VLAN setup at home

I'm definitely out of my comfort zone here...but after reading a bit, I think a VLAN setup is what I'm after.  I'd like 2 networks at my house sharing the internet connection. One network for my computers, One network for my kids.  The purpose is security...my kids have been bringing home biological virus' since they were tiny...I'm certain they're the ones who'll let something in the house now as well.
I have a WRVS4400N small business router with VLAN capability.  I've explored the setup pages and can't make heads or tails of what I'd need to do there.  I've set up 2 BSSID's and isolated them, next I'd like to set up the vlans and assign the bssids to them. Can someone look at this setup pic and walk me through this?  I appreciate the education!
Alternatively, if vlan is not the solution for my purpose, I'm open to suggestions.  Thank you for your consideration.

  • VLAN Setup – WRT1900AC

I have a home network that includes a Windows 2012 server running Active Directory.  Because of this, I use my server to provide DHCP and DNS services on the network so I have to disable DHCP services on the WRT.  This in turn prevents me from using the Guest Network services on my WRT1900AC (which is very strange in my opinion!).  anyway…… I’m curious if I can use the VLAN features on the WRT to resolve this in some way?  Shouldn’t I be able to setup one VLAN for my home network, and a 2nd VLAN for the purposes of enabling the Guest network?

The WRT1900AC Guest Network doesn't work that why. When you enabled the WRT1900AC Guest Wireless an isolated IP Subnet is created usually 192.168.2.0 and DHCP Server configured to hand out those IP Addresses on the VWLAN Guest wireless specifically for the Guest network client devices.

  • Hardware required for RAC setup at home

    Hi All,
Could you please suggest the Hardware required for practicing RAC at home.
    Regards,
    VN

    Hi, "user7202581",
For practicing purposes, you could consider a VBox / OVM based setup at home. We have used those for Hands On Labs in the course of Oracle Open World more than once. I recommend you use a machine with at least 8GB memory and dual core (HT enabled) processors. Some configuration examples: Lenovo Laptop, ThinkPad, 8GB, 320GB HDD, i5 dual core, 2.5 GHz, Win 7 or a Mac Mini, latest version, i5 dual core, 2.3GHz and 8GB memory would do the trick for a two node cluster. Note that I mention the hosting OS in case you use VBox. For OVM based setups you either have to use a dual boot system or use a dedicated machine. You will be somewhat restricted with respect to the hardware failures you can impose on this system obviously (due to the VM setup), but for practicing purposes, you should find those environments sufficient, I think. Also see: RAC on OVM templates: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/rac-template-11grel2-166623.html
    Hope that helps. Thanks,
    Markus

  • SLM 2024 vlans setup

    Hi,
I purchased the SLM2024 switch recently, but still not able to get it works in vlans setup. Appreciate if someone can help me on this.
I have configured my router to have two vlans in two interfaces. Each vlan will serve as dhcp server with subnet .10 and .20. I would like to segregate my switch into 2 different vlans, then connect the dhcp interface from my router to each one of the vlan on my switch. So I can have two vlans on switch serve two subnets. How can I do it? I'm new to cisco product, hope someone can guide me thru the setup.
    Thanks,
    Jim

Hi Ishal, disconnect the switch from all network elements. Reboot the switch. Attach 1 computer to the switch and assign a static IP address on the 192.168.1.x subnet and try to access the switch. Ensure you do not have any wireless connection active on the computer you're using.

  • VLAN setup on SF302-08P switch

I have the following setup using two SF302-08P PoE switches:
    1st floor
    =========
    Switch #1 <-------> private network
              <-------> public network
    2nd floor
    =========
    Switch #2 <-------> private network
....    public network (visible but devices can't connect)
I have tried to make the config in switch #2 identical to switch #1, but something is still wrong.
Is this most likely a VLAN setup problem, or what?
    Thanks.
    Ken Watkins

    Tom,
Thanks so much for your help. In my case, the second VLAN is VLAN 50. Here are the pics of what I think you are talking about through the web interface. Do these look like what you are suggesting?
    Thanks again.

