VNC PC -- Mac

Hello, I'm wondering whether anyone has done any testing or heard of any testing done and the fastest VNC program for connecting to a Mac from a PC remotely.
I use TightVNC, and have used it extensively to help people troubleshoot problems with their PCs, but it seems that using it to connect to a Mac is much slower. I can say this with some confidence because I have both a Mac and a couple of PCs running at home and when I'm at work I can connect to all of them via TightVNC, but my user experience in connecting to the Mac is not nearly as good as with the PCs.
I've heard of Chicken of the VNC, RealVNC, etc., but being lazy, I searched this forum to see if others have already done the legwork I might need to do to determine which program might work the best, didn't find anything so am now posting this.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response Bob. It looks as if Vine Server is designed to run on the Mac. With Leopard, VNC is already built in, so I'm looking for the fastest client to access it from a PC, not install a server.
But I might up trying to run it alongside the built-in version if it handles TightVNC client access better.
Thanks!

hi, we are using mac mini's for our developement purpose. connecting the same through using Real VNC. Mac mini's are late 2009 and 2010. Now we have upgraded them to 10.8.5. after upgrading having display issues after launching the simulators, we are unable to view the icons we need to move the simulator (into different places) to view the icons.
Also we are having Mac book pro's (Late 2009 & 2010) after upgrading them to 10.8.5. Unable to launch the mac, getting only white screen with apple icon.
Let me know is there any specific Hardware (Graphic Cards) we need to use for the same.
Please provide me the early solutions.
    Regards,
    Suresh.

    Hi, try this first...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • VNC into Mac and keyboard layout

    Hi,
I'm trying to get keyboard layout mapping to work between the mac mini which is the VNC server and any remote VNC clients (linux, windows, mac). Tried ultravnc, tightvnc, realvnc clients. And 10.5.x built-in as well as Vine VNC servers. The mini has an Alphagrip keyboard with US+Finnish layouts. The client PCs have Finnish layout typically, also US or German.
Problem is that any pipe, tilde, @ etc "special" characters typed through the clients end up as umlauts or other characters in the VNC.
Any suggestions how I could make VNC work so that the VNC keyboard layout is always the client layout?
    Thanks,
    - Jan

    Thanks for pointers!
Setting "US" in OSXvnc did not work with any local client-side layout, oddly not even EN/US local + EN/US remote with OSXvnc use either "US" or "Current Layout".
But the following nearly works. Client Finnish keyboard, server Mac Mini Finnish keyboard, for the ultraVNC client change Finnish/FI to US winxp locale (using XP's/Vista's Language Bar), in OSXvnc choose "Current Layout" and set global Mac layout to Finnish.
I.e. have same keyboard at both ends but set the "wrong" US locale in WinXP for the ultraVNC client.
Now nearly everything works (with this laptop and server) - all umlauts and special characters. The only and unfortunately also critical problem is that the key "|" does not "work", it outputs "'*" instead. On the Mac the key is on the left of spacebar, on the client on the right. I don't see how this alone could change the scancodes. But apparently it does. Because it does not work.
Is there not some UTF / Unicode version of VNC for all OS X, Windows, Linux?
Or some VNC that would handle keyboard layouts smartly, transparent to the user?
Another option, IME with RDP (MS Terminal Services, rdesktop) there is no problem with keyboard layouts. Perhaps you guys know some RDP server for OS X?

  • VNC from Mac to Windows

Is it supposed to be possible to connect to a VNC server on a Windows machine (on the local network) using Leopard's built-in screen sharing? I tried using "Connect to Server" with the url "vnc://192.168.1.161" and it seems to try forever without connecting. But I can connect to that IP address using "Chicken of the VNC" with no problem.
Apple's documentation talks about "other computers" on the network without saying they have to be Macs.

If my firewall was preventing VNC connections, wouldn't that keep Chicken of the VNC from making the connection?
If I recall correctly, Microsoft's "Remote Desktop" is not available with all versions of Windows XP, or at least not for free. I'm using a server from realvnc.com. It must be set up correctly because, as I said, I can connect to it with Chicken of the VNC.
I haven't tried it with any other computers. (I'm not at that location right now.)

