Vmware Fusion 3.0 and keyboard Hotkeys

Hi all, ive recently installed Vmware fusion 3.0 and sadly running windows xp, as I have to use windows only programmes such as 3dsmax and autocad,
I was wondering if anyone has the answer to this problem, Im currently using the 3d design programme Rhino 4 on my macbook pro and many of rhinos commands use the F-keys however they cant be used as the react to the macs keyboard commands such as F5 and the keyboard backlights,
any suggestions would be great,

Hi yaddle2go;
I am unable to tell you for sure because I refuse to run anything from Microsoft on my Mac.
I have been told that since BootCamp run Windows directly rather then emulation like Fusion that the function keys are suppose to work properly.
Maybe if you repost your question over in the BootCamp forum you might be able to find someone that runs Microsoft software on their Mac that can give you a better answer.

  • Vmware Fusion 3.0 and OSX 10.7.4

Vmware Fusion 3.0 was working fine until I upgraded to 10.7.4. After that it has stopped working and gives two or three errors about kernel space, etc and refuses to start.
A Windows 7 virtual machine was in a suspended state when I upgraded the OS. Was this a mistake and should I have completely quit Windows before updating? If so what is the way out now? Will it start working again if I delete the virtual machine and install Windows again?
    Thanks in advance

Thanks for your quick response, PAHU. However, I tried out your suggestion and, first of all, it wouldn't let me import the Virtual Machine which I had copied out to an external drive. The name of the file was just grayed out and it wouldn't let me click on it. Then I tried to create another Win 7 virtual machine and it came up with the same error messages as before. These messages, in sequence, are as follows:
"Unable to retrieve kernel zone sizes"
    "Failed to initialize monitor device"
"Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to"
The same messages appeared when I tried to create a Win XP Professional virtual machine.
As I said in my previous message, this has only started happening after I upgraded Mac OSX to 10.7.4. It was working fine up to 10.7.3.

  • VMWare Fusion, Boot Camp, and Orb

I'm trying to use Orb to stream audio files (podcasts downloaded daily within iTunes to be exact) to a Blackberry. Orb is currently only Win compatible (meaning the streaming can only be done from a Win computer), so I've got VMWare Fusion loaded on the Mac running Windows XP via a Boot Camp partition (I think I've described this properly). In order to enable the XP side to access the podcast files, I've set up shared folders within VMWare Fusion, and then targeted those shared folders within Orb to be streamed.
The problem is that Orb is supposed to regularly rescan those folders looking for changes to the content (as in new podcasts), but this doesn't seem to be happening. And I'm wondering if anyone has idea as to why. Could it possibly be because I am doing Windows via a Boot Camp partition? I see within Fusion that I can't use mirrored folders in this setup (Windows in a Boot Camp partition...at least I think this is the case). Would that make a difference (mirrored folders vs. the basic shared folders approach)?
I know this is sort of in the weeds in a non-Mac product (Orb), but it will make my wife really happy on her two hours of daily commuting if she can access those podcasts without having to remember to attach the iPod to the computer every night, which this setup (if it works properly) should enable her to do. The Blackberry is always with her.
    Thanks very much.

Yes, you need to make some changes, for some reason VMware still claims non or limited support for 64-bit but you can edit a file and work around the problem. When creating a fresh new Fusion environment for Vista.

  • Experiences with Oracle 10g/11g RAC on VMWare Fusion for Macbook and OEL 5

    Folks,
I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro laptop computer to use for demos and testing with Oracle RAC. I am using VMWare Fusion for Mac OS X to setup new VM machines with Oracle 11g.
Thus far, I can setup single instance Oracle 11g database fine with OEL 5 (32 bit OS) as the guest OS. The problem that I keep running into due to the limitation with VMWare Fusion product is that I am not able to edit the VMWare network settings to allow multiple VM machines to communicate with each other. The second main issue that I currently face is that VMWare Fusion does not allow you to setup shared disks which are a requirement to install and configure an Oracle RAC environment. I came to the realization that after searching forums online that
one must setup a third VM machine to act as an NFS or iSCSI filer system to present to the other VM hosts for the shared storage requirement for RAC. Has anyone been able to do all
of this successfully with VMWare Fusion on a Macbook ? If so, I would definitely be interested in finding out how you did this. Specifically the following:
    1. Network configuration for each VMWare Fusion guest OS machine
    2. Shared storage ie) NFS or OpenFiler VM machine
    Regards,
    Ben

