VOB files question

Hi all,
I shot a project on 35mm for a cinematography class. The lab put the telecine onto a dvd. I want to pull the files into Adobe CS3 so i can edit it however it does not seem to want to do it. I am very new to the program. in fact this will be my first project using the program. anyway, can someone help me out on this? Do i need to convert the VOB to another format? I have tried converting to avi but CS3 does not recognize it either.

The lab must have an original of the source on something other than the DVD (because you can not record from a telecine direct to DVD)
Ask if this is the case and then get a dubb onto something you and Premiere can work with.

  • Creating an ISO file from a bunch of BUP, IFO, VOB files

    Hi
First, i want to apologize to all of you if my question is already answered somewhere, i did a search before.
I have a bunch of BUP, IFO, VOB files (from an entire DVD) that i would like to burn into a single .ISO file.
I am looking for the best software to do this. I would have used ImgBurn on my PC i guess... But with my iMac?
Thanks a lot for your much appreciated help!

Yes, the question has been answered before, several times.
The only difference is that you want to create an ISO image, which usually means a raw disk image from another OS (eg, Win or Linux), although Mac OS X can attach or burn such an image.
If you want to create a DVD-Video disc image, then you must use a tool specifically designed for it, if you want to use the image to create DVDs which will play in stand-alone DVD players. That's because such DVDs require a rigid disc layout.
If you want to go commercial, you can use Toast or NTI DragonBurn. Otherwise, Burn, suggested by Alberto Ravasiomay also be a good solution (I'm not sure if it can save disc images, rather than burn them). Other solutions are
    DVD Image Utility
    <http://geek.thinkunique.org/2007/07/17/dvd-image-utility/>
or, if you can handle the command line,
    mkisofs
    <http://cdrecord.berlios.de/private/cdrecord.html>
    (part of the cdrtools kit)
You can also have a look at
    Disco
    <http://discoapp.com/>
    LiquidCD
    <http://www.maconnect.ch/>
Both can burn DVD-Video; I'm not sure if they can save as a disc image.

DU (or hdiutil) can create an ISO image, and, if it's used to burn to DVD, the disc can be played on computer DVD drives. But it will not play on most stand-alone DVD players, because of the layout issue I mentioned above. Hence, it's not a good idea to use it to create a DVD-Video disc image.

  • Premiere CS6 skips/does not play first second of vob file - while with vlc all fine

    Hello everyone!
I am trying to edit vob files (after being ripped on hdd) and Premiere seems to skip the the first second in the media browser, source monitor etc. after import. When opened with vlc-player the vob file is just fine and the first (missing) second (part of a sentence) is there. So I tried to convert the vob file to an avi file with Adobe Media Encoder. Same thing the first second is missing in the avi file. Adobe Bridge - same thing. Same problem with other vob files.
What can I do? Thank you very much for your kind help!
    Best, Michael
System: Windows 7 (64) all updated. Master Collection CS6 all updated (Premiere Pro CS6 - 6.0.1 etc.)

    Michael,
Is both the Audio and the Video missing from the VOB in PrPro?
Is the Audio DD 5.1 SS in AC3?
Though certainly not YOUR case, if your Audio is DD 5.1, then it is recommended to allow ~ 2.0 sec. of silence at the beginning of the Audio Stream, to allow the equipment to "lock onto" the signal. This most often happens with higher-end DVD/BD players - you are getting similar in PrPro, and not a high-end DVD/BD player.
If you rip the DVD in Audition, or similar, does the entire Audio Stream show up, like it does in VLC player?
One last question, regards your internal HDD, from which you are editing. Is it at least 7,200 RPM, or is it a 5,400 RPM drive?
Good luck, and as should be obvious, I am just thinking out loud here.

  • How to turn VOB files into DVD Movie

I came across a computer that had something like a "DVD MOVIE" file.
It was basically vob files packaged inside a "DVD MOVIE" so when you clicked on it, it would
play like a dvd movie.  I have extracted some VOB files from a DVD disc to have
a "VIDEO_TS" folder containing the movie, but of course I can only play the VOB files
in a program like VLC...my question is - What do i need to do to put these vob files into
this "DVD FILE" folder or whatever so i can just click on it and it play a normal dvd?
It may have said "Movie file".......thanks.

