VM with Cloud Service Billing

I just created a virtual machine, and noticed in my portal that I now also have a cloud service. 1) is that supposed to happen, and 2) if so, am I going to be billed for both a vm and a cloud service?
Mark Aurit Priest River Systems

Hey Mark,
1) Yes it is normal when you create a VM that by default it creates a Cloud Service with the same name.
- You can more than VM in a Cloud service , you would do that if you were intending to add a load balance across them for example
by default you are limited to 20 Cloud Services but this can be increased to 100 (http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/azure-subscription-service-limits/)
- Also VMs in a cloud service share the same internal DNS so can "see" each other (you still need to open up Windows firewall to get ping / other stuff working internally). Also putting them in same virtual network allows this.
2) You won't get billed extra
cheers
Andy.

  • Cloud Service Billing Question

    We are in the process of creating some Virtual Machines in Microsoft Azure. We will only be using Virtual Machines in Azure and none of the programming or other hosting features. When you create a virtual machine, you must create a Cloud
    Service, or specify one that you've already created.
    So really I have 2 questions:
    1. Will I be billed for this Cloud Service AND a VM? My understanding is that the cloud service is a only container for the virtual machines.
    2. If I am being billed, how do I know the size of the Cloud Service that I deployed? There is no option to select a size, but all the pricing information I can find on Cloud Services requires that I specify a size (A1, A2, D3, etc).
    Any information at all would be very helpful. Thanks

    Hi,
    First, we need to know the difference between cloud service and Azure VM, here is an article:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/plankytronixx/archive/2014/04/24/i-m-confused-between-azure-cloud-services-and-azure-vms-what-the.aspx, hope it helps.
    As far as I know, the cloud service contains two types of instance: web role and worker role, each role could contains multiple instances, the computers (Windows Servers) that lived in these Roles were known as “instances”. So, you could think of the instance
    as a "Virtual Machine", for example, your cloud service has one web role with two instances A0, you will be charge $22*2/mo (http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/cloud-services/),
    you could also find these pricing information from azure VM pricing (Standard tier) (http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/virtual-machines/), as my first
    post, you will not be charged twice, please note:  Cloud Services now offers two hardware options for web and worker roles: A-series and D-series.
    More detail about instance sizes.

  • A question regarding using a JDBC class to connect with cloud service database

    Hello,
    I am currently working on a small scale cloud service report where the company I chose is obviously Oracle. My question is regarding the cloud service in the following way. I was doing my report with the free trial until it just came to me that
    why not to do a small one class program with my netBeans or Eclipse that uses JDBC but I am not sure what username, password and the url to use in the connection to retrieve, manipulate and store values. Can somebody help me please if this is possible or not?
    edit: Anyone please? I have a deadline in 15.8. and could create something great until then if I get the anwser in few days

    To correct my question, I already have the oracle account and I created the cloud service trial account with database and java section.

  • Synching with cloud services causes conflict

    When working/or saving any iwork document (latest versions) in my macbook pro running either box.com sync software or cloud station sync software, I frequently get the message "This spreadsheet was changed in another application." I can choose to "revert" or "save anyway". Unfortunately, "revert" is the default choice meaning I can easily lose information if I accidently hit return. I understand that the software that syncs to these cloud services is not able to handle the format of the latest iworks documents but does anyone know a work around here? In my experience, dropbox doesn't have this problem.

    A Numbers document is actually better thought of not as a file, but as a "package" containing many files, optimized for rapid sync. If you haven't done so already, you might check out a little more how iCloud works with Numbers. They're tightly integrated. The idea seems to be to have nearly instantaneous saving and backup and sync to other devices without the user having to worry about those things. Among the benefits, other than making life easier for most users, are opportunities for collaboration across the net.  The idea of turning off autosave would work in the opposite direction.
    It's a little like having a car that already has been designed with a built-in automatic transmission that works well, and saying, I don't want to use that original design. Instead I want to be able to just change the gears by myself. Manual transmissions do have their advantages. But the car has to designed that way in the first place. Having some kind of hybrid that is automatic with an option to switch to manual might be possible (you could suggest this to Apple via your menu Numbers > Provide Numbers Feedback) but it might well end up complicating the user experience and not be a reliable design.

