VMware Fusion - Journaled External HDD using MacDrive or NTFS?

I plan to use VMware Fusion running XP Pro via a Bootcamp partition. Along with this I would like a dedicated external HDD for my windows work files (Premiere Pro etc). The trouble is, I'm not sure what way to go with the formatting of the external HDD.
Would I be better to run MacDrive on the Windows system and work off a Journaled format, or NTFS (with something like Paragon on the OS X side)?
I don't want to use FAT32 as I will be working with large video files (<4GB) on the windows side.
Has anyone had any experience with this?

I'm not really answering your question (sorry), but you can create a virtual hard drive from within VMware's interface. The file for the virtual hard drive can reside anywhere, including your external drive. It will start out small and grow up to the max size you specify when you create it. On the Windows side, it looks like a regular hard drive. In my case, my second drive mounts as the "E:" drive.
I find this useful, because the virtual drive does not take up my whole external drive. And the external drive can be formatted for Mac (HFS+) while Windows XP thinks the second drive is formatted for NTFS. In my case, the file for the virtual drive resides on an external drive that I uses for other Mac things.
Now, if you want to share data from both the Mac and Windows sides, instead of using a virtual hard drive (or a real hard drive), you can use WMware's Shared Folders feature to map a share point on the Mac side as a network drive on the Windows side. In my case, I have a folder in my Mac OS X user Documents folder mapped to drive Z: in Windows. Since it's not really going over a network, it is fast.
So if I use this drive in Windows, the files are immediately available in Mac OS X. If you access that folder in Mac OS X, the changes are immediately available in Windows. I can probably go the other way and connect from the Mac side to a share point on the Windows side, but I haven't figured that out yet.

Kaushal.(1) To be blunt you dont have enough RAM for starters. You might get aware with 2GB, you probably really need 3GB or perhaps 2.5GB might just do.
    (2) VMware is a company who produce several products, i assume you are talking about VMware server ... but I may be wrong.
    (3) I assume you are retaining a windows OS on your laptop., but again i could be wrong.
Its not really in my nature to have Oracle Databases on external USB drives, but this stack will probably just work. (Simply because VMmare server will use a simply file for its virtual disk(s) on the USB)
I would also not be surprised if you has issues with the Solaris graphics.
In general I suspect your auggested setup may be at the least troublesome.
What I have said above are opinions, it is not fully researched and I accept corrections.

  • VMWare Fusion on MacBook Pro using Leopard OS

After installing VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro with Leapord, it does
not want to mount my external USB hard drives. Fusion sees the drive
and shows me that it is connected with the option to disconnect the
drive, but it doesn't show up on "My Computer". I have seen it show
up briefly, sometimes just after I reinstall Fusion tools, but then it
disappears usually within a couple of minutes. The USB drive is
formatted Mac OS extended and I have MacDrive 7 on Fusion to recognize
    Mac formatted drives.

"If you boot natively, you need MacDrive. But Fusion has trouble with accessing other drives connected (I have four)."
Yes, it seems very inconsistent, mounting one time then not the other. I just created a shared folder to my external USB drive in Fusion and access it that way. It's better since it doesn't
constantly mount and dismount from the Mac OS and give those "your drive was not ejected properly" messages. I've given up with trying to get fusion to mount my external USB drives. Parallels does it much better but I find Parallels so slow compared to Fusion that I
don't even bother with Par anymore.
"Did you install a BootCamp partition and then let Fusion take over? and do you have Fusion 1.1?"
Yes, I am using Fusion 1.1. I never did the BootCamp thing because I really need to work back and forth with my Mac and PC documents - can't' afford to reboot each time.
Have you done the BootCamp partition and Fusion take over? I am not really familiar with Boot Camp. Is it worth it? Can you swap files across OS's with Fusion and BootCamp?
    Thanks for the quick reply.

  • How do I back up an external HDD AND my macbook to another external HDD using Time Machine?

