VMware Tools now broken with gcc 5.1.0 upgrade

This is more of a VMware Tools problem I believe as the community currently has to "patch" the vmware-tools-distro.pl script manually to get it to compile vmhgfs (which is used for file sharing between host and the Arch guest).  I am starting a thread here to document any resolve, which currently there is none...
Around April 28th, the Arch linux kernel was compiled with gcc 5.1.0, even though gcc 4.9 was in the repository.  This started the problems with vmware tools install:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=196915
I was able to resolve it by recompiling the kernel using the gcc 4.9 on the system.  All attempts at upgrading gcc to 5.1.0 failed, because as I was able to build the tools using gcc 5.1.0, the VM was lockup when trying to enable the kernel modules for vmware.  Both on script install, and during reboot.
Today I've upgraded my system and found gcc 5.1.0 upgraded.
I switched back to using the core kernel (compiled with gcc 5.1.0) and allowed gcc 5.1.0 to be installed.  I rebooted and got a panic from the vmhgfs not being able to run, and was dumped to emergency mode.  (Do note that I have vmhgfs in my fstab, this is most likely why it failed on boot)
So, I went into vmware-tools-distro, my patched version (see link above), and attempted to rebuild the vmware tools under the kernel compiled with gcc 5.1.0 and with gcc 5.1.0.  Yay, it found gcc binary this time - the 5.1.0 version.
Unfortunately, the same previous 5.1.0 errors exists:
* during vmware-tools-install.pl, it won't compile vmhgfs with errors of functions not found.  needs to be patched (vmware issue, ignore)
* during vmware-tools-install.pl again with patched script, it compiles just fine.
* but during the Kernel Modules enabling portion, the system hangs / freezes / halts.  Hard reset is only resolve.
* on system boot, system hangs / freezes / halts on vmhgfs initialization.
Only current resolves are:
* Do not use file sharing (not an option)
* Install gcc 4.9 and recompile your kernel (I already have one, so i am using it)
This is obviously not a long term solution.

I have switched to the Open VM Tools, the public domain versions, and am running into exactly the same "vmhgfs" problem: system panics/hangs/locks when trying to mount the share.
I posted a bug report over in VMware... But considering they haven't even fixed the build issues with VMware Tools in 7 months (dev says he has fixed it, but it's not released yet), I seriously doubt that gcc 5.1.0 will get any attention before the next year.
Guess I may be going back to VirtualBox after all.  But the 3D acceleration sucks in that, as well as disk I/O.

The filesystem driver (vmhgfs module) is used only for the shared folder
feature. The rest of the software provided by VMware Tools is designed to work
    independently of this feature.
If you wish to have the shared folders feature, you can install the driver by
running vmware-config-tools.pl again after making sure that gcc, binutils, make
and the kernel sources for your running kernel are installed on your machine.
These packages are available on your distribution's installation CD.

  • VMWare Tools Fails to Install - Guest OS Windows 8.1 - vSphere 6.0

    Hi,
I am having issues installing VMWare tools on a Windows 8.1 guest. I recently upgraded from ESXi 5.5 to 6 and used the automated upgrade. I logged on to one of my Windows 8.1 VMs and noticed that a glibc error was popping up related to VM Tools so I uninstalled and attempted a reinstall. VMWare tools now does not install.. I believe this is the relevant section of the logs before it rolls back:

Can anyone shed some light on this? I think it has something to do with cscript.exe, when I attempt to run it from a command prompt I get an error that the program or feature cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit version of windows. cscript located in syswow64 works, is there any way I can force it to use that?
    Thanks!

OK, got a bit further... forced it to use the cscript.exe executable that actually works but now receiving this error:

  • Workstation 11.1, Tools 9.9.2 build-2496486: Not compatible with GCC 5.1.0 on linux (Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, etc)

