Vm tools in ACS 5.1

Hello
Can we install the Vmware Tools VMware on a Virtual Machine who supporte virtual appliance with the ACS 5.1  .
And if it possible, have you the procedure.
Thank you
Christophe

Hello, Christophe,
It's not recommended and unsupported to install VMWare tools with ACS 5.x. It could work, but this configuration will be unsupported by Cisco TAC.

  • Installing VMware Tools on the ACS 5.2 VM Appliance

A cursory glance doesn't reveal any instructions on how to do this, does anyone know of documentation out there on how to insall VMware tools on the VM?

    Hi Chris,
Unfortunately wmware tools cannot be install on ACS 5.x. Developers are already aware of the situation and there is an enhancement feature request.
CSCtg50048    Add support for VMWare Tools to ACS 5
    Symptom:
VMWare Tools support is not present on ACS 5.
    Conditions:
    This affects ACS 5.
    Workaround:
    None.
No ETA for the enhancement. The next ACS version will be ready in summer this year, please look for it around that time.

  • ACS VMware vm and tools

      Let me preface this with
the fact I am a VMsysadmin (I know boo, hiss) versus a network manager.  Recently one of our network managers requested we provision an Vmware 4.1 vm for his use to load ACS 5.1.
Everything is good except that I have no clue how he is supposed to load vmware tools.  Vmware tools provides additional functionality, better RAM management, copy/paste etc.  While this may not be a huge deal for the network manager, it is a huge deal for me...without the vmware tools this could pur undue pressure on RAM and cpu cycles.
I have done some searching and have not found any thing that indicates a means to install these tools.  If anyone has any ideas, thoughts, a link to a KB I missed...I would appreciate it greatly!

    Shawn,
There is no way to load the VMWare tools on ACS 5.x at this time.

  • Problem in ACS 5.2 on Virtual Machine

    Hi Everyone !
I have a problem with the interface on the ACS 5.2 , The inferface work fine but going down unexpectedly and only if I make (for example) a ping to the default gateway it come back.
Please somebody can help me ??
    Regards.
    Rodrigo

We say that it's not tested by cisco, You will be able to install ESX 4.1 just fine but there might be some issues with services/processes . In that case TAC won't support those issues. Vsphere is a Vmware  managment tool. ACs 5.x doesn't support/run on vspehere. ACS 5.3 should  officially support ESX 4.1
    Virtual Machine Requirements
The minimum system requirements for the virtual machine must be similar  to the CSACS-1120 Series appliance hardware configuration.
Table 6-1 lists the minimum system requirements to install ACS 5.2 on a VMware virtual machine.
    Table 6-1     Minimum System Requirements
    Requirement Type Minimum Requirements
    CPU
    Intel Core2; 2.13 GHz
    Memory
    4 GB RAM
    Hard Disks
    500 GB of disk storage
    NIC
    1 GB NIC interface
    Hypervisor
    VMware ESX 3.5 or 4.0
Note You  can use VMware Server 2.x only for an evaluation version of ACS 5.2.  For an evaluation version, the disk space must be between 60 GB and 500  GB. Evaluating ACS 5.2
For evaluation, ACS 5.2 can be installed in a VMware Server 2.x virtual  machine or a VMware ESX virtual machine. When evaluating ACS 5.2, you  can configure less disk space in the virtual machine, but a minimum disk  space of 60 GB is required.

  • Powerbroker and VM tools in Linux

I used a 'run script in a guest' VCO workflow to run Powerbroker command to join an AD domain.
This workflow, will run the script and then keep checking to see if the script has finished executing.
What happens is after the Powerbroker command (domainjoin-cli) runs successfully, the login credentials used after that fails.
The reason I believe is it changes the /etc/pam.d/vmtoolsd file to use the AD login mechanism of Powerbroker.
    So, this workflow fails.
Is there a way to overcome this?
I know this question truely belongs to the Powerbroker forums. But trying my luck to see if this was a known issue (i did a search but no luck in this forum)
    Thanks

  • Vmware tools for cisco acs 5.3

to backup an ACS 5.3 vm running on ESXi 5.0 our backup admin requested to install vmware tools on the acs server.
How to do this - if possible?

