VMware Fusion is activated even if I do not want it

Hello,
I started using my first Apple a couple of weeks ago and have installed VMware Fusion to be able and use the occasional Windows Application. It is very impressive, especially in the Unity Mode. What have I been doing all this time with my Windows based computers?
One thing is puzzling me however. The Fusion / Windows XP environment is sometimes activated when I don't want it. For instance when clicking a hyperlink from the dashboard the hyperlink starts Internet Explorer in the VMware XP environment instead of simply starting Safari. How can I prevent this from happening. I want to start XP manually and only when there is no alternative available.
Any input is much appreciated.
Thanks, Hans.

Open Safari in OSx and:
1. Click Safari from the top menu and choose Preferences
2. Click on General (Left Most Icon)
3. Next to *Default Web Browser* choose Safari.app (Ensure that nothing with the indication of bootcamp is chosen here).
You should now have Safari as default in OSx instead of a Browser in Boot Camp.

  • Is anyone using VMware fusion and having trouble with USB devices not being recognised

I have an Terratec Axon AX50 Guitar to Midi interface. The editor software is not Lion compatible so I have attempted to run that bit in Windows 7 on a virtual machine.
The problem is that the VM machine will not recognise the USB device, even though when it asks which machine I want to connect to it names the device correctly.
    Any Ideas ?

I think my explanation is enough, the link or email opens when my cursor hovers on it I want to click any link or email I want to see not have them open automatically!!!

thx for your response. are saying websites such as hotmail and yahoo mail detect that they are being accessed via firefox and turn off the JavaScript that makes hot links? really? additionally, i have friends with firefox in which hyperlinks stay active when they are copied and pasted.
was the "Make Link" add-on you posted supposed to fix the problem? i downloaded it, but i don't know where the "context menu" is that is supposed to help me. how to i view this context window now that i have downloaded the add-on?

Why Skype is pushing to force updates are forced to, even though I denied receiving automatic updates taking? Apparently, I have to throw the whole Skype landfill without doing anything.

Are you sure about the more than one account? I'm running Windows XP Professional SP3. There is only ONE user account which I am using and I already checked "never check for updates". It just updated my Firefox automatically. I had to uninstall and download and re-install the older version again.
Is there a fix by editing the Registry to actually disable the automatic updates?

  • VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop Benchmark Comparison

This is a quickie benchmark of VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop using Super PI, PC Mark 05, and Passmark.
    VMWare Fusion 36932
    Parallels Desktop 3094 Beta 2
    Notes:
Both virtual machines were allocated with large 10+ GB virtual disks and 640MB of RAM. The VMWare CPU was configured with two processors. The Parallels CPU was configured with 1 (two is not available). VMWare reported the CPU as 1 physical, 2 logical processors running at 2.66 GHz while Parallels reported 1 physical, 1 logical processor running at 9.6 GHz (the combined speed of all four cores on the Mac Pro). The max observed CPU utilization in activity monitor when running under VMWare was 200% and max under Parallels was 173%.
I chose not to compare 1 VMWare CPU vs. 1 Parallels CPU. While Parallels does not support SMP or multithreaded processes on multiple processors the CPU utilization on the Mac went well above 1 core (173%). For this comparison, I wanted to see results of max processing based on what the two vendors have delivered, as opposed to benchmarking the underlying "virtual or hypervisor cpu" on a 1:1 basis. This explains why VMWare was 2x faster than Parallels on some CPU tests.
Both of these products are beta. VMWare is running in debug mode (can not be turned off in this beta).
Caveat emptor on these stats. This was an unscientific exercise to satisfy my curiosity. Some of the extraordinary differences are highlighted with <--.

Thanks for posting these numbers - it's an interesting comparison.
I would expect the final VMWare fusion performance numbers to be quite a bit better than that of Parallels - they have almost a decade's worth of experience more than the Parallels folks in this arena, and a much larger development team to boot.
Once VMWare Fusion is released to the public, I think that you'll see a clearer distinction between the two products. VMWare will continue to appeal to the professional customer, with a more robust feature set and corporate-friendly features (and a correspondingly higher price tag); Parallels will fall more into the consumer/VirtualPC-replacement market. It will be interesting to see how Parallels will be affected when (and if) VMWare player is ported to OS X.
Interesting about the Parallels performance stats on a native partition - looks like almost enough reason to avoid the bootcamp partition approach altogether. Sharing a native windows installation with a VM in parallels is a pretty scary situation in any case, as the two environments have entirely different hardware configurations. Do-able, but there is some black magic involved (if you want to see an example of what I mean, try to move a windows installation from one machine to another w/different hardware sometime - it ain't pretty); I wouldn't try this in a production scheme unless I had REALLY good backups.

