VM, LINUX RAC on Win XP

Hello all
I'm truly a noob. I have a 32 bit XP OS that I plan to install 2 VMs - each running Enterprise Linux 5 Release 5. It will most likely have bad performance; but that's all I can afford right now as a student.
The plan is to have 2 VMs and hopefully a 'self-educated' 2 functional nodes RAC system as the end result.
I have started by going to to http://edelivery.oracle.com/ and currently downloading VM and Enterprise Linux; but, thought if anyone can give me any guidance in terms of step by step on how to accomplish 2 nodes RAC on VMs or any other information that you think might be important and great knowledge to have
any help is much appreciated.
thanks.

Thanks sb.
I also found http://www.dbasupport.com/oracle/ora10g/RACingAhead0101.shtml . (Thought might help anyone that stumble on this thread in the future.)

  • VM, RAC on Win XP

I created a new thread in Database General forum (VM, LINUX RAC on Win XP before I found this forum. Admin, please excuse the double post; but, I figure I will get more appropriate response here.
As mentioned in that thread, I'm a newbie and I'm trying to learn and install a 2 node VM RAC system on my Win XP.
I am looking for any guidelines, any step by step on how to achieve that.
    What I have done:
I am downloading files from http://edelivery.oracle.com
    1) Downloaded Enterprise Linux Release 5 Update 5 Media Pack for x86 (32 bit)
    2) Downloaded Oracle VM Server 2.2.1
    Now I am wondering
    1) what's the difference between Oracle VM Manager 2.2.0+ and Oracle VM Server 2.2.1+ ??
    2) What's Paravirtualized Drivers for Windows Guests (XP/2003/2008/Vista) 1.0.11 - 32bit/64bit+
    3) What's VM Templates+?
    4) What's the difference between Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 Update 2 template - PV Large x86 (32 bit)+ and Oracle Database 11.1.0.6 for x86 (32 bit) with Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.2+ and Grid Control managed Oracle Database 11.1.0.7 for x86 (32 bit) with Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3+
My guess is VM Template (example: Oracle Database 11.1.0.6 for x86 (32 bit) with Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.2*) is VM that comes with DB11.1.0.6 on Linux 5.2?? if that's the case, then shouldn't I be able to achieve what I need to do with just installing twice Oracle Database 11.1.0.6 for x86 (32 bit) with Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.2*??
Sorry for the long winded question. Truly confused.
Again, any help or pointers or comments or suggestions are great_.

Oracle VM Server runs on a bare-metal system: it is the operating system. It most emphatically does not run on top of Linux or Windows or anything else.
If you are just trying to learn about RAC, RDBMS, and such, go get Oracle (Sun) VirtualBox. VirtualBox runs on top of Windows, so you can create RAC virtual guests using that. This would not be an option if you wanted a production configuration, supported by Oracle.
There are two tricky points: the VM guests should use the host-only networking feature of vbox for the internode communications. This is mode is easy to configure and may even be the default.
The other tricky point is to define a separate virtual disk as shared storage. You'll want to do this so there will be common storage between the virtual guests. Again, this is possible but just non-default.
Google can be your friend on this; there are several step-by-step HOWTO's to get this running last time I looked.

  • How to create redlog and control file at ASM in linux RAC

    Hi Experts,
I will to maintance a oracle 10g database at ASM as RAC iin linux red hat.
i am a new person with some question.
nornally speaking, oracle recommadition for oracle 10g database as
create 3 copy fills for control file
create at least 2 redo log with mirror files in system.
    However, I checked find
redlog file is at FRA place +FLSdisk1 and no mirror
control file is at FRA place--+FLSDISK1/
    datebase file at ‘+DATA1/
There are no mirror for relog.
Go to EM, I also could not find place to enter file name.
We use ASM to hold database to support RAC.
Do i need to create redlog file as
    ALTER DATABASE ADD LOGFILE GROUP 1 ('+FLSdisk1/sale/onlinelog/REDO01.LOG','+FLSdisk1/sale/onlinelog/REDO01_mirror.LOG') SIZE 1000M reuse;
my boss told me that ASM is reliable.
Do you need to creat more directory to arrange redlog and control files in ASM for RAC system?
FRA is a good place to store control file and redlog file ?
    Thanks

ASM is reliable but a smart DBA is very careful. If ASM is doing mirroring this is like RAID doing mirroring. What happens if you accidentally delete one copy ... the other one disappears instantly. Not a good idea.
With respect to redo logs you need a minimum of three groups, two members, and one thread per instance. So a 2 node cluster should, at a minimum have 12 physical files.
Not mirroring the redo logs, assuming multiple members, is not as critical.