  • C# Console Application with Cloud Services

    Hi All,
    can anyone tell how we can host our console application on windows Azure Cloud Service OR is it possible to host Console application on Azure Cloud Service.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Pravin Dhulap

    Hi,
    A cloud service consists of one or more web roles and/or worker roles, As far as I know, we can't host console application to azure cloud service directory, however, we can convert the console application to worker role, see the detailed steps here:
    http://blogs.lessthandot.com/index.php/desktopdev/mstech/converting-a-net-console-project/ , after these steps, a Console project promoted to Azure Worker Role.

  • Unable to login to cloud services

    Is there anybody else having issues with cloud services ?
    We have 5 cloud services with SQL DB back end, from last one hour i am unable to login to any of our app running on these cloud services.
    Our services are located in Southeast Asia, all the 5 cloud services are having issues at the same time so i cant see any problem from our end.
    Status page says all the services are running okay.

    Apologize for the inconvenience, agree with you regarding this, however we are not sure if this is indeed a backend issue and in order to determine the cause and troubleshoot the issue, we will require the deployment ID and subscription details which is
    not recommended to be posted in the public forums. I would suggest you purchase a support plan and speak to a support professional who can, based on the diagnosis take appropriate actions.
    You can refer to the following link which gives information about the different support plans. You can also contact the billing/subscription team with a free ticket for more information.

  • Windows Azure Cloud Service Downtime alert

    Hi,
    One of the Cloud services that we have deployed on Windows Azure Cloud services using Azure Worker role is unexpectedly transitioning to Stopped state. There doesn't appear to be any valid reason behind this  and it runs normally after we switch to
    running state from portal.
    Is it possible to develop some alert service which informs the Administrator or configured alert users that the Cloud service has shut down ? We tried to configure the Windows Azure alert but the metrics & logging doesn't seem to match with Cloud service
    downtime. Please let us know what is the diagnositics or logging option which we should make use to come up an optimal design for the Alert system.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
    From my experience, several operations in the Service Management API permit you to manage your cloud service either by referencing a deployment by its deployment name, or by referencing the deployment environment (staging or production) in
    which the deployment is running. Refer to
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/ee460812.aspx for more information about Operations on Cloud Services, we can do lots of things via this API, in “Get Cloud Service Properties” section, it has a “RoleInstanceList” property, refer to
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/ee460806.aspx#bk_roleinstancelist for more information about
     RoleInstanceList. In this article it has PersistentVMDowntime property, the detail information as following.
    PersistentVMDowntime
    Specifies information about when the Virtual Machine has been started and stopped.
    The PersistentVMDowntime element is only available using version 2012-03-01 or higher.
    Hope this helps, if this didn’t give you help, please feel free to let me know.

  • Service Billing Engine

    Hi Experts,
    I want to know the scope of a Service Billing Engine to be created to integrate with other products like Project Management, Rental Management, Service Request and Service Contract. I want to create this SBE to be able to communicate flawlessly with above all four products. Kindly give your inputs. Precisely I would like to know how a SBE works and what are its scopes when integrated with above four products.
    Also I want to understand the invoice generation and accounting flow from Service Contract to Service billing engine and then Service Billing engine to final documentation.

  • Trouble with Cloud

    OK yesterday I chatted with a Verizon team member about issues iam having with Cloud. She walked me through the steps to resolve it, but its still not working and I think I have lost all my pics on the Cloud. The issue is I click on Cloud and all I get is a "Something went wrong" please wait and try again, if the problem persists try logging in. Nothing happens and I get the same message each time. Please someone help! The team member said she filed a ticket claim and gave me the ticket number and said I would get a confirmation by email, but I haven't received anything. She told me to clear my data on cloud and then force stop. Does anyone know if Verizon can actually get my pics back? She said they would be on their server? TIA!