First, there are some compilation problems with the latest linux kernel and Tools 9.9.2's source of vmhgfs: vmhgfs module not compilable for VMware Tools 9.9.0 (Fusion7.1) after Ubuntu Linux kernel update to 3.13.0-46-generic (Febr. 2015) (Shared Folder Feature not working in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Guest) on MacOSX Yosemite (Host))?
In short, you have to patch the source to get it to compile: rasa/vmware-tools-patches · GitHub
Arch linux is a "rolling" distro, meaning we always have latest - and are usually the first to find problems before it trickles down to Ubuntu, Mint, Debian and other Linux distros. Well, now there is a serious problem that is unresolvable.
The vmhgfs source is not compatible with linux kernels built with gcc 5.1.0.  It hard locks the VM, requiring a hard reset when the kernel module loads.  It also hard locks during vmware-tools-install.pl torwards the very end when it says, "Guest filesystem driver" enabling.  And on boot, it is vmhgfs that is being loaded when the VM hard locks.
I was able to get around this earlier when gcc 4.9.2 was in core - i just rebuilt the kernel under 4.9.2: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=196915
Obviously that isn't a long-term solution.  But now that gcc 5.1.0 has been pushed out to core, that means recompiling the kernel under 4.9.2 is no easy feat since dependencies now depend on gcc 5.1.0.
@Developers: We have a big problem with VMware Tools vmhgfs and kernels compiled under gcc 5.1.0.  Given it make take years before the Debian distros get the latest and greatest, it's coming.
Because of this, and the wasted time in me having to support this mess, I may recommend to my company we no longer continue with our Enterprise account of 100 licenses of Workstation and Fusion.  It is obvious in the previous thread vmhgfs module not compilable for VMware Tools 9.9.0 (Fusion7.1) after Ubuntu Linux kernel update to 3.13.0-46-generic (Febr. 2015) (Shared Folder Feature not working in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Guest) on MacOSX Yosemite (Host))? that VMware is no hurry to resolve even the simple build errors that the community has resolved last year with patches.  Good thing too, renewal comes up in two months.
I shiver to think how long it will take VMware to release a fix for gcc 5.1.0.

    Additional info...
The hard lock is a panic when mounting the /mnt/hgfs partition, which is what is configured in my fstab:
    .host:/
    /mnt/hgfs
    vmhgfs
    defaults
    0 0
The reason the above is just "./host:/" is for the auto-mounting of shares on the fly, or all shares on boot.  Specifying a share doesn't change anything.
Even mounting it manually panic's the kernel:
    mount -n -t vmhgfs .host:/<shared_folder> /home/user1/shares
Again, this all worked fine with a kernel built on 4.9.2, but not 5.1.0.

  • VMWare Tools install still blocked with 10.5(1)

I just upgraded CUCM and CUCX from 9.1 to 10.5(1) and ran into the issue described in CSCul78735 so it doesn't appear completely fixed. I wasn't able to upgrade VMWare Tools until setting SELinux to permissive mode.

    Hi Gagarin,
I have recently upgraded 5 servers to 10.5.2.11900-3.  With 2 servers I tried updating the VMware tools automatically through the vSphere client.  The result was that the VMware tools were uninstalled from the VM.  With the other 3 servers I selected the interactive install and used the 'utils vmtools refresh' command.  Updating the tools on these 3 servers was successful.  On the 2 servers that were not successful I am unable to use the 'utils vmtools refresh' command because I get a message stating "No VMware Tools install currently exists on the system...restart the system..." but after multiple reboots VMware tools still do not reinstall.  I have set the 'utils os secure permissive" but that has not helped.  The tools have now been uninstalled and I can not find a method to reinstall without TAC.  TAC could probably install from root but instead has only emailed and recommended that I install a mystery COP file but they have not provided information on where I can locate a COP file for 10.5 and I believe that is because there is not a COP file available.  If you would still like to troubleshoot this issue please let me know.
For others looking to upgrade the VMware tools I recommend the approach of using the 'utils vmtools refresh' command from the cli.

  • I have an ipad I used with a computer which's now broken. I bought a new Macbook Pro and signed into iTunes with my usual Apple id and pw. I connected my ipad to the new Macbook but it won't back up my photos or Apps from the ipad to the new macbook. Help

What do you mean " back up my photos or Apps"?
The photo sync is one way - computer to ipad.
You can transfer itunes purchases.  Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases
Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

  • My iphone is synced and backed up with another computer which is now broken... and i have synced it with a new one but when i want to do anything itunes says all data will be erased and replaced with the current itunes library?what do i do?

my iphone is synced and backed up with another computer which is now broken...i have synced it with my new computer  but it hasnt transfered anything over to itunes and when i try to add anything to my iphone it says all data will be erased and replaced with the current itunes? i dont want to lose all my apps and music.... i dont know how to go around this problem? i want to back it all up and sync it properly to my new computer so that is now my main computer , so i can add ring tones and music etc with out it erasing everything ive got. any answers would be great and muchly appreciated. thanks, im not sure what operating system my iphone has either.....

