VM disk files - individual files or one larger one?

A general question.
If I required a Windows server with 3 x 100Gb disks (c,d & e) then would it be best practice to create 3 separate 100Gb vm disk files or 1 x 300Gb vm disk file and then partition in Windows?
Thanks

My input is based from SIOC perspective (Storage IO control):
If you have 3 virtual disks separately for running 3 different application in your VM, you can set IOPS shares across these 3 virtual disk & enable SIOC on the datastore from which these disks are provisioned. In case of IO contention, IOPS will be distributed across disks based on set IOPS shares.  If you can procure all 3 vmdks from 3 different datastores, it will also help you to get better IOPS.
Also when there is SDRS enabled in your environment, with 3 separate virtual disk, SDRS gets more opportunities of both space & IO load balancing.  (It is not mean that we always should create more number of smaller VMDKs , it depends).
I am not aware on how IOPS distribution works inside windows.

  • Multiple property files, or one large one

I am just starting internationalization on a Java application, and am externalizing my Strings into property files. My question is: what is better, to store all the Strings in one large property file (making it easier to edit, and reduce duplicates) or to have a property file for each GUI Widow/Dialog etc. My concern with one large file is that there may be a performance hit?

The java internalization tutorial tells you some of the advantages of using several resource bundles instead of one:

  • Mosaic - A bunch of different small pictures make one big one

Is there a good software title or plug in for photoshop that will allow me to make a mosaic picture, (the ones where a bunch of smaller pictures fit together to make one large one)?
I googled it but all I could find was online services that do it online for you over the internet. I would like the actual softwre.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Paul W.

I tried it with standard .jpgs from two different sources. My camera and photos from a professional photographers photo shoot so I do not think it is that. The photos I used worked fine with the Mac OSX screensaver mosaic...
Also, When I selected a small amount of photos it did not complete the image. It looked like nothing but random small pics with a ton of white space around them. When I selected a lot it crashed. Also, it always stops at about 78% complete. I was weary as to how well it would work being free and all.
That being said, if there is one that works really well (as in as good as the Mac OSX mosaic screensaver) I would buy it. I just cant find it.
    Thanks for the suggestion though

    Hi mshields1162,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
First, you may want to choose to have the sidebar displayed for familiarity:
    iTunes 11: Frequently used features
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5649
Afterwards, your device should be displayed if connected:
We'll want to click on it, and choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
Afterwards, you'll have the option to sync either the entire music library (for your first iPod), or "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" (for the secondary device). Upon selecting this option, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. For audiobooks, you may need to do the above in the "Books" section. For a visual instruction on how to do this, see the following:

  • How would you do this?  CD tracks from one large audio file

I just recorded in a live concert into Soundtrack Pro. The file was recorded at 16bit & 44.1KHz. I want to make a CD of this without any gaps. I am curious how to put in markers/CD tracks so that I can jump to each song.
Anyone know of a way to do this without breaking all the audio up into individual files?
    Thanks!
    Gary

Afaik, there's no way to do it in STP without doing independent audio files for each track. In theory, you could create an audio file for each track, don't have any space between each track and burn your CD DAO (Disk-At-Once) and everything should be fine. However, I'd rather have one long file and just put markers where you want the track indexes. If you have Waveburner, you can do this with it. If you don't, Peak can do this as well but my new favorite software for that job is Wave Editor:

    At 79$, it's a no-brainer deal!

  • I have three websites in one file. How do I separate them into three individual files?

I have three websites in one file (Domain.Sites2). How do I separate them into three individual files without taking the site down or loosing files?

Duplicate the domain file 3 times (keeping the orignal as a backup).  Name each domain file for the website you want it to contain.  Then open each domain file and delete the two sites you don't want it it.
Since you're running Mt. Lion you'll need to read the following in order to be able to open the different domain files.
In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Can't check out one file individually

    Hi
I am on Dreamweaver CS5 on PC and have this weird problem where when I click on an individual file on the "Remote Server" side of the file menu and then press the "Get" icon - Dreamweaver keeps asking me "Are you sure you want to check out the entire site?". The only available options at this point are Ok and Cancel.
Anybody experienced this problem before? I have no way of checking out individual files!
    Cheers
    Graham

Are you the only one working on this site?  If so, you should disable the check-in/check-out option as it really has no benefit UNLESS you are working from several different locations and are concerned about version control.
Have you tried just double clicking on the local file instead of your procedure?  That will always force the GET and CO of the remote file.

