VLC better playback than itunes?

Hi there,
This is just an observation really, not a queation!! I've recently been using various encoders to find the best one for me, and eventually settled on AAC 160. Then I did a comparison with playback in VLC and itunes(using volume logic) and VLC is far better. is there a reason for this or is the eq in VLC just better?

Hi minsf
I exclusively use iTunes but all my CDs are ripped as apple losseless so no complaints here. As to your questions here are some suggestions:
XLD
iTunes-LAME Encoder
Finallyt, the aac format is supposed to be better than mp3. For the same bit rate, better sound quality. I am not being an apple evangelist here as aac is not an apple codec but belongs to the mpeg group

  • Better ripper than iTunes on Leopard?

    hi guys,
i love iTunes and am not interested in starting another flame war...
but i was never quite satisfied with the ripping and encoding quality. on my Linux box I use cdparanoia (a ripper based on cdda2wav) and LAME (mp3encoder) and i like the flac format (and after archiving as loseless, i normally use lame to encode as mp3 for use on my ipod-nano).
being new to mac, i was wondering if there are any equivalents to cdparanoia/flac/lame or other alternative rippers to itunes.
anybody has any experience with Max?
By the way, I am pretty fluent with the command line, so you are not going to scare me with "make install" or other terminal solutions... LOL
    thanks in advance

  • Has anyone discovered a better system than itunes for a 3gs. I do not like itunes

I now find the latest itunes overly complicated. I would like a more simplified system for my music and for connecting my ipod touch and iphone to. I would prefer that they stop changing the ios. and just do a simple security update. I want an opt out for updates and toolbars. I also want to never need to sign up to itunes store as for free trade you should connect to anywhere to buy your music. Is there a Spotify app for iphone or download music torrents straight into itunes. These would vastly improve the system. Any comments welcome.

If you would prefer the old look of iTunes, try these...:
    CTRL+S put back the sidebar
CTRL+B puts back the top bar menu
CTRL+SHIFT+B puts back the Column Browser
CTRL+/ puts back the total number of songs and file size on the bototm ofg the iTunes window.

Yes, well, hope on. But you can opt out of updates, you always have that choice. Toolbars, I've mentioned.

You are not compelled to use the iTunes Store. You are free to purchase MP3 music from Amazon, among other sites, import it into your iTunes library and put it on your iPod. What makes you think otherwise?

Usually, downloading by torrent means "illegally downloaded music". We will not be discussing that here.

  • Choppy mp4 playback in iTunes

Until tonight, I've never had issues with video playback in iTunes. I have a library of mp4 video files that I've played successfully in the past with little or no video quality issues.
All of a sudden, none of my videos will play correctly in iTunes. The video is incredibly choppy, with a new frame or two playing every 30 seconds while the audio plays relatively normally. If I open the same file in another player (VLC or WMP), the file will play correctly with no choppiness. In fact, I can play the video file in both players at the same time with zero quality loss, so there's no lack of computer power that would cause this in iTunes. To the best of my knowledge, nothing changed on my system to prompt this - I was literally in the middle of watching a video when it happened.
After experiencing this issue, I upgraded iTunes, Windows, and my video card drivers to the latest versions/drivers (rebooting several times in the process), but this did not help. Next, I followed all of the instructions in the relevant support document (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1718), also to no avail.
For the heck of it, I rented an HD movie from the iTunes store and had the exact same problem. I originally thought that this might be an issue with my media, but it is clearly not.
I often stream video from my PC to my AppleTV, and this is also experiencing the exact same choppy video (as you would expect).
I have no clue what else to try. I would prefer to watch the videos in another player, but this is sadly not an option if I wish to continue using my AppleTV. Has anyone else experienced this (or a similar) problem? I'm at my wits' end, and very unhappy that I spent so much time transferring my video library into iTunes. Nothing substantial changed on my computer that should have caused this, especially not in the middle of watching a movie. Any help or further ideas would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Solution: format computer because iTunes is terrible. Problem "solved," I guess

