Vlan/Trunk Set up Questions

Hi All,
I've got 2 switches, 1900 and 2900. I have created a vlan(2) and assigned port f0/2 to it and a trunk on f0/26. I have attached a cross-over cable to port f0/26 and attached a PC(192.168.168.12) to f0/2 with a straight cable. I have attached a straight cable to f0/1 and attached to the Fasteth0/0 port(192.168.168.1) of a 2600 router. On the 2nd switch(2900) I've also created a 2nd vlan(2). My question, is, for the 2nd switches vlan2 to be the same vlan as the 1st switches vlan2, what is required.? Neither of my 2 books show how to assign vlans/port to vlans on 2 switches together. EDIT: Is it that with vtp domain being status on both switches, and with creating a trunk and switch 1 is a server and switch is a client, the vlan2 created on switch 1 will propagate to switch 2.? Allowing the ability to assign ports to vlan2 from the 2nd switch.? Cheers.

Hi All,
ok, deleted vlan2 on the 2900 switch and set vtp to client. I created a trunk on fa0/1 and attached a crossover cable to it that runs from the 1900's f0/1 which is trunked. But, when doing a show vlan on the 2900 the vlan2 created on the 1900 doesn't appear. What have I not done, or done correctly.? Cheers.

Hi,
First of all, VTP is used for Vlan propagation on your network switches via trunk link. A trunk port is a used to carry the traffic for multiple vlans. IF you have created vlans on your switch which is a VTP server then those vlans will get propogated to your switches which are in the same VTP domain. Now Vlans will get propogated to all the Switches but the ports has be statically configred to their respective vlans which you have to do manually on each and every switch on your network. VTP only passes the Vlan info not the port settings.
For you 1st question, the answer is that you have 2 switches connected with Trunk Link and have the same VLAn info and respective port assingned and the the trunk link is carrying the traffic.
For q2, the answer is tha moment you crated the trunk the VTP infomation was propogated to you 2900 switch and hence you see the Vlan in database.

SG200-08 VLAN-trunk setting ignored after reboot

The ports on my SG200-08 are configured as follows:
Port 1; VLAN 1+4; trunk
Port 2; VLAN 4; access
Port3-8; VLAN 1; access
The config for Port 1 looks as follows: "switchport trunk allowed vlan add 1,4". The problem I want to point out here arises right after rebooting the switch; in the running config, the aforementioned line is now present as "switchport trunk allowed vlan add 4", i.e., VLAN 1 is missing in the trunk. The problem is reproducible every time I reboot the switch. At this moment, I assume it to be a bug in the firmware. This is a problem for me, since the switch's management VLAN is 1 and it gets its IP address (DHCP) over VLAN 1 as well.
I have attached my startup config to this thread, as well as the running config exported right after reboot. In both of them, I've sanitized the rows on user accounts.
Does anyone recognize this problem? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Thanks for your answer. You're right in concluding the VLAN 1 is my default VLAN. The problem is that the switch should contact my DHCP server over VLAN 1 and since the traffic on port 1 is not tagged, the traffic DHCP request will never reach my DHCP server. As a consequence, the switch always ends up with its factory default IP address (192.168.1.254) instead of the IP address assigned by the DHCP server. And yes, that's a problem
So to summarize, when I configure tagged access for VLAN 1 on port 1 and write this to the startup config, it is indeed present in the startup config afterwards. However, the switch ignores this upon reboot, causing VLAN 1 on port 1 to feature untagged access.
By the way, I completely set up the switch from scratch after restoring the config to factory defaults. It would be great if you could try to reproduce the issue and hopefully come with a fix. In case you need more information, please don't hesitate to contact me.

WRVS4400N VLAN trunking question

Hi all,
I just got a SRW224G4 today my main objective is to trunk 30 VLAN(s) to my WRVS4400N for interVLAN communication. So far I set G1 on my SRW as a trunk port and linked it to port 2 on my WRVS4400N (which is also set as a trunk).
So far no good when I go into LAN settings I do not see an option wheree I can set DHCP addresses or gateways for these VLAN(s). Is this even possible with the WRVS4400N I meen if Linksys is going to provide a small business solution atleast their equipment should support VLAN trunking with each other.
If anybody knows the solution to this please let me know.

From what I know, although the WRVS4400N has support for port based VLAN setup, it does not give you the option to set different DHCP addresses for each of the 4 VLANS.

Decided we'd give the Cisco 300 series switches a try and see
what we think about them compared to our Cisco Catalyst 2960 switches.
I'm already stumped on setting up VLAN trunking between 4 switches. Do I have to manually setup all the VLAN's on each switch? I set them up on the first switch and was expecting GVRP would propagate them to the others like VTP.

VLAN Trunking/VTP Pruning

We have a 4000 series switch with fiber connections to approx 20 3550 switches that are located in our IDF closets. We have approx 22 VLANs and each closet has its own VLAN. There are a few machines in various closets that are on different VLAN than the closet is using.
In an effort to reduce workload, convergence time, bandwidth, etc; I have edited the allowed vlans for each trunk port - something like this:
Old: set trunk 6/1 on dot1q 1-199
New: set trunk 6/1 on dot1q 1,3,5
Now I think to need issue the "vtp pruning v2" command on the edge switches. Is this the right way to go? Is there anything else I can do to help?

