Vmware fusion windows 7 freeze

I am experiencing random freezes with my MBA w/Lion and VMWare Fusion 3.0 / Windows 7.  The freeze usually last 30 secs or so and then resolves by itself -- very frustrating.   OSX does not freeze - I can run my OSX apps fine.
When it isn't freezing Win7 response time is zippy and all works great.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,  KLB

I am running v3.1.3.    I did see that VMWARE recommends only allocated 1 virtual processor.   I have changed that to see if it improves the random freezes.  What memory and processor settings are you using for VMWARE on your MBA?

  • Vmware fusion/windows 7 for windows programming

I need to use a Mac and a Windows machine for teaching introductory CS classes - programming in java, web development, programming in visual basic and c#, etc.
    I have a 17" MBP running vmwareand windows 7.
So far it runs the following perfectly: ms office applications, dr. java, webuilder (web editor), etc. As far as I have tested it so far it is running Visual Basic flawlessly but I've only run a couple of programs.
Does anyone here have EXTENSIVE experience running:
    Java
    MS C#
    MS Visual Basic
    NetBeans
    Apache
    PHP
    and other similar environments
in a VMWare Fusion window with Windows 7 installed?
    Much thanks

Yes. I'm running Visual Studio, MS SQL Server, Apache/iiS (with PHP and MySql) NetBeans, Eclipse, WebBuilder, ExpressionWeb4, and several other SDKs and IDEs. No problems over about two years. Windows 7 64 bit, Fusion.

  • Display Questions with Retina and VMware Fusion (Windows 7/8)

Looking to buy my first MacBook Pro and looking to make sure I get the specs I need and have a couple of questions.
I would like to be able to run (simultaenously)
    During the day for work:
Windows 7 x64 - 30GB HD - 1 Core - 1GB Ram - Purpose: Has a VPN client that allows me to VPN and RDP only
Windows 8.1 x64 - 60GB HD - 2 Cores - 4GB+ Ram - Purpose: Office 2013 installed on this VM and all my other work applicatons (light weight)
OSX 10.10 - Whatever it can take - Light Web Browsing etc while at work.
    After work:
Guess it doesn't matter really - i'd like to play games (bootcamp fine) if possible too. Nothing crazy so barely worth mentioning.
    My main questions:
Display: Iris Pro or nVidia - Can the base 15 inch GPU/CPU handle the two VMs at the same time plus the host OS (OSX) without hiccups?
Display: How does VMware Fusion recognize the discrete GPU - will the system be smooth/quiet without activating it?
Battery life: Virtualization is pretty heavy battery wise. Does anyone know what happens to the battery when you're running a couple VMs?
Display: How is running Windows 7/8 on a MacBook with a specifically retina display? Do the Windows PCs look really ugly/blurry due to such a high resolution?
What is the minimum hardware required for these VMs to run fast and responsive? (CPU/GPU/RAM only)
    Thanks!!

Sorry - we're users here, just like you, and some questions just get lost sometimes.
The fastest hardware you can buy, the easier you'll be able to run Windows. If you use Boot Camp to run Windows (7, 8 or 8.1) the machine will run at it's best. If you want to run Windows alongside the Mac OS, you'll need to use a VM application (I use Parallels - I've tried VMwareFusion but like Parallels better and it just works best for me).
    So, to your questions:
The Retina machine with the NVIDIA GPU will be the fastest - it's a faster processor and has more VRAM.
Any VM is going to use resources - how much RAM, for example, is up to you. I have 16 GB of RAM and 8GB dedicated to Parallels/Windows 7 Pro.
I wouldn't (and you really can't) run a VM for very long on battery. If you're using VM's, that's the time to plug into mains. Running a 'couple' of VM would put further heavy use on your GPU, CPU and shorten your battery life.
I would make sure to get a good, fast quad-core i7 processor, the 2GB of VRAM NVIDIA GPU and the maximum amount of RAM (16GB).
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • VMware Fusion + Windows 10 = no network !