  • Screen Sharing issue with VNC from Mac to PC - Black Screen

I have a Mac mini at my place of work. From it, using the built-in VNC capabilities in Leopard, I am able to successfully VNC to any Windows-based PC. I have a Mac Pro at home that tomorrow I am taking to my office. From my home I VPN into my office and want to VNC to my computers from the Mac Pro sitting at home. VPN connects just fine and when I attempt to VNC, I get a response from the computer at work and am prompted for the password and then I get connected. The problem is that the VNC screen is black. I can see that I am connected to the right computer because it's name is at the top, but there is basically no display. Tomorrow the Mac Pro will leave my home to be placed in my office. However, I am going to get an iMac for my home and need this functionality. I anticipate that I will have a similar problem with the iMac and would like to get it fixed now. Any thoughts on why I am seeing this? BTW...VNC works fine using Chicken of the VNC on my old iMac G3 running Panther over the VPN.
    Thanx...Jon

I have the exact same problem! I can connect using RealVNC viewer, but, on Leopard's in-built Screen Sharing app, I can authenticate, and see the computer name on top, but, there is simply no display! I have opened all ports on my router, and completely doing away with the Leopard firewall also doesn't seem to help!
    Any leads yet?

  • How to control a mac mini 10.4 from a mbp 10.5 over a wireless network

Can I access the screen of a 10.4.11 mac mini ppc from my macbook pro 10.5.6 and control it/check mail on it etc over a home wireless network? I have tried turning on windows sharing on the mac mini, but still can't access it from the mbp - I've tried searching in discussions without much success - is there a thread I should have found?

I searched for info on chicken of the vnc and found this site http://www.wikihow.com/Setup-VNC-on-Mac-OS-X
I did what it said and it worked fine. Chicken of the vnc worked quicker than jollyfastvnc in a quick comparison.

  • Remote Connecting to a PC from my Mac

Hi, I am wondering how I can essentially "screen share" with my friend using a pc. By this I mean they share their screen. I've been looking on the internet for answers and I have found multiple hits for connecting from PC to Mac but not the other way around. In addition, from what I have read, nothing was vert step-by-step. I heard about TightVNC so I told my friend to download it and that I would be able to remote connect to them using what I have in Leopard. However, it's at this point that I am completely clueless on how to actually establish that connection.
I would like to know what the PC user needs to do and secondly what I would need to know/type in in order to connect to their pc and control their screen.
    Thanks

When it says "computer:________" Connect. I put in the PC's ip address (I'm pretty sure it's the right one, I will ask again if not).
Do they have a home router between their ISP connection and their PC? If so, their router needs to forward port 3389 from the Internet to their PC. And the IP address you need is the IP address assigned to the router by the ISP. They could access a web site such as <http://whatismyip.com> to find out their public IP address.
    1. Who's user name and Password? The PC User's or My account name and my password? If theirs, they don't have a name or password, they turn on the computer and the desktop is there, without having to log in. Do they need to have one (an account or w/e).
The PC's Username and Password. And yes they do have a username and password. They may not remember what they setup, since they have it set to auto login. I do NOT know how to find out this information, as I am a Mac and/or Unix kind of guy
    2. Domain. This is optional is it not? Can the IP go in here?
This is the Windows account domain, and nothing to do with IP addresses nor DNS. Mostly they have WORKGROUP or MSHOME as their domain. If it is optional, then ignore it.
Here are some alternative approaches. Sign-up for a free LogMeIn.com account <http://logmein.com>. Have them install the LogMeIn.com server and associate it with the LogMeIn.com account you created. Now you can use your web browser (Safari) to login to the LogMeIn.com account, and from there connect to their PC's LogMeIn.com server.
The current version of Skype allows screen sharing, however, I think it is a view ONLY connection. That is to say, you can watch their screen, but you can not control their keyboard, nor their mouse. <http://skype.com>
Another choice might be a purchased copy of GoToMyPC (there are both Mac and PC versions).
There is also TimBukTu from <http://www.netopia.com> which is also cross platform.
VNC has also been mentioned. Again, VNC needs router port forwarding, only VNC needs port 5900 forwarded. TightVNC, UltraVNC, RealVNC are possible Window's VNC servers. JollysFastVNC (highly recommended), Chicken of the VNC, or Mac OS X built-in Screen Sharing (Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server -> vnc://ip.addr.of.pc). I only recommend the built-in Mac OS X Screen Shring if the other system is on the same high speed network, or if connecting to another Mac OS X system.

  • Vnc = cpu 100%

using vnc in mac, and if your vnc windows is keep repainting, even that windows is not the current screen, the cpu will still 100%

This is very indicitive of a virus. Either that or you are riunning multiple high graphic programs at once or you dont have enough RAM for your needs. My bet is on the virus though.

  • Login to a Mac thru a server

I want to login to my Mac thru my home server is there software to do this?

