VLC works, DVD Player doesn't

So I can't figure it out. I have been trying for weeks now to get DVD Player to play DVD's (I don't know why it stopped), but it simply won't. Even if it's a movie copied to my hard disk, it simply won't play. If I do get it to sort of play, there's no sound. Most times I can't even get past the FBI warnings.
So then I download VLC and it works perfectly.
Any ideas...what's going on?!

yikes...I know NOTHING about using Console, but here's something I found. I don't know how much you need so I'll paste it all in. There are several sets of these under /Library/Logs/Console/501:

I have a 2 year old MacBook Pro and the superdrive has stopped working, it won't take discs in as if there is one already inside but iTunes or the dvd player doesn't recognise that there is a disc inside and if there is it can't be ejected, i have tried shutting down and restartinf while holding down the trackpad, as recommended on some forums but that has done nothing
It might be a huge coincidence but the drive was working fine before i installed lion?

Installing Lion would not cause the superdrive to stop working.  Are you unsure as to whether or no a cd/dvd is inside?  Something may be broken inside and you should consider bringing it in for service.

It sure is. It also plays on my PC using VLC Player. So, I know that it was burned onto the DVD.

Three issues here.  The pre-pending is useless when selecting songs to play, plus it.takes up much of the admittedly limited space in my on-screen menu.  Since it doesn't help me select a song to play, it simply prevents more relevant info from being displayed in that area.  However, there is a second area on the menu that is designed to list title, artist and album but those fields are blank - despite I-tunes inclusion of the info in the xferred files.
    JCP,
Regarding the tags, on an MP3 CD iTunes simply burns whatever is embedded in the MP3 file.  From your description, it sounds like the Onkyo is seeing the filenames but not the tags, which does seem strange.  You may want to try the question in an Onkyo forum.
If you don't need the pre-pended serial number, and don't care about the sequence, you can burn from iTunes as a data CD instead of an MP3 CD.

  • DVD player doesn't work correctly

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300 laptop. It's pretty new - bought in the summer. The operating system is Windows Vista.
I have a problem with my DVD player. It often just stops working. It sometimes works after I restart the computer, but for short periods of time. When it doesn't work, it doesn't eject when I click the eject button or when I go to My Computer and choose eject from there. In addition, if there's a disk in it, it's not recognized - when I go to My Computer and double click, it says "Please insert a disk."
However, when I click the eject button on the player, an orange light shows up for a second. It doesn't make any sound, though.
When it works and I burn a DVD, the sound it makes isn't continuous which shows that it doesn't work continuously(right?). I mean, it burns and the burning process seems to be getting somewhere and then the sound stops for a few seconds and the bar stops and then they both continue. Maybe this is normal, I don't really know.
I tried Safe Mode to see if it works, but the result is the same.
I also opened the Device Manager and checked if there's an update, but there's none.
I tried System Restore too, but it didn't work.
Somehow, I think the problem is with the driver because the orange light appears when I click the eject button, but I don't know anything about DVD players, so I'm not sure about anything.
I really don't want to reinstall Windows because firstly, the process of first backing up everything, then waiting for it to reinstall and then get everything on there again (and installing the millions of programs I'm using again) is just stupid, takes to long and it usually doesn't solve problems anyway. Reinstalling is one of my last options, together with taking it to the repair people. Right now, I really need my laptop every day so if there's no solution, it might take a while before I find time to take it there. Thanks to everyone that replies.

I think I found out something new today. I had the same problem again, but the DVD player wouldn't work even after I restarted several times and went into Safe Mode. Accidentally, though, when I wanted to restart the last time, I clicked the hibernate button and when I turned the laptop on again, the DVD player worked. It might just be a coincidence, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

  • Satellite P200-1B6: Sound Driver update fails and HD-DVD Player doesn't work

I have just bought a Satellite P200-1B6 laptop and spent the day installing the updates recommended by the TEMPO program. One of these was a Sound Driver update from RealTek but on running this it fails about 80% of the way through with an error: 'Install Realtek HD Audio Driver Failure !!'.
Now the Toshiba HD DVD player fails to start with an error 'Unable to output the video to an external device.
Please switch your display device by pressing the Fn + F5 keys after ending the application'. I've tried this but it seems to have no effect.
I'm now regretting starting to update the installed drivers. Should I try to rebuild the machine using the recovery discs or is there another solution that someone has found? Or have others found the upgrade works?
    Any advice welcome

Last month I upgraded my PC Satellite P200 (BIOS, Driver ATI HD2600, Package VAP and HD-DVD Player).
But after this update, I was no longer be able to read my HD-DVDs
Error message was: "Unable to send the video to an external device. Please turn off the display device."
The problem was much of the update Realtek R1.76 (Realtek Sound Driver - 6.0.1.547 - 20/11/07) currently proposed on the site toshiba.
Indeed, the P200-1DE is equipped with Realtek ALC268 Audio Codec.
The latest update of this codec is R1.89. I downloaded from the site Realtek and it has allowed me to solve the problem.