  • Windows Defender Beta 2 Stops iTunes 6.03 From Installing Completely

    Hey,
There is a bug with Windows Defender Beta 2 and iTunes.
I thought I would tell apple and Microsoft about it. Check microsoft beta newsgroups.
When you install iTunes 6.03 and have Windows Defender Beta 2 running it will cause iTunes setup to error with the following:
    http://img324.imageshack.us/img324/2262/itunesinstallerror5it.png
Clicking ok and install continues like normal and iTunes is installed ok. Have not run into any problems because of the errror in iTunes.
Now after installing iTunes Windows Defender Beta 2 flags its install since its trying to install a service.
    See:
    http://img324.imageshack.us/img324/8954/windowsdefenderbeta2allowerror.png
    And:

So here is to hoping Apple and Microsoft work this out sooner than later.
    Take Care,
    Will
Custom Build   Windows XP   Geforce 6800

Katrina--Correct me if I'm wrong but there is no way to turn off the new Windows Defender software (it's the replacement for the Microsoft Anti-Spy beta software). Fortunately, I already had iTunes 6.02.23 installed before I installed Windows Defender earlier this week. I had some big problems accessing the music store yesterday, but I've resolved them. (And I really don't think Defender was causing the problems. I think the music store home page was overwhelmed by people participating in the current contest.) If there's a conflict between Defender and iTunes it helps those of us using both to know this. Then we can figure out troubleshooting solutions to resolve the problem. If we come up with workarounds, it helps everyone on this board, doesn't it?
P.S., I understand Spybot has problems with the newest version of iTunes too. The mini-store is the culprit. I don't think these programs prevent you from using iTunes they just don't like some of the features in the mini store--so they warn you about them.

  • Better playback of AVCHD in CS 5.5?

    Hi
Are still running CS 5.03 on my two year old i7-920, and are stille experiencing some stutter and issues during playback while editting AVCHD - especially crossdissolves etc. between to different clips from same AVCHD file (a known bug/iussue in CS 5.0).
I have been wondering if it had anything to do with my system - and that might also be the cvase, but I have read about folks here in the forum having same issues a while back running PPro CS 5 on much better PCs than my own.
I have also lately read about a few that had some issues with playing back AVCHD, but after upgrading to 5.5 it seems to have dissapeared? So I wonder if these issues are solved in CS 5.5? Anyone who have had better experiences with AVCHD editting - both playback and overall - with PPro CS 5.5 compared to CS 5.0?
    Cheers,
    Morten

Nope - I have the Nvidia FX3800 and latest driver. It plays nice raw, but if you take a clip - divide it into two parts and make a crossdisolve between them - it stutters during playback - even without effects or anything. If I add just a simple effect it does not playback smoothly.
Wonder if a Blackmagic device could help in any way? Not sure I really understand what these BM gizmos are capable of? One could get the impression that they make it possible to playback smoothly AVCHD in 19020x1080 50/60P realtime with lots of effects etc. - am I wrong?

  • Playback of iTunes Contents Stored in iMac mid-2010 (upgraded to Mountain Lion) using Apple TV

I am not 100% certain that upgrading to ML is giving me issues with Apple TV playback (not mirroring) but I AM having trouble with playback of music and movie stored in iTunes/iMac mid-2010.
I have an iMac mid-2010, 3rd generation Apple TV, cable broadband connection, and linksys wireless router.
Ever since I upgraded my iMac from snow leopard to ML (and yes I followed all directions and updated my apple TV as well to the latest software version), Apple TV takes as long a 5 to 10 minutes to play a song in my iTunes/iMac.
I thought it was the broadband or wi-fi connection so I tried netflix streaming using apple TV and it was fine.
Playback of movies stored in iTune/iac are also affected and it takes a long time to load as well.
In addition, once the content is playing, there's lagging/buffering and the playback stalls.
What's going on?  Is it the speed of the wi-fi or broadband as suggested by Apple troubleshooting tip and this forum?  The only thing that has changed from the time that playback of itunes contents using apple TV was working vs. not is the upgrade to ML.
Anyone else experiencing this problem?  Recommendations?