  • SAN reboot for oracle DB at ASM in linux RAC

    Hi Experts,
we use 10.2.0.4 database in ASM at oracle RAC in red hat 5 linux.
we use 3 directoey ( asm, crs, and database)
I got notes that SAN box (support SAM in database) will be reboot.
Under this condition, what do i need to do? shutdown instance? database? crs? or asm instance?
    Thanks for your help?

what means is about start all oracle related services in sequence?CRS will start the complete Oracle cluster s/w cluster for you - ASM, RAC, nodeapps, etc.
Usually, the only effort required is simply hitting the reset/power on button - as the o/s will boot, CRS will start and it will in turn bring up the s/w stack. No manual intervention required. (unless you on purpose configured it differently)
Based on Billy suggestion, can I use srvctl stop nodeapps -n all and #ORA_CRS_HOME/bin/crsctl stop crsNo - my suggestion is that before the SAN maintenance window period start, you do a "+shutdown -h now+" on all cluster nodes to halt/powerdown each and every RAC server.
And after the SAN maintenance period is over, and the SAN available again, ssh into the LoM (Lights Out Management) console of each server and do a "+start SYS+" (or equivalent) to powerup the server.
In other words, with the SAN down/busy rebooting/undergoing maintenance, I would not want to have my RAC servers up and running as there is no storage layer to run them on. IMO, it is a lot safer to have these servers powered down to during such a maintenance period.
PS. I have even had the odd case that during SAN maintenance power cables being pulled, Interconnect switches accidentally reset and so on - or you could have some bright spark also shutting down the aircon with the SAN and your RAC servers suffering heat problems and potential damage while running. So my question is - why should I take the risk of keeping my RAC servers up when the storage layer is not there and the cluster is broken and useless? Surely it makes a lot more sense to power down those servers too and then only power them on again when the maintenance period is over and the SAN (and data centre) is in a proper running state again.

  • Preferred Hardware Plattform for  Linux RAC Cluster

What ist the preferred Hardware Platform
for using LINUX with Oracle RAC - Cluster solution ?
What do you prefer Suse or Redhat ?
Is there a tested Hardware Environment from Oracle Support ?
    Thanks

You have the disk space, but not the memory, even discounting the memory for the Oracle VM hypervisor, OEL/RH5 is going to take at least 1G to run. So, with your base OS, hypervisor, Linux and Oracle (clusterware and DB), it may be possible, but I believe you would be swapping so much you would have terrible performance. I would look at a MINIMUM of 3GB if not 4GB RAM to try this configuration.
    Cheers

  • Migrate Oracle 9i/windows database to Oracle 10gR2/Linux RAC

    Hi,
What is the most appropriate strategy to migrate a database from oracle 9i on windows to another server having Oracle 10gR2 RAC on SUSE Linux 9?
    Thanks
    Satish

If the database size is not very large, then export/import would work. Make sure the data files are copied using binary mode. (or run the export from the 10gR2 installation and connecting to the Windows 9i instance.) Create all the Roles and Tablespaces and Users (and the grants) on 10g prior to the import.

First, I have to say this is my first cluster with Oracle products. Our enviroment has two HP DL380 G5 with Emulex dualport adapters, everything connected over two SAN switches to HP EVA4400. I found out, that datapump is saving files to the Linux Server (where database is). When i define 'C:\DPDIR' it doesn't recognize it because there is no such directory on Linux.
How can I save datapump export dumpfile on Windows?

expdp can only create dump file on DB Server system itself.

  • SAN for ocr and vote file  for Linux RAC

    Hi Experts,
Based on Oracle document, i have to create 2 devices for the OCR and 3 for the VOTE in RAC.
However, my boss think SAN maybe mirroe OCR and Vote file. It is enough for 1 location in SAN storage. It does not matter how many driver sidplay for user.
Actually it is only one SAN in back side.
Any Explain for OCR/VOTE file in SAN?
    Thnaks
    JIm

The idea to have these multiplex copy is to reduce the single point of failure, non the less, that's reason you build RAC in the first place isn't?
So if it's possible you'd better have redundancy on physical disk level (LUN etc) then logic level (volume, partition etc) then file level.
Well I agree modern SAN are pretty reliable and had built in redundancy on physical and logic level, but if you only have single vote disk and OCR, your RAC is going to fail right away when vote disk and OCR has problem. The chances are if your OCR and Vote disk has logical corruption, the corruption is going to populated to your mirrors. Even if your mirror is good you still need to get mirror copy to replace working copy and restart cluster during the time your RAC is offline.
With more than one OCR and voting disk, your RAC is likely to survive single OCR/vote disk failure, so you can fix the problem while RAC online.

  • Linux RAC NODES Rebooting

We have 2-NODE RAC Cluster running GC since about 3months. But lately (last 3weeks) we have seen NODE2 reboot 5-6 times with CSSD errors:
Oracle clsomon failed with fatal status 12
    Oracle CSSD failure 134.
Oracle CRS failure. Rebooting for cluster integrity.
This Environment is RHEL4 U4 with all RAC components running 10.2.0.3. Has anyone encountered the same.
    thanks

    Chandra,
We looked into ocssd.log and didn't find anything unusual.
Below is log on the NODE failed.

If you look at the log on the failed node it failed at around 11:53 per OS log and after the reboot it took back the resources and will run for couple of days without any issue and then again same happens.

    Hi Aryanadonis  ,
    Thanks for posting here
According what you mentioned, I thought system can’t located command programs path when you perform this command .
Seems that you can perform these command with assign path, what I thought is this issue occurred because wrong environment variable setting.
I noticed that you have posted the Environment Variable result here, I checked and highlight wrong values that could cause this issue. please correct it and try perform
    command again.
