Vlc pvr problems

I have a sort of complicated problem dealing with user permissions for the pvr device in vlc.
First, some information about my system:
Archlinux Kernel26-2.6.25.6-2-i686
tv-tuner: Hauppauge WinTV-PVR PCI II
vlc version 0.9.8a-4 (the latest version in pacman as of 01-25-09)
As a non-root user, I am able to open a SINGLE tv channel by performing the actions: Open Capture Device..., PVR, and inserting the specific frequency of the channel.
What is puzzling is when I try to change channels. Now, normally I just open up a playlist file with the channels already preset. Basically, every entry in the file looks like this, but with the frequency and channel name changed:
#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:0,2 Channel2
#EXTVLCOPT:pvr-device=/dev/video0
#EXTVLCOPT:pvr-radio-device=/dev/radio0
#EXTVLCOPT:pvr-norm=0
#EXTVLCOPT:pvr-frequency=55250
#EXTVLCOPT:pvr-bitrate=-1
pvr://
If I open the playlist file it opens the first entry, channel 2, and will display channel 2. But when I click another channel in the list I receive this error in xterm:
[00000575] main input error: unsafe option "pvr-device" has been ignored for security reasons
[00000575] main input error: unsafe option "pvr-radio-device" has been ignored for security reasons
[00000575] main input error: unsafe option "pvr-norm" has been ignored for security reasons
[00000575] main input error: unsafe option "pvr-frequency" has been ignored for security reasons
[00000575] main input error: unsafe option "pvr-bitrate" has been ignored for security reasons
[00000577] pvr access error: Failed to write 0 new capture card settings.
...and the panel at the bottom of the main window tells me that I am on another channel, but after the switch it goes back to displaying channel 2.
Obviously, I am able to access the card. But somehow I am not allowed to switch frequencies within the playlist. I have checked the permissions for my user and I am able to access the groups audio and video.
Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks.

Just upgraded to Win 7, and the problem's gone. Must be an XP driver of some sort.

  • VLC audio problems on T400 - DPC Latency Issue?

    Hi Folks,
When I try to use VLC player to play any video on my T400, I get audio stutters and other strange effects.  I'm wondering if it might have to do with all the audio DPC Latency issues this model has had.  Does anyone else have these issues?  Windows media player seems to work just fine, by the way.  DPC Latency is high when either program is playing, but remains high when VLC has paused playback (whereas windows media player doesn't induce high DPC Latency when paused).
I've tried tweaking the buffer of VLC player, and a million other things, but nothing seems to help.  Hence my suspicion of DPC Latency issues.

  • Hauppauge HD PVR problems with M2TSfiles quality output

I bought recently a hauppauge HD PVR. This hauppauge  records my X-box 360 gameplay in M2TS-files/1080i.
I edit these files with PE9. Importing files to PE9 works all right, quality is acceptable,
but burning the files to a DVD the files loose much quality. It looks blurred and it flickers.
At this moment I have the trail version of PE9 and I doubt now about buying this program, because
the quality of de DVD's is so poor. Are these problems due to PE9 itself, or some wrong settings,
or do I have to buy a blue ray burner (which I would prefer not to) to get a better quality?
Thanks if you could help me soon.
    Arthur

I cannot speak for the mechanics, but I thought that Gossamer had gotten the details to do that. Maybe down-thread a bit.
IIRC, one can burn ~ 20 mins. of HD material to a DVD, but I believe that would be on a DVD-9 (Double Layer disc).
    Good luck,

  • VLC fullscreen problem

    Hello,
I use VLC to watch videos on my eeePC. I have a up-to-date Arch install with kdemod 4.1.
The player works quite well, but I don't have (and never did) a fullscreen control (i.e. a progress bar when the video is on fullscreen) as shown on vlc homepage. I tried modifying nearly all options in the program and also tried deleting my ~/.config/vlc directory to no avail.
Does anyone have dome insight on this problem?
    Thank you!

This is a bug in VLC and QT integration. A rare race condition is corrected in 1.0 (due in ~march). So devs disabled completely the integration. That sucks: if does crash, just uncheck the pref and be it! Now the preference is not consitent.

  • Problems installing vlc

    Hi.
I just tried to install vlc. Problem is, in it's dependencies is a package called libvpx. That package should be in extra, but unfortunately i can't install it because the package can not be found on any server. Does anybody know anything about that?