  • Vmware fusion to hyper-v on Windows 8

I am trying to figure out if I can convert my VMWare Fusion images to Hyper-V images. I want to move from my Mac OS X running VMWare Fusion to Windows 8 running Hyper-V, I want to take my VMs with me. Is there a tool or method to do that. The only references
I have found are out of date.
    Thanks
    Matt

I assume you are doing this on a Mac.
keep in mind you will lose some functionality going to Hyper-V.
Hyper-V was designed for server virtualization and is missing features you may take for granted:
Sound support, 3d graphics, usb redirection, etc.
Yes, there is a "work around" (more like a hack in my opinion) that allows some of this functionality if you connect to the Hyper-V VM through RDP as opposed to the console directly. But that solution has it's own problems: You must enable RDP
on the VM and ensure network connectivity between host and guest (depending on the reason for the VM this is not always desirable or even acceptable).
Furthermore, if this is a MacBook Retina (with no Ethernet port), keep in mind you will need to share your wireless connection between host and guest. Bridging wireless connections does not work reliably under Hyper-V, resulting in network connectivity for
both the host and guest dropping periodically. Again, there is a work around for this by creating an 'internal' hyper-v network between the host and guest and then enabling windows internet sharing on your wifi adapter. This has some strong limitations, i.e.
the guest will be NAT-ted and the host will act as dhcp server and dns relay for the VM and is for all practical purposes, not configurable.

I use VMware Fusion to use Quicken in Windows.  Just want to be sure before doing the upgrade to Lion that it will still work?  Thanks in advance.

You have to check with VMFusion, but my advice is to wait a few more months so the bugs are completely worked out if your very dependent upon things working.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
since VMWare Fusion is not an Apple product it would be best to use their own support here http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/support.html
To my knowledge Fusion supports ActiveX.

  • VMware Fusion suddenly hogging resources and fan running constantly

I have had my MacBook for about a year now and until 2 weeks ago had no problems with this issue before. Now suddenly, if I launch VMware Fusion (even not running any programs) the MacBook fan comes on and stays on. When I launch the Mac "Activity Monitor' App, sure enough VMware is hogging all the resources. I have added nothing to the XP side of things during this time. Any ideas on what might be happening as the constant fan 'on' issue is a pain and it FEELS like it's a drag on regular Mac performance. Thanks.

Is it possible that your Anti-Virus software (Not sure if you installed one) is performing a scheduled virus scan at bootup? Until that is finished, it will continue to attempt to start/finish the scan at boot up.
    Just a thought.

  • Fix for BT headset nightmare in VMWare Fusion? (Macbook Leopard)

Appreciate any help after struggling for over a day trying to connect a top Bluetooth headset (Jawbone)...
    Thanks,
    Mark
    Openworld.com
    CASE:
    2 GB Ram Macbook
    Leopard OS
Fusion 1.0 running WinXP Service Pack 2
    Jawbone Bluetooth Headset
Bluetooth headset works for sound input/output when paired and turned on -- in Leopard OS (only)
Bluetooth Enabler installer for Windows successfully installed (as prompted by VMWare) from the Leopard CD drivers folder
VMWare's Sound, USB Bluetooth menu items in Fusion confirm association with Leopard
VMWare window Bluetooth icon (at bottom) shows Bluetooth link to Leopard remains OK
    PROBLEM
Bluetooth control panel (in Mac OS) disappears for the entire time that WinXP is launched in Fusion
In WinXP, sound input/output to Jawbone headset does not work, even though the sharing icon for Bluetooth at bottom of VMWare Fusion window remains active (showing blue rather than black)
On exiting WinXP, the missing Bluetooth control panel in Leopard system preference reappears -- but a working link in Leopard with Jawbone headset can only be restored after a Macbook retstart
FIXES TRIED WITH APPLECARE (all unsuccessful)
Removing Library preferences (main and user-specific) for bluetooth and restarting
    Zapping the PRAM
Creating a new user with Admin privileges, and creating a new linke
    Removing the battery
    NEXT STEPS
Please suggest any troubleshooting ideas ... Applecare tech support reps' concluded (after 3+ hours on two calls) that this may be a a VMWare Fusion 1.0 bug

This is no Mac, Leopard or Headset issue - I experience the same on a MacMini DualCore, OS 10.4.11, VMWare Fusion 1.0 and Win2K.

  • Windows XP OEM - Bootcamp and VMWare Fusion?

    Hi everyone,
I need to run Windows on my MBP and just purchased an OEM version of Windows XP with SP2 from ebay (I didn't even know what OEM was at the time - my fault for not doing some more research). I had wanted to install this in Boot Camp and then run my Boot Camp partition through VMWare Fusion when I needed to run both OS's at the same time - will I be able to do this? Or will I be able to only install it in either Boot Camp or VMWare Fusion (if either)?
If I can only install it in one, which would you recommend? I currently own a copy of MS Office for Windows and was going to run that because I need Excel desperately for the business program I am in and need it to run fast (I've heard MS Office '04 for Mac is sluggish for running intense tasks in Excel because of Rosetta on the Intel Macs).
Thanks in advance for any advice!

