VMWare Fusion on a MacBook Air?

Does anyone know whether I will be able to use VMWare Fusion on a MacBook Air?
I am already using it on a MacBook Pro with great success but when I mentioned that I was going to change to an Air I was told that it wasn't possible.

It works just fine on the MBair.  I'm running 3.1.3 but version 4 is out and has the best compatibility with Lion.

  • How Do I Find VMWare Fusion on my Macbook Air

I recently bought a Macbook Air that is supposed to have VMWare Fusion installed on it. Windows XP is installed on the partitioned drive. Where do I go to open VWWare Fusion? I don't find it anywhere on the computer. Thank you.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
if Fusion is already installed on your MBA, then you should find it in the Applications Folder.
If not, look for the Fusion installation CD and install Fusion from it.
Are you sure you have bought a Fusion license together with your MBA ?
Apple hasn't offered such bundle in the past, so it should be an offer from the store where you bought the MBA.
If in doubt ask them where Fusion is.

  • VMware Fusion v4 on MacBook Pro 17 vs. MacBook Air

    Hello everybody,
I have a problem with my early 2011 MacBook Pro 17'' when running VMware Fusion v4 Trial - both the VM as well as my MBP are running annoyingly slow when I start up a VM. Switching from the VM to a Mac app takes what seems an eternity. When setting up an OS in the VM, the Mac becomes almost unresponsive. This applies to VMs running Windows 7, Windows XP, Mac OS Lion.
I just can't believe that the MBP is not powerful enough to operate on Lion OS while running a VM at the same time. I have experimented giving the VM 1,5GB RAM and 2GB RAM - doesn't make a difference.
VWware slows my Mac down so much that both the Mac and the VM become unusable.
Same thing happened when I installed the Parallels 7 Trial.
I don't believe that the Mac has any hardware issue - it performs satisfyingly and is as fast as you'd expect from a current model, when not running any virtualization app.
And here comes the real catch now: on my mid 2011 MacBook Air - which has a slightly slower CPU - VMware is blazingly fast and I can use Mac OS in parallel without hardly noticing that the VM is running.
Yes, I am aware that because of the SSD the overall impression makes the MBA probably appear a lot snappier, but then again it has only 2 cores as opposed to the MBP's 4 cores. However, I had absolutely no issues running VMware Fusion v3 when I was still on Snow Leopard with my MBP17.
So the machine can't be the problem, it was running fine before Lion with VM application, but the VM software is doing fine on a MBA, so the only two explanations left that I have are: the combination must be the problem (MBP17 + VM) or the MBP17 has some funny setting that I am not aware of which slows it down that much.
    Does anyone experience similar problems?
Any solution for performance issues that anyone is aware of?
    Help greatly appreciated

Thanks a lot! Tried what you suggested and it actually seemed to improve VMware Fusion v4 in the beginning but I soon ended up with an estimated 30% of the performance for both the VM and the Mac.
Finally I tought - hey, the whole system (physical hardware and the VM) always becomes slow when there's acutal disk access... so I checked the disk in Disk Utility - and there it was: it needed repair. So I rebooted from an install disk and repaired my MacIntosh Hard Disk and there you go: MUCH better.
Switched from VMware Fusion to Paralles in the end because VMware had issues with IE in the VM and seemed slower.

  • How do I activate Windows 8 using vmware fusion on my MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook pro and there are a few Windows programs that I need to run. So I purchased VMWARE Fusion 5 and Windows 8 pro. I installed both with no issues except now I'm being prompted to activate windows. When I go to activate it with the product key, it says that the product key is only able to be used for upgrading, but not a clean install. I'm not sure what I need to do now. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes as with Windows 7 if you used a Upgrade Win 7 disc it won't WANT To Activate and to get around it you do another install of Win 7 over the top of the original Win 7 install and it make it look like you are Upgrading and allows you to use an Upgrade key.
MS really screwed up with Win 8. There really isn't any FULL VERSION Windows 8 install DVDs. They are all Upgrade DVDs no matter how much you pay for it. So to do a Clean install, on real hardware or in a Virtual Machine, you have to jump through some hoops.