  • DVD player doesn't work with apple TV

I have an mid-2011 27" iMac and a third generation Apple TV. I just discovered that DVDs will not play on the Apple TV using airplay and mirroring from my iMac. The sound is there, but the video is displayed as a screen filled with white and gray squares. Any suggestions?

Thanks Rudegar and Brian. I am not attempting to play copyrighted material. I teach German in a high school and I have downloaded a series from PBS to show my students. The videos play properly on my iMac, but not when I mirror my iMac to the Apple TV in my classroom. I have many YouTube videos that play well when mirrored, but the material I saved as DVDs are causing the problem. Had I simply saved them in the mov. format, I would not be having this problem. Does anyone know if there is a solution to make the DVD player function properly when mirroring to an Apple TV?

  • DVD player doesn't play some DVDs

I've had my macbookpro for several months now. I've been mostly satisfied, but the DVD player seems to be messed up. I have never had a problem with software or CDs, but every once in a while, the DVD player will not play movies. Most of the time, these are Netflix movies which, understandably for shared discs, sometimes have blemishes. However, these same discs have no problems playing on my cheap dvd player hooked up to the tv. I've taken it into the mac store, but they told me nothing is wrong. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way to upgrade or change the dvd player? Thanks.

    First, welcome to the discussions.
This issue is not a suprise because of the Optical drives and the Fimware that Apple uses in there computers.
Apple has much higher standards for there Optical Drives, and therefore they are very very picky about the Media that they will accept and burn and read.
My quess is that the Movies you are getting are either scratched or smudged and they will either eject from your Mac or will render you an error message.
On some occasions there will be a problem with Optical Drives. If you can read and write with New Good Media, and you are able to use the DVD Player with New Commercial DVD Movies then this tells me it is the Netflix DVD's are of poor quality.

  • DVD  player doesn't play movies with .avi extension

My friend recently gave me dvds that had movies burnt off the net. They're all files with .avi extensions. When i tried to open the file, it said i needed a higher version of quick time player, which i downloaded off the apple site.
After all this, i still can't play my dvd. What's happening here? The drive also makes these weird noises, like there's something seriously going wrong with the dvd. I tried playing it through dvd player on my mac book pro, but i couldn't open any file on it. It keeps sayin " NOT PERMITTED" . Funny part is, my friend could easily watch all these movies on his windows xp computer...
    Please helppp !!!

I think it is unforgivable a DVD player won't play DVD's that are not actually DVD's at all but data disks. I am still mad my DVD player will not paint my house.
Windows uses the one size fits all WM Player and it plays DVD and data disks or files etc.
Use Quicktime and Perian (free) to play those pesky files either from the DVD or from a drag and drop to the desktop first.

  • DVD Player doesn't play on TVy

I hooked up my Mac Book to my Toshiba LCD TV but I get no input. I use the DVI to HDMI adapter and then to the hdmi input. But no picture when I switch to the hdmi input on the TV. Is there something in the computer that has to be turned on or selected?
(it would be nice if there was a separate forum for DVD Player rather than burying it in Leopard.)

Did you try having your MB detecting displays first?
With your TV connected, click on the apple icon on the upper left and select 'System Preferences...' from the drop-down menu. Click on the 'Displays' icon, then find and press the button that says 'Detect displays'. I don't have my external monitor hooked up at the moment, so from there you're on your own. If I remember correctly, the next thing you'll have to do (assuming your TV is being properly detected) is select the screen resolution. You should select the option to have mirrored displays.
By the way, you do realize the DVI out is just going to put a picture on your TV with no audio, right? The sound is plugged in separately.

  • DVD Player doesn't appear in Launchpad?

I have recently decided to give Launchpad a trial but for some reason the DVD Player does not appear in it. (As I have around 100 apps installed, there may be others that don't show up as well).
I have used Launchpad Manager to arrange the apps into alphabetical order but DVD Player is nowhere to be seen.
Of course I can always find it in the Applications folder, but Launchpad should also display it.
    Is this a known problem?
    Any ideas?

Solution found in the ML forum posted a year ago by SoCalGadgetGuy:-
Adding the icon for any installed App is easy in Launchpad. Just type its name in Launchpad's own search box found near the top of every Launchpad screen. The icon for the missing App will be displayed on a new screen by itself. Then just click on it and drag it to your desired location in Launchpad.

  • The DVD player doesn't play. It says the DVD is empty and asks if I want to burn.

I have tried to play several different movies with no luck.  The player spins and acts like it is going to work and then gives me a screen asking me if I want to burn the DVD because it is empty (which I know it isn't).  Any suggestions as to where I even start looking in regards as to how to fix the problem without having to take the laptop somewhere?  I am not a techy person at all so "plain English" answers please!

  • DVD player doesn't read Tiger DVD

I am running Panther and I am trying to upgrade to Tiger so I bought the Tiger DVD from the Apple Store. My G5 wouldn't recognize the DVD. I tried other DVDs that I own, both commercial and burned from other computers, and they all worked fine on my computer. I can stick with Panther I guess.
