VMWare Player Freezes on User Switching

Hello,
I'm running an AMD-64 X2 based system with 6GB RAM.  Host OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  Using VMware Player 3.0.1.
Guest OS is Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit.  Was originally built on an Intel based system, and complained when I switched it to an AMD system, but the image seems to run fine while it's active.
The problem I'm having is when I leave VMware Player running and somebody performs a Switch User from Windows to switch to another user profile on the same host machine.  The player seems to run OK in the background, but then when I switch back to the original user and attempt to resume working with the virtual machine, the Player seems to be locked up with only a black screen where the guest OS should be visible.
The only resolution is to use Player to force Power Off the guest OS.  I can then usually wait a bit, start Player, and re-boot the guest OS.
The issue seems to be related to Windows User Switching on the Host OS while running the guest OS.
  Any thoughts or ideas?
Thanks,
Tom

TallTomD > Any updates out there?  Anybody else experiencing similar issues?
Count me in!
Was using an old version and refused to update for a long time because it was working fine!
Finally, I gave in to security paranoia and updated to the latest version and: BOOM!
My VM locks-up upon user swithing!
OS: MS-Vista.
CPU: AMD-X3
RAM: 4GB
Any help on this?

  • Video freeze with Fast User Switching

I can't seem to find anything on this specific topic in the forums, but it's plagued me pretty much since I got the i7 iMac a year ago. The problem is this: when I have more than one account logged in via Fast User Switching, the video will freeze on me. Details:
    * by video I mean not the display as a whole, but any video content that is playing -- YouTube, iChat video, etc.
    * only the video freezes. Audio keeps playing.
    * if I close the other user account, video will resume its normal functioning.
    * if I constantly move the window in which the video is playing, it will keep playing.
    * if I switch away from the window and return, the video will play again for a brief second.
Those last 2 I find especially puzzling, and they lead me to believe that somehow the computer or the video card somehow is "forgetting" that it needs to redraw the video.
I brought this issue up to a very friendly and helpful Apple rep who suggested zapping the PRAM, which did help for a couple of days but even a restart will do the trick for a while.
Anybody else seen this issue? Any solutions?

Same here. Not specific to 10.7.x, had it in 10.5 and 10.6 as well. The problem is made worse when also using Screen Sharing. All video is stalled (audio plays on). Sometimes the video continues when the mouse is moved. The video also continues when the system volume is changed using the keyboard.
And with all video I mean really all video. Even transitions in the login screen pause until I press the volume keys.
Usually there is no problem with one specific user, and the stalls can usually be fixed by logging that user out, as if that user somehow "owns" the video of the Mac.
Very annoying, and I do hope someone has a solution.
Any specific stuff the other me too's here have installed? I've got Flash Player, Click2Flash, Perian, SizzlingKeys, Flip4Mac for instance.

  • Mac OS X 10.5.6 Fast User Switching Freezes Screen

The past two Mac OS X versions (10.5.5 and 10.5.6) result in the screen freezing after initiating Fast User Switching. Version 10.5.4 worked as designed, but 10.5.3 had the same issue. Seems to be video display related. Using a 20" display does not result in the screen freezing. Has anyone else had this issue or have any fix suggestions?

  • Fast User Switching causing iMovie 09 to hang/freeze

I recently purchased a new Unibody 2.4Ghz MacBook Pro 15.4"
My wife uses it to process our home movies in iMovie '09. So I thought it would be swell to utilize Fast User Switching so she could do that with her account when the MacBook was free and wouldn't have to mess with my currently logged in session.
But it seems iMovie '09 just doesn't like it. Every single time she works in iMovie for awhile, then I Fast Switch back to my logged in session, then she Fast Switches back to hers with the open iMovie ... The iMovie locks up/freezes with the spinning pinwheel of death and has to be Forced Quit. And sometimes it is hung so bad I can't kill it or switch back to my session or anything and I am forced to reboot =\
Is this a known issue? Anyone else notice this problem? And most importantly is there anything I can do, or is there any update that could be coming down the pipe, that will fix this?
    Thanks.

have you found anything on this?  I have a Mac mini running two displays... neither USB, and experience this consistently.  not finding many cases on the internet for this - sounds like a rare issue.  suspicious could be linked to video - my two displays are at a pretty high resolution.

  • Fast User Switching Freeze

My wife's Macbook has been having a problem for the past couple of months. If she attempts to switch users (away from my son's account) using the fast user switching, the screen goes blue and just seems to hang there. She usually just forces it to shutdown and restart. She has noticed that she can switch to the login window, then select her account, and all works well.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any fixes out there? Google has not revealed anything on this.