    Hi,
I'm facing the same issue.. If your issue is fixed..could you please let me know?
I'm trying to configure 11g RAC with OPenfiler and got stuck here.

  • VMWare Fusion, Linksys CIT200 and a stubborn OSX

    Hello,
I'm a switcher, with a lot of Windows dependencies (one less now that Picasa launched on OSX!) but to get rid of the two machine hassle I got VMWare Fusion and just moved the whole Windows PC into a virtual machine using the VMWare Converter. All fine, however I am very dependent on my Linksys CIT200 Skype Phone.
When connected it lights up, however it is not recognized by OS X, ie it will not turn up in the profiler. If it would, I could use it in VMWare. People with Linux have managed to get this phone working in virtual machines. Why on earth will OS X not see this device and what can I do so it would, so I can pass this USB device on to VMWare?
    All help appreciated!

  • VMWare Fusion, Windows 7, and Display Resolution

When I am running Windows 7 in VMWare Fusion I cannot chose any of my Apple hardware. I do not see the 27" Cinema Display or the trackpad.
I installed the latest drivers fo Book Campt, but I cannot open the BC control panel in Windows. I get an error:
"An error occured when tring to access the Startup disk settings"
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ExpressCard isn't supported in the BIOS as bootable, no.
Can you even boot Mac OS X off ExpressCard?
You could pull the internal SSD and upgrade to another model.

  • Time Capsule Installation on VMware Fusion Windows xp and Mac 10.5.2 sides

I've got the Time Capsule w/ time machine working on the Mac side of my laptop, and yet am avoiding a second attempt to load / install the same on my XP side due to the first time I tried, it didn't work and I had to go back and re-install it on the Mac side.
I'm assuming that the currently working 'Time Machine' is only able to see and back-up, via the Time Capsule, the Mac side of the hard drive? Although, if it sees the whole drive, both XP and OSX sides, then all is good, and my windows based data is being backed-up.
Maybe the Time Capsule can only work with windows as an external drive,
and yet hoping it can also work as a semi automatic back-up disk.
Appreciate any insight, advise and/or references to material that would help.
    Thanks

I asked this very question on another forum, as I had received differing answers previously. Here is the link to my question and to the answers I received, which seem pretty dispositive. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=5305380#post5305380
As you will see, the short answer is that the Win side is not being backed up, but how you should configure your TM backups of your Mac side depend on whether or not you first partitioned with Boot Camp and then installed VM Fusion, or whether you installed Fusion without Boot Camp. (I now use Windows Live OneCare to back up the Win side to the TC, although configuring it to work with TC was a nightmare I care not to have ever to repeat.)

  • VMWare fusion turning off automatic virtual machine start

    Hello,
Possibly not the best forum for this question, but I hope some of you use VMWare fusion to run Windows on your MAC.
I originally used VMWare fusion eacy windows install to install XP Home as my virtual machine with automatic start up of XP home when VMWare fusion starts. I have subsequently created a new virtual machine for Windows 7 release candidate and want to automatically start this rather than XP when VMWare fusion starts. However I cannot fathom out how to stop VMWare fusion automatically loading and starting XP.
Any ideas? I should probably post this to a VMWare fusion forum, but cannot work out how to do that! I can see the appropriate VMWare forums but cannot see any way to post new threads. I do have a VMWare account.
    Many thanks for your help.

    Hello Paul,
While Bjorn appears to have answered your question (and if so, you should mark the question "answered" BTW — and Bjorn will get credit for answering!), I'm sure you could use the kind of specialist help available from the Mac-Access mailing list discussion group. There are a number of VMWare Fusion users who also use VoiceOver on that list.

