VNC/Remote Management display size setting?

I'm not sure the best place to ask this question, it has several different components involved in it. I've looked all over but can't seem to find any info on this.
I've got a headless Mini running 10.5.1. When I use a VNC client or now "Share Screen" to it, it comes up with a screen size of 1680 x 1050. Back when it was running Tiger it was something smaller (but can't remember what it was right now).
Question is... how is this size set and is it changeable?
Thanks,
Rich

Sorry, I guess I should have been more specific, how do you set it to other display sizes besides the ones that are listed in Sys Prefs? What if I want to make it bigger than 1860 x1050 (which is the biggest listed)? I'm connecting from a Mac that has a 30" display, so what if I want to make it closer to that display's size, which is 2560 x 1600? How was 1680 x 1050 even picked in the first place? I do not have a monitor attached at all, let alone that size.

  • Command line enable of VNC/Remote Management?

I have a situation where I need to enable remove mgmt (VNC) on my Mac at work, so I can get to it over VPN at home, to access my Parallels, etc. I can ssh to the system, but can't figure out how to enable the Remote Desktop (and it's specific parameters) via the command line. I believe it would be a defaults write.
Can someone point me in the right direction? I just want to restrict VNC with a Password, then disable it when I'm done.
    Thanks.

    Hi
Difficult to see why you're hesitating to use the kickstart utility as that will do what you originally asked. Just because it does not specifically mention VNC does not mean VNC is not running or working.
VNC Server and Client is built into OSX since 10.5. If you enable Remote Management it will open ports 5900 and 3283 on that workstation. Port 5900 is the VNC Port and port 3283 is the special control port Apple add to the built in VNC/ARD Agent to allow their dedicated management VNC Server application - Apple Remote Desktop - to offer a lot more than simple control for remote clients. You don't have to buy ARD to do what you want.
Enabling Screen Sharing only opens port 5900. On a Mac all you need is the local admin's name and password of the client workstation you're trying to control. If you're trying to control a mac from a PC then you'd need a dedicated VNC Viewer installing on the PC. Something like RealVNC Viewer. To allow the PC to control the mac you would have to add a VNC password option which should not be the same as the local admin's password.

But, the Region is only showed a small fraction area on the parent jsf page whenever during design or run time.
How to set display size of a Region or Dynamic Region?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
the decorative box is supposed to stretch components in the center facet, so at runtime the region should stretch. Can you try with a static region to see if this is an issue with dynamic regions?

  • How to set a uniform display size of multiple intermedia image types - wher

I have read "If you want to limit the size of the file that can be uploaded, you can do this as a post generation
step, by adding the maxFileSize property to the <controller> element in the struts-config:
This does not address how to limit the *** display size *** where you have multiple intermedia image types - where the original size is not uniform.
If an image is uploaded where the true image display size is 1024 x 768 - it will display that way in the table/table-form. This will create un-even display size's where previous images sizes where different 384 x 384 and so on.
Is there a way to encode the display size so that *** ALL *** images regardless of their true size are displayed uniformly at least on one dimension (64 x ???)? This is possible when using products such as Dreamweaver or Flash.
BTW - JHS/***JDev*** synergy is truely magnificient!!! Way-To-Go Oracle!!!!!!!!!!! Keep it up!!!!
    BG...

    Bill,
I did some tests, and was able to reproduce it. The problem is that JHeadstart distinguishes between display types fileDownload and image, but UIX uses the same <media> tag to handle both display types. It will look at runtime whether it must render a hyperlink to download the document, or to render it right away as an image.
To get all images the same size, you can set the display width and height, AND the display type must be set to image.
However, to get the file name used as download link, you must set the FileName attribute AND the display type must be set to "fileDownload" ..
So, to solve your problem, it is easiest to set the displayType to "fileDownload" and set the width and height properties post-generation in the generated UIX page.
In the next release of Jheadstart, we will fix this, and always pick up width, height and fileName settings regardless of the display type.
Note that you should also set the FileName property against the attribute you are using to upload the file.

  • Difference between remote management and vnc

Difference between remote management and vnc

By VNC I will presume you mean 'Screen Sharing'.
Screen Sharing in System Preferences - Sharing is purely for remote control and is based on the VNC protocol with a few extra features added by Apple.
Remote Management in System Preferences does everything Screen Sharing does and is fully compatible with another Mac doing just Screen Sharing, i.e. it allows remote control. However it can also do additional things. It is intended for use with Apple's Remote Desktop Administration software which can use this to send files to a Mac, send (Unix) commands to a Mac and ask for a report from the Mac (e.g. how much RAM it has).
If you don't have Apple Remote Desktop there is no real point enabling Remote Management instead of Screen Sharing.
Both Screen Sharing and Remote Management can also be configured to allow 100% standard VNC connectivity from say a PC, as standard they only accept connections from Macs.

  • Setting Display Size in X

    Connecting a laptop to a new 42" Panasonic monitor (TC-L42E60), I found
    the display to be blurry.
    xrandr shows this line:
    HDMI2 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 698mm x 392mm
Use the same hardware, on my co-worker's older 42" monitor, I see:
    HDMI2 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 930mm x 520mm
    A physical size of 698mm x 392mm is closer to 32".  I assume there is a
problem with the monitor's EDID (the monitor's firmware is up to date).
Does anyone know how to manually set the physical size?  I fiddled
around with 'xrandr --fbmm' but to no avail.