I use Roxio Toast which converts and burns the VIDEO_TS folder with the VOB files into a playable DVD. It does not come cheaply but is well worth the money. There are also a lot of converters around that will shrink and convert your VOB files to .avi or .mp4 or whatever you prefer. Just do a google search or go to the App Store. MPEGStreamclip is a free program that is an excellent converter.

  • Different Audio Tracks when you import DVD VOB Files

I imported some vob files from a dvd and it only gives me the first audio track in premiere but i need the 2nd audio track. How do i tell premiere i only want the 2nd track?

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

If there is no way to get the 2nd audio track then i would consider that to be a bug that hopefully Adobe can fix in next patch.
Ideally when you import a vob fileset premiere should automatically drop all the audio tracks into the timeline, not just the first one.
Don't use a DVD, plain and simple. The fact that we can edit this stuff at all is just a handy shortcut that works most of the time. I suspect that, given the nature of the material and the far greater precedence for native editing of professional camera sources, this is about as good as its going to get. You can certainly report it as a bug (which its not) or request it as a feature, but I sincerely doubt that this would be given a great deal of priority.
I'm not saying this just to be a jerky naysayer: the fact is that there is limited time and resources that go into development of each point release and each full version, and the things that benefit the most people have the greater likelihood of being fixed or included. I'd be surprised if even 1% of Premiere users needed this functionality. Believe me--I've wanted dozens of things that I know won't ever make it into the program, simply because they won't benefit many people. But make a feature request and see what happens...
wow??  what a terrible, mean, and unnecessary negative response?  "jerky naysayer" ??  never heard that term, but it sounds accurate.
Thats like walking up to someone and saying "i dont mean to be cruel, but your fat and ugly"
anyways, not sure what your point is, other than you have a crystal ball that tells you less than 1% of the premiere users in the world ever need to grab a b-roll from a dvd and i think i could find plenty of people who would disagree with you. I have been doing digital video editing for 20 years and been using premiere for about 15 years now i think since it first came out. I work at a tv station with lots of other video editors and we have all needed to pull a clips off dvd's many times in our lives. Im sorry that i dont have an XDCAM HD video tape of the first moon launch to capture, so for now i have to grab a clip from a dvd.
Thanks for your attempted "help" but i'd rather you not hiijack my thread by negating my questions and requests. My company has purchased probably over a million dollars in adobe software licenses over the years and there is nothing wrong with my opinions and requests.
    thanks

  • How to burn VOB files onto a DVD?

Hello everyone, I've seen this question asked in other forum postings, but I can't seem to find the specific answer I'm looking for. Basically, I have several VOB files that I want to burn onto a DVD that I can play in a regular DVD player. Can anyone please recommend any applications that would be good to do this? I appreciate any help and support I can get, thanks!

If have the complete set of VOB files for a DVD, put them in a folder named "VIDEO_TS" and use DVD Imager

to make a .dmg file that can be burned to a DVD.

  • I am trying to edit VOB files and Photoshop cs6 ext. won't accept them.

I am trying to edit some VOB files from my daughter's wedding CD.  But Photoshop won't accept that format.  I read that I could just change the extension to AVI  and drag them in.  I did that and it opened  them but the video and audio didn't sync.  The size was distorted but I figured out that I could change the aspect ratio to widescreen from the view menu which looks pretty normal.  But I see black lines on the sides of the video.   What do I have to do to be able to edit the video??
    Thanks

VOBs are multiplexed MPEG-2 DVD files and they adhere therefore to the DVD spec - 720x576 pixels, 1.43 pixel aspect ratio. Anyway, you are wasting your time. The files will need to be converted in an external tool to be usable in PS and even then the question is how much sense it makes to edit video in Photoshop, especialyl when it contains audio. Premiere or other edit programs would be much more adequate.

  • How to get edited VOB files into iDVD?

    Hello all,
This is actually a bunch of questions, not all of which are related to iDVD, but I didn't really know where else to post this. I have just ripped a DVD with MacTheRipper and have a bunch of VOB files in a VIDEO_TS folder that I would like to edit slightly and burn back to a DVD without any loss of quality if possible. I have that MPEG-2 component thingy, and I can open the VOB files in MPEG Streamclip, and even trim the movie and save as a new VOB, all within Streamclip.
    1. First of all, is this newly created VOB compatible with iDVD, or do I need to export it to some other format?
    2. If it's not compatible, which other format is best, and is there a way to convert it without loss of quality?
    3. If no loss of quality is possible, what settings would get me minimum loss of quality?
    4. If all else fails, is the newly created VOB compatible with any other DVD burning software, and what is the best one in your opinion?
Sorry for all the questions. I've learned from reading so many forums that one must be very specific indeed to get any kind of good advice. Thank you all in advance!