  • CUC10.5 on VMware Fusion Pro 7 + Macbook Pro

Hello, I am trying to install Cisco Unity Connection 10.5.2 on VMware Fusion Pro 7 on my MBP. I read many posts before I decided to put my question here and I tried many tips, but I hope someone can solve my issue.
I installed 30-days version of Fusion, created new VM and tried to install CUC 10.5. The message I always get is
"Product not supported on current hardware : Cisco Unity Connection"
I tried many configurations. Firstly, I used:
http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Virtualization_for_Cisco_Unity_Connection (to specify hardware requirements according to the manual)
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/connection/10x/supported_platforms/10xcucspl.html
    My configuration was:
1 x vCPU (in Fusion it's rather number of cores - 1 core in my case),
    4 GB vRAM,
160 GB vHDD (pre-allocated, Bus type: "SCSI"),
1 x vNIC set as NAT (later tried with "Bridged" and "Host Only").
Every time I got the same result (see picture above). After hardware check (the initial step during installation) the installer says CUC is not supported on this HW.
I found someone succeeded with CUC 8 on Fusion: http://www.ccietalk.com/2010/11/21/installing-cisco-unity-connection-8-on-vmware-fusion
According to this I expanded my resources. Result was the same. My best configuration was 8 processor cores, 6 GB vRAM, 300 GB vHDD pre-allocated. (see files attached to this post)
Important fact - I installed Cisco Unified Communications Manager (the available product) on my hardware (with worse settings than I listed above).
Important fact - I installed Cisco Unified Communications Manager on Windows 8.1 using VMware Workstation 11. I am having the same problem trying to install Cisco Unity Connection on this W8.1 PC.
Both products are from the same .iso file.
Does anyone have a solution how to install it? I really need to sort it out...
Note - my spec: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), 2,6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, 500 GB SSD, OS X Yosemite 10.10.1, VMware Fusion Pro 7.1.0

Someone has 10.6 running in Parallels, not Fusion under 10.7/10.8

  • VMWare Fusion on MacBook Pro using Leopard OS

After installing VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro with Leapord, it does
not want to mount my external USB hard drives. Fusion sees the drive
and shows me that it is connected with the option to disconnect the
drive, but it doesn't show up on "My Computer". I have seen it show
up briefly, sometimes just after I reinstall Fusion tools, but then it
disappears usually within a couple of minutes. The USB drive is
formatted Mac OS extended and I have MacDrive 7 on Fusion to recognize
    Mac formatted drives.

"If you boot natively, you need MacDrive. But Fusion has trouble with accessing other drives connected (I have four)."
Yes, it seems very inconsistent, mounting one time then not the other. I just created a shared folder to my external USB drive in Fusion and access it that way. It's better since it doesn't
constantly mount and dismount from the Mac OS and give those "your drive was not ejected properly" messages. I've given up with trying to get fusion to mount my external USB drives. Parallels does it much better but I find Parallels so slow compared to Fusion that I
don't even bother with Par anymore.
"Did you install a BootCamp partition and then let Fusion take over? and do you have Fusion 1.1?"
Yes, I am using Fusion 1.1. I never did the BootCamp thing because I really need to work back and forth with my Mac and PC documents - can't' afford to reboot each time.
Have you done the BootCamp partition and Fusion take over? I am not really familiar with Boot Camp. Is it worth it? Can you swap files across OS's with Fusion and BootCamp?
    Thanks for the quick reply.

  • Experiences with Oracle 10g/11g RAC on VMWare Fusion for Macbook and OEL 5

    Folks,
I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro laptop computer to use for demos and testing with Oracle RAC. I am using VMWare Fusion for Mac OS X to setup new VM machines with Oracle 11g.
Thus far, I can setup single instance Oracle 11g database fine with OEL 5 (32 bit OS) as the guest OS. The problem that I keep running into due to the limitation with VMWare Fusion product is that I am not able to edit the VMWare network settings to allow multiple VM machines to communicate with each other. The second main issue that I currently face is that VMWare Fusion does not allow you to setup shared disks which are a requirement to install and configure an Oracle RAC environment. I came to the realization that after searching forums online that
one must setup a third VM machine to act as an NFS or iSCSI filer system to present to the other VM hosts for the shared storage requirement for RAC. Has anyone been able to do all
of this successfully with VMWare Fusion on a Macbook ? If so, I would definitely be interested in finding out how you did this. Specifically the following:
    1. Network configuration for each VMWare Fusion guest OS machine
    2. Shared storage ie) NFS or OpenFiler VM machine
    Regards,
    Ben

    Hi,
I'm facing the same issue.. If your issue is fixed..could you please let me know?
I'm trying to configure 11g RAC with OPenfiler and got stuck here.