    Hi Joe
yes the vmware HA works for us and is enough if you can live with risk of data corruption. (which we never experienced up to now...)
In our case it's good enough to recover from the backup instead of adding more complexity.

Hello, i have the same issue, migration utility can get acs4.x database password, entering the correct password does not change the errror message: "05-07-2014 16:19:41 MigrationApplicationCLI.getUserInformation(MigrationApplicationCLI.java:953)ERROR - Could not Invoke ACS 4 Password read system.Error at C:\Work\ACS5x\ccweb_views\dgash_acs5_0_lenovo\vob\nm_acs\acs\mgmt\migration\DbPassword\Password.c line 1265, API calle"

tried to search within the files in the migration utility directory, but no success.

  • ACS 5.3 connected to AD

So we have this problem that just started, I can replicate the issue as well, if a user makes a mistake on typing there password after 1 attempt ACS sends 3 to AD locking out the user.
In a putty or secureCRT session after 1 password failed attempt, I am unable to retry with that same session. Any thought suggestions.
The issue seems to be that after 1 bad password attempt, from the client side I am unable to get another try.

  • ACS loses connection with AD occasionally after upgrade from 5.2 to 5.3.0.40

ACS had been integrated with Active Directory before ACS upgrade to 5.3. After the ACS 5.3 upgrade users aren’t able to login to AAA devices occasionally. Error message is:
    {AuthenticationResult=Error; Type=Authentication; Authen-Reply-Status=Error; }
24429 Could not establish connection with Active Directory
At the same time, when this issue occurs, ACS connection to AD works fine (checked with Users and Identity Stores> External Identity Stores > Active Directory “Test Connection”)

I had the same problem, I opened a Cisco TAC case and my issue was resolved.

Subject: RE: 622739355 HelpDesk#SVR328332-2 : Troubleshoot Cisco ACS 1121 v5.3 With Windows Active Directory
    Hi Ramraj,
Thanks for the link to the article, but from what I’ve seen in the logs I’m not sure that we’ve got the same root cause to the issue.
From the ACSADAgent.log files I can see log messages like:
    Aug 11 11:10:56 CSSC-TPM-DC-ACS-1 adclient[5524]: DEBUG network.state NST: SniffList: postfailsort=mykulad11p.cssc.dksh.net
Aug 11 11:10:56 CSSC-TPM-DC-ACS-1 adclient[5524]: DEBUG base.kerberos.adhelpers Encryption (id 1) is not supported by KDC. Try next in the list
Aug 11 11:10:56 CSSC-TPM-DC-ACS-1 adclient[5524]: DEBUG base.osutil Module=Kerberos : KDC refused skey: KDC has no support for encryption type (reference base/adhelpers.cpp:216 rc: -1765328370)
Aug 11 11:10:56 CSSC-TPM-DC-ACS-1 adclient[5524]: DEBUG base.adagent Unable to refresh computer credentials: KDC refused skey: KDC has no support for encryption type
This lines up with the error message that we see in the TACACS+ Authentication logs:
24493 ACS has problems communicating with Active Directory using its machine credentials.
I have come across a NETBIOS limitation (it’s not an ACS bug, but a bug has been filed for tracking and documentation purposes) that prevents two ACSs from being connected to Active Directory at the same time if the first 15 characters of their hostnames are the same. The bug ID is CSCtj62342 and its externally visible details are available here: http://tools.cisco.com/Support/BugToolKit/search/getBugDetails.do?method=fetchBugDetails&bugId=CSCtj62342
The hostname of the primary ACS is : MYMY-TPM-DC-ACS-1
The hostname of the secondary ACS is: MYMY-TPM-DC-ACS-2
From the hostnames, we can see that the first 16 characters of the hostnames are the same. What this means is that once the primary is connected to AD, after some time passes (this will depend on when the secondary goes an talks to AD) the secondary will lose its connection to AD and any authentications hitting the secondary will fail with the same error: 24493 ACS has problems communicating with Active Directory using its machine credentials.
To resolve this issue, the hostnames of the ACSs will need to be changed so that the first 15 characters of their respective hostnames are not the same. Please keep in mind that this is a NETBIOS limitation and not a software bug.

