VLAN trunk over Frame Relay

I want to define a VLAN 101 within a branch office on one port of a CAT3524XL, that will in turn go to a router in that branch and be trunked back to the main office router (through a frame relay connection). Once in that main router, I want that one VLAN to specifically be directed to one of the unused ethernet interfaces and in turn to another 3500XL switch for distribution. There are already VLANs in the branch that are connected to the main office, but they all come out on the main branch router's e0/0 interface. I need to make an exception with the new VLAN 101 by forcing all VLAN 101 traffic to be on the e1/1. Please HELP!!!

Yes, my requirement is to be able to direct traffic that originated on that one VLAN to a different port on the central router, where there is a captive portal device which will manage that remote traffic. I may have used the wrong term..."trunk". I really need full visibility and control of that remote VLAN. I have other VLANS (voice, data, management) in the remote branch, and they all come back through the frame. I really need to take this particular VLAN and "point" it to the available interface in the main office. Does that sound feasible with PBR? I will read more on it.
Thanks for the info Rick. Any other ideas or help is appreciated.

  • No modem conection with voip over frame-relay

I'm trying to connect two modems through voip over frame-relay network using the modem passthrough command but that is no working. The voice calls is operating very well but the modems no connect between them. I'm using G-729 codec with ip header compression and data fragment in 80 bytes.

There are some know issues with cisco dsps and V.90+ modems, but we have been able to get most modems to work correctly accross our network. If you are using g729 for all other voice calls you will want to use the modem passthrough command to have both gw's turn to modem passthrough. I typically set up each dial peer with the specific commands, since I have found the global commands are not consistently applied. Here is a sample dial peer config....
    dial-peer voice 3 voip
    description Default voip peer
    preference 1
    incoming called-number .T
    destination-pattern .T
    progress_ind setup enable 3
    progress_ind connect enable 8
    modem passthrough nse codec g711ulaw
    voice-class codec 1
    session protocol sipv2
    session target sip-server
    dtmf-relay rtp-nte
    fax rate disable
    fax protocol pass-through g711ulaw
    ip qos dscp cs3 signaling
    no vad
Some of these commands are specific to the isdn signaling set up we have at this site. Also, we are using sip hence the sip session target. But the modem and fax passthrough commands are pretty much universal.
Also, some of those commands are not supported until 12.2.13. You might want to think about an ios upgrade.

  • Difrence between ... MPLS over Frame-Relay ATM

    Hai all,
Sorry to ask very basic quiestion ..can some one tell what is the difrnce and advantage of MPLS over ATM and Frame-Relay ......pls provide me a better link ..for refrnce
    Thanks in advance
    Lijesh

MPLS over ATM or MPLS over Frame-Relay it's not good idea, because if you use cell-mode labeling, you find someone limitation at this technology. DLCI and VPI/VCI value at this protocols it's not have large space. If you know how operate cell-mode, try to look at just for sample bits length with DLCI value at Frame-Relay protocol or VPI/VCI value at ATM protocol… Of course you can use same cheat like VCI-merge, but I think it's not very good idea.
Building new network infrastructure at this protocols it's not good idea… It's good idea to fast implement MPLS technology in old network infrastructure build with this protocols (just for sample, you can linked ATM forwarding plane and MPLS forwarding plane (in this situation you can abandon to use fixed configuration VPI/VCI for IP network and can use benefits offered ATM technology with MPLS)), but not for new network infrastructure. If you need to offer services with this protocols, you can use Any Transport Over MPLS technology.

  • Video teleconferencing over frame-relay

I have a user who requires using a polycom video teleconferencing unit at one of my sites that has a t-1 frame-relay circuit. The video is extremly choppy and sometimes completly freezes. I was wondering if there was any particular qos for frame-relay. I have no qOS at the moment. I have found some sample configs for atm and would like to see one for frame-relay. If you have any suggestions any help would be appreciated.

QoS for video over frame relay can be difficult to achieve, although Cisco provides lots of tools to do the best you can. Typically you will want to keep the video traffic within the CIR of the frame circuit. This can be done through setting the TOS bits at the Polycom unit (or through the proxy feature on the Cisco MCM) and then using CBWFQ or other prioritization schemes with the ability to set the bandwidth.
The difficult part comes in that frame-relay is a layer 2 technology and once the traffic goes into the frame-relay network, there is no prioritization of your traffic versus other customers' traffic at each FR switch. CIR will guarantee bandwidth but not necessarily delay constancy which is as important for live video.
Some other considerations might include codec selection - H.264 gives good quality at lower bitrates if your Polycom unit supports it.
    Hope this helps,
    John

  • Ipx over frame relay and route redistribution

    Hi,
When I configure ipx over frame-relay multipoint interface, I need to run eigrp and disable the split horizon, and I'm running ipx rip on the same router thus, redistribution is automatic by default. This will cause potential routing loop when the route is advertised back from the same interface. In this situation, I have few questions:
    1. How to prevent routing loop in this situation?
    2. What is the administrative distance for ipx rip, eigrp, nslp?
    3. How does eigrp and rip convert the metric?
    Thank you

  • Is Low MTU (ie 320) for VoIP over Frame-relay can be used to avoid serialization delay for large data packets?

