Vob to FCP

I am trying to extract from my archived DVD projects, certain vob files to incorporate into a highlight reel.
I have OSEX and it extracted the vob file from dvd to desktop.
I then tried using DiVA but it only seems to encode video.
I next tried MPEG Streamclip and it told me I had to have the Quicktime MPEG-2 plugin.
I am using FCP 5.0.4 and was under the impression that I didn't need this plugin!
Also, I had my G5 connected briefly to a network which downloaded all the software updates which then crashed my system and I had to repair with a new system install.
Now, my default for opening QT files is set to QT 7.1.1 but only 7.0.4 is installed. How do I change this?
And how do I find out why my MPEG-2 QT converter isn't being recognized?
My studio is no longer connected online in order to not compromise its integrity once again with updates.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

first off
if you have fcp you should have qt pro.
by having QT pro you have peg2 ability.
I am not acusing you of anything, but that is standard with a legit version.
but at 30 bucks qt pro pays for itself.
at the station i use mpeg stream clip as well.
lemme know whats up

  • Vob to fcp to dvdsp?

    I need a shorter version of a dvd I authored and own the rights to.
    I no longer have the original material.
    Can I import the vob files directly into fcp and trim them there then export to dvdsp?
    Will I lose a lot of detail?
    What about compression?
    The program is silent, so audio is not an issue.
    I'd rather not download any freeware.

    You can't edit VOB files directly and without using 3rd party software, the only way to convert the DVD media is to play the video out from a DVD player through an analog/DV converter then capture it back into FCP.
    So, you go from a MPEG2 compressed version of your original pristine images through a mpeg2 to analog converter (your dvd player) to send it out either s-vhs (better) or composite (worse) to an analog/DV converter then firewire into the machine. Oh, and this has to happen in real time. 30 min of video takes 30 minutes to convert and capture.
    If you are willing to run mpeg streamclip or dvdxdv, you convert the VOB files into editable DV files in one step at faster than realtime.
    good luck.

  • Converting VOB Files For use in FCP

    Hello,
    I have a large FCP project using VOB files shot on a DVD Recorder.
    I have been been using a freeware called MPEG Streamclip to convert them into Quicktime Files for use with FCP7. The resulting QT files have all been very choppy when used in the FCP Timeline etc.
    I have options with this freeware to convert to MPEG, TS or export to Quicktime, DV, AVI, MPEG4 or other formats.
    Any suggestions on how to bring these VOB files into Final Cut Pro so that they work well.
    Thanks,
    Marc

    Nick's tutorial is good. Read it.
    I had been using Cinematize for this but would always have trouble with the aspect ratio.
    With MPEG Streamclip I have no problems if I do it this way:
    Export to QuickTime
    Change Compression to: Apple DV/DVCPro-NTSC
    Quality: 100%
    Frame Size: 720x480 (DV-NTSC)
    Sound: Uncompressed (the default)
    Make Movie
    I do a preset of the above.
    Now, when you take that resultant file into FCP:
    In FCP make sure your sequence set-up is DV anamorphic (if footage is anamorphic/16:9). When you bring that file into FCP it will not be flagged as anamorphic. In the browser scroll over and check mark it as anamorphic. NOW drag into the timeline. Aspect ratio is good if you do it this way.

  • Convert vob files for use in FCP X

    I need to convert VOB files for use in FCP X on my macbookpro in OS X Lion (10.7.5) I use Clipwrap to convert other formats, but it does not seem to accept VOB for conversion (or if it does, I have not figured out how). In searching the web, I've come across several products that tout themselves as the best, fastest, easiest VOB to Prores converters etc., some that advertise as "free" when actually only a watermarked trial version is free. I have no idea of the actual quality of any of these (some examples are Brorsoft video converter for Mac, and Acrok HD Video Converter...), and would like some input from folks w/ experience in these things before dropping $ on the problem.
    In another thread on this site I read something about MPEG Streamclip, & something about needing to separately download an MPG2 converter for it w/ Lion or Mountain Lion - the process sounded confusing and I couldn't tell if it applied to my situation or not...
    Thanks in advance for any light anyone can shed.

    MpegStremclip is THE Swiss Army Knife, when it comes to conversion, a 100% reliable, it IS absolutely free (any download a dollar = Stefano would be a millionaire!), I dare to say it is THE most recommended 3d party tool in the editor community ....
    How & why you need to install the mp2 plug-in does Signore Cinque explain in simple words on his website:

  • Importation of VOB files into FCP

    I have been importing .VOB file into FCP on a Mac Pro 8 core without any problems. Last week I bought a MacBookPro 3.06 Core 2 Duo and I reinstalled the OS and used system migration to import the programs from my Mac Pro.
    The MacBookPro will NOT open import the VOB file into FCP. Apple support said that VOB files are not supported. They suggested the power difference between the two computers allowed import in one and not the other. This does not make sense to me.
    Any thought from the experts?