  • How to survive an ACS audit with aaa-reports!

For many organisations the Cisco Secure ACS server is the guardian of the network - controlling administrative access to routers and switches plus overseeing end network users over VPN, wireless and firewall.
Its no surprise therefore that it should come under intense scrutiny during an audit. Perhaps what is surprising is the lack on awareness over best practice for running ACS in a secure way. We'd like to help in our small way and below is a list of tips we've picked up over the years of providing reporting services for ACS.
Buy aaa-reports! Of course we would say that... But without the ability to aggregate the logs from all your ACS servers and report on the data, or use our query builder for forensic analysis, or import the ACS database to document the policy features enabled.... you'll have a hard time getting the evidence that an auditor might ask for.
Make sure ACS is logging the appropriate attributes for the reports you need to create. For example if you need to document who did what to devices in specific Network Device Groups (NDG) you must ensure this value actually gets logged. Performing ACS upgrades often sets logging configs back to their defaults.
Create a build specification for your ACS. Detail the "meta config" of your ACS so that after an emergency hardware swap-out or software upgrade you can quickly check that the ACS has the correct configuration. The build spec document should be under version control and is a useful item in itself to convince an auditor your system is well controlled.
Create a Change Control system for config changes on the ACS. Since its ACS that decides who gets access and what commands they run on your network its vital you report on the Administration Audit logs. During an audit you can then correlate entries in your change control system with actual edits recorded in the Admin Audit logs. aaa-reports! can document what all or individual ACS admins did in detail.
Retain 2 years of actual CSV log data on your reporting server. For general day-to-day reporting you dont need this amount, but during an audit you may be required to show what happened on a specific historic date. aaa-reports! multi-db feature will allow you to create a specific back-end database just for this task and import logs from the required time period. Alternatively use the aaa-reports! snapshot feature to regularly save its database state, for example quarterly. You may then connect aaa-reports! to any of the historic snapshot databases to report on the data from that quarter.
Regularly export the ACS database into aaa-reports! If you are running reports against log data from 2 years ago you also need to know what was in the ACS database at the same time - using a more recent ACS database might yield unexpected results because the configuration is likely to changed in the meantime. Usecsvsync to regularly grab the ACS database and keep them alongside the retained CSV logs for future reference.
Review the quality of ACS log data. From time to time its worth taking a look at the quality of the data getting logged. We often find customers with rogue scripts being automated on devices that cause the ACS Failed Attempts logs to become full of many MBs of "junk data" - essentially one failed attempt for each line of the script. If left to continue for months the real data starts to become more difficult to find.
In terms of specific questions that an audit will concentrate on, typically it will revolve around demonstrating that not only is there specific and adequate policy to control access to those parts of the network require it, but also to seek evidence that those policies are in fact working. In aaa-reports! we added a whole set of reports for TACACS+ Device Administration (TDA) that attempt to document the ACS policy configuration, answer questions such as "who can/cannot access devices and once connected what can they do?" and finally report on what did actually happen.
Below are some additional TDA specific tips:
Ensure services such as shell/exec are only enabled for ACS groups that really need it. The aaa-reports! TDA Group Summary report will list every ACS group and what TDA features are enabled. The TDA Group Detailreport can be used to inspect the policy in detail.
Check for user-level ovverides. In general users should always inherit policy from their group unless there is good reason. The aaa-reports! TDA User Summary report list users with group overriden configuration. The TDA User Detail report can be used to inspect what policy items are specific to the user.
Use Network Access Restrictions (NAR) to prevent login by unauthorised personnel. The first line of defence is to only allow device admin users access to routers and switches. We find some customers rely purely on command authorisation - this potentially lets anyone access the device who can authenticate. Imagine the scenario where ACS has "unknown authentication" enabled pointing at your Windows AD then answer "Who has access?". aaa-reports! can report group-by-group on device access controlled by NARs and therefore answer "Who has access to device XYZ?"
Use Device Command Sets (DCS) for command authorisation. Create a set of re-usable DCSs with meaningful names in preference to simple group-level command authorisations. ACS administration is simplified and the auditor should understand what the intent of the policy is by its name. aaa-reports! can document the both the content of each DCS and the group assignments, thereby answering the question "What commands can user X execute on device XYZ?"
Seek out and remove old ACS user accounts. aaa-reports! can report on inactive users both from examination of accounting logs and (if password aging is enabled) from the imported ACS database itself.
Learn how to use the aaa-reports! Query Builder. Despite the comprehensive set of pre-built canned reports, during an audit you are likely to be asked questions about a specific date, user or device. Knowing how to use the QB to build filter/sort and group/totalling queries will get the answers quickly. Take the random question "How many sessions did user X have on devices A, B and C on this date?" The aaa-reports! QB can easily create custom reports that filter on any number of attribute values, group by multiple columns and have calculated fields such as sum, count, average etc. If you have a working knowledge of Visual Basic 6 (VB6) its also possible to use a rich array of formatting and other VB6 functions to create additional fields.
The above list is of course by no means definitive as every customer will have their own specific needs from ACS and face different levels of compliance. Undergoing an audit is never easy, but at least with the right tools it doesnt have to be awful!