In order to provide voice quality for VoIP, is FR fragmentation equivalent to lowering the MTU size for the serial subinterface of a Frame relay subinterface?
Is there any isues like stop communications, using Low MTU ?

If the router belongs to any of the
    platform listed below, then use
FRF12 for you fragmentation. The MTU size
lowering also works but this can cause a high over
head as it can't be specified on a per dlci level.
With multiple dlci i.e. subinterfaces use per dlci fragmentation.. this helps reduce the overhead of changing the MTU size of the physical interface.

  • Voice over Frame-Relay

    Hi,
Customer of me has several sites connected with leased lines. The leased lines have frame-relay encapsulation (frame-relay back-to-back)
The line has two pvc's configured, one for voice and one for data. The voice PVC works fine. On the data pvc we want to put some QoS.
    Here is the partial configuration:
    interface Serial0
    bandwidth 2000
    no ip address
    encapsulation frame-relay
    no ip route-cache cef
    ip route-cache flow
    no ip mroute-cache
    frame-relay intf-type dce
    interface Serial0.1 point-to-point
    ip address 10.xx.xx.1 255.255.255.252
    no ip mroute-cache
    frame-relay interface-dlci 120
    interface Serial0.2 point-to-point
    ip address 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.252
    no ip mroute-cache
    frame-relay interface-dlci 100
    class VOICE
    vofr cisco
    map-class frame-relay VOICE
    frame-relay cir 512000
    frame-relay voice bandwidth 256000
    frame-relay fragment 320
    frame-relay fair-queue
Question is can I just apply a service policy out to the data DLCI or doi i also have to enable frame-relay traffic shaping?
    Thanks,
    JH

The disadvantage of shaping is that it will actually limit you bandwidth. That is, you won't be able to use the circuit at full capacity, because of the artificial limitation induced by shaping. This is particularly true for a situation like you where the actual circuits is a leased line, and not a FR network.
A better approach would be to reconfigure for simple hdlc encap, and run VoIP instead. This way, you would have all the QOS features you need for voice and data, and be able to use the full capacity with a much simpler configuration.
Actually, even if you want to retain the FR encapsulation and the voice over FR approach, still using a single PVC would be better, for the same reasons given above.
Hope this helps, please rate post if it does!

  • PCM V.35 over Frame Relay

    Hi,
I need to connect remote sites devices that are delivering two channels voice streams in PCM format (V.35 Interface) over a frame relay network (G.703 interface on service provider side) to a central location where the PCM streams need to be archived.
Can you advise for a solution?

  • Viop over Frame Relay QOS

I'm tryint to apply qos to our frame-relay links.
    Rferencing this document
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk652/tk698/technologies_configuration_example09186a0080094af9.shtml
    I'm using software vers. 123-14.T3
The problem I am having is that when I apply frame-relay traffic-shaping to the frame-relay serial interface all my data and voice get corrupted(very choppy voice, intermittant pings, application timeouts etc.) My network essentially slows to a crawl.
This occurs before I have applied the class to the dlci.
I would assume no traffic shaping would take place until I apply a class to the frame relay dlci.
Has anyone seen this or have any suggestions?

    Hello,
The moment you apply the command "frame-relay traffic-shaping" under the frame-relay serial interface, all the sub-interfaces/DLCIs will default to 56kbps CIR, since you haven't applied the class under the DLCI yet.
Best practice is to configure a default map-class with a higher CIR and apply that under the main interface before you configure frame-relay traffic-shaping. So, if there is no class defined under any sub-interface, the DLCI will inherit the traffic shaping parameters from the class defined under the main interface. If there is a class defined under the DLCI, the traffic shaping properties from that class will take affect for that DLCI.
    Hope that helps.