    Hi,
My little old Macbook is pretty slow and clunky at the moment and I have decided to transfer my iphoto library to an external HDD named 'photos'.
I've check, it's all there - present and correct.
I've removed 'iphoto' from my 'pictures' folder on my macbook to trash.
I've tried to back both macbook and photos HDD to time machine but I'm unable to recover the photos HDD.
I have opened TM preferences, selected options and excluded the 'photos' HDD from backups as I was under the impression that the drive shown in the window is the drive used by TM.
Can somebody help me please. I've tried to recover a photo, just to test the backup but unable to find anything.
    Kind regards
    T

If I understand you correctly you want to back up two drives simultaneously. If that is correct, you will find a guide here: http://pondini.org/TM/32.html

  • How to read and write to the same external HDD using Mac and PC

    Hello,
I am using a mid 2014 MacBook Pro.
I read somewhere that to write to an external HDD from a Mac, you need to format it in a particular way.
But this would stop it from being used on my PC. Is there any way I can write to the same HDD from both OSes ?
    Thanks !

Yes.  Format the HDD to FAT or ExFAT.  It seems best to do that on a PC.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook + external HDD / Using two libraries??

Hi there, question for all laptop users.
How do I have my main (complete) music library on an external HDD and a partial music library on my MacBook?
When I'm onthe go I wish to have some music but my MacBook HDD isnt big enough for my entire music library.
How can I have such a system where I can be onth move with part of my library and leave the rest on my external HDD and how would I change the music on my MacBook depending on what I want to have with me ???

Hello, I am still struggling to find out how,
I can use both libraries simultaniously (if possible). For example when my laptop is on my desk conntected to my HDD.
Yes and no. You can't use both libraries at once, but I'm pretty sure you can create a library that can play music from both locations at once. Maintaining this library will be the trick.
    This is how I would do it;
    +On your laptop:+
    Option/create a new library.
Preferences>advanced> deselect "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library."
iTunes file menu>add to library> navigate to original laptop music folder and select it.
+This will create a library that can play the music already on the laptop, without duplicating the music files+.
Then, with the hard drive connected:
iTunes file menu>add to library>navigate to the music folder on the external drive and select it.
+This will add the music from this folder to the library without duplicating the music files.+
Now you should be able to play music from either location from the same library.
Keeping this library current will be the tricky part. And, you'll need to remember to reselect "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" when you option back into your mobile library. You'll need those music files when mobile.
    & how
I can transfer music from one library to another when I want to change the content of my 'mobile' library when I want to take my MacBook with me.
Option into your mobile library. Make sure "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is checked in the advanced preferences. Navigate via itunes file menu/add to library/ to the music folders you want to move into this library and add them.
Remember also, depending upon which library you are in, if you delete music from the library, you'll need to remember when you also want to delete it from the music folder, and when you want to leave it there for other libraries to access.
I hope that's not too confusing.

  • Backing up external hdds using Automator...?

I have 2 external hdds: hdd 1 is 250gb and hdd 2 is 500gbs. I want hdd 2 to backup hdd 1. Every change on hdd 1 is copied over to hdd 2, but I don't want changes in hdd 2 to be carried to hdd 1. How can I set this up on Automator?

Rsync is your friend here. It is a program accessible through the Terinal which can synchronize disk2 to to disk1.
you can write a short shell script to have rsync syncronize the disks, then have Cron run the script on a schedule of, say, every 30 minutes.
If you are not used to the Terminal, this sounds much more complicated than it is and you can post in [the Unix forum|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=735] if you need more help.

  • Install snow leopard on external hdd using windows

My laptop logic board broke. So I wasn't able to erase the hdd. So I took it out put it into my external hdd enclosure. Now I'm stuck on how I would reinstall a fresh copy on the hdd when I only have a windows computer available. I could get a Mac one but that would be a little harder to do, since I have one and I have to go outta my friends. Anyone have a way for me??

Ummm, this is posted in the forum for help with iTunes on Mac.
Fresh copy of what?  You're trying to install Snow Leopard on a Windows computer??  Or you are trying to install iTunes on a Snow Leopard drive in an external enclosure to run on a Windows computer?  Need some clarity here please.