  • VLan setup for a 2950 and 2611

Im trying to setup a real basic VLan setup for 1 2950 switch. I would like to have 3 Vlans on it including the default Vlan. So my understanding is that for all 3 of the VLans to talk to each other I will need a router to be the layer 3 device that routes the Vlans.
On my 2611 it looks like this:
    interface Ethernet0/0
    no ip address
    full-duplex
    interface Ethernet0/0.1
    encapsulation dot1Q 1 native
    ip address 172.16.10.1 255.255.255.0
    no snmp trap link-status
    interface Ethernet0/0.2
    encapsulation dot1Q 2
    ip address 172.16.20.1 255.255.255.0
    no snmp trap link-status
    interface Ethernet0/0.3
    encapsulation dot1Q 3
    ip address 172.16.30.1 255.255.255.0
    no snmp trap link-status
Then my 2950 looks like this:
    interface FastEthernet0/1
    description Connection to router
    switchport mode trunk
    speed 10
    duplex full
    interface FastEthernet0/2
    switchport access vlan 2
    interface FastEthernet0/3
    switchport access vlan 3
    interface Vlan1
    ip address 172.16.10.2 255.255.255.0
    no ip route-cache
    ip default-gateway 172.16.10.1
Ok so as it currently stands the switch and router will not talk to each other at all. From the switch I can not ping the router and vice a versa. If I plug a laptop into one of the ports using VLan1 I can ping the switch IP 172.16.10.2 but obviously can not ping the default gateway which is the router...
I didnt think this looked very hard but for some reason it does not want to work for me at all...
    Any ideas?
    LR

I have two things you might try. First set your trunking interface on your switch to auto.
    interface fastethernet 0/1
    speed auto
    duplex auto
This will help to make sure that the ethernet on the 2611 will negotiate the duplex with the switch. I've had issues with 2611's trying to do full duplex on there ethernet ports.
Another Option turn on CDP on your router and switch and do a show cdp neighbor to make sure there plugged into the right ports.
Three you could move the vlan 1 ip address on the 2611 to the main interface. Example below. Then try pinging the switch. Your other tagged vlans should still work at that point. Also if you have multiple switches make sure to setup Vlan Trunk Protocol see NOTE A.
    no interface Ethernet0/0.1
    no encapsulation dot1Q 1 native
    no ip address 172.16.10.1 255.255.255.0
    no snmp trap link-status
    interface Ethernet0/0
    ip address 172.16.10.1 255.255.255.0
    NOTE A
Add the following commands to each switch to setup your Vlan Trunk Protocol. These are pretty much the minimum amount of commands you can use to setup VTP.
    vtp domain CISCO1
    vtp version 2

  • Best Network/Internet setup at home

Hi guys...just wondering what the best setup would be using Cisco equipment at home. I have adsl with sky and at present i connect wirelessly to the net. I would like to create a home lab for my ccnp so would like to know the best router/equipment to create a home network which will allow me to connect to the net and study for my CCNP. Any help greatly appreciated
    Sol