  • Using VMWare Fusion for playing games

Hi all and I hope you can help.
I have a recent 17" MBP with 2GB of RAM and a Core 2 Duo and I am trying to get some decent game software running on it. To do this I have installed VMWare Fusion, XP Pro and Crysis.
My problem is, I can get the game to run but it is VERY choppy and unplayable.
I have tried various virtual settings, including using 1 and 2 processors, 512mb to 1.5gb RAM but never getting it to run properly.
I am not trying to run it full screen or anywhere near high settings and have allowed the game to scan the hardware to find it's optimal settings and still no luck.
I know Crysis is quite a heavy load but with the hardware in an MBP it should be able to run it without many problems.
Am I being too optimistic trying to run Crysis or are there a set of parameters that are optimised for doing this?

VMWare will also allow you to virtualize a boot camp partition.
The problem with virtualization and gaming is that, while you get direct CPU access and protected memory access, you do not get video access - so there is absolutely no video acceleration, it's all emulated or translated by the virtualizer.
You'll see a very minor CPU hit on anything that just using processor power or takes a lot of data (so long as you have enough physical RAM, and have enough RAM allocated to the virtual machine, to prevent disk swapping), but anything that needs video acceleration will suffer tremendously if it's virtualized.
In general, anything more than Solitare or Minesweeper, and you will want to use Bootcamp if there is no Mac OS X native version of the game (hooray for Blizzard, and all you other mac-native developers). I know the latest versions of VMWare and Parrallels all say they have new DirectX support, and Crossover has a version out just for gaming, but you'll disappoint yourself if you think these will do much more than just show the splash screen and a slide show for most games.
The good news is more game companies are starting to take Mac OS X seriously, and technologies such as Cider are helping developers port their code easier. But it's a long road, and the Macintosh has notoriously been spotty for gaming.

  • Fix for BT headset nightmare in VMWare Fusion? (Macbook Leopard)

Appreciate any help after struggling for over a day trying to connect a top Bluetooth headset (Jawbone)...
    Thanks,

    CASE:
    2 GB Ram Macbook
    Leopard OS
Fusion 1.0 running WinXP Service Pack 2
    Jawbone Bluetooth Headset
Bluetooth headset works for sound input/output when paired and turned on -- in Leopard OS (only)
Bluetooth Enabler installer for Windows successfully installed (as prompted by VMWare) from the Leopard CD drivers folder
VMWare's Sound, USB Bluetooth menu items in Fusion confirm association with Leopard
VMWare window Bluetooth icon (at bottom) shows Bluetooth link to Leopard remains OK
    PROBLEM
Bluetooth control panel (in Mac OS) disappears for the entire time that WinXP is launched in Fusion
In WinXP, sound input/output to Jawbone headset does not work, even though the sharing icon for Bluetooth at bottom of VMWare Fusion window remains active (showing blue rather than black)
On exiting WinXP, the missing Bluetooth control panel in Leopard system preference reappears -- but a working link in Leopard with Jawbone headset can only be restored after a Macbook retstart

    NEXT STEPS
Please suggest any troubleshooting ideas ... Applecare tech support reps' concluded (after 3+ hours on two calls) that this may be a a VMWare Fusion 1.0 bug

This is no Mac, Leopard or Headset issue - I experience the same on a MacMini DualCore, OS 10.4.11, VMWare Fusion 1.0 and Win2K.

    Hi guys,

and if through one of the virtual machine softwares, which is BETTER?? the Parallel for Desktop or the VMware fusion one???

