VM Consolidation & Licensing

We're trying to consolidate underutilized servers and we're looking at migrating towards either Oracle VM or VMware. I'm still trying to wrap my head around license savings (if there are any), so my question is:
Let's assume I have two physical servers, each running its own instance of Oracle 11g on its own dedicated operating system. Each machine has 8 AMD dual core processors.
So we do the math. Processors * Cores * Factor = # of licenses
8*2*.5 = 8 Licenses per box
16 total for both boxes
Now let's assume I eliminate one of the boxes. With the remaining box I install Oracle VM or VMware and I install two guest operating systems with each running its own instance of Oracle 11g.
Am I now paying for half of the licenses since I've consolidated them to an 8 license box?

You only pay for the physical cores in use, regardless of how many instances are running on those cores. This is true for Oracle VM, Enterprise Linux and Database, btw.
Keep in mind however that only Oracle VM is a certified virtualization platform for Oracle products and this advice is based on running on Oracle VM. If you chose to run on VMware, you should check with your Oracle licensing representative, as I have no idea what happens in that situation. :)

  • Master Collection 3.3 and Acrobat Extended 9.0

I have the master collection CS3.2. The current master collection upgrade includes a path to Acrobat Pro 9.0 but not to the Acrobat Pro 9.0 Extended version. The upgrade pricing of 299 to the extended version should be available to holders of the master collection.
The master collection should include an upgrade path to the extended version to any product within the grouping. What is the point of the master collection if it does not enable you to maintain a consolidated licensing. Both sales and support do not answer the question or provide any feedback other than contact the other. I am hoping that someone who is not following a script will read this and provide a resolution.

    I totally agree with Mike.
I work for a college and we have 15 Mac Pros, but we use both Windows and Mac OS as they are Intel.
Students are using all of the CS2 suite and then we have Maya for 3D modelling. I really want to be able to teach students to author PDFs as interactive media and want them to be able to showcase their 3D models in an interactive form.
Showing videos of animations is fine, but I really like the features from Acrobat 3D (I tried the older trial).
We are hoping to upgrade from CS2 Design Premium to CS4 Master collection in order to get After Affects and Encore and the rest but sadly we still wouldn't have Acrobat Pro Extended.
Is there no way to get Acrobat Pro Extended via an upgrade. Naturally we have Educational Licensing and we are on a Volume contract (or whatever it's called). We are UK based so perhaps the licenses are different in different regions. So many questions!

    Hi All,
we were having two seprate companies for which we have ordered  5 & 6 sap licenses  . but we installed sap business one on a single server . the licenses we recieved from sap are in two different file & now we require consolidate license file to a single file so thet we can import these lecenses in SAP .
please give me procedure for license consolidation.

    Hi Kunj,
You should get both licenses merged by your SAP contact person for contracts in order to receive one license file only.

How would it affect the BPC BW layer? Would some cubes be hidden?

  • WLC license consolidation

    Dear Community
I manage a topology based upon wlc with different licensing sizes that is getting centralized. previously there were wlc in every location, the target is all on flexconnect with a pair of wlc at a central site.
does anyone know how to consolidate licenses, eg there is a 25 ap license in location x, can I add that count to the 100 ap license count in hq to be able to migrate the ap's ?
I was thinking of using the built in eval license for the migration duration, to get the time needed to move the licenses.
    any help is highly appreciated.

  • Can my QuickTime Pro 7 for Windows License key be transferred to my new Mac

I have used QuickTime Pro on Windows for the past 8-10 months.
I have now moved from Windows to Mac. However, the Pro registration key is invalid on the Mac because it is Windows-specific.
Will Apple convert my Windows key to a Mac key, or do I need to purchase a separate license for QT 7 Pro for Mac?

I bought the $30 Quicktime Pro license when I had windows and now I have switched to mac and want to continue to use Quiktime Pro. I put in the license and it didn't work. I later realized why as the user above has, and it makes no sense.
Apple should provide a work-around for this. It is not logical to make people pay more than once if they change operating systems but wish to continue using their online purchase. The download of the Quicktime client is free anyway, it is only the online pro license key which I paid for that costs money. So there is no reason to make people pay twice. That's bad business and while some companies might have this flaw, it is far from the standard for a well organized company.
Normally when you buy a license for software online, whether that be a game or whatever you pay for the account license and then you can download whichever client you need for free. If you switch to mac or windows or whatever, your account is still good. So with apple you can download the right client for free as with others, but if you switch to mac you must pay for the license again because they keys are not consolidated into one system, even though the client is still a free download. This makes no sense economically whatsoever as the user only wants to continue to use what they have paid for at no additional cost to they company.
Apple should either consolidate all the Quicktime Pro keys to one system or the sales department should offer a workaround of some sort. This is just not logical and for the online license key model of business and is just bad business relations as well.