If you don't activate Windows natively, you can use and run it with VMware without having to change activation.
Rosetta is slow on startup and needs more memory. If you only have 1GB, might want more. Whether to run VMware or Office, 2GB is more comfortable. Your MacBook Pro should be able to run Office Mac or OpenOffice/NeoOffice.
See if VMware works without partitioning your drive which can be messy (read threads on "partitioning first also").
Using OEM copy is fine and can save quite a bit, as long as it is SP2 and - of course - works - though I would never buy it on ebay given you can get it from Newegg, Amazon etc. I am a paranoid skeptic of what and where software I install came from today.
Numbers doesn't seem to be a full replacement for Excel, but have you looked at NeoOffice?

  • VMWare Fusion and slow system: solution

Having seen few answers to this problem on the Forum and many posts with the same issue, and finally figuring it out myself, I post a solution to the sluggish behaviour of SnowLeopard when VMWare Fusion 3 is running, and the beachball keeps appearing whenever you do anything else outside Fusion.
I had allocated a lot of memory to the virtual machine during installation (with 4 Gb on board I thought let's make it fast) but this turns out to be a bad idea.
    • do a restart fo your Mac and wait untill all startup processes have finished (VMWare should NOT be one of the startup processes in this test)
    • turn on the activity monitor and open the tab System Memory.
    • now fire up your virtual machine and check how much memory is set to INactive. In my case this was a lot, reducing free memory to almost zero
So for any other activity that is going on behind the scenes (emails, dropbox syncs, TimeMachine etc etc), memory swaps are necessary which take time (and may lead to crashes sometimes).
    To solve this issue
    • shot down virtual machine (not VMWare Fusion
    • select Virtual Machine > Settings > Processors & RAM and trigger the help file to get instructions depending on your requirements.
e.g. virtual Windows XP, running only Office or a browser, requires no more then 1 processor, 512 Mb RAM.
    • now start your virtual machine again and check the Memory usage in the Activity Monitor. Your system should be a lot snappier now.

There's a free electronic book (because of sponsorship by VMware): Take Control of VMware Fusion 3" (http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/vmware-fusion-3) that has advice on RAM allocation with VMware Fusion 3 and many other topics. You might find it useful.

  • VMWare Fusion and Windows (any version)

Hey everyone, first of all I'm new to Macs so please don't flame me.
I recently bought VMWare Fusion 2.0 for my Macbook so that I can run my Windows XP Home Edition virtually from my BootCamp Partition without having to reboot in order to switch back and forth between the 2 operating systems.
However, I noticed that I cannot open files from Windows XP with Mac exclusive applications such as Garageband, iMovie, or even Preview without having to copy it to my Mac Partition and opening it from there. Is this feature available on VMWare Fusion? I know that for Parallels Desktop 4.0, which my brother uses, you can right-click on a file on the virtual Windows operating system, go to "Open with," and then there will be options to open the file for Mac exclusive applications in the list of recommended programs.
Thanks a lot for any help, feedback, or suggestions you guys can provide!

  • VMWare Fusion - Beach Ball City

I am an experienced VMWare user and am having the hardest time with Windows 7 running in VMWare fusion. My physical device runs more than fine, has more than enough memory and should by rights, run a Windows 7 VM with ease. I am seeing nothing but beach ball and having extremely slow responses no matter what I do. I initially migrated a Windows 7 VM that was hosted on a Win7 Dell Laptop under VMWare Workstation 7. Under that platform, the VM ran very well, almost to the point that I had confusion as to which instance was the VM. After migration, I did a remove/reinstall of VMWare tools, tried using more/less memory (originally configured with 2g of memory) Did everything I could to optimize performance. The Virtual Drive was only 40g. I even tried building a Win7 VM from scratch on VMware fusion, but still get the same results.
I know plenty about VMWare on Windows, but not Mac. I have been a Mac user for a very long time and am a career System Designer for a very large Aerospace company in the US. I have seen it all and typically can figure things out, but this one is just annoying me to no end. I want to have them both on one device and have each perform like they should with today's hardware. I know I can do the Hackintosh thing, but that isn't legit and while a Win7 image can be loaded on just about anything, the Mac OS X disk isn't that forgiving.
I just want to know some pointers, because I have run a Win7 x64 VM on my Dell, that has a single Dual-core proc and 4g of memory without performance problems but try to run the same VM on my Macbook (more proc and twice the RAM) and it just hangs. Something has to be set wrong somewhere and I just don't know VMware Fusion well enough to tell.

Are you using v. 3? maybe try Parallels 6 and see the difference?
What are you running in Windows?
Did you install Windows on its own partition running native, and then enable and activate in Fusion? how does it run natively on MBP? and what are the specs of MBP?
Oh, and as to beach ball issue, run disk repair from another hard drive or your OS X DVD; or invest in 3rd party. It actually could be an issue with HFS file system and directory, so rule that out.
If it happens only with or in VM, well I assume your clean install of Windows, and you would CHKDSK if that was an issue.