    Hi there,
I'm not a CCNA yet, so I don't know what's needed for the CCNP exams or labs, so take this as advice from someone who uses Cisco kit at home only!
I have a Cisco 827 (ADSL router with 4-port hub) and Cisco 1721 (modular router with two WIC slots) at home.
The 827 gives me my ADSL WAN connection and has a built-in firewall. I use a home broadband connection, so my outside IP is obtained automatically, so it has to NAT as well.
The 1721 has a WIC-1T and a WIC-1ENET - the WIC-1ENET connects to the 827, and the 1721's built-in 10/100 connects to my switch. The WIC-1T can be used to connect to another such device, so I can use it to create a DMZ. The 1721 also NATs, and has a further ACL applied to provide my home devices with extra security. My DMZ is where I experiment :)
It's a working environment (it provides my family with broadband internet access) and gives me something to study with. And, they're fanless, so they're silent - a real bonus.
I don't know your budget, so I'm going to guess and say you're not looking to buy brand-new kit; used kit can get you through your exams every bit as well as newer kit can, depending on what you buy.
The 827 is probably not the best choice to go for (although they are quite cheap on eBay). If you can, an 837, 857, 877, or (if you have the cash) an 1800-series router with ADSL WIC would be a better choice. The 857W and 877W both have built-in 802.11g WiFi as well, which is a bonus.
The 1721 is a good router, but you may be better off with a 2651 (they cost more, even used) but with two built-in FastEthernet ports and several Voice-capable WIC slots and DSP resources, you can learn about VoIP on them as well.
I also wouldn't go for any router you can't apply a 12.4 IOS image to (due to age or memory requirements) as you'll want to have the most recent command-set available to study on.
If you don't get a router with a wireless connection, there are plenty of Aironet APs on eBay as well, but the 802.11g ones tend to sell quite high. You need to look out though because some that are sold are thin APs, which require a controller (and those aren't cheap, or condusive to a home environment).
As for switching, the 2950 is a good switch as it is compact - however, if noise is a concern and you don't need any more than 8 ports, a Catalyst WS-C2940-8TT-S will do very nicely (they also support voice VLANs, 802.1Q trunking, and have a gigabit uplink, and again are fanless, so they're good for the home).
Also, you can find small Cisco PIX firewalls on eBay. They're not so common, but they do come along from time to time.
Hope this is of some help!
    Kind regards,
    Graeme

  • Wrvs4400n vlan setup

Hi, I have a linksys wrvs4400n router on which:
The wireless computers are connected to the home network (vlan 1)
Port 1 is connected to the home network (vlan 1)
Port 2 is connected to the office network (vlan 2)
And the printers are connected to port 3.
Now I'd like to setup the router in such a way that all computers have access to the printers (port 3), but I don't know what vlan settings I have to use on port 3, or if it is even possible...
I really hope someone can help me,
    merc
Message Edited by merc on 06-18-2008 06:10 AM

if you enable inter-vlan routing, that will allow all vlans to communicate with each other.
for your current setup, if your printer supports 802.1q, you could set the port where the printer is connected to to trunk and member it on vlans 2 and 3.

  • Setup a home file/Media server with no internet access

    Hi,
I have a home network with a wifi router connected to an Adsl modem. I try to setup a new server (macbook pro with Yosemite as OS) which will be only used as file and media server for my local network.
I DO NOT want this server to have access to out of my local network and no one out of my local network could access it. in other words, it has to be isolated as a local server with no incoming/outgoing access from out of my local network.
I should mention that this server can be accessed by other family members and they can setup other applications without my awareness... and I do not want to manually deny each access request (in or out) in the server's firewall and I am not always behind the server. I want to be sure that "all access" from/to out of my local network are denied.
my local network dhcp rang is 192.168.10.10 to 192.168.10.20 and I have a firewall on the router and one on this server (little snitch).
I have no idea how to do this, how to configure IPs out of my local network in the firewalls etc...
I would appreciate if anyone can help me (I have a limited knowledge about networking)
    Many thanks
    Bye

    Thanks for your reply ChuckBing.
Unfortunately I had already copied the instructions I found in the Sun documentaion to the letter and it still needed access to the internet. In the end I solved the problem by pointing the iepluginurl to a non existent file and putting a URL, pointing to an offline JRE executable on the server, as the message that appears when the applet cannot be loaded. The clients then have the choice of downloading the JRE or installing it online by clicking on the URL.
    Thanks anyway.

No  you don't need a stand alone computer. If you could let us know what you're trying to achieve we can give you some specifics. However here is a link that provides some fundamentals.
    http://macs.about.com/od/networking/qt/sharingleopard.htm
If you use Google and ask specific questions you can find plenty of information. The above article indicates how to set up sharing on a network between Macs and Windows computers. You can share file, printers, scanners etc...as you will soon discover.