  • VMware Fusion Issue

    Hello,
I have recently installed VMware Fusion onto my MacBook Pro running Leopard.
Install Process was very easy and simple. Once i installed VMware i then proceeded to install Windows XP Pro, then Norton 360, ran updates to windows, then installed Office 2003, ran updates etc..
All of this went very well and easily. However i have two issues.
    1) USB issues
Fusion does see a USB 4GB Memory stick inserted into the Mac, however the Windows session does not mount the USB stick so i can access the files Any ideas why?
    2) Need to increase the Virtual disk size on the VMware Fusion Windows XP session
I only configured 20GB of space (did not allocate all at once), however i need to increase the size of this virtual disk as 20GB will not be enough once i load all my work data into the Virtual session. Any ideas on how you increase the Virtual disk size or migrate this Virtual session into another Virtual session with a larger drive size?
    Thanks
    John

  • How can i use the webcam in the VMware fusion?

I am using Windows XP with VMware fusion in my MacBook( OS X 10.5.1). Everything is good except the webcam. I have no idea how can I use the webcam(built in MacBook). Can someone give me more information about that? Thanks a lot!

Not sure I quite understood your question? However, I am running Win XP in VMWare Fusion an all the peripherals such as Bluetooth, IR Receiver and the webcam are identified as USB device and are therefore supported. No problem to use it with Messenger, Skype or Trillian. The only thing you have to do is to click on one of the small USB symbols in the lower right corner of the VMWare status line in order to enable it for the use in VMWare. That's it.
Hope this helps to fix your problem

  • Microsoft Project on VMware Fusion on MacBook Air (13 inch, 2012)

    Hi there,
I am thinking about buying one of the latest 13 inch MacBook Air's. My business is primarily Windows based but all software and systems our company currently uses will all work with Mac except Microsoft Project 2010. I've heard that with the new VMware Fusion 5 (the industry standard) it is possible to run Windows apps as if they are a native Mac application including launching from the dock and compatibility with mission control - you effectively bypass the Windows operating system. However I need to be assured that I will not have any crashes or performance compromises as a result of running Project like so. Does anyone have any experience with the issue of Project? As an alternative I am considering Merlin as it seems pretty fully featured and supports importing and exporting of Project files (*.mpx), but I can't get it free..........
    Cheers,
    Sam

It's software.  Software crashes and has bugs.  You will get no assurance from anyone.

  • New MacBook Air & VMware Fusion Performance

Need to make a decision.  Has anyone installed VMware Fusion on the new MacBook Air?  If so, is the performance acceptable?  I have heard the previous Airs were from from acceptable.  Thanks in advance.
    DrB

I have heard the previous Airs were from from acceptable.
If the opinion is based on on the users' attempt to play a 3D game, I'd agree:  far from acceptable. The biggest failing of virtualization is graphics and since the MBA uses integrated graphics that effect is multiplied. However I've used VMWare and Parallels Desktop to run Windows 7 and Office 2010, for programming, surfing, and other less taxing programs with acceptable results. Acceptable enough that I've not had the desire to utilize BootCamp.
And in deference to SP Forsythe's comment about not using a Mac, several of my Windows using friends believe the MBA is the best Windows computer ever made.

  • Fusion or Parallels on Macbook Air?

What should I use... Parallels or Fusion to run WinXP on a Macbook Air?

After doing a google search, there were a couple of links that compared Bootcamp, Fusion and Parallels; I chose VMware Fusion. Mostly because I have experience with VMware products and I was just able to copy a VM guest (WinXP) from my Vista machine to my MBA.
With bootcamp I believe there were some problems with drivers (the trackpad and battery/sleep not working properly), you'd have to search for the details. Fusion is running great, no problems; I haven't tried Unity yet.

  • Macbook Air 11" (Basic model).  VM Fusion + Windows 8

I am just about to get delivery of my Macbook Air 11" (Basic model).  Does anyone know how well VM Fusion plus Windows 8 works on it?

