Vmware clusters and L2 Spanning

Server  virtualization and coud computing are the driving forces behind the  need to span a network's L2 domain. This is where TRILL comes into play.  You get horizontal scale-out in a flattened network, with multiple L2  forwarding paths powered by TRILL.
The  question I have is just how far across the data center does the L2  domain really need to span? Lets say this is a vmware environment. The  latest version of vSphere allows up to 32 hosts per cluster.  Furthermore, it is only within that 32-host cluster that a vmotion or  DRS or FT action can take place. Theoretically, you can configure the  vmware cluster to span the entire server farm, end-to-end. But in  reality, how are vmware clusters configured? I would think that the  hosts in a cluster are largely configured in adjacent cabinets, not  across the entire data center. So, do you REALLY need to span the L2  domain across the entire data center server farm?

Hi Ayodeji,
Is this type of deployment support.
Also off the topic question, can I have a top level domain(example.com) and sub-domain(staging.example.com) form a peer relationship in im & presence servers.
As per Cisco 2 sub-domains apart of the same top-level domain can form a peer relationship.
Thanks.

  • Clustering and CF9 Standard?

    Hi,
I have a couple of questions that I was hoping to get answered around ColdFusion 9 and clustering.  Currently, we run CF8 and IIS on the same box with a dedicated db server and serve up about 10 applications.  We are starting to look at clustering and I wanted to know:
    1. With CF 9 Standard, can we setup clustering?  Our apps have session vars and we want to use sticky sessions but I'm unsure if we can do that just with CF9 Standard.
    2. Does CF play well with VMware? If so, does anyone have any success stories around Virtualizing CF?
    Thanks,

    1. No, you can not set up clustering in CF Standard. You could set up multiple servers and let a load balancer handle the distributio of requests over the servers, but then you do not have session failover. This may meet your requirements. Or not.
    2. It works just fine. I can't remember when I set up CF for the last time on a non VMware system.

  • VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop Benchmark Comparison

This is a quickie benchmark of VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop using Super PI, PC Mark 05, and Passmark.
    VMWare Fusion 36932
    Parallels Desktop 3094 Beta 2
    Notes:
Both virtual machines were allocated with large 10+ GB virtual disks and 640MB of RAM. The VMWare CPU was configured with two processors. The Parallels CPU was configured with 1 (two is not available). VMWare reported the CPU as 1 physical, 2 logical processors running at 2.66 GHz while Parallels reported 1 physical, 1 logical processor running at 9.6 GHz (the combined speed of all four cores on the Mac Pro). The max observed CPU utilization in activity monitor when running under VMWare was 200% and max under Parallels was 173%.
I chose not to compare 1 VMWare CPU vs. 1 Parallels CPU. While Parallels does not support SMP or multithreaded processes on multiple processors the CPU utilization on the Mac went well above 1 core (173%). For this comparison, I wanted to see results of max processing based on what the two vendors have delivered, as opposed to benchmarking the underlying "virtual or hypervisor cpu" on a 1:1 basis. This explains why VMWare was 2x faster than Parallels on some CPU tests.
Both of these products are beta. VMWare is running in debug mode (can not be turned off in this beta).
Caveat emptor on these stats. This was an unscientific exercise to satisfy my curiosity. Some of the extraordinary differences are highlighted with <--.
    Platform:

Thanks for posting these numbers - it's an interesting comparison.
I would expect the final VMWare fusion performance numbers to be quite a bit better than that of Parallels - they have almost a decade's worth of experience more than the Parallels folks in this arena, and a much larger development team to boot.
Once VMWare Fusion is released to the public, I think that you'll see a clearer distinction between the two products. VMWare will continue to appeal to the professional customer, with a more robust feature set and corporate-friendly features (and a correspondingly higher price tag); Parallels will fall more into the consumer/VirtualPC-replacement market. It will be interesting to see how Parallels will be affected when (and if) VMWare player is ported to OS X.
Interesting about the Parallels performance stats on a native partition - looks like almost enough reason to avoid the bootcamp partition approach altogether. Sharing a native windows installation with a VM in parallels is a pretty scary situation in any case, as the two environments have entirely different hardware configurations. Do-able, but there is some black magic involved (if you want to see an example of what I mean, try to move a windows installation from one machine to another w/different hardware sometime - it ain't pretty); I wouldn't try this in a production scheme unless I had REALLY good backups.

  • My iMac desktop and McBook Air laptop run on Mavericks, but desktop has VMWare Fusion and runs Windows 7 too.  Can I transfer this capability to my McBook Air?

My iMac desktop and McBook Air laptop run on Mavericks.  The laptop also runs Windows 7 via VM Ware Fusion.  Can I transfer this capability to my McBook Air, so I can run the same plus the Windows programs on my laptop?