Depending on what OS your server is running will depend on the software you use.  But just about any VNC software will let you bring up your Mac's Desktop from another computer.
You can read more about it here: http://www.wikihow.com/Set-Up-VNC-on-Mac-OS-X

  • Remote access using ssh/vnc

    Hi All!
Recently, I have managed to configure my Airport Base station to accept SSH using the port mapping/forwarding feature...
The main goal is to remotely access my mac in the office using SSH and VNC.
I was able to do this however remote Mac is using a high resolution which makes it slow to manage.[really slow].
I am currently using a Windows SSH tool called Putty.. and Real VNC to manage remote mac.
I tried to change the setting of Real VNC to a lower resolution but it would not work..accessing the remote mac will only work if my Windows VNC is set to use the
    "Full" colour level.
Is this a windows issue? I haven't tried using a VNC for Mac though..
any other tool that is available out there aside from Apple Remote desktop?
    Thanks, All!!!!
    DP

so the system server VNC refers to the MAC os x VNC...
No, Vine Server's System Server is Vine Server starting up at boot time and is always running. Vine Server existed before Mac OS X included its own VNC server, so Vine Server's terminology is a bit confusing, but it wasn't when the started using it (it even sounds confusing when I just said it ).
the Vine server itself is the stand alone vnc.
Yes. The Vine Server is a totally separate VNC server implementation. It may be run interactively, or it may be configured to start at system boot time so it is always running (this is the system server mode of Vine Server).
so , OS X's VNC is set to only accept high res..
I do not know if it can ONLY do the resolution of the display, but anytime I've tried to use a VNC client configured for lower resolution, the Mac OS X VNC server has not behaved well. Rather than fight it, I just resort to Vine Server. It has been a rock solid VNC server.
so connecting to the Vine server should be at any port not the 5900as this is the mac os vnc default port.
If you MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE that the Mac OS X VNC server is NOT running, you can use port 5900 for Vine Server, but I find it is safer to just give the Vine Server its own port, and commonly that is port 5901, but the Vine Server can be configured to use any port you desire.
Since I do not use a VNC client on Windows, I can not recommend any clients. However, I have heard of the following:
    RealVNC
    TightVNC
    UltraVNC
I am sure there are others, but not being plugged into Windows culture, my depth of knowledge is very limited.

  • Best Remote Control App

I've read countless reviews on most of the iPad remotes for Mac, but remain hesitant to spend 30 bucks before I know more.
I'm not looking to access my iMac from outside my home, just through my Airport N Wireless network. Basically I need to turn my iPad into a visual touchscreen remote control.
"iTeleport" sounds good, but some users complain there's no RDP support... would that matter to someone who's exclusively using Mac OS?
"Desktop Connect" also sounds good with its touch screen control feature, but same issue with some users complaining it's too slow. Not sure if that's because they are connecting to a Windows machine vs a Mac? Or they're connecting over the internet rather than their home network?
Anyone tried any of these apps? Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi, i have also mocha vnc butmy mac wont respond wheni trie to login?
    Could you help me?

  • Flash player pages won't work?

Is there a work around for adobe flash player? I can't use certain sites like farmville that require flash player and I am wondering if there is a solution app or download?

Actually, there is a workaround, but it ain't pretty, and it won't be native to the iPad. It will require a computer that you have access to (Mac or Windows). You can download a remote desktop app (RDP app for Windows, VNC for Mac) and use that to connect to your computer to play Flash games.
Outside of that, no, there is no other way.

  • Help with connection Question

    Is this possible?
I have a imac at work and an imac at home , I am going to be working from home for a while, is it possible I can "connect" to my work computer from home ?
My work computer is DSL through a Netgear Router and Home is DSL/Cable on Airport.

    Yes.
    MobileMe's Back-To-My-Mac is one option.
You could install the iChat add-on Chax and configure the new iChat -> preferences -> Chax tab to allow the specified iChat buddy to start screen sharing remotely. Search for Chax at VersionTracker.com
You could use something like LogMeIn.com (there are other similar services).
You can setup Port Forwarding on your router for VNC (port 5900) and attach to your Mac using Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server -> vnc://remote.mac.address.
You can setup Port Forwarding on your router for SSH (port 22) and use ssh to tunnel into your Mac
    ssh -L 5901:localhost:5900 [email protected]
    vnc://localhost:5901
and ssh also supports sftp and scp file copies.
If using port forwarding, you can get a free dynamic DNS name from No-IP.com or DynDNS.org
Oops! I just saw you are using Tiger. That mostly leaves you with LogMeIn.com (or similar service), or SSH tunneling and the use of JollysFastVNC or Chicken of the VNC clients. You could also use the Vine Server VNC server on the remote Mac if you did not like the built-in Mac OS X VNC server.