        I'm so sorry to hear that you're having issues with Cloud Services, Lilbit31! It sounds like quite a bit of troubleshooting has already been done, considering a ticket has been filed. It can take 3-5 days for a ticket to be resolved. If the issue persists beyond that time, we would want to check the ticket status.

  • Network security with Oracle Database Cloud Service

    Does the Oracle Database Cloud service support SSL? Or, any form of network encryption/authentication between a client and the service across the Internet?

    Thank you Rick. I'm intending to use Oracle Database Cloud Service as a "Database-as-a-Service", however I have read that it is actually more of a "Platform-as-a-Service" offering.
    What I would like to do is to interact with the Oracle Database Cloud Service via a local JDBC client. However, from further reading, it looks like the only way to interact with the Oracle Database Cloud Service from a non-Oracle-cloud-based client is via its RESTful web services (which, as you said, support SSL).
    That is to say, I cannot simply connect to the Oracle Database Cloud Service from a local client just through JDBC alone. It looks like I would have to configure my client to make the relevant RESTful web service calls instead, and likewise configure my settings on the Oracle Database Cloud Service to make the necessary translations (from REST to SQL).
    Just to finally clarify, is my above understanding correct?

  • Having trouble with creation of a cloud service with multiple virtual machines using java sdk.

    I am creating a cloud service on azure with 2 virtual machines using java sdk API. Service created successfully.
    My input endpoint details are as follows.
    INPUT ENDPOINTS
    Head : 191.238.144.47:2400
    Head : 191.238.144.47:22
    Node0 : 191.238.144.47:43211
    For Head instance port 2400 is for HTTPS and port 22 is for SSH and for Node0 instance port 43211 is for SSH.
    But I am having problem with doing a ssh on Head instance. Sometimes it works sometimes doesn't. Same problem with HTTPS also.
    I have some application running over there but when i try to access it thru browser sometimes it works but most of the time doesn't. When I restart the instances from azure portal, its works after
    that(not always but most of the time).
    Now I am confused what is going on there. I am creating cloud service and virtual machines using java sdk and setting input endpoints also. After creation of all instances i restart every instance programmatically .
    I am not sure whether restart is required or not. It must be something to do with input endpoints only but not able to get the right thing i guess. When i do the same thing thru azure portal(creation of cloud service with virtual machines and setting up input
    end points) everything works fine but not achieving the result when implementing it by java sdk API. Please help me.

    HI Nithin,
    Thanks for your reply. I am setting the endpoints after creating my instances using update call. Here's the code snippet.
    AzureService aServ = new AzureService(session);

            // Setting end points for head node
             String name = "ssh";
             int port = 22;
             aServ.updateVMInputEndpoint(clusterName, "Head", name, port);

           String roleName = "Node";
           String tmpRoleName = "";
           for(int i=0; i<noi; i++) {
                      port = 43210+(i+1);
                      tmpRoleName = roleName + i;
                   // Creating node instance
                    aServ.createVM(clusterName, tmpRoleName, imgName, nodeType, userName, pswd);
                  // Setting end points for node instance
                   aServ.updateVMInputEndpoint(clusterName, tmpRoleName, name, port);

  • Something going on with Azure Website and Cloud Service?

    Starting this morning, my website (WordPress) could not even load with Shared Plan. When I switch it to Basic plan it is running extremely slow (25s to load a page). This is a very low traffic site (100 page views/day). Even when there is only 1 connection
    it takes 25s to load. Also, just a few minutes ago, my cloud service app is getting "A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed
    to respond xx.xxx.xx.xx:80" and my web app is down. We reboot the cloud service and the database VM and it is still showing the same error. All of our services are on the US West region.

    I managed to capture a few stack when it took long time.   It indicated waiting on mysql database.  Do replace {sitename} with your site name.   You might want to check cleardb status - see if anything