Well I don't recommend Boot Camp at all. IMHO there is nothing worse then a Dual Boot System. You always find yourself needing to boot back into the other OS for something.
If you are buying a Mac then Use the Mac OS for most of your computer needs. The whole idea and the only reason, IMHO, of having Windows on a Mac is to run those Few programs that You Need that do not run on OS X.
If you need to use Windows as your Main operating system then buy a Windows PC, Not a Mac.
For the reasons stated above, IMHO, running a Version of Windows in a Virtual Machine is the best way to go. It allows you to run those Few Windows program that don't run on OS X and allows you to use both Operating systems at the same time.
When running any VM it will use RAM that you have allocated to it and take that RAM away from the Host OS. But that does not mean that RAM is Always used. When done working in your Windows VM and the programs you need to access Shut the VM down and all the RAM will then be back for use with the Host OS.
When you need to run the VM limit the porograms you have open in the Host OS so you Don't run out of RAM.
The whole idea of having many programs open on the Host when in actuality you can only work in one program at a time is just Dumb. Close the programs you don't need open before you start the VM OS. Doing that will greatly increase the amount of RAM for each system to use and your overall computer experience.

I recommend using Bootcamp instead of using VMWare Fusion. VMWare Fusion is running Windows virtually on your Mac, which means that it uses more resources and processor power. It tend to lag the computer, since it takes up alot of RAM, unless the MacBook Air you bought plenty of RAM. Bootcamp is installing Windows side by side with Mac. However the downside is that you can only run one operating system at a time, but that might not be too bad, one operating system running means a less of a hog for resources. For me, I would prefer Bootcamp, although restarting the computer numerous number of times is a pain, but the experience will be better. Gaming is alot better using Bootcamp. However, I cannot guarantee that Bootcamp will be right for you, especially with the lack of support of Apple. You can try Bootcamp first, and if you don't enjoy the experience, go ahead and try VMWare Fusion.
Windows 8 is not FULLY supported by Bootcamp drivers, however it works properly, and has only a few bugs. Consider trying it out.
Another thing I notice is that, for Bootcamp, the computer tends to get hot when running it. But I am not saying that VMWare Fusion will not make the computer hot. You are running two operating systems at one time.

  • Are there suggestions for managing Multiple VMWare Fusion systems sharing files with a MacBook?  Suppose I have enough ram for 3 servers to share files.

Suppose I have enough ram for 2 or three VMWare fusion systems to that could benefit from file sharing.  Is it possible to configiure each VMWare funsion instance to have a common read only file share on my desktop and a common read/write area on on my desktop?
This would allow me to extend the power and mustle of my Mac Book Air, Retina Display system to its best advantage.  Whether native Mac processing or speciality linux or Windows systems as needed.
I am having trouble allowing more than one system to share the same read only and the same read/write areas so that software does the file locking and merge controls.  Even if these do not share a common read/write area, it would be truly handy for drive space management for them to share a common read only area.
    Thanks for your thoughtful input.

    Don

It really denpends on the os running in the vm and what the permissions are set to on those shares.
I run a few vms on both a mac at home and windows at work and all other computers in my home or at work can connect to the vms without any problems. Even multiple computer at the same time.
It also depends on how you have set the vm up for networking. If you are setting it up as nat, instead of bridged, that can also cause problems access it from multiple system. With nat the vm is on its own network branch.

  • My iMac desktop and McBook Air laptop run on Mavericks, but desktop has VMWare Fusion and runs Windows 7 too.  Can I transfer this capability to my McBook Air?

My iMac desktop and McBook Air laptop run on Mavericks.  The laptop also runs Windows 7 via VM Ware Fusion.  Can I transfer this capability to my McBook Air, so I can run the same plus the Windows programs on my laptop?

Thanks Kappy, but I should add that my desktop runs VMWare Fusion and Windows 7.  My laptop and desktop basic operating systems are Mavericks.  When I travel, I take my laptop with me.  My desktop runs a Windows investment program I like, and I'd like to be able to use this program in my laptop when I'm on the road.  VM Ware said I could do this, but would have to make and then transfer a "file" of the programs in question. How would this be done, since it would involve 3 files:  Fusion, Windows 7 and the investment program?  Maybe Apple should do this at the genius bar?  Appreciate any comments...Thanks again, Patrick