  • Oracle licensing in Solaris zones

    Hi all,
I've read a few documents about Oracle licensing :
    http://www.sun.com/third-party/global/oracle/consolidation/Containers_Oracle_041305.pdf
    http://www.oracle.com/corporate/pricing/partitioning.pdf
However, there's one thing not clear to me. In Solaris zones, you dedicate threads (usually referred to as 'CPU' on Solaris) to zones. Oracle licensing is always about the number of cores used by the partition, not the number of threads. How do you convert from threads to cores?
    I'll give an example:
A T2 system with 2 processors, 8 cores each, 8 threads each (128 threads in total). You create a resource pool with 2 CPUs (threads): 1 thread from one core, and 1 thread from another one (or they are assigned like that for you) and associate a zone that runs Oracle.
I can think of two ways of calculating the number of cores used:
    1) divide the number of dedicated threads by the number of threads per core: 2 / 8 = 0.25 (optionally round it up to 1) -- This is how IBM does its licensing.
    2) count the number of physical cores that are being used by the zone. In this case this is 2, as the threads are not running on the same core.
Can anyone help me figuring this out?
    Thanks!
    Regards,
    Mathieu

    Hi Dezutterm,
I'm not a sales guy, but from how I understand things... you've already figured it out yourself:
    dezutterm wrote:

Can anyone help me figuring this out?Like you've seen, Oracle cares about how many cores are running Oracle software, not threads (from "Processor" definition here: http://www.oracle.com/corporate/pricing/technology-price-list.pdf). If you have 2 cores running Oracle software, you take "2" and multiple by the Core Processor Licensing Factor for that model of CPU (http://www.oracle.com/corporate/contracts/library/processor-core-factor-table.pdf) which for a T2 is 0.25... meaning you need 2 x 0.25 = 0.5 processor licenses. If you would have used both threads from the same core, you would need 0.25.
If this isn't correct, somebody please let us know, thanks!

  • SQL Licensing query

One of my Application Team wants to Install SQL 2012 EE
    in Development Server
for Sharepoint Application and they have got
share point License for it. They
are also having MSDN License. Now the
Question is, Can I Instal SQL 2012 EE
    for Sharepoint application in
Dev Server using MSDN License? or Do I have to
    purchase seperate
license to Install SQL 2012 EE in Dev Server?

We need to be little cautious about below pointers too:
First point: About AlwaysOn Availability Group Primary and Replicas should be cautiously set and also failover part must be very distinct so that failover should not be effected. How about Replicas and Primary, are they on same IP segment or different, as
you are saying DR, so they must be on separate IP segment.
For details, please check below link:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff929171.aspx
    Second Point:
For AlwaysOn, you will need license for EE edition.
Also, you can get this done using standard edition too for AlwaysOn:
    Check below statement for reference:
Microsoft would love if everyone purchased SQL Server 2012 Enterprise for all their database applications, but the reality is that not every database application needs it. You need to take a long hard look at the applications that'll be placed on the database
server you're consolidating to see if any of those applications actually need the Enterprise edition. Although having features such as AlwaysOn Availability Groups, online index rebuilding, and table partitioning are nice, typically tier 3 applications and
even some tier 2 applications don't need these features, so the Standard edition can run these applications without issue.
    got from below link:
    http://sqlmag.com/database-administration/7-considerations-server-consolidations
So you need to priorities your requirement.

  • Transfer WISM Access Point license to another type of controller

    Guys,
Is it possible to transfer Access Point license from existing wism to another type of controller ?
For example my client have existing wism with support for 300 access point and the plan will be migrated to Cisco WLC 5508, can the access point license transfer from existing wism to new Cisco WLC 5508, so i just buy Cisco WLC 5508 with minimum access point (12 license) and get license transfer from existing wism (300 license) so the total 312 license.
Is it possible to do that ? If not what the best scenario (for value) for hardware choice for controller if my customer want to migrate to new hardware ?

  • What is the best option to stop consolidation for a certain group of items

We are in a business where we regularly handle classified and secret items. Only few resources are cleared to handle such SKUs. Information on the credentials of such employees are not in Oracle and is a constraint that needs to be considered.
What we have thought of is consolidating standard items in one LPN but keeping the secret item(s) as a separate LPN. This way, we can ensure only cleared employees handle the special material.
    (1) In Oracle, the controlled items have an attribute telling us their code.
    (2) Moreover, the LPN for classified item will always start with X-.
In the putaway rule, restriction 1 looks like Item Security = Classified. Restriction 2 looks like License Plate Number LIKE X-%. However, I am only wondering how to consolidate these special items separately without commingling with the ordinary ones. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Sanjib

    Hi,
Define 2 different types of locators. One set of locators are meant for classified items and other is for secret items.
Classify the Locator using attribute to map it in the System.
Put away rules can be created by using these attributes by comparing with the item classification attribute.
So that it always suggest the locators based on the classification.

  • WLC-5508 License Moves

    Hello,
My network has 26 WLC's. 11 of them are 4402's, the rest are 5508's. 4 of the 5508's are the mobility anchors for the guest traffic. This summer we are removing the 4402's and re-arranging. 6 of the locations will be converted to Meraki. The goal at the end of the summer is to have these locations switched to Meraki and the 5508's consolidated. They will be set up at 4 sites. 1 site just a guest controller. The other 3 will have 3 5508's. 1 for mobility anchor, 1 for the AP's in the sector, 1 as a failover. I have been planning this setup and came upon a question. How do I consolidate the licenses on the 5508's? I have enough from the Meraki locations to comfortably support our AP's, just not per 5508.