Thanks Kappy, but I should add that my desktop runs VMWare Fusion and Windows 7.  My laptop and desktop basic operating systems are Mavericks.  When I travel, I take my laptop with me.  My desktop runs a Windows investment program I like, and I'd like to be able to use this program in my laptop when I'm on the road.  VM Ware said I could do this, but would have to make and then transfer a "file" of the programs in question. How would this be done, since it would involve 3 files:  Fusion, Windows 7 and the investment program?  Maybe Apple should do this at the genius bar?  Appreciate any comments...Thanks again, Patrick

  • Is Distributed Transaction Coordinator services of the application role are required by SQL Server 2012 for clustering and support of SharePoint 2013.

All I want to know is if Distributed Transaction Coordinator services of the application role are required by SQL Server 2012 for clustering and support of SharePoint 2013.
I have been planning and deploying my companies first Windows Server 2012/SQL Server 2012 Always On cluster and Always On Availability Groups Multi-Subnet cluster and instances for SharePoint 2013, and I will be brutally honest, the documentation on either
the MSDN and TechNet leave alot to be desired. Continually finding links in the documentation will take me from a Windows 2012 reference to a page talking about Windows Server 2008 or R2, The differences of which there are so many when it comes to configurations,
settings, roles, services when working with SQL Server 2012. I have been confused, frustrated, screaming mad, with all the misdirection in this documentation.  The documentation takes me windows 2008 R2 which is different than 2012!
Tired and trying to pick myself up off the floor!
    Greg
    Gman

In general, DTC is not required for SQL 2012.  But, since you are asking specifically about SharePoint, it would be better to ask in a SharePoint forum.  They would be more likely to know those situations where FTC might be needed by SharePoint.

  • Array of clusters and in the cluster is a bar meter, how can I change the color individually?

Array of clusters and in the cluster is a bar meter, how can I change the color of the bar meter individually for each element of the array?  I have just figured out that you can't change properties of one element of the array without all elements changing.  For the scaling I had to make numeric indicators for each tick of the scale so that each bar meter in the clustered array would have individual scales.  I also had to do some math to scale each barmeter to display correct proportions from 0 to 100%.  Now I'm stumped on the color of the bar meter.  Basically, if the value goes over a setpoint, the bar meter needs to turn red.  It has to be in an array to be infinitely scalable.
    Thanks
    Matt
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    You can't do that-
    without a little trick.
You could consider laying a custom color box over the bar graph in the cluster you can set the color based on the value of the bar graph or even make a "Pseudo"- bar graph using a series of color boxes stacked to look lie a bar and changing values of the Color boxs from empty to full to red.
Here is an example to demonstrate

  • VMware Player and mouse not behaving correctly with the vmmouse driver

I'm running Arch on VMware Player and having problems with the mouse behavior.
    - Arch is updated, 32 -bit
    - VMware Player 6.0.1
    - Host is Windows 8.1 64-bit
    - XFCE 4.10
If I install xf86-input-vmmouse, the following happens:
    - If cursor touches the edge of the screen when scrolling a window with the scroll bar, scrolling stops. If I continue pressing the mouse button and moving the mouse (and not touching any edges), the scrolling starts working again after two seconds.
    - When opening any new window, hovering and clicking will register only after two seconds. This is very noticeable when opening the application menu and trying to launch any app - first click never works.
Uninstalling the vmmouse driver fixes the above problems. The mouse "feeling" gets very bad though, it seems jumpy and the acceleration is crazy and can't be tweaked to be satisfactory with the mouse settings. With vmmouse the mouse feels otherwise just fine.
Installing or uninstalling Open-VM-Tools doesn't do anything.
I tried this, but it had no effect: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … s_expected
Happens both in fullscreen and windowed, scrolling behavior happens every time, hover/click lag is not so predictable (seems to happen 50 % of the time).
Might there be any easy fix for this?

  • How to implement row span and column span in JTable.

    Hi,
How do we implement Col span and row span in JTable as in Html.
    Kindly help.
    Thank You

Although I suppose you could extend JTable to support column and row spans, this would involve a lot of of work and quite a few hacks. I think you will be better off either creating a new custom JComponent with an appropriate model for this purpose or using an existing solution such as [JIDE Grids|http://www.jidesoft.com/products/grids.htm] which includes a CellSpanTable.

  • 10.4.11, VMware Fusion and Windows XP (Home Edition) works just fine

OK, so I'm through the installation of VMware Fusion and Windows XP (Home Edition) and I have to say that it was pretty much point and click as advertised. All network services seem to be working and I'm running both OS side-by-side with out a hitch.
Haven't put the system through any rigorous test yet, like VPN, network printing or rending large graphic files, but the installation, setup and normal operation went smoothly taking about an hour in total.
Machine: MacBook Pro, 1.8Ghz with 1G of RAM memory and dual monitors.
    Host OS: MacOS 10.4.11

I now have installed XP Pro into a Boot Camp Partition. Basically point and shoot. Then while booted in XP I used PC Mover to migrate my old PC to the Boot Camp partition. With the exception of one program and my virus and firewall programs all went well, almost point and shoot. Then I installed VMWares Fusion and used my Boot Camp partition as the source. If you follow instructions from VMWare things work relatively problem free.
After posting questions on VMwares site about processing video and compiling DVDs in Windows using Fusion I decided that such processor intensive requirements are best handled in the Boot Camp (native) mode.
The biggest problem I have encountered is that Microsoft Office constantly asks to be reactivated when switching between Boot Camp startup and Fusion. No solution I know of, except not to use Office in Boot Camp Mode. Secondly XP Pro required a re-authorization from Microsoft so I could run it in both Boot Camp and Fusion modes. Obtaining the authorization (activation code) from Microsoft was not a problem.