If your first paragraph is correct, then replacing the old VOB files with the new (edited) ones in the TS-folder will do the trick, if you have Toast. Just drag that TS folder to the Toast window and burn - job done.
If you don't you will have to go the long way: use MPEG Streamclip to convert the VOB files to DV and import into iMovie, then edit and send to iDVD.
    Loss of quality? Possibly.

  • VOB file and Imovie

I am a novice..I have a DVD with VOB files and would LOVE to get it into Imovie.
I have DVD Ripper and it is now showing up as an mp4 file in my final cut software.
How do I get it into Imovie.
    Thanks.

Use MPEG Streamclip or DVDxDV to convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format. Here's a tutorial on MPEG Streamclip: http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739

  • Importing VOB files into PP CS3

I have looked at numerous forum notes on this problem with PP and I've about come to the conclusion that the easiest thing might be to just buy a copy of Premiere Elements. I understand Premiere Elements will import VOBs and convert them to AVI. Some of the other solutions require several pieces of software, multiple steps, etc sometimes with limited successs.
My most recent attempt (just renaming the VOB file to MPG) resulted in good quality video with no audio. Is the primary reason for loss of audio the AC3 Dolby? Will copying the ad2mcac3dec.dll file from the Encore CS3 directory to the PP CS3 root directory really solve that problem? Is that it? That would be nice but somehow I'm a little skeptical. Are there other reasons for losing the audio when you just rename the VOB file to MPG?

  • Extracting VOB files

I'm not sure if this is the best place for this question, but here goes.
I am trying to extract files from an ultrasound DVD-RW and it does not agree with the Apple DVD player at all. It continuously errors out saying "Skipping Over Damaged Area". I have tried FFMPEG and Handshake, but they will not convert the VOB files, perhaps because it is a DVD-RW.
Typically I use SnapZ to record the screen but it rarely works without errors. Any one have any suggestions?

MPEG Streamclip will do what you want: http://www.squared5.com
Can't say how much luck you will have with the "damaged area" part though.

  • Importing vob files into dvd studio pro 4

    hi
    any help please ?
i have a project ,where i have a dvd already made and i now need to ad extra features to it,
with the original dvd i have only the video ts folder to go with.
i cant inport the vob files ,i changed the extensions to mpeg,mpg,mv2
all were not able to be imported, tried idvd no luck.
seeing that the vob files are mpeg2 i would expect that dont need to be converted ,but is it something to do with the audio files needing to be separated?
    cheers
i find this forum wonderfully useful

The files do need to be demuxed/reconverted into a usable format.
There's a free program people tout all the time when people ask this question: MPEG Streamclip.
I use Cinematize as I feel it has more 'finessing' options: http://www.miraizon.com/products/products.html

  • Splitting a VOB file

howdie all, i have a question , i have a big VOB file and it doesnt fit on a regular DVD disc, how can i split the VOB file into 2 parts? i dont care if the program is free or shareware ill pay for the program if needed. so please tell me how do i split a VOB file into 2 parts.
    Thanks alot

You could use something like MPEG Streamclip, which would take your VOB file and convert it to DV; you could then use QuickTime pro or any video editing software to split the DV movie file in half, and then burn separate disks.
You would lose a bit a of quality this way, though, since you would be recompressing.
MPEG Streamclip is free and can be found at [http://www.squared5.com>.

  • Log and Transfer .VOB Files and NO audio??

I am trying to edit some footage that I did not shoot... The client gave me .vob files. I am able to look at them in FC, but there is no audio attached. The files do play with audio on Windows Media Player. There are also extensions for .iub and .bup on the flash stick... However I cannot detect a specific audio file.
Also there is a timecode over all the video...
    My questions are:
    1. How can I link the video and audio? I can't even find an audio file...
    2. How do I remove the timecode
    3. Would it just be easier to attain the raw footage?

You'd have to blow up the image...make it larger...until you didn't see the TC. And that will REALLY degrade your image. I mean, going beyond 20% is bad. And this is already a highly compressed format that you are going to convert to another highly compressed format. Won't be pretty.
They contracted a company...paid them...and didn't get the masters? or they got TC dubs and didn't pay?