Have same problem now with my iMac -- when I had it in the past, it was due to account privilege issues -- if one of the accounts did not have admin privileges, but another did, system was prone to freezing. I suspect permission problems. I'm not sure this is the current problem on my machine; problem does not occur if I log out of one account before switching back to the first account.
Try making all accounts admin & see what happens...

  • Portege R-400 3G modem freezes VMWare Player 3.0 in Windows 7

    Hi all,
I have a following problem need your help.
I have a Portege R-400 with 3G modem build-in. It is installed Windows 7. Everything is fine until I install the VMWare Player 3.0.
Without 3G modem connection, every application still works very well. (I use WiFi most time.)
When I am not able use WiFi and connect with 3G, without starting VMWare Player, the system is frozen in 5 to 20 minutes.
The sympton is no any response for keypad and mouse, but can see HD light in flashing.
Next, I will try Virtual PC from microsoft. It may have same problem, too.
It will be very appreciated if there is any solution for this problem.
    Many Thanks!
    Mike

    Thanks, Dr. Lamp.
I fully agree your analysis. So, over the weekend, I re-install the windows 7 system. Unfortunately, this problem remains.
    From my experience,
    1. this problem is isolated in 3G HSDPA modem.
    2. the 3G modem meeds to be connected.
    3. there is no any other connection available.
So, the potential problems are in:
    1. 3G modem driver.
    2. The way of the host machine (Windows 7) acceses and manages the 3G modem.
    3. The way of VMWare acceses 3G modem.

  • Issue with VMware player - trying to install Windows 7 on a virtual machine

I'm currently using the basic version of VMware player (not the pro version)
I create a new virtual machine. VMware player automatically detects my Windows 7 bit installation disc
    in my attached CD/DVD drive.
in the next screen, i select my operating system version and fill in my windows license key
then there is a progress bar with the title "creating disc" which takes about 10 minutes to complete
after installation, the virtual machine launches.
It says (white on black background)
    Network boot from Intel E1000
    PXE-E53: no boot filename recived
    PXE-M0F Existing Intel PXE Rom.
    Operating system not found.
on the bottom of the virtual machine window it says "easy install is installing Windows 7 64 bit",
however my CD/DVD drive is not spinning and there is no progress leaving this alone for 30 minutes.
I then rebooted the Virtual Machine and went into the bios to update the boot order
with the CDrom 1st, then the hard drive and then the network.
I still get the same errors.
I also tried the same process with my Windows Xp installation disc, same issues
    Any advice would be appreciated

Jmattson, good idea I'll try the manual install. user "aka", I did check the bios, intel virtualization is enabled.

  • BUG - client-side iPad keyboard in MRD 8.1.5 is mis-mapped for remote VMware Player console on Windows 8.1 Pro

Client system: iPad 4 running iOS 8.1.1
    Client language/locale: US English
    Client app: MRD 8.1.5
Server system: 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro
    Server language/locale: US English
Problem: client-side keyboard in MRD 8.1.5 does not work properly within VMware Player 6 console only
When interacting with VMs through the VMware Player 6 console app on the remote Windows 8.1 host, the client-side iPad keyboard for MRD 8.1.5 is not properly mapped. Letter keys and the top-row number keys send function keys or non-standard key scan codes
that aren't used by traditional PC keyboards. The spacebar sends the D key, and some keys send nothing at all. Many other keys work properly, including the client-side numeric keypad, and uppercase letters sent by using the Shift key (but not the iPad up-arrow
shift key). The only way to send the proper keystrokes to VMware Player from MRD 8.1.5 is to not use the client-side iPad keyboard and instead switch to the on-screen keyboard provided by the remote Windows server.
This problem only occurs within the VMware Player console app, and only with RDP connections that use the MRD 8.1.5 client on iOS. I do not encounter the problem with other iOS RD clients such as iFreeRDP by Thinstuff or Pocket Cloud Remote Desktop by Wyse.
    Steps to reproduce:
Connect to Windows 8.1 Pro system from the MRD 8.1.5 client for iOS 8.1.1
Using the client-side iPad keyboard within MRD 8.1.5, bring up the Run dialog by typing Windows-R
Launch Notepad by typing notepad.exe in the Run dialog and pressing Enter on the client-side iPad keyboard
Type some sample text in Notepad until you're confident that the client-side iPad keyboard is functioning properly
Launch VMware Player 6 and start up a VM (mine was Windows Server 2008)
Open the sign-on prompt in the VM by sending Ctrl-Alt-Ins from the client-side keyboard or by pressing the Ctrl-Alt-Del icon in VMware Player
Touch or click in the password field in the VM to ensure it has keyboard focus
Using the client-side keyboard, try to type letters or numbers in the password field, and notice that dots generally do not appear for most keypresses
Switch to the server-side on-screen keyboard and delete the contents of the password field if it is not already empty
Use the server-side on-screen keyboard to sign on to the VM
Inside the VM, open Notepad or some other text editor
Enter text into the editor from both the client-side and server-side keyboards to verify that only the server-side keyboard is functioning properly within the VM
This issue is the only problem I'm having with MRD for iOS, and I hope it is resolved soon.