  • Maxdb new features - Page Clustering and Prefetch

    Hi to all,
2 new features of maxdb are available with new patches: Page Clustering and Prefetch in OLTP-Systems.
Are there any experiences to this features?
    READAHEAD_TABLE_THRESHOLD
"This parameter is used to specify, if read operations of tables
should be optimized, i.e. if during a table access more than the
specified value in pages is affected, servertasks will be used to
read ahead pages of this table."
I activated this parameter in November. The system now starts more quickly and some expensive sql-statements may be faster. But the average db-time didn't change.
Page Clustering can be activated with parameter: DATA_IO_BLOCK_COUNT
Then tables can be migrated with SQL-Statement: ALTER TABLE <table name> CLUSTER
I activated this only for one table. This table now is read much faster.
    My questions.
Is there a documentation available for this features?
How can I "uncluster" clustered tables?
When this features are activated, expensive sql-statements are processed much faster. Because of the high workload on storagesystem, all other transaction may get slower?
    regards
    Franz

    > 2 new features of maxdb are available with new patches: Page Clustering and Prefetch in OLTP-Systems.
First of all: both features, although technically available, are not yet generally released for OLTP usage.
The current implementation of page prefetching is explicitely a proof-of-concept implementation which should be used by recommendation from MaxDB support only.
There are several limitations to the functionality at the moment, e.g. it does only work for table scans.
It does not work for joins, for index builds neither does it work on clustered tables.
Prefetching is available to 7.6 release only at the moment, so after an upgrade to 7.7 this feature would be gone...
    > I activated this parameter in November. The system now starts more quickly and some expensive sql-statements may be faster. But the average db-time didn't change.
    Well, nothing surprising here.
On SAP start there happen a lot of tablescans, mostly attributable to the fully buffered tables for the ABAP internals (security, ddic, etc.)
These statements will of course benefit if the pages are now read into the buffer in parallel.
For the avg. db-time: be happy!
This basically means, that most of the statements running in your system aren't processed by table scans, which is for MaxDB nearly always a very good thing.
    > Page Clustering can be activated with parameter: DATA_IO_BLOCK_COUNT
    > Then tables can be migrated with SQL-Statement: ALTER TABLE <table name> CLUSTER
Ok, page clustering is not documented yet (just as prefetching is not officially documented) and not released for OLTP.
    > I activated this only for one table. This table now is read much faster.
    >
    > My questions.
    > Is there a documentation available for this features?
Hmm.. you're using undocumented features - what do you expect?`
No, currently there is no official documentation.
There is work going on to provide official documentation but none of it is released yet (and it will take some more time!)
    > How can I "uncluster" clustered tables?
    ALTER TABLE <tablename> NOT CLUSTER
    > When this features are activated, expensive sql-statements are processed much faster. Because of the high workload on storagesystem, all other transaction may get slower?
    It's not that simple.
Both features address specific issues and are used only in very specific circumstances.
The clustering feature will not improve performance if the table is not accessed via the cluster key.
In fact, it may even decrease performance if this is done.
Also, at the moment clustered tables don't stay clustered on updates/inserts/deletes.
Therefore it is not necessarily a good idea to cluster tables like REPOLOAD pr REPOSRC on a development system.

    Lars

  • Clustering and partioning

    Hi,
Can anyone please say What is the difference between clustering and partioning?.
What is mean by Hash Partioning ? I know it is done by hash value. How we will get the hash value?
Bit confusing to do self- study. It would be great if someone explains to me.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Clusters are two or more tables that are physically stored together to take advantage of similar columns between the tables. If two tables have an identical column and you frequently need to join the two tables, for example, it is advantageous to store the common column values in the same data
block. The goal is to reduce disk I/O and thereby increase access speed when you join related tables.
However, clusters will reduce the performance of your INSERT statements, because more blocks are needed to store the data of multiple tables.
Oracle partitions addresses the key problem of supporting very large tables and indexes by allowing you to decompose them into smaller and more manageable pieces called partitions.
Once partitions are defined, SQL statements can access and manipulate the partitions rather than entire tables or indexes.
Partitions are especially useful in data warehouse applications, which commonly store and analyze large amounts of historical data
Hash partitioning is a partitioning technique where a hash key is used to distribute rows evenly across the different partitions (sub-tables). This is typically used where ranges aren't appropriate, i.e. employee number, productID, etc.

  • Clustering and Partitioning

    Hello SDN Friends,
Can both clustering and partioning possible together.

Clustering is only supported by the database platform DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows.
You can use partitioning to improve the performance of other databases.