On my preffered server it is there:
    http://mirror.selfnet.de/archlinux/extr … pkg.tar.xz
    http://mirror.selfnet.de/archlinux/extr … pkg.tar.xz
It has been upgraded just today...
You can install it with pacman -U http://mirror.selfnet.de/archlinux/extr … pkg.tar.xz directly (but you probably shouldn't because of possible version mismatch)

  • Problems in reading DVDs

I am helping a friend who has no access to fast internet and no experience with Mac to solve her problems with Macmini.
    She has Mac Mini PPC.
She usually has some DVD with data copied and products picture given by clients and from the office, of course are just back up copies.
Her Mini cannot read these DVDs, we have tried with VLC nothing.
Even the DVD icon on desktop disappears and unable to eject it. We have to restart and keep mouse clicked, that is quite troublesome and we don't understand the way to resolve this eject issue.
Why those back up copies cannot be read ? Is due to the optical drive ?
Can Mac Mini read and burn any type of DVD's.
Hope you can help and solve her problems
We tried with quicktime but also unable to open.
    Thanks for your help
    Ciao

Yes the drive can read commercial DVD and CD. I found maybe a solution. If I use right click of the mouse or CTRL+click I can open the file inside the DVD with VLC, no problem. I don't understand why I cannot do it using VLC OPENDISK andDVD option or TS folder, doesn't work that way.
Why sometimes disk icon on the desktop is not found even if DVD is in or cannot eject pusign keyboard key or trashing it ?
Is possible to send a zipped application to my friend so she can open without problems, because of low connection or is the same as download ?
    Thanks

  • DVD does not play on VLC media player or Windows Media Player

Hi I've bought a set of 5 DVDs and played 1, 2 and 3 with VLC no problems. When it came to DVD 4 or 5 it decides not to play? When I open Windows Explorer the disc has the title etc but VLC seems to try reading it and nothing happens. No error message nothing.
I went back to try the other 3 disc and all are fine and plays as per normal. Are DVD 4 and 5 just faulty? I haven't got any DVD player with me to try so I won't know. Or is there a solution or error somewhere?
My laptop is bought in the UK but DVDs are Australia bought if that makes any difference?
    Many thanks.

Not all DVDs will play in XP Mode, mainly due to DRM restrictions.  The DRM thinks you've made a copy of the DVD and prevents it from playing.
Are you able to play this on your Windows 7 host, or do you see the same behavior there?

  • Strange problem with drag&drop!!

hello i hope u can help me.
i have a strange problem but not like the other users with drag&drop in Leopard..
mine is not exactly like this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1198982&tstart=3538
i can hold left click and move files but when i need to "drop" them at the .app's window the app rejects the file back! (some of the applications not all!)
what i mean in examples is:
i cannot drag&drop anything in the VLC's player window but i can inside the vlc's "controller" window
    i cannot drag&drop a picture in preview
i cannot drag&drop any file in photoshop's new file/empty canvas
    i cannot drag&drop a mp3 file in itunes but i can drag&drop a full album folder(only in playlist,not in the player window)!
and i can describe more to show u that it's not about vlc or preview or PS problem, but finder's/leopard problem.
(i thought in the 1st, that it's vlc's problem and i downloaded a lot of versions!)
all the other programs works well, for example i can drag&drop a video to final cut or motion
i can do the same in iMovie (at the space it says"drag&drop media here etc)
and of course i can drag&drop files to desctop, hard disks etc.
i can copy/paste text etc (i can copy/paste texti can copy/paste texti can copy/paste texti can copy/paste text)
i am trying to give you an idea, suggest me what else should i try in order to focus where exactly the problem is!
i hope u give me a solution cause drag&drop is usefull!
    thank you
in order to help u, i will describe what i tried so far:
    1)repair permissions
    2)trash com.apple.finder
3)terminal solution like this: (didn't worked)
    sudo su -
    cd /
rmdir tmp +*(rmdir: tmp: No such file or directory)*+
    ln -s tmp /private/tmp

hello and thanks for your reply
but why you quote only the part of VLC?
One thing at a time. Occam's razor.
and why u believe this is normal?
i am sure that VLC can drag & drop subtitles or the movie in the player window.
and when i say sure, i mean 100%
I disagree. I have tried this since reading your post, on all my VLC versions. It does not work.
You can, however drop a movie onto the VLC icon in the dock. That works fine.
RealPlayer accepts a file dropped on it. I just checked it.
Not all apps accept a file on their output window. Usually only the input window.
i started my windows bootcamp partition before and i saw this works.
and i remember trying VLC in tiger a lot of years before, this was ok.
and yes of course it would be also normal to drop a picture in the photoshop canvas.
so what is not normal here is my problem, if u can help i'm happy if you cannot please don't confuse it more
(sorry if i sound "unclear", english is not my 1st languange)
I will check VLC next time I run Tiger and let you know.