  • Lost Packets in certain customer VLANs Trunked over ME

I work for a service provider that configures CPE networks for our customers. We have one customer that we are setting up a Disaster Recovery site over Metro Ethernet. The customers servers need L2 connectivity to the data center for redundancy. The customer wants their VLANs on their 4510 mirrored on a 3750 at the DR site. A gigabit ME VLAN was setup through our ME network between the 2 sites. The 3750 and 4510 were staged at the customer site and tested before the 3750 was moved to the remote DR site and connected by ME.
The 3750 and 4510 were directly connected on a dot1q trunk between the two switches. About 18 vlans are trunked between the 2 switches, about 15 of which have L3 Vlan interfaces configured.
The issue we are having is that packets are getting dropped, on certain customer vlans, but not others. All Vlans worked properly when the 3750 was directly connected to the 4510 at the datacenter.
Our network engineers in charge of the ME noticed MAC-Flap errors on ME switches at the Data Center and the DR site. It see the Mac Address of Interface Vlan 101 and Interface Vlan 318 of the 3750 switch on both the customer access port on both ME 3400 switches (uni) and the ME trunk ports (nni). No other vlans are having issues with lost packets, or connectivity.
On ME 3400 switch uni tunnel port is vlan 459. Native vlan is 540 on 3400 and is the switch mgt vlan.
Has anyone run into this before?

I think commonsense101 means the "Customer Agreement" and the following passage in particular.
"Where and How Does Verizon Wireless Service Work?
Wireless devices use radio transmissions, so unfortunately you can't get Service if your device isn't in range of a transmission signal. And please be aware that even within your Coverage Area, many things can affect the availability and quality of your Service, including network capacity, your device, terrain, buildings, foliage and weather."

  • Vlan trunk over wifi

Looking for advice on a problem we have.
We have a building with the WAN link etc. There is a separate building which is connected via a point to point wireless link.
We have Cisco 2960 switches at either end of the wireless link. The switch is divided into 2 vlans one for telephony and one for data. with links in the main building going into a netgear switch.
In the separate building we can access the data vlan but not the voice. The ports connecting to the wireless link are trunked and if I create a vlan in the main building it replicates to the separate building and the ports are a member of the correct VLAN.
I tested with the switches connected directly together and was fine so presuming something related to the wireless link, any thoughts welcome!!
    Many thanks

    I will assume the following
    1. Your data VLAN is the native VLAN on the trunk ports
With that in mind you probably have an MTU issue:
In trunk ports your native VLAN (Default VLAN 1, probably your data VLAN) will not be tagged so MTU=1500,
your voice VLAN will be tagged so MTU > 1500 and your wireless equipment can't handle >1500 MTU so it drops the packets. You can confirm this by changing the native VLAN on your trunk ports to the voice VLAN and see if it works. If that's your case then either change the MTU on your wireless equipment or use 2 wireless links in non trunk ports 1 for each VLAN.
Let me know if it works.

  • MLPPP over Frame Relay

    Hello,
We just tested MLPPP over FR on two physical FR links between two sites, each link having 2 Mbps bandwidth.I want to ask about how it will work if both links are of different bandwidth , let suppose 1 link is of 64kbps and 2nd is of 512kbps so what will happen if bandwidth utilization exceeds 64kbps.
    Regards,
    Mujeeb

The load will be shared between the links on the basis of the routing protocols ocnfigured on the router or switch.
The process of equal load balancing does not work here only unequal load balancing works.

  • Voice over Frame with FXS

I have two branch routers connected to central site over frame relay network.
Now i've put fxs cards in all three routers and want voice connectivity among all three routers.
Basically its like hub and spoke.. one central site connecting on sub-interface to two other sites on frame network.
What is the best way to configure these three routers ???
    please advice

Your requirements seem vey simple so my suggestion is to keep the configuration very simple as well. You need a dialplan which allows each site to call the other two sites.
I would suggest you use voice over ip OVER frame, rather than just voice over frame. There is a little bit more overhead, but ease of troubleshooting and configuration makes it worth it.
You need two voip dial peers at most to differntiate what destination patterns go to which site and one pots dial peer for each FXS port that you have a phone attached to.
For QOS, i suggest using frame relay traffic shaping and if necessary LLQ.
    Hope this answers your question.

  • Frame-relay packet fragmenting on a 2611

I have a 2611 router that I am prioritizing voice traffic over frame-relay. The traffic is converted to ip by a siemens phone system. I am just prioritizing the specified udp ports. I want to fragment the frame-relay packets but under the map-class statement frame-relay fragment is not a option. Should I do this somewhere else?

yeap.. it's under map-class, see example:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk652/tk701/technologies_configuration_example09186a0080094193.shtml
which IOS version do you have? 2600 has FRF.12 since 12.0.4T AFAIK.