    I've never known any version of FCP to work with VOB files natively or otherwise. Most people use MPEG Streamclip to convert to the format that will match their FCP Sequence settings.

  • CONVERTING and IMPORTING .VOB files into FCP?

    Hi.
    I made a dvd of an old vhs tape of mine using a Sony consumer vhs-->dvd component.
    Haven't had any trouble in the past using MPEG streamclip to convert .vob files and import into fcp (from dvd's NOT made on this particular machine) --but for some reason, this dvd doesn't seem to contain those files.
    The icon of the dvd appears as a folder on my desktop with a small red circle on it.
    The dvd plays fine on my G5, but the folder appears to be empty when opened.
    I'm stumped.
    Anyone?

    Buy or hire one of these: http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advcprofessionalfamily then you can capture the tape directly into FCP as a QuickTime .mov that uses the DV codec.
    Don't forget to switch the *Device Control* setting in Log & Capture to *Non-Controllable Device* first.

  • DVD .VOB  & .TS Files playback in FCP 7

    I am looking for an efficient way to edit video directly from DVDs..... In the past I have always used Mpeg Stream Clip and it has worked great.
    The other day I dragged a .VOB file directly into FCP and the video played very clean, but there was no audio.
    Is there a way to being .VOB or .TS files directly into FCP.

  • Draging VOB files directly into FCP

    I was always told that FCP could not read VOB files directly. And to get stuff from a dvd into FCP I had to either rip it or capture through an analogue converter. But someone I know tested draging VOB files (or the files where the video is stored on a DVD) into FCP and it worked. I have also tested this, and it worked. These were of course inhouse non copy protected DVDs.
    But my question is, even if this works, is there something that could come back and bite me in the behind, if I do it this way?

    It skips frames, but that's OK for a rough cut.
    Says who? Dropped frames during the edit are unacceptable. There is no reason to edit with H.264...it is a DELIVERY codec. It isn't intended for editing (notice there are no EASY SETUPS for this?)
    Edit in a format that is meant for editing, then compress h.264 for web or HD DVD.

  • Is a .VOB video format compatible with FCP

    I have been sent a DVD with .VOB format which I have imported into FCP, but there is no sound.
    Is this non compatible, or have I done something wrong?

    when you use "open" "video TS" and select a VOB file in your DVD --pick up any one- , the program should ask whether you want to open all files ?
    Do you get this message ?
    if yes your DVD is probably not protected.
    If you use DVDxdv, and your disk is protected, you should see green squares on the screen when you open files and get weired sound.

    Is Adobe software overpriced? Opinions vary.
    And FCPX is a bloated inefficient Apple app not ready for prime time, but will function nicely as a hardware upgrade requirement, it's already started. Why do you think it's so cheap.

  • Can VOB files DiVX / Xvid run on FCP

    Hi,
    I am totally unaware of FCP. I want to ask that can FCP accept VOB and Xvid/DivX files for direct editing and direct export ?
    Thanks

    No. You'd have to transcode them to a format which is supported. All common acquisition formats are supported (i.e, DV, HDV, DVCPROHD, etc..) but delivery formats are not directly supported by any pro editing software I know of.

  • Vob's in fcp?

    I just got a projector and am setting up a back yard theater, and I have backed up a lot of my dvd's with my pc (never tried it on my mac). What I want to do is create my own welcome to the theatre screen with fcp & motion and then utilize 2 of my back-ups files with some of the drive-in goodies on archive.org to have a double feature complete with pre cartoons and an intermission,all in 1 file so I don't have to change disks or even waste a disk on the goodies, just play it and delete it when done. Any one got any ideas what I need to do to start this project?

  • Unable to sync QT clips with fcp sequences.

