing. Callmanager Express can run on your 2801 and will support up to 240 phones. Callmanager is a much more scalable product and runs on separate server hardware. Depending on the number of lines at each location you will need a VWIC card in each router to support local dial tone. Examples are the VWIC-1MFT-T1 for PRI and the VIC2-2FXO or VIC2-4FXO for analog lines. You will also need to take bandwidth into consideration. G.711 calls take approximately 80k and G.729 calls take approximately 24k. 2 G.711 calls would take up the entire circuit. If you're going to be running several calls across this link as well as data, you will need to consider increasing the link speed. Also, Callmanager Express has no provision for Call Admission Control. CAC is the ability to limit the number of calls across a given link in order to avoid quality degradation. You will want to employ QoS mechanisms so that voice traffic gets preferential treatment no matter how much bandwidth you have. Take a look at the Qos link below for an overview. The configuration required would get quite lengthy for this post, but the admin guide below will give you a good place to start.

  • How to make a Line Chart curved instead of straight from point-to-point?

I have a Line Chart that is is very jagged and plots directly from point to point, like this:
    http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/7408/testhb.jpg
But I want to achieve something that looks a bit smoother where the line instead is curved from point to point, like this:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12839_01/bi.1111/b32122/img/curvedline_graph.gif
Is this possible in Xcelsius 2008?  I couldn't find anything in the graph's properties and I also had no luck when searching google/these forums for a solution.  Thanks for the help!