Hi all ,Strange thing , my colleague , who works on a Windows 10 inside VMware Fusion on his Mac encountered a strange problem. He was running Win 8.1 without problems. He upgraded to Win 10 without problems except the VPN software wouldn't work. So he uninstalled the software we use for VPN in order to reinstall the correct version ... but when he finished uninstalling the network adapter (virtual) won't come online again. It's marked as active , both in VMware as in Win 10 but it won't get an IP or anything. On the Mac machine it works without problems (network). He already reinstalled VMware tools , he reinstalled Windows 10 (repaired) , we tried creating an other virtual NIC without result , of course we also did IPCONFIG /RELEASE >> RENEW. Still nothing. One of the two NIC's shows up in the IPCONFIG /ALL but there is nothing IP...

  • VMWare Fusion, Windows 7, and Display Resolution

When I am running Windows 7 in VMWare Fusion I cannot chose any of my Apple hardware. I do not see the 27" Cinema Display or the trackpad.
I installed the latest drivers fo Book Campt, but I cannot open the BC control panel in Windows. I get an error:

ExpressCard isn't supported in the BIOS as bootable, no.
Can you even boot Mac OS X off ExpressCard?
You could pull the internal SSD and upgrade to another model.

  • Time Capsule Installation on VMware Fusion Windows xp and Mac 10.5.2 sides

I've got the Time Capsule w/ time machine working on the Mac side of my laptop, and yet am avoiding a second attempt to load / install the same on my XP side due to the first time I tried, it didn't work and I had to go back and re-install it on the Mac side.
I'm assuming that the currently working 'Time Machine' is only able to see and back-up, via the Time Capsule, the Mac side of the hard drive? Although, if it sees the whole drive, both XP and OSX sides, then all is good, and my windows based data is being backed-up.
Maybe the Time Capsule can only work with windows as an external drive,
and yet hoping it can also work as a semi automatic back-up disk.
Appreciate any insight, advise and/or references to material that would help.
    Thanks

I asked this very question on another forum, as I had received differing answers previously. Here is the link to my question and to the answers I received, which seem pretty dispositive. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=5305380#post5305380
As you will see, the short answer is that the Win side is not being backed up, but how you should configure your TM backups of your Mac side depend on whether or not you first partitioned with Boot Camp and then installed VM Fusion, or whether you installed Fusion without Boot Camp. (I now use Windows Live OneCare to back up the Win side to the TC, although configuring it to work with TC was a nightmare I care not to have ever to repeat.)

  • VMware Fusion Issue

    Hello,
I have recently installed VMware Fusion onto my MacBook Pro running Leopard.
Install Process was very easy and simple. Once i installed VMware i then proceeded to install Windows XP Pro, then Norton 360, ran updates to windows, then installed Office 2003, ran updates etc..
All of this went very well and easily. However i have two issues.
    1) USB issues
Fusion does see a USB 4GB Memory stick inserted into the Mac, however the Windows session does not mount the USB stick so i can access the files Any ideas why?
    2) Need to increase the Virtual disk size on the VMware Fusion Windows XP session
I only configured 20GB of space (did not allocate all at once), however i need to increase the size of this virtual disk as 20GB will not be enough once i load all my work data into the Virtual session. Any ideas on how you increase the Virtual disk size or migrate this Virtual session into another Virtual session with a larger drive size?
    Thanks
    John

  • Openvpn and vmware fusion - can os x and VM share a tun/tap device?

    tunnelblick 3.0b6
virtual machine is xp pro sp2
in mac os x tunnelblick is able to successfully create the vpn tunnel across the tun/tap device. when i execute ifconfig in terminal i see the tap device listed. when i look at system preferences -> network i don't see the virtual device listed. this is my first mac so i am not sure if that is expected behavior. just for the sake of comparison, the virtual device was listed in my "network connections" on my previous xp pro machine.
the vmware fusion windows xp VM however, only has access to the airport network connection. it would be nice if the xp vm could piggyback off of the os x tun/tap device. is this possible? at this point i am just going to install openvpn in the vm as well - nothing like having multiple vpn connections from the same hardware
i have read that tunnelblick has some issues on 10.5, but i have only noticed odd behavior when my laptop goes to sleep.
    thanks for any help!