  • Append PDF files to create one large file

This is what I would like to do:
I have a .rar folder with numerous files in it.
Within the main folder, there are about 10 subfolders.
Each of these subfolders has about 15 PDF documents in them.
I would like to take all 150 (15 PDF's x 10 subfolders) PDF documents and append them into one large PDF document.
They are all in order. How could I accomplish this in LabVIEW?

    Go to Solution.

I made this one a while ago.
Enter the path to the directory containing your pdf files.
    Enter a pattern (ex. *.pdf).
Enter a name for the file to be created.
Run the VI.  It'll  fill the array with the files that match your pattern.
Enter the page numbers from each file that you want in in the output file into the Pages controls.
Hit "Go".  It'll build your pdf with the selected pages using pdftk and System Exec.
You'll need to modify it to handle your use-case, but it should be easy (unless .rar indicates you're not working in Windows!)

  • Can I create many short rough cuts from one large vob or mts file?

If so, how?  I am new to editing and using CS6 Premier Pro and Prelude.

As JStrawn points out, Importing the full Clip into the Project, but only using what you need from it, where you need it, has no drawbacks. The actual AV file is NOT physically input to the program, in any way. What happens with an Import, in very simple terms, is that PrPro links to that file, where it resides on your system, when you do the Import. There is only a link to that AV file, and that is written into the PRPROJ (the Project file) file in XML language. The file stays where it was, and only a line, or two of code is written. That is why a PRPROJ file is so small, compared to a media file - it's only lines of code, and contains zero media. Even Titles, which ARE included in the PRPROJ file, are but instructions, until one Exports.
The three methods mentioned above are really quite similar, but just reflect a slightly different workflow. I like the Source Monitor and setting the In & Out Points, then just dragging (I guess I mouse more than use keyboard shortcuts) an Instance of that file, now Trimmed, onto my Timeline. There are a few times, when I do use the Razor, but not that often. I seldom use the Trim Monitor w/ it's keyboard shortcuts, but many could not live without that - personal choices.
What one sees on the Timeline are representations of the various segments of that original longer Clip. But they are basically for display - to give the editor a visual to work with. Those Clip Instances do not yet really exist, and are only XML instructions. When one goes to Export the Timeline, PrPro reads those instructions, follows the link to that original file, and extracts the data that it is instructed to use, and essentially copies just THAT data to the new file, that PrPro is outputting. It is at that point, that something new exists, created from the chosen data in that original file, processed through the instructions written to the PRPROJ file.
Now, there ARE some times, where one would want to create Sub-Clips, or even Export the Trimmed Clips as separate, discrete files, but from what I gather, you do not have a need for that, so you can save yourself a couple of steps.
One possible use would be if one is hardpressed for HDD space, and they wished to actually cut up the long file, Export to individual files, and then Delete that original file. However, and even there, one could use the above techniques to edit the long file, and Export that edited version as a separate file, then Deleting that original longer file. Caveat - if one does that, then that Project is basically "done," as the Imported media file, the original long one, would no longer exist, as it has been Deleted.
Good luck, and hope this helps,
    Hunt

I have done an icloud backup on my iPad mini. I now need to get back one of the iMovie videos that I backed up. How do I restore one individual file?

You can't. When you restore from a backup it will restore everything in the backup. You might be able to find a third party app that will allow you to extract individual files from an iTunes backup, but not with an iCloud backup.

  • Trying to split one large audio file into tracks

    Hi;
Awhile ago I mistakenly imported a CD into iTunes, as one large audio file, containing all 10 tracks. Now I'd like to know how to split this file back into it's separate tracks, and re-import into iTunes.
    Any thoughts?
    TIA.