Before making changes, I see these two lines in the output of xrandr:
    LVDS1 connected 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 277mm x 156mm
    HDMI2 connected 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 698mm x 392mm
    And this information from Xorg.log:
    $ grep monitor /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    [225833.747] (**) | |-->Monitor "<default monitor>"
[225833.747] (==) No monitor specified for screen "Default Screen Section".
    Using a default monitor configuration.

    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "<default monitor>"
    DisplaySize 930 520 # In millimeters

I now see this in Xorg.log:
    $ grep monitor /var/log/Xorg.0.log

    [226024.699] (II) intel(0): Monitor name: Panasonic-TV
But in the output of xrandr, I see no change to the display size:
    LVDS1 connected 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 277mm x 156mm
    HDMI2 connected 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 698mm x 392mm
I understand my laptop screen is LVDS1 but I was hoping to see have a
    display size of 930mm x 520mm.
    1) Does anyone know how to define HDMI2 in
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-monitor.conf ?
    2) Does anyone know how to override the DisplaySize?
Maybe if I get '1' to work, '2' will follow, but I figured I'd ask.

  • Remote Management doesn't assign IP address, it displays (NULL)

    Hi,
I hope some gurus can shed some light into this issue I'm having with Remote Management.
I have managed to remote access into my MB Pro once (using port forwarding) but after I put it into sleep mode I haven't been able to gain access since.  When I go to System Preferences > Sharing > Remote Management my mac (or router) doesn't assign an IP address.  It displays is the following:
Other users can manage your computer using the address (null).
Where the text says (null) I expected to see an IP address and I'm 99% sure the one time that Remote Access was working an IP address was assigned.
I can still access the Internet successfully, and I am running Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  I've searched around the web and am at a dead end with a resolution.  I've checked and rechecked my MBP's settings, I've also rebooted the wireless router but can't gain access.
What have I missed, or what am I doing wrong?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Jeff.

I'm also interested to find out how you fixed this
    regards

  • Remote Management and Windows VNC clients

    Hey guys,
I recently had a go at getting the built-in VNC server in Leopard (as part of remote management) up and running.
Remote control works flawlessly from other Macs, but it refuses connections to Windows clients most of the time (throws up errors like 'Error waiting for server message' or something).
Any ideas? I thought it might have something to do with the Windows client not understanding the encryption, but haven't found any way to change security settings.
    Thanks in advance!

Have you giving the server a VNC password?
System Preferences -> Sharing -> Remote Management -> Computer Settings -> VNC viewers may control screen with password: xxxxxxx
What VNC client are you using on Windows. Not all VNC clients are created equal? I know about TightVNC (which has been reported to work), RealVNC, and UltraVNC are 3 that I've heard about.
You can also install your own VNC server (in parallel using a different port or instead of the Mac OS X VNC). Vine Server (aka OSXvnc) has been used successfully for years. After all not all VNC servers are created equal either

  • I accidentally set a remote mac to "remote management" while screen sharing. Can I remotely reset it to screen sharing?

I accidentally set a remote mac to "remote management" while screen sharing. I did not realize that this set it to require the commercial Apple Remote Desktop application to get to it. Can I remotely reset it to screen sharing? It has disconnected me from accessing it using iCloud.

Good question, and I am not sure. I believe the remote login WAS checked, so if that is needed, I think that is a available, unless checking Remote Management unchecked Login.
I am not computer illiterate, but I am not a professional IT guy. I read about more subjects than I know. Back to My Mac should still be set up in iCloud and I have seen some discussion of using ssh with that, and I am gathering that you are talking about ssh when you talk of remote shell access?
    Thanks.

  • Setting up Remote Management for external users

    Hi All,
We currently have a zenworks 10.3 environment set up and all appears to be working well on the LAN with regards to being able to remote control machines etc. We are now looking to expand the remote control to enable support staff to remote control machines outside of our LAN.
From what I understand so far through reading the zenworks documentation, is that we would need some kind of proxy server setup in the DMZ that will listen for requests from the client device and forward these on to the agent. There will inevitably need to be firewall changes etc etc... but i guess my question is to you guys who I expect have set some this up in your own environments, is how have you guys gone about achieving this? Its evident that there may be more than one way to achieve this, but would be useful to know the correct way of doing this?
I know the question is a little vague, but this is the first time we’ve looked into the remote management externally - and this is where all the knowledge is :)
    Thanks

  • ZLM remote management

Pardon the dumb question here, but why can't the remote management (which appears to use the built-in VNC server in SLES 10?) just "use" the root user/password without having to muck around with the password command?
We normally enable "remote administration" on all our SLES 10 servers for "regular" VNC access. Obviously we can login as the root user.
But it seems ZLM has its own criteria? Would seem a bit odd (to me) to not allow root to be able to remote control a machine via ZLM without having to muck around with the password command (and then you have to remember to change it on every server if you ever change your root password).
Or am I missing something here?

To enable the Remote Control for the root user under ZLM/ZEN11 , you need to Allow remote access of the user root to your display manager . It can be done by either editing the file /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and setting DISPLAYMANAGER_ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE="yes" if defined as "no" , and then restart X (/etc/init.d/xdm restart or using init 3/init 5) .
The display manager setting can be also modified in YaST using yast2 sysconfig -> Desktop -> Display Manager.
    Thanks