So I'm a recent convert to Mac from Vista, and have the same config you do...
Use tunnelblick to establish the VPN, and configure your VM to Share the network connection (NAT). This will then allow your XP client to route traffic through the VPN tunnel.
I've also noticed issues w/ Tunnelblick VPN's when my MacBook goes to sleep (usually when I close the lid to go to a meeting). I'm sure there is some Mac Expert that has a "preferred" method to resolving this, but I found that going into Activity Monitor and forcing a quit on the "openvpn" process fixes the issue. This is basically resetting the tap0 adapater.
    Hope this helps.

  • My bluetooth keyboard is disconnected using VMware fusion

While starting up VMware Fusion (windows 7), my bluetooth keyboard is getting disconnected. I have OSX lion 10.8.3; I-Mac. What can I do to avoid that ? (My bluetooth mouse is functioning OK)

Hi All, thank you for you suggestions.  I have been unable to find any website for the maker, but have looked at several Thai/cambodian sites incl <http://www.buycoms.com/Article/8435/index.asp>  which mentions the keyboard being suitable for tablet or windows.  No mention of iMac!  although the box is branded to indicate Mac compatable.
I'm thinking that maybe it just will not pair with an iMac.
Ill keep looking for the maker website, which might come on later in the future? maybe?
    thanks again.

  • I have a MacPro late 2011 and each time I use the USB connection it freezes my desktop, also I have lost my windows OS on VMware Fusion,  regards  Bettws

I have a MacbookPro  10.6.8 and each time I use the USB connection it freezes my desktop, also I have lost my Windows XP operating system on VMware Fusion.  regards  Bettws

Energy Saver is very problematic with non-Apple USB devices.  Which means when you close the lid to your machine, those devices will not necessarily appear until you next restart the computer.
Secondly, Windows XP is not secure anymore, unless you pay Microsoft a special licensing fee.  To avoid that, upgrade to at leats Windows Vista:

  • 10.6.4 complete system freeze when resuming from screensaver-VMWare Fusion

I have a Macbook Pro, 3,1. I just upgraded to 10.6.4 and noticed the following symptoms:
Shortly after launching VMWare Fusion 3.1 running a Windows XP VM (from a Bootcamp partition), a series of pop up messages were complaining about a bad OpenGL driver. The message popped up repeatedly and wouldn't let me out, even though I kept pressing "Ok". I had to force quit Fusion, which caused a chkdsk on relaunch of the XP VM.
After a complete reboot, I started VMWare again. The Fusion complaints haven't shown up again, but when resuming from the screensaver, the system either completely freezes up, or the screen login window starts to flash rapidly and seize up. I'm running Spaces with 6 virtual screens. Whether I'm in the Fusion Spaces screen or any other Spaces screen, the system freaks out when resuming from a screensaver.
I use this system at work, so I have to be able to lock my screen when I leave my cube. The only way I've been able to ensure the system doesn't freeze up and cause a hard reset of the XP VM is to completely disable the screensaver and power saver features, such as Start Screen Saver = Never, Computer Sleep = Never, Display Sleep = Never and launch the login window by clicking on my user name in the upper right corner of the screen on the menu bar. Even that causes a sluggish screen and I'm not confident it will keep working. I also made sure (from day one) that the Windows XP screensaver functions were all completely disabled. I prefer to use the OS X screensaver for everything, if for no other reason than having a single screen locking/unlocking point for when I step away.
This was all working properly in 10.6.3. The only nit-nat I noticed about Fusion in 10.6.3 was that it had to be launched in the "Primary Window", which seems to be the upper leftmost Spaces desktop. If I ever moved it to, or started in any other Spaces desktop, it would also exhibit the same random lockups. Keeping it in the "primary" space seems to have stopped the lockups.
I noticed that there seemed to be significant updates to the OpenGL drivers in 10.6.4. I am experiencing an unfortunate side effect of these updates and hope I'm not alone and that a fix is coming soon. Looking at the other posts, there seem to be a lot of similar problems. I wanted to describe my configuration in case the Apple dev team reads these posts. Thanks.