So by switching your router to one that was WiFi "N" allowed you to obtain higher speed and allowed you stream from your computer to your apple TV/TV without any issues
My Current Router is an older Wireless G Router but I have no issues at all with this router it works with all my devices at home and I havent had any problems what so ever. However my room is the only room in the house in which I stream wirelessly to my TV most other devices are just tablets and other laptops that are connected to the network.
Also I was wondering if this is more of a networking issue rather than a graphics card or OS issue? Im not even sure where this falls in place.
Also I would just like to thank you Gnarlodious for your input

  • Is m4v better quality than a remuxed MKV file via Subler?

I'm slowly building my home media server and putting my Blu-Ray's onto it. I normally do a Handbrake conversion for ATV3, so the MKV files end up being significantly smaller m4v's and the quality is outstanding. But I recently learned about the quick remux method using Subler, which quickly converts the MKV container into an m4v container without any quality loss and while keeping the same size file.  But I noticed that, say, a 29GB MKV file is a much poorer softer picture on my plasma TV than the same movie that's only a 9GB MKV file (remuxed to m4v with subler for streaming over ATV3). I'm running a 300mbps cable modem so the streaming shouldn't be a problem over my home wifi.  But I also noticed that the smaller m4v's (say a 3.5GB file that comes from a 9GB MKV file via Handbrake) seem to be slightly better quality than the 9GB file that was remuxed.  So it seems like the larger file should be even higher quality -- but I'm getting better results with a smaller file that's Handbrake'd from MKV to m4v.
Is there some sort of streaming setting on the ATV3 that needs to be set or adjusted that will allow the full gorgeous pic quality of a 29GB file to stream right through to it, and look better than the Handbrake'd m4v file?  It feels like there's a bottleneck somewhere that's not letting all of the complete picture information through, and an intact, perfect 29GB file should look light years better than that 29GB file Handbrake'd down to 4GB.  Trying to figure this out before I continue down this home media server path cuz it's a lot of work to do these Blu's one at a time.
    Kirby

I have no experience of the remuxing you describe, but interesting observations.
There is nothing you can adjust on AppleTV - it will either play the encoded movie or it won't.
AppleTv's generally playback the h264 codec (in an m4v container) - there are many many versions/levels of this codec and each generation of AppleTv has been able to play slightly more sophisticated versions.
I suspect but cannot prove that the issue you notice is due to AppleTV attempting to support advanced h264 features but making compromises which affect playback quality - in other words it is cutting corners to playback advanced h264 profile features rather than refusing.  Handbrake on the other hand has time at its disposal - it has been refined over many years by dedicated enthusiasts so if a simple remux is all that's required i'd be surprised they have not implemented that.  Instead I suspect it more accurately processes enhanced h264 features before transcoding into a new smaller m4v file.  Equally there might be settings in HB which artificially sharpen or otherwise alter the video which you prefer.  I'd compare the BluRay tothe remuxed or HB versions to attempt to decide which was more faithful to the original but even then it would be dependent on the BluRay player's settings in some cases.

  • Choppy playback since iTunes 9

I just installed iTunes 9 on my laptop, a Powerbook G4 867MHz running Mac OS 10.5.8. All of the playback from the local library, Home Sharing, and radio is choppy and unlistenable. Is anyone else experiencing this, or better yet, does anyone have a possible solution?

I had same problem - i phoned apple. they gave me a solution which I can't remember 100% - it seems that the safety lock on the HDD kicking in to upset playback on itunes. the tech guy told me to SHUT DOWN remove all power and other cables. Then I had to press shift-option-control (i think it was please check to confirm!) for 30 seconds (computer is off during this) then press power button and hold while it starts up (again I can't remember how long so please check). After this itunes works flawless and has done for a week. So if this is your problem then either search for better instructions or phone apple. I wasn't charged and not part of apple care i.e. FOC. Hope this helped (a bit!)