  • Problem installing Free BSD 64-bit with VMware Player on Thinkpad W510

I installed VM Ware Player on the latest Thinkpad W510 with a 2.66ghz Intel processor. I am getting an error message indicating that the CPU doesn't support long mode. I was advised by the freenode #freeBSD channel that long mode is x86_64/amd64/emt64. This same channel also suggested that I tell vmware it was a 64bit guest. But I don't know how to do this. How do I do this? VMware Player didn't offer me any user options during the install. Is this something I should setup in the bios of the Thinkpad? Or something else? Is there more than one version of the VMware pLayer?

Look on BIOS if VT is enabled.
    Best regards.

  • Trying to install Vmware Player on OEL and running into an error

    All
I need to run a preconfigured Vmware VM on one of ours Enterprise Linux servers. I've already installed VMware-Player-3.13.*.bundle on the machine, no error message, but now when I try to run vmplayer I am getting the following message :
before you can run vmware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel:
    kernel headers 2.6.9-89.0.0.0.1ELxenU
kernel headers for version 2.6.9-89.0.0.0.1ELxenU were not found...
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks and regards

    Thanks Avi for the pointer.
I did a 'sudo -su ' and ran 'rpm -ivh kernel-xenU-devel-2.6.9-89.0.0.0.1.EL.i686.rpm' and it went through successfully.
But then when I launched VMPlayer, a popup came up saying " Before you run VMWare, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel.". I clicked on 'Install' to continue.
Another popup came up saying "Failed to run /usr/bin/vmware-gksu '/usr/bin/vmware-modconfig' --icon='vmware-player' --appname='VMware' --gcc='/usr/bin/gcc' --headers='/lib/modules/2.6.9-89.0.0.0.1.ELxenU/build/include' --gcc-ignore-minor as user root. Failed to exec new process. No such file or directory."
And then I had to exit.
This is the log contents when VMPlayer was run :

  • Running VMware Player just to Run iTunes?

I've been running Vmware Player (free) from Vmware.com JUST so I could run iTunes on my Linux machine. The desktop integration is fairly good, so its not that much of a pain, but I do have to have a license for Windows to make this all work legally.
Since OS 10 is essentially a rip of FreeBDS, which is a close cousin of Linux, why can't Apple come out with a Linux version of iTunes? It would be so much easier to use than having to run a virtual machine JUST to run ONE application.
    Is anyone else doing this?
Any other recommended solutions for Linux users?
(No, I'm not willing to jailbreak/hack my iPhone just to use some half functional third party Linux program. I want legal full functionality without risk to my warranty).

Try to unistall it clean using that microfoft utility
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/program_install_and_uninstall/
make sure to get rid of all apple stuff using that program, one by one.
Then download installer again, but before disable all firewalls and antivirus.
    and install.

  • VMWare Player Pro Central Management?

If we use VMWare Workstation software installed on a server to create VMWare Player Pro restricted VMs and then we distributed those VMs to user's workstations, how could we manage those VMs at a console level without having to log into each user's workstations?
By joining the VMs to a domain and connected network, we can do remote management of the VMs in Windows via AD Group Policy and other tools, but does VMWare Workstation allow you to remotely connect to them at the console level and shutdown, power on and reconfigure the VMWare Player Plus VM "hardware?"

today I've updated to 3.9.6-1 kernel and all went good. So I wanted to start my vmware player to start a vm. Of course I've done the needed steps in the vmplayer wiki page to setup the new headers and stuff after kernel update for vmplayer. Also I've ran "vmware-patch -f" and ran trough. But still get an error when I wanted to start the player in the "/tmp/vmware-root/vmware-modconfig-11986.log":
