.VOB files to iMovie?

I recently unearthed my husband's over 40 year old super 8 movies and had them converted to digital format at Costco. The files are in .vob format. I've tried importing them into iMovie but nothing happens when I drag them into the new project area. An Apple store person suggested that they needed to be converted to Quicktime first and that Popcorn was the product to use. I don't see anything in the Popcorn menus that indicates that it converts video files into Quicktime and am at a loss on how to proceed next. My intention was to provide my kids with early videos of their Dad (died in 1990) for Christmas. Sugesstions?

Hia there!
I believe I can help you there? Me did the same a few yeares back and had movies delivered on dvd,You need to change these .vob files to DV so you can edit them in imovie.
And you need these tools:
http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Apple intermediate codec:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/AppleIntermediate_Codec_1-0-1&locale=noNO
(needed to make mpeg str work)
And mac the ripper (Free works with all non protected dvds):
http://www.mactheripper.org/
Rip your DVD you get a viretual dvd on your desktop,Open the TS folder and select the .vob files all of them ⌘⏎ drag them to mpeg streamclip window DO NOT open as a dvd select file export to dv..
With this done you open new project in iMovie 6( recomended) and edit to your harts desire .
Have fun!

how can I import vob files into imovie 09? i have some home movies on dvd that i want to edit.

You might want to look at this one too.  Very easy to use and it doesn't require the Apple MPEG-2 playback component.

  • Import vob file to imovie no tone

I managed to import a .vob file from a disk to imovie, with the import/file function in imovie.  But there is no tone with the film.  When I check the vob file with MPEGstremclip of Quicktime , there is a tone.
Any help how to import the vob file with tone?

Use MPEG Streamclip for this, and you will have sound.
See detailed instructions at this link.

  • VOB file and Imovie

I am a novice..I have a DVD with VOB files and would LOVE to get it into Imovie.
I have DVD Ripper and it is now showing up as an mp4 file in my final cut software.
How do I get it into Imovie.
    Thanks.

Use MPEG Streamclip or DVDxDV to convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format. Here's a tutorial on MPEG Streamclip: http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739

  • How to a open a .VOB file in iMovies?

    Hi,
How do I get a movie into iMovie? I have a movie that is made as a .VOB and i do not know how to get it into iMovie to edit it.
    Any advice appreciated.
    H

ok thanks, I have tried that... but not found anything fitting.
I was more expecting an answer saying that i cant import a .VOB file and that i have to convert it first. Which i have tried but none of the software that i have downloaded have helped i got the ideas from other posts. But with no luck yet. Could be because i do not have the paid version of Quick Time (only the free version) that i seam to need to be able to use MPEG StreamClip I also tried another software called Flv Crunch but that one did not work at all and did not explain what was wrong.
So thankful for any suggestions to what i can do.

  • Importing VTS.VOB files to imovie via MPEG Streamclip 1.7

About a year ago, I converted all of my home movies from the past 20 years to DVD via an external DVD Burner attached directly to my camera/VHS.
I recently converted to a Mac from a PC (And have never been happier ) and discovered imovie. I have been converting my DVD's into imovie with MPEG Streamclip 1.7 with no problem until I started trying to import more recent movies (i.e. movies I put on DVD directly from the camera as opposed to from a VHS).
Both types of files are VTS.VOB files but the ones imported from a camera are "unsupported file types". Does anyone know why this is and/or how to fix it? Thanks!

No, I have never used ffmpegX for this, but if you need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Import .VOB files into iMovie?

I have copied footage from my camera (don't have that tapes anymore!) to a DVD. Now I want to import the files into iMovie to edit and so but iMovie doesn't recognize the file-formats on my DVD: .VOB
Can anyone tell me how I can convert these files so I can import them?
    Thank you very much...

Ok I was right, the stretching is coming from importing it directly into imovies folder. Unfortunately when I drag the dv file into imovies the quality was not as good as HB.
Now trying the crop method directly into imovies to see if that fixes the stretching as the picture quality seemed much better, if that don't work I'll save it to my desktop using HB at 100% quality as that seems to be the best and then drag it into imovies quality.
How, if it was you, would you convert the files back to mpeg2? Is there a free converter as I don't have QT pro? Will SC do it in good quality?
I also thought (hate to use the pc word) but I may store the file in my external hard drive as a quicktime or divx or another format (what will give me the best quality from the other formats) and then do the conversion to mpeg2. Then use something like dvdshrink to make the file dvd size
Gees what a bummer man! Just as well I have 2 weeks off work. Not quite the way I was hoping to spend it though!

  • How do I import a .vob file into iMovie?

I friend sent me on a CD a video she took with a Sony camcorder, but I cannot import it into iMovie.  I've found several forms of software to convert the Sony file into a format iMovie will recognize, but which is the best one?  Is there a free option?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :

    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Importing VOB files into iMovie

I'm running 10.9.5 an iMovie 10.0.5. I have a DVD of video that I created and I want to bring it into iMovie. I've tried a couple of recommended solutions, i.e. Steamclip and MacX Quicktime Converter, but I get a message saying they can't be used because the developer hasn't been approved...or something of that nature. • How can I convert a home movie on dvd(vob file) to edit on imovie?

I had home movies converted to a dvd- the files are vob. Now I want to edit the movies in imovie.
I am having a difficult time converting from vob straight to mov files.
I purchased Quick Time Pro thinking that could do it, but I haven't been able to.
Also, it just says QuickTime Player Version 7.6.4 (518.35) on my computer.
Is it supposed to say QuickTIme Pro?
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

The "Pro" option just unlocks a lot of features in QuickTime Player. If you look at the registration info, it will show if you have Pro installed.
For converting DVD's you have two options; hardware or software.
The hardware option involves connecting a DVD player's analog outputs to a qualified "DV device" (DV camcorder, VTR or converter) then connecting the DV device's Firewire port to your Mac to capture the footage.
The software option involves using an application like DVDxDV or MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format that works natively with your chosen NLE.

  • Converting VOB movie files for iMovie 09

I would like to import movie files into iMovie 09 which are in the VOB format. How do I convert the files to a format for iMovie 09?

I purchased this Mac two days ago. For a work application I purchased this camera 1 week ago. When I bought the camera I asked the vendor if software came with the camera that would allow me to load the videos onto the computer but when I received the camera no software was included and no one from Canon or the camera vendor would help. I had a Canon DC 330 that came with the software last year but someone from my company made off with it. Another story another day.
I've used PC's for years but I've been wanting to try a Mac anyway so I went into the Apple store with a VOB file that the PC would not read. It took a little fussing but the tech loaded the VOB file directly from the 3" DVD (took a few minutes to find a machine that read the DVD) into iMovie. Worked real slick so I walked out with a new Mac. I knew there would be a significant learning curve but nothing ventured nothing gained.
The Apple Store is over an hours drive one way but I suppose I'll have to go back and see if I can figure this out. Not an issue, just time consuming.
Anyway suggestions would be most appreciated. I will try the tip found on this post but any steps I can save would be great.