I ended up doing an erase and fresh install of Snow Leopard (10.6.0), upgraded to 10.6.4 with the combo update, then a fresh install of all my apps, including VMware 3.1. Everything has been solid for 2 days now. I'm guessing that my system had a magic combination of issues that weren't visible in 10.6.3 but became obvious only after upgrading to 10.6.4. I had been upgrading my OS since 10.5.0 over the last 2 years and needed to do a clean re-install for some time now.
I'm guessing that others who are noticing problems with the 10.6.4 update have a similar situation with their installations. Think back on all the times a software installation failed, or the system required a hard boot. Plus, I had a lot of 3rd party apps on my box that never posted updates for later Snow Leopard releases, so who knows? Anyway, it's good to have a clean and snappy system again. A lot of my apps launch a lot faster now and survive the screen saver and power saver modes just fine.

  • VMware Fusion Freezes when i try to start it.

Hey guys, i have encountered a problem with Vmware fusion today. When i tried to turn it on it froze on me so i restarted my computer, after doing that I tried to run it again and as soon as it got up to the Windows XP screen it just freezes, i cant even move my mouse. Another restart after that gets me to the screen where i can choose Safe mode or normal mode, and when i choose safe mode it runs some commands and freezes again.
Also prior to the problem i used to just Suspend the VM all the time and exit out of the program instead of shutting it down. I am not sure if that caused it but that is just some extra info. I also tried updating it to the newest version but that did not help either.
So i am wondering is there anyway to save what i have on that VM? Or do i have to just uninstall, reinstall and make a whole new VM.
    Thanks for the help.

Fusion is a third-party product. Perhaps you should visit their forum to see if someone there can help you.

  • Run Windows 8.1 Pro on a SDXC card via VMware Fusion

    Hi everyone,
I'm kinda new to the whole Mac story.
Have been using iPhone and iPad from day one, but never could get myself to go off Windows.
    Well, a few weeks ago I bought myself a 13.3" MBP (Mid 2014 - 11.1 model).
It's the retina one with a 256GB SSD in it.
    Now my question is...
I have a license from work for VMware Fusion 7, and I need some programs to run on Windows.
But I don't wan't to partition my drive and run it via bootcamp, I want to keep my Mac clean.
Does anyone have experience or know if I can run this on a SDXC card?
I would use a 128GB SDXC card with 60MB/s write and 80MB/s read.
Can I stick this SD into the slot, install Windows 8.1 Pro via Fusion on this card and let it run on a decent level?
    Thanks in advance,
    And with best regards,
    Sonicje

Thank you for the fast responds.
I took a look into it and you are right.
The read/write speed is much higher and cheaper.
But, like I said, I'm nog willing to share my drive with Windows.
So I'm going to buy a 64GB USB stick (less than 60 euro) and going to install it on that source.
With 64GB I've some extra space for the futher if I need to work with more Windows only programs.
    Thanks again for the advice!

  • VMWare Fusion and Windows (any version)

Hey everyone, first of all I'm new to Macs so please don't flame me.
I recently bought VMWare Fusion 2.0 for my Macbook so that I can run my Windows XP Home Edition virtually from my BootCamp Partition without having to reboot in order to switch back and forth between the 2 operating systems.
However, I noticed that I cannot open files from Windows XP with Mac exclusive applications such as Garageband, iMovie, or even Preview without having to copy it to my Mac Partition and opening it from there. Is this feature available on VMWare Fusion? I know that for Parallels Desktop 4.0, which my brother uses, you can right-click on a file on the virtual Windows operating system, go to "Open with," and then there will be options to open the file for Mac exclusive applications in the list of recommended programs.
Thanks a lot for any help, feedback, or suggestions you guys can provide!