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If you have failed to bakup, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: File>Transfer Purchases

After replacing the hard drive on my G4 Powerbook and reinstalling Tiger I am no longer able to synch between itunes and my ipod (Classic 160gb) it would seem that the software on the ipod is of later date than itunes and I am unable to update itunes to the state prior to the original harddrive's failure for Tiger OSX 10.4.11
Any ideas on the subject would be most helpful
    Thanks in advance
    Dingoh

The last security update released for Tiger users was the 2009-005 update. The latest version of QuickTime is 7.6.4. The last version of iTunes that can run on Tiger is 9.2.1, because 10.0 only supports Mac OS X Leopard and later.
So, are you on version 9.2.1?
Was it Tiger or Leopard you had on the drive before?

  • My iTunes account is no longer showing my playlists or any of the music I have added from sources other than iTunes.

I discovered that iTunes is no longer showing any of my playlists or music I have added from sources other than iTunes.  My iPod, which is a 4th Gen Classic, seems fine and has all of my playlists and music.  My question is how do I upload my iPod to iTunes so that I don't lose anything?  I have read a lot of posts about people having similar problems and most of them suggest restoring from an old saved file.  I have two problems with this approach 1) I do not have a current back-up and 2) it does not seem to work for any of my non-Apple purcahsed music.  Does anyone know of an easy way to fix this?

I'd do a "deauthorize all" from a computer you have access to, and then reauthorise the computers you still have access to.
For instructions, see the following document:

  • Computer has different name than Itunes for Ipod Touch

I have an Ipod Touch 4th Generation 32gb. I have had no problems with it or with Itunes. My Mom came last Saturday to visit and she needed to charge her Ipod Touch so I hooked it to my computer where I always have a cord and charged it for about 45 minutes or so. I have no problem with my Ipod or with Itunes BUT when I go look at the device now on my computer, when it is connected to USB cord, it show "Marys Ipod" now instead of "Steves Ipod". In Itunes, it is still "Steves Ipod" and I can sync and all but I really want to get rid of "Marys Ipod" off my computer even though when I open it up, it is my ipod, just mislabed. I know because it has my pictures and her's is only 8gb. My Ipad2, is fine when I hook it up to the USB cord, It says "Steves Ipad" but when I hook my USB cord to my ipod touch, it still reads "Marys Ipod". Is this something I should be concerned about or is it not worth the hassle of trying to restore, etc? I have tried to change the name, but Windows won't allow. I do have Windows 7. I have also got the new update on Itunes and the new software(5.0) version.
I am stumped. I have googled this and have searched for over 3 hours today on how to fix this. Ready to bang my head against the wall. I have did a reboot on Ipod, I have restarted the computer. I have not reinstalled anything including Itunes.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? I would sure appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.

I just found the answer to this after hours of searching online. Make sure your iPod is hooked up to your computer & turned on.
Click on "Start" and in the search box type "regedit". This will display a program called "Registry Editor". Open it.
Click on the "Edit" tab and select "Find...". Type "Mary" in the search box and click "Find Next". It will bring up a list of everything that has "Mary" in it. (You may have to click on "Find next" under the "Edit" tab in order to find the associated items that have something to do with both "iPod" and "Mary".) What you need to pay attention to is not the NAME, but the DATA column. For me, the wrong iPod name was listed in 2 places in the data column. The actual names of those 2 items were "FriendlyName" and "Label".
Once you find the associated items that have to do with both the iPod and "Mary", right click on one of them. Select "Modify...". A box will open giving a "Value Name" box and a "Value Data" box. The "Value Data" box should say "Mary's iPod". All you have to do is change it to "Steve's iPod" and click "OK". Repeat the "Modify..." and renaming of the "Value Data" steps for every item that says something about "Mary's iPod".
Close the Registry Editor. Open "my computer" and see that it changed the name of your iPod back to "Steve's iPod".
Best Answer So far.....it really works...Thanks a million