  • ACS v5.2 - Unable to update User integer attributes through File Operations

    Hi,
I have created some internal users on ACS v5.2 and added some Unsigned Integer attributes for each user. I am trying to do a bulk update of these integer attributes using the File Operation facility. However no matter what number I put on the import template it doesn't get updated and displays a "0" in the user config.
The import template is validated successfully with no errors and also the string attributes are updated correctly.
There is a sort of work around of deleting the users and adding them back in with the updated values. But this is not feasible as it would reset their passwords. I have also tried saving the csv file in Open Ofifce instead of Excel
Has any one else come across this problem?
(I am unable to see this issue in the Release notes or Bug tool kit although there is a similar issue when updating devices in CSCth68051)

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I have managed to recreate the problem to show you but it is a bit more complicated than I first thought. The problem only occurs when the integer attributes are added after the user is created.
I created a dummy user. The MTL and TLS attributes were present before the user was added. I then added the XXX and ZZZ attributes afterwards and assigned them default values. The default values show up in the GUI config.
However when I export the database to a csv file only the values of the MTL and TLS attributes show up in the export file:
I then downloaded an import template and updated the integer values for TLS,MTL, XXX and ZZZ for the dummy user:
The file imports successfully with no errors. However, when I display the user config only the MTL and TLS attributes have changed. The XXX and ZZZ attributes have stayed the same.
I thought it might be because I was assigning a default value of 0 to the new attributes but I assigned ZZZ a default value of 1 and the same thing occurred.

  • ACS database reporting permissions issue

    Hi,
I have an issue with my testing of the ACS reporting in two test environments (SCOM 2012 SP1). One has SQL installed on the same server as the MS and the other is a separate SQL install on its own server with multiple MS’s. On both SQL servers
the ACS database is running on the same server as the other SCOM databases under an instance called SCOM. When we go live the intention is to run on a separate SQL server so not sure if this would still be relevant at that point.
First off all my normal reports are running fine from the console and from SQL reporting services. My understanding is that the reports are running under different contexts at this point – the web reporting with the account I am logged in
with and from within SCOM console trying to use the data reader account.
When trying from the web reporting services or SCOM console I get -
“An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)
Cannot create a connection to data source 'dataSource1'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection)
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote
connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)”
With regard to the account I am using for the web reporting. It’s a domain admin account. However what I also did was create a global security group called “SCOMACS” and gave this group “db_datareader” permissions within SQL.
I also gave the data reader service account permissions to see if this fixed the issue from the console.
    Wonder if anyone could help?

    Hi,
This seems more like a SQL issue, please make sure your database engine is configured to accept remote connections
    • Start > All Programs > SQL Server 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Surface Area Configuration • Click on Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections • Select the instance that is having a problem > Database Engine >
Remote Connections • Enable local and remote connections • Restart instance
Please go through the below blog to troubleshoot this issue:

  • ACS 5.3 to ISE 1.2 Migration

    Hi Experts,
    Good Day!
I really need help I already did some troubleshooting but the issue I'm encountering still exists.
I am trying to migrate my ACS 5.3 to ISE 1.2 using the migration tool. I;m able to extract the data from ACS however, when I tried to import it in the ISE it shows me always the error in the attached file.