  • How to share external HDD using SFTP or FTP on Mountain Lion?

    Hi,
I would like to know how to share my extrenal HDD connected to my iMac using SFTP or FTP. I have seen that it is possible on OSX 10.5 but not in 10.8.
    Thanks.

you could always download a free sftp server then you could make any drive external or internel avaible from ftp clinets
but imho it's a very odd way to want to share unless it's over the Internet then in all cases ftp and sftp the wrong solution
smd, airdrop and tons of others are more modern and faster and easier to share files between computers no matter the operating system

  • External HDD (used before on a Windows) doesn't work with new Mac

    Hi
I have this Seagate 1 TB ext HDD that I've been using with my old Windows, but unfortunately, when I connect it to my Macbook, I'm not able to make changes, nor can I edit or delete files or add new files to the HD. What should I do?
Thank you so much for your help.
edit: To answer a question by a fellow community member, the format is NTFS.
Message was edited by: azrimiskal (added format of NTFS to the question)

The link I gave you was to the MacUpdate.com page for Paragon NTFS.  Look lower on that page for the Similar Software section and see if any of them are free.
I am assuming an external drive in an enclosure.  Any drive will do so long as the enclosure that encloses it can talk to your mac (firewire is better than usb2 and thunderbolt better then either of them).  For example take a look at the selection at OWC.
Personally I like to buy empty enclosures (which you could get at OWC) and stick the drive of my choice in them.  That way I get to choose the drive of my choice (I like Western Digitals) and stick it in the enclosure of my choice.  I view enclosures as dumb boxes who's only goal in life is to let you communicate with the drive they enclose.  You can by "complete solutions", i.e., enclosures with drives and accompanying software.  In almost all case that software gets in the way and screws thing sup from the box just being a dumb box.

  • Restore external HDD using Time Machine

    Hello Apple users,
First let me explain my time machine set up so that you guys will be able to help me out. I've 2 external USB hard drives: one is 1TB and the other is 500GB. In the 500 GB USB HDD I store my main Aperture 3 library and other things like music, movies etc., and I use the other external hard drive to backup my files using Time Machine.
So after, I've backed-up my external hard drive as well as my mac using Time Machine, I can't access my backups in my external hard drive without connecting the 500GB hard drive. What I mean to say is that, when I enter Time Machine without connecting my 500 GB USB hard drive, I'm unable to see the files that are saved in the backup. Does that mean if my 500 GB hard drive goes kaput, I won't be able to restore those?
When I do connect the 500 GB hard drive, I can see the files that are stored there and the changes that took place using Time Machine.

    Everything Time Machine

  • Can't format external HDD using terminal: Error: -69877: Couldn't open device

Disk Utility won't format / erase Seagate Barracuda 2TB (ST2000DM001) - it is an internal drive but I connected it using a docking station via USB. The disk is brand new and unformatted. System indicates that it is S.M.A.R.T incompatible
When trying to erase the disk, I get error message "disk / link could not be found / opened".
I tried using terminal "diskutil eraseDisk HFS+ newdisk /dev/disk3" but I get this message:
    Started erase on disk3
    Unmounting disk
    Error: -69877: Couldn't open device
Any way I could force format the disk?

Thank you @MrHofman. I had a setup with 2 dock stations and 2 HDDs (my TimeCapsule had crashed and I needed to recover its content disassembling the "box"). I disconnected everything. I restarted the computer., I swithched the USB ports in which I had connected the dock stations; I swithched the HDDs from dock stations, and voilà, the system allowed me to format the "recovery" HDD. Sometimes the "simplest" solutions work...
@Linc Davis: prior to the fix described above, when trying to partition, same thing would occur : "can't open link / disk" error message. But now it seems to be working fine. Thank you anyway!

  • VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop Benchmark Comparison

This is a quickie benchmark of VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop using Super PI, PC Mark 05, and Passmark.
    VMWare Fusion 36932
    Parallels Desktop 3094 Beta 2
    Notes:
Both virtual machines were allocated with large 10+ GB virtual disks and 640MB of RAM. The VMWare CPU was configured with two processors. The Parallels CPU was configured with 1 (two is not available). VMWare reported the CPU as 1 physical, 2 logical processors running at 2.66 GHz while Parallels reported 1 physical, 1 logical processor running at 9.6 GHz (the combined speed of all four cores on the Mac Pro). The max observed CPU utilization in activity monitor when running under VMWare was 200% and max under Parallels was 173%.
I chose not to compare 1 VMWare CPU vs. 1 Parallels CPU. While Parallels does not support SMP or multithreaded processes on multiple processors the CPU utilization on the Mac went well above 1 core (173%). For this comparison, I wanted to see results of max processing based on what the two vendors have delivered, as opposed to benchmarking the underlying "virtual or hypervisor cpu" on a 1:1 basis. This explains why VMWare was 2x faster than Parallels on some CPU tests.
Both of these products are beta. VMWare is running in debug mode (can not be turned off in this beta).
Caveat emptor on these stats. This was an unscientific exercise to satisfy my curiosity. Some of the extraordinary differences are highlighted with <--.
    Platform:
Mac Pro 2.66 GHz, 2GB RAM, Nvidia 7300GT
    Disk 1 - OS X, 73GB Raptor
Disk 2 - dedicated disk where each virtual machine image was created separate from the OS or any OS-related virtual memory files.

Thanks for posting these numbers - it's an interesting comparison.
I would expect the final VMWare fusion performance numbers to be quite a bit better than that of Parallels - they have almost a decade's worth of experience more than the Parallels folks in this arena, and a much larger development team to boot.
Once VMWare Fusion is released to the public, I think that you'll see a clearer distinction between the two products. VMWare will continue to appeal to the professional customer, with a more robust feature set and corporate-friendly features (and a correspondingly higher price tag); Parallels will fall more into the consumer/VirtualPC-replacement market. It will be interesting to see how Parallels will be affected when (and if) VMWare player is ported to OS X.
Interesting about the Parallels performance stats on a native partition - looks like almost enough reason to avoid the bootcamp partition approach altogether. Sharing a native windows installation with a VM in parallels is a pretty scary situation in any case, as the two environments have entirely different hardware configurations. Do-able, but there is some black magic involved (if you want to see an example of what I mean, try to move a windows installation from one machine to another w/different hardware sometime - it ain't pretty); I wouldn't try this in a production scheme unless I had REALLY good backups.

  • Boot Camp partition added to VMWare Fusion...can't see original partition

I originally installed Windows XP Pro using Boot Camp. The partition was available using the OPTION-startup to select that partition.
Then I installed VMWare Fusion and had it "use" that Boot Camp partition so I could access it while running Leopard. Now when I use the OPTION-startup I don't see the original Boot Camp partition.
I check the information on my internal hard drive and it shows a total of 290Gb available when the hard drive is actually 320Gb (30Gb for the Boot Camp partition).
    I'm wondering my options:
    A. Can I use a Windows XP disc to install another Boot Camp partition or will it deny me because there is one still detectable?
    B. Can I restore the ability to see the apparent Boot Camp partition on the hard drive from the OPTION-startup screen?
    C. Is the simplest solution to reinstall Leopard and then reinstall the Boot Camp partition?
    Thanks for any help.

UPDATE: So I tried to reinstall Windows XP using the Boot Camp Assistant but after choosing to create a new 32 Gig partition, the Utility failed, said it could not be created and suggested I try running repairs on the disc using the Disk Utility.
After running the repair disk feature in the Disk Utility here's the results:
    Verifying volume “XXXXXXXX”
    Performing live verification.
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume file count
(It should be 933882 instead of 933883)
    Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 211965 instead of 211964)
The volume "XXXXXXXX" needs to be repaired.

If anyone would like to expand on this that would be great.