I use both boot camp and vmware fusion. A neat feature of vmware fusion is you can access your boot camp partition as a virtual machine from vmware. This way, you can have both. I believe parallels might also let you do that but I have never used it. This has been helpful to me if I need to access a file from the boot camp partition quickly and easily without rebooting my computer.
I agree with dwb that xp is probably going to be the best os to run through a virtualization software.
I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either parallels or vmware fusion. There is also a FREE software package created by sun called VirtualBox.
Here is the link to there home page: http://www.virtualbox.org/
I hear and read that it is excellent as well.
    Hope this helps.
I just installed parallels and you can use your bootcamp partition for the vm with parallels as well. Its pretty slick. Use it for light applications with parallel, reboot to bootcamp for graphics intensive ones.
    Cheers.

  • Keyboard - VMWare Fusion

I have an aluminum keyboard, and am using VMWare Fusion so that I can run MS Money. The snag I have is that the number pad doesn't work when using Money - only the numbers along the top of the qwerty keys do.
    Anyone know a fix?
    Cheers, Dave

Interesting, I too am running Fusion, but have not yet had the need to use the 10-key. Now that I checked it, I too cannot use the key pad. I'll do some further testing to see if I can figure it out. Thanx for posting this.

  • VMWare Fusion and slow system: solution

Having seen few answers to this problem on the Forum and many posts with the same issue, and finally figuring it out myself, I post a solution to the sluggish behaviour of SnowLeopard when VMWare Fusion 3 is running, and the beachball keeps appearing whenever you do anything else outside Fusion.
I had allocated a lot of memory to the virtual machine during installation (with 4 Gb on board I thought let's make it fast) but this turns out to be a bad idea.
    • do a restart fo your Mac and wait untill all startup processes have finished (VMWare should NOT be one of the startup processes in this test)
    • turn on the activity monitor and open the tab System Memory.
    • now fire up your virtual machine and check how much memory is set to INactive. In my case this was a lot, reducing free memory to almost zero
So for any other activity that is going on behind the scenes (emails, dropbox syncs, TimeMachine etc etc), memory swaps are necessary which take time (and may lead to crashes sometimes).
    To solve this issue
    • shot down virtual machine (not VMWare Fusion
    • select Virtual Machine > Settings > Processors & RAM and trigger the help file to get instructions depending on your requirements.
e.g. virtual Windows XP, running only Office or a browser, requires no more then 1 processor, 512 Mb RAM.
    • now start your virtual machine again and check the Memory usage in the Activity Monitor. Your system should be a lot snappier now.

There's a free electronic book (because of sponsorship by VMware): Take Control of VMware Fusion 3" (http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/vmware-fusion-3) that has advice on RAM allocation with VMware Fusion 3 and many other topics. You might find it useful.

  • VMware Fusion suddenly hogging resources and fan running constantly

I have had my MacBook for about a year now and until 2 weeks ago had no problems with this issue before. Now suddenly, if I launch VMware Fusion (even not running any programs) the MacBook fan comes on and stays on. When I launch the Mac "Activity Monitor' App, sure enough VMware is hogging all the resources. I have added nothing to the XP side of things during this time. Any ideas on what might be happening as the constant fan 'on' issue is a pain and it FEELS like it's a drag on regular Mac performance. Thanks.

Is it possible that your Anti-Virus software (Not sure if you installed one) is performing a scheduled virus scan at bootup? Until that is finished, it will continue to attempt to start/finish the scan at boot up.
    Just a thought.

  • VMWare Fusion and Windows (any version)

Hey everyone, first of all I'm new to Macs so please don't flame me.
I recently bought VMWare Fusion 2.0 for my Macbook so that I can run my Windows XP Home Edition virtually from my BootCamp Partition without having to reboot in order to switch back and forth between the 2 operating systems.
However, I noticed that I cannot open files from Windows XP with Mac exclusive applications such as Garageband, iMovie, or even Preview without having to copy it to my Mac Partition and opening it from there. Is this feature available on VMWare Fusion? I know that for Parallels Desktop 4.0, which my brother uses, you can right-click on a file on the virtual Windows operating system, go to "Open with," and then there will be options to open the file for Mac exclusive applications in the list of recommended programs.
Thanks a lot for any help, feedback, or suggestions you guys can provide!