MP3 editor is a lossless editor for MP3 files.
-> Fission, will do lossles editing of AIFF, WAV, MP3, AAc and Apple Lossless.
You can do it yourself but the songs will be re-encoded (not lossless) but may not be a big deal.
On the song, right click - get info. Click the Options tab and set the Start-Stop times for the first song.
Then select the song, menu Advanced - Create AAC version {or whatever is selected in iTunes prefs -General - Importing}.
This will create a new copy of the song between the time markers. Select the new song, righ click - get info and update the song title.
Then on the original song, set Start-Stop times for the second song and menu Advanced - Create AAC version the for the 2nd song.
Do this for all the songs in the original file.

  • In iPhoto, can I file individual events from one year into one main event withouthout m muddling them up?ing them up

In iPhoto, can I file individual events from one year into one main event without muddling them up?

Perhaps I misunderstood you. You want to have a hierarchy
    Folder: 2000
->Contains Event for January, February, etc
    Folder 2001
-> Contains Event for January, February etc
That sort of thing? Well with Events, no you can't. Yes you can do that with Albums, but not Events.
That said, it's a pretty limited way of organising your photos - in fact you might as well just use folders in the Finder. You can find the photos from any year, month, day with the Calendar tool. Simply click on the Search icon on the bottom, then on the the wee drop down and select the calendar tool.
Want the photos from a particular range - say, June 11 1999 to September 30 2001? Then a Smart Album will do that.
But the problem is that it's often hard to remember the year/month something happened. Did we go to Disney in 1997 or 98? There are other more useful ways that make your snaps more searchable.
Here's a canned answer that I offer that suggests some of the richer organising possibilities of iPhoto. It might spark something.
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

I recently switched from PC to Mac and am able to find and transfer most of the larger files of music to iTunes, but there are about 750 songs that are held in sub-files that require me to dig in and transfer them one by one to iTunes.. I've tried transferring the parent folders, but it doesn't seem to work.  Does anyone know of a more efficient way of getting iTunes to dig into the subfolders and transfer the music without me having to go one by one?

  • Performance question RE: using Lightroom 2 on a local disk to access files on a server

    Hello,
I am considering moving to a server-based platform for my digital images.  That would allow me to go from linking together 18 external hard drives (500 GB to 1 TB) to accessing a single server to get to all of my information.
I currently have 4 Mac Pro towers with individually licensed copies of LR2.  My "Master Catalog" has over 300,000 images in it that I am referencing.
Are there any performance restrictions to accessing, say, 12 terabytes (and growing daily) of images on a server from one catalog?  Each of the 4 Mac Pros has a copy of the catalog that is synchronized between them.  Right now, in our current setup, we have to swap the external drives between the individual towers in order to have everyone work simultaneously.
Is it possible to have 4 computers with individual catalogs running simultaneously on their local disks access the same server for reading/writing information?
I have heard a rumor that this type of constant read/write on a server is actually bad for it, and can cause corruption, but it seems to me as though this is the exact purpose of a server, so that idea strikes me as odd.
My biggest concern about all of this is that there will be some sort of limitation (performance or otherwise) in LR2 that will keep me from implementing this server-based setup.
    Any thoughts?

    bceugene wrote:
Yes, it makes it slower. That's what I was saying. I don't find it hard to find things spread across two catalogs instead of one. I'd much rather have two catalogs with 150k each than one with 300,000.
James, have you tried ACDSee Pro? It lists IPTC metadata in the traditional OS "details" mode, which in my experience is much faster, easier to use, and analyze than LR. I love LR, but if I need to get an overview of the metadata in a set of files, ACDSee is much more effective and efficient. If you save to xmp automatically from LR, ADCSee dynamically updates the new XMP acroos its whole catalog. It's allowed me to get a handle on metadata across large sets of files in ways that are not possible with LR.
And personnaly if I had 300K raw files I would not to additional burden them with XMP sidecar files and the constant auto write from LR. To me that would be worse than one large DB file!