  • Can't open an .avi in Quicktime

    Hello,
I'm on an iMac 17" 10.4.11 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and when I try to open an .avi with Quicktime I get the message that additional software is required for Quicktime to play this media. It may be available from the the QuickTime Components page. When I go to that page there are a bunch of options and I'm not sure what I need.
I downloaded Perian and Flip4Mac thinking that would solve the problem but it doesn't. The .avi will open in VLC no problem but just wondering why it won't open in Quicktime. What additional software do I need?

Launch the QuickTime Player, open it, and choose to display the inspector or properties from the Window menu, or use MPEG Streamclip to check the format.

  • Burned cd's won't work

I burned two CD's on my roomate's computer (not the same video on both) with a couple of AVI movies that, while on my hard drive, worked just fine.
I burned the CD and it mounted on my system fine, but VLC couldn't read it. It's not VLC's problem because I Couldn't even copy the data back to my hard drive. I got a READ error.
I burned it using GnomeBaker on a Linux system. In the burning options, filesystems Joliet and Rockridge were both checked. Although I'm positive that ROckridge isn't one that would work in OS X, Joliet should (I'm certain).
However, some other testing proved that it's not a matter of the filesystem... I couldn't even mount these CDs on the original Linux computer.
I'm not going to be hasty and say it's crappy CD at fault here; they're a 'normal' brand

  • DVD Player freezing my computer

I have one DVD that will not play in DVD Player. It starts playing and then freezes on the legal notice. And it doesn't just freeze the application, it freezes the whole computer, and my computer screen starts flashing to black for split seconds at regular intervals. All I can do is a hard shut down with the power button. There's nothing out of the ordinary with the disc that I can tell. It's brand new without any scratches. DVD Player plays other DVDs just fine.
    Things I've tried:
Playing the DVD using VLC: No problem at all. Plays just fine.
Playing the DVD in DVD Player in a different user account: Still freezes the computer.
Playing the DVD on my family's PowerPC iMac G5: Plays in DVD Player without a hitch.
Playing the DVD on my brother's Intel MacBook Pro exactly like mine: Plays in DVD Player just fine.
Deleting DVD Player and CDInfo preferences & restarting: Still freezes my computer in DVD Player.
Now I'm out of ideas. Anyone have a clue as to what might be wrong?
    Thanks!

One more thing I've tried: uninstalling and reinstalling DVD Player and repairing permissions. It didn't work. The DVD is still freezing my computer in DVD Player. Any ideas anyone?

  • Music skips when im running itunes 11 in background

music skips when im running itunes 11 in background

After the 11.1.1 upgrade iTunes skips songs after a certain period of time. The skipping moment is different for a bunch of songs, but it's staying the same for each of those songs (one song always skips at 0:34, another one always at 0:05, etc.). When I manually set the "marker" right behind that moment the songs play through to the end. All the files are ok. When I drag them to the desktop and play them in preview or VLC the problem does not occur! There is also no exclamation mark or anything...
Any ideas anbody? I'm really dazed...

  • How to reinstall openGL driver (deleted by mistake)?

    Hi,
using clean app to clean some of my applications, I have deleted the OpenGL driver by mistake. Now application like quick time and VLC have problem to run. Is there a way to reinstall only this driver? If I reinstall Maverick, will it work?
    In advance thank you

    Hi NicomIx,
The best way to reinstall the OpenGL driver is going to be a reinstall of the OS; you may find the following article helpful (While a reinstall of this sort shouldn't affect your data, it is always a good idea to have a current backup of your personal data prior to a reinstall):

  • [SOLVED] FLASH and Mplayer automatic fasforward playing with no sound

    Hi,
This has been the second time it happened.
When I was playing some video at the background with SMplayer. All in a sudden, the playing stopped. I closed and restarted it:
last time: the video  fast-forwarded automatically without any sound, same problem with VLC;  [the problem got "fixed" only after I rebooted my host Window 7; restarting the archlinux guest didn't help.]
this time: VLC (there was an update in between) can play at a normal speed, but still no sound; as for smplayer, no sound, fastforwading automatically.
And, in both times, flash in firefox fast-forwarded automatically with no sound.
I have Archlinux/Xfce4 in virtualbox hosted by Windows 7. I have been using it for about one month. The problem occurred in last two days.
    Thanks,