Make sure you manually prune on the 3550 side also . "switch trunk allowed vlan 1,3,5" . Also make sure your root for each vlan is set on the 4000 . "set spantree root (vlan #) " .

VLAN trunking newbie SRW208MP to SRW2008MP

Just need a simple setup - 2 VLANs, a few ports each, on each unit, trunked together (ultimately on SFP module). Tried what seems to be right but (natch) not working. Just need simple guidelines to see where am going wrong. Thanks!

OK, well, using that example, as well as another thread here (Cisco SLM224P
VLAN TRUNKING), I reset and redid all the VLAN related settings.
There are 2 subnets in play here -
10.51.0.0/255.255.252.0 - VLAN 1 - Used as the Management VLAN.
10.51.4.0/255.255.255.0 - VLAN 5 - A subnet for Wireless LAN POE connection and management.
And 2 switches -
198 is a SRW208MP, remote unit. will have single WAP and various devices.
199 is a SRW2008MP, at head end near subnet(s) source. Will have up to 4 WAPs and the
connections required to provide for both subnets.
For purposes of discussion, the planned fiber SFP interconnect is being played by a copper trunk.
Setups follow:
198 VLANs-
198 Port Setting-
198 Ports to VLAN 1-
198 Ports to VLAN 5-
198 VLAN to Ports-
Unit 2 - 199
199 VLANs-
199 Port Settings-

The configuration as posted does not provide the expected results.
I am convinced I am overlooking something simple. Usually is!
The net results are that the Management VLAN (1) is present and accounted for on both switches, but that could even be because they are acting as switches do.
The VLAN 5, however, does not function at either end. The 'Local' switch, 199, shows traffic on the WAP ports but no traffic of any consequence is traversing and the WAPs are nonresponsive.
Ditto Remote switch. Management VLAN yes, 5 VLAN no.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

VLAN tagging and tagging question

Hello,
I have a question about VLAN tagging on a Cisco switch.
I've learned that switches tag frames with VLAN IDs once the frame enters a Trunk port (not when it enters a VLAN port).
Now, if two computers from the same VALN and on the SAME switch talk to each other then logically there should not be any VLAN assignment on the frames (as if they were connected to a hub).
Is that correct please?

Just to muddy the waters, since VLAN edge/access ports don't normally tag frames with VLAN IDs, referencing your question about two computers "talking" to each other, it doesn't matter whether the two ports or on the same switch or even different switches; or in the same VLAN or not.
Also understand trunk ports normally tag frames, and edge/access ports don't, but an exception for the former is the "native" VLAN frames aren't tagged, and an exception for the latter, a Voice VLAN will tag frames.

Does the 8540 support VLAN Trunking

I would like to VLAN trunk four VLANs(8540 bridge-groups) from an 8540 switch router to a Cat 5000. I have not seen in Cisco's documentation anything that indicates that the 8540 supports VLAN trunking.

8540 supports both ISL and 802.1q VLAN trunking

I have created them by the following syntax,

from emp;
but the problem with this is ,
when I inserted yes for the first one it is taking and if i am giving the second one also as YES then it is not accepting ..means it is checking the second item by clearing the first one.
What I need is when I check the second one the first one should not get cleared.

How to redirect user from login page to "Set Challenge question" page (NOT custom page) after 3 un successful password attempts?
Meaning when user types wrong password 3 times they will be redirected to set Challenge question page. If user answers the challenge question then password reset page should be appeared other wise (after remaining 3 un successeful challenge question answers) account should be locked out.

Thanks for your answer. Let me ellaborate more on the requirement here.
- Password Policy and Lost Password management are set up in the identity system
- Configure login tries allowed= 5. Verify accout is lock out after 5 unsucessful login.
This is what need to achieve.
1) If a user attempts to login 3(not 5) times using an incorrect login credential he/she should be redirected to set challenge question (security question) page.
2) Then if the user attempts (remaining) 2 times incorrect challenge answer then his/her account should be locked out.
3) If he/she answers the challenge answer correctly then he/she should be redirected to password reset page.
Is this possible?

Different user options with different sets of questions

Is there a way I can have two different options and when the user clicks on option A a whole set of questions/form fields appear. Or if they select option B a whole different set of questions/form fields appear?
How would I go about programming something like that?

SAP Logon Tickets issued by the Portal contain two user ids, basically one for Java Systems and one for ABAP systems. See also note 843061 for details.
You do not need passwords for the reference system, if the user mapping is maintained by the user administrator, and the UM property ume.usermapping

Forcing Users to set Security Questions

Hi All,
Currently when a user joins the organization, the user can go to IdM user interface, login and set security questions. But this is an option only if user wants to use self service in IdM. So, it has been found that users are not setting it and it becaomes a pain when they call help desk for password change and help desk is not able to verify the user's identity because security questions are not set.
Please share your thoughts how other organizations are handling this situation.
Is there any way that we can force a user to set security questions when the user logs in first time?

In our Organization we did the following.
Under the Security tab there is a Policy tab.
There you should find a policy called: Default Identity Manager Account Policy.
Under Secondary Authentication Policy Options make sure "Enforce Answer Policy at Login" is checked.
In page help states:
Select this option to enforce the authentication question policy when the user logs in to this interface.
This solution works however it did become problematic while we had pass-thru authentication configured.