Indeed. The only possibilities are 100/100 or 100/0.
    100/100 means, it's a 100 ap license and it's activated.
100/0 means that it's a 100 ap liecnse but it's not activated on the WLC.
I don't see a way of only activating half of the AP count of one license (100/50 for example). I don't think that this is possible.

  • Can I exceed the license count on a 5508 series WLAN controller?

    Scenario:
5508 WLC licensed for 100 APs.
Currently have 78 APs on the controller.
Two buildings coming online this week, but there was a snafu with purchasing and license upgrade still in progress. 92 APs total between them.
I looked at the license on the WLC, and in there it has something listed for 500, but unused, or something like that, along with my 100 AP license in use.
I have never tried this, which is why I'm asking.  What happens if I power up all those new access points?  Will they join the WLC and run for 90 days or something to that effect?  What is that 500 AP license?  A demo?
    Thanks in advance.

You are talking about the onboard factory evaluation licenses. You can put these in 'high' and resolve your deficiency while you get your perm licenses.
    See below ..
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/7-4/configuration/guides/consolidated/b_cg74_CONSOLIDATED/b_cg74_CONSOLIDATED_chapter_011.html#d99529e920a1635
    Activating an AP-Count Evaluation License
Information About Activating an AP-Count Evaluation License
If you are considering upgrading to a license with a higher access point count, you can try an evaluation license before upgrading to a permanent version of the license. For example, if you are using a permanent license with a 50-access-point count and want to try an evaluation license with a 100-access-point count, you can try out the evaluation license for 60 days.
AP-count evaluation licenses are set to low priority by default so that the controller uses the ap-count permanent license. If you want to try an evaluation license with an increased access point count, you must change its priority to high. If you no longer want to have this higher capacity, you can lower the priority of the ap-count evaluation license, which forces the controller to use the permanent license.
    Note
To prevent disruptions in operation, the controller does not switch licenses when an evaluation license expires. You must reboot the controller in order to return to a permanent license. Following a reboot, the controller defaults to the same feature set level as the expired evaluation license. If no permanent license at the same feature set level is installed, the controller uses a permanent license at another level or an unexpired evaluation license.

  • User Type (Dialog , Communication etc) can impact on SAP User Licensing

    Dear Expert,
The User Type (Dialog, Communication, System etc) can impact on SAP User Licensing.

    Dear Nagendra,
with reference to below sentense from your referred link
    " Consolidating Contractual User Types

With this procedure, you consolidate the contractual user types of the individual users. The LAW takes account of the fact that certain contractual user types are already contained in others. In this way, license costs are only incurred for the inclusive user types of the user."
When I go User Classification Display screen, under Contractual User Type column all my 150 users are marked "Operational" but for those which I defined as System / Communication User are defined any contractual user type.

  • Oracle licensing question- per server or instance?

We have 2 vendor/3rdparty applications that uses oracle database and purchased oracle licenses for both. They used to run on separate servers. Last year we consolidated these two oracle instances on a single server. Now we are looking to add a 3rd and 4th vendor/3rdparty application using oracle database. All require Oracle 9i Standard.
Is the oracle licence valid for the server and all instances running on it ?
    or
Is the oracle license valid per instance? In other words, are we required to purchase a 3rd and 4th license for the new application instances being added?

Oracle Database licensing is based on named user OR on number of processors. See http://www.oracle.com/corporate/pricing/databaselicensing.pdf

  • LVM Licensing

    Hi Folks,
we are planning to buy LVM. Before I reach out to my management for money, I want to have a rough estimate, here is what I got as a definition on how it is licensed.
are defined as the primary application server used for
central application services of the managed SAP application, including the
enqueue and message services (e.g. the central instance), any SAP Web AS
instances associated with the managed SAP application that is not the central
instance (e.g. dialog instances), the primary database of the managed SAP
application (e.g. database instance), or any occurrences of TREX or LiveCache
associated with the managed SAP application.
For the copy/clone/refresh option, only the primary system database of the
source systems are counted. In cases where multiple databases are configured
for the managed systems (e.g. shadow DB, DB cluster, LiveCache, etc.), then
only one database is counted, regardless of which ones or how many are
    configured.
For third-party (e.g. non-SAP applications) and custom developed applications
the entire application is defined as a single LVM instance in SAP NetWeaver
Landscape Virtualization Management, regardless of the software architecture
    for that application.
Though this is a very specific definition, I have couple of doubts on how they license HA and Clustered scenarios.
For example, we have our DB are SQL Server and are consolidated on a few High capacity servers and use Availability Group Mirroring and also our central services are configured using Windows failover cluster. In this scenario, only one instance is active at one time(both for DB and CS). Most software are licensed
for only one active instance, not sure how LVM will license in such scenarios. Also is there is a difference between production and non-production scenarios.
    regards
    Yogesh

I am not looking for license cost but how to calculate number of license. I believe if I am having trouble, it will definitely clarify for others.