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy of your computer to put everything on the new one.
It sounds like you have failed to do this, which is not good at all.
You will have to transfer your itunes purchases from your iphone.  Authorize your computer for your itunes account
About iTunes Store authorization and deauthorization
Open itunes, plug in iphone, do NOT sync, click File>Transfer Purchases
When you do sync you will lose your pics ( photo library - synced from your old computer), your itunes content ( music, apps, videos, etc) , your contacts and your calendars.  So do NOT sync yet.  This is why a backup copy is so important.
Enter one unique contact and calendar entry on your computer.
When you first sync, you should get the option to merger the data.  Choose it.
If you want your pics, then you will need to e-mail them to yourself before you sync.  They will not be of the original quality as they are reduced when synced to iphone.
When all is as goos as it can be, then backup your computer, and always maintain the backup.

  • CS6 DPS tools have broken CS6 licensing - Now Asking for Adobe Sign In

    Hi,
Hoping I can get some guidance from someone or even an Adobe tech?
Currently my problem is that after I install the DPS v29 tools from here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=182&platform=Macintosh) my previously activated InDesign CS6 now prompts with the sign in window on every launch. Rebooting or clicking cancel does not rid me of the error.
I did have to script the update as AAMEE does not recognise the update??  (http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/deployment-dps-toolkit-update-aamee.html) and before running that script I had to change the AdobeUpdaterAdminPrefs.dat file.
My CS6 design standard package was created with AAMEE 3.1 Serial added, all updates applied, EULA and the improvement program disabled, air installers disabled, ignore conflicts ticked, update manager disabled.
So far I have tried the following
Using adobe_prtk unserialized and then serialized.
Updated AAM to version 7 from 6.2.112.0 wihch was installed when the package was created with AAMEE
Created a new Trial install of CS6 standard using AAMEE, applying the DPS update and then adding serial via adobe_prtk
All of these attempts to get InDesign CS6 back to an activated working state have failed.
Our estate is OSX 10.8.5, and I'm loosing the will to live with all this over engineered garbage that causes lost hours, days or even weeks of IT admins time and money.

    Oh I see,
The window looks so similar to other activation windows, I had only ever seen the DPS login for CS5 which was in the Panel.
Be good for this window to have some text that relates to DPS. Maybe Sign in to DPS or you must sign in with an Adobe ID to use the Digital Publishing Suite and the Folio Builder.
    Thanks

  • Impossible to unlock iphone if the device I synced with is now broken?????

I have a locked iPhone and the laptop I originally set it up with is now broken and has no Internet access. I can't work out how to restore my phone to unlock it, I have tried using an iPad or MacBook but says I can't do that until the phone is unlocked as it is not the original device I synced with.

Not sure what the problem is here.  Have you forgotten your unlock code? Are you trying to restore your phone from iTunes?  Just trying to get some details here.
And if your laptop is broken does that mean that you cannot turn your laptop on?  Or just no internet access?
If the laptop still works without internet you should be able to start iTunes and connect the phone to it using the sync cable.
Please give us some more details.

  • Home Sharing wasn't turned on on my, now broken computer, that won't start. Now I can't syncronise my iTunes on my new computer with my iPod

I had my iPod connected to a computer that's now broken and now it won't start. Now I can't use Home Sharing on my new computer, since it wasn't turned on on my first computer, and I can't syncronise my iPod with my iTunes library. The only thing I can use iTunes for now, is to hear music from my computer... What can I do?
I'm pretty desperate for help; it would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it  says place the iPod in recoverymode use one of these programs.
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    and
    RecBoot tip
    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Plug your phone into the wall charger for at least 30 minutes...make sure you have a sim card in the phone...then:
Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new.
Make sure you have no anti-virus software running or any firewalls...turn all of that stuff off.

None of the pre-built vmmemctl modules for VMware Tools is suitable for your
running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmemctl module
for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)?
    [no]
The memory manager driver (vmmemctl module) is used by VMware host software to
efficiently reclaim memory from a virtual machine.
If the driver is not available, VMware host software may instead need to swap
guest memory to disk, which may reduce performance.
The rest of the software provided by VMware Tools is designed to work
    independently of this feature.
If you want the memory management feature, you can install the driver by
running vmware-config-tools.pl again after making sure that gcc, binutils, make
and the kernel sources for your running kernel are installed on your machine.
These packages are available on your distribution's installation CD.