    After converting some .vob files (using ffmpegX.app) into xxx.VOB.ff.mov files, and then importing those into an fcp project, I cannot bring the clips onto the timeline without getting an out-of-sync messages and the red rendering line on Timeline.
    Also, when I try to save this project for offlineRT editing by recompressing the project files, I'm shown that the new offlineRT destination file total will be three times BIGGER than the original media file.
    After spending hours comparing settings between the clip to sequence, I've given up and decided to post this message in hopes somebody can help me explain what I'm doing wrong.
    Here are the clip and Sequence settings:
    With the clip selected I go to Tools>Analyze Movie>Clip and I get:
    Video Track 1 (179.0 MB);
    Frame size: 640 x 480;
    Color Depth: 24-bit;
    Codec: mpeg4 at Medium Quality;
    Frame rate: 29.97;
    Average Data Rate: 186k/sec
    Audio Track (Stereo, 9.8 MB);
    Duration: 00::16:26:22;
    Average Data Rate: 10k/sec;
    Format: 16-bit, Stereo;
    Sampling Rate: 48.000 khz.
    I've set the sequence settings to:
    General Tab:
    Frame size: 640x480 NTSC (4:3)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square (same as clip settings)
    Field dominance: Lower (Even) (not sure about this one?)
    QuickTime Video Settings:
    Compressor: MPEG-4 Video
    Quality (I moved it from 100 to 50%)
    Audio Settings:
    Rate: 48 kHz
    Depth: 16-bit
    Config: Channel Grouped
    I did read on one site to Click the Load Sequence Preset and set it to Software Preset but this option is not available for me. So I set it to DV NTSC 48 (4:3) and every time I do this I have to go back up to the Sequence Settings Aspect Ratio and reset that back to NTSC (4:3) to get proper Frame Size.
    Hopefully, this is enough for somebody out there to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I downloaded Streamclip.app and followed your directions, but I still can't get the clip and sequence to harmonize (still can't bring the clip onto the Timeline without needing to render it). I did try letting FCP adjust the codec for me when I first brought the clip into the Timeline, but that didn't work.
    Can you please tell me which Sequence Preset I should use (that FCP offers) that will work with this codec DV/DVCPRO - NTSC at Medium Quality (I did what you said and still can't bring the clip onto the Timeline without needing to render it. I did try letting FCP adjust the codec for me, but that didn't work.
    The problem I'm having now is that the codec you recommended (DV/DVCPRO), which I used to convert the VOB file to a .mov file in MPEG Streamclip.app, is not available as so named in FCP's list of compressor/codec options. Can you please tell me which Sequence Preset I should use (that FCP offers) that will supply the 29.97 fps that will work with DV/DVCPRO - NTSC at Medium Quality? I've tried the DV NTSC 48 kHz and that doesn't work and makes rendering necessary.
    thank you again for any help you can give me.

  • Getting DVD footage into FCP

    I've got a DVD-R with my showreel burned on to it. I can play this on my Mac or on a DVD player etc but have not been able to work out how to get this footage onto my FCP in order to edit it further. If anyone can help, I would be very grateful.
    Cheers

    Consider not taking the original footage back into FCP.
    Demux the .vob's using StreamClip, to their native .m2v video and whatever audio format was used, and create a new DVD SP project using those ready to burn assets.
    In the track view, you can trim the already encoded assets - you may need to re-render the audio, or work with audio in aiff.
    Prepare new footage only in fcp, and encode in sections to new .m2v mpegs. Then, insert the newly encoded footage in with the originally encoded footage, using DVD SP as a rudimentary splice editor, in its track view. It is not frame accurate - you not be able to cut exactly where you would like to.
    It will be harder this way, but, you won't loose any quality over the original DVD, becasue you never decode and re-encode the original MPEG's.
    If this is too limiting, or difficult, then decode the lot and work in FCP - there will be a quality hit for decode / re-encode as David rightly says.

  • How to Import DVD content to FCP for editing

    My clients always bring us DVDs (both PAL and NTSC formats) for us to insert certain segments into the FCP project.
    Questions:
    1. We can import the PAL VOB file into FCP PAL project, but the images seems to be broken up in thick horizontal lines. It seems to be related to the interlace but we cannot fix it in FCP, not matter using deinterlace, switch field, de-flicker.
    2. No audio can be import in this way.
    We cannot digitally import those DVD files into FCP and we can only bring the DVD into FCP using component signals and analog audio through a DVD player.
    Any suggestion on how to import the DVD digitally into FCP, both audio and video?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mike
    (rem: those DVDs are most created by other post facilities, they are not encrypted movie DVDs, so this problem is not related to encryption or region codes.)

    Did you search the forum for DVD ripping? This is a very common problem and discussed all the time
    You have to rip the DVDs to a format that FCP understands like, for instance, DV video
    You can use software like DVxDVD a decent commercial product or MPEG Streamclip which is free but requires Apple MPEG Playback Component to make it work
