Vodafone USB Modem Stick - if I buy it in Italy, can I use it elsewhere?

I have been wrestling for a while now with the problem of how best to access the Internet, via my MacBook, while in Italy, where we have a holiday home.
I called in at the local Vodafone shop (in the town of Pergola, Pesaro-Urbino, Marche region). The guy there told me that I could buy a USB modem for 99 Euro, but he wasn't sure whether I would get a signal at my home, up in the hills behind the town. Now I can get a signal on my mobile phone there (with a UK Vodafone account).
I then came home and enquired about the USB modem at a UK Vodafone shop, to be told it could not be purchased outright (as it can in Italy), but only as part of an 18-month contract. As I would hardly be using it in the UK it makes no sense to pay the exorbitant fees that using it in Italy would involve.
So I'm left with the dilemma: should I shell out the 99 Euros for a dongle in Italy , presuming that I can use it anywhere that Vodafone Italy have coverage (maybe even my home there!)? And if I ever wanted to, could I use it back in the UK?
Any advice or suggestions from Mac-using dongle people would be welcome!

You need to check carefully with the local rules because the issue is not one of technical matters but policy.
First of all, the card will absolutely work. No doubt about it.
However, if it was purchased in Italy, it will have an Italian phone number associated with it (yes, even though it's not used as a phone it still has a phone number). When you use it in the UK it would be just the same as using a Italian-purchased cellphone in the UK with the same burdens of roaming charges, etc.
The situation may be worse with the data card because many wireless carriers place additional restrictions on data usage in addition to phone minutes and text messages. You may find that the Italian plan allows for, say, 5GB of data transfer per month, but only 10MB roaming data with a charge of €10/MB.
At that point the question is not whether it will work (it will), but whether you can afford to run it.

  • How do I securely eject vodafone USB modem in Yosimite?

    Hi Guys,
Every time I try to safely remove the usb modem , my system comes up with an warning message that the disk was removed without shutting down first and the restarts the Macbook ... this is freakin anoying.
I do go to the Vodafone software and close everything and also quit the application but still does it ..

Try going to 'Finder'. You should see something like 'Vodafone USB modem' or 'USB modem' under the 'Devices' tab on the left hand side of the 'Finder' window. There should be an icon next to it, that allows you to eject it. If not, right click or tap with two fingers on it (if you enabled the feature) and you should be able to eject it. If not, well... I can't help very much then.

I'm thinking of buying an iPad.  Can I use my home's wifi or do I need to get a plan for it?

Another thing to note is that if your cell plan/carrier supports it (it's free with Verizon Shared plans), you can also use your mobile phone as a mobile hotspot (Personal Hotspot on iOS devices) and use your phone's data to access the internet on the iPad. I purchased an iPad 3 with Verizon 3G/4G cellular built-in but have never activated it. I instead use Personal Hotspot with my Verizon Wireless cellular (phone) plan. If you go this route, you can save money over purchasing a Wi-Fi/Cellular iPad and just choose the Wi-Fi model. But also realize that if you choose to at some point to use the iPad when you're away from Wi-Fi, you won't have the built-in cellular capability that a Wi-Fi/Cellular iPad would have.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Read the system requirements for the programs you listed. Match them against the specifications of the machine you propose to buy. The more RAM the better, your hard drive size requirements and video card specicications may require the upgraded, not base, model or may eliminate the MBA as a platform.

i am looking at buying an ipad 2, can i use my 3gs as a hotspot to access 3g internet outside of wifi zones?

You would need to call your mobile carrier and inquire about their policies and ability for "tethering."

If I buy a Canadian iPhone can I use a British SIM card I.e. O2

You must get an unlocked phone from Apple. You will not have access to 4G or LTE systems. Your warranty will only be valid in Canada. You will have to pay any import or duty fees. Why not buy a phone in Britain?

I recently upgraded to a 5s.  My clock/radio iPhone plug in was compatible with my iPhone 4 so I could listen to Pandora.  Is there an attachment I can buy so that I can still use my clock/radio?

There are 30-pin to Lightning adapters, but I would be afraid it would put the phone too high up and risk damage. I would contact the radio company to see if they offer a unit that has a lightning connector.

  • MacBook Pro Wake-up numerous panics Vodafone USB modem

I have a MacBook Pro 15" with Mountain Lion OSX 10.7.5 installed. I plug in a usb modem "Vodafone Mobile Broadband K3765 HSPA USB Modem" or  "Vodafone Mobile Broadband K3520 HSPA USB Modem"(HuaweiDataCard). With the modem plugged into the USB when the Mac is not in use, it goes into Sleep mode. On wake-up the Mac OSX panic. I have tested this without the modem and there is no issues.
I have tested two different modems, made sure that both modems and Vodafone Mobile Broadband software is on the latest supported releases.
I have a similar panic happening when the Bluetooth mouse is on while the Mac wake-up.
Does anyone know of a fix for this issue ?

Any activity on a USB bus, including connecting or disconnecting a USB device, will wake the computer. This is as-designed and not a fault. I don't know of any way to prevent it.  Connect or disconnect your USB devices before putting the computer to sleep.

  • With vodafone usb modem broadband, it takes mozilla 5 mins. to access a website;Mozilla 1.7 takes 30 secs.

I have vodafone broadband mobile lite (USB modem) and after selecting a website, it takes up to 5 mins. to get there and open it. (and by the way, IE is the same), whereas old old Mozilla 1.7, which is what I am submitting this through, takes 30 secs, or so via vodafone.

  • I have 3 ipods that buy different stuff. Can i use one itunes account.

My 3 kids each have an ipod touch.  They used giftcard to buy all there stuff on them or got the free stuff. I have only hooked them up to a computer once when I got them.  Do i need an itunes account for all or use one for them.
    Please Help
    Mom with to many ipods

    You can do either.
If you want to easily share music and apps across all 3 then use one account. But then if there is money in that account, anyone can buy music or apps, as they all know the same password.
It is possible to have 3 accounts and also share music and apps, but this is a little more tricky and would require them to know each others logins, or keep asking that person to come and login on the app store/itunes update apps/download music and then logoff again.
You can keep a combined library on your computer as well so they all can easily use the same music/apps as well.

If taxes or fees are applied to the $59.99, I doubt that $60.12 will cover it. You may need to purchase another iTunes gift card which you can redeem to increase the funds available.
it is 59.99 dollers and i have 60.12 and it goes to the billing part
If there are not funds available you will see a dialog asking you to edit your payment information. When there are not sufficient funds, the difference between the purchase amount and funds available is deducted from a credit or debit card account. If you don't want to have a credit or debit card then purchase another iTunes gift card.

  • Buying a new iMac; can i use my eMac as a second display?

Hi, I'm just about to buy an iMac (intel core 2 duo), probably 17" 2 GHz with some extra RAM.
I currently have an eMac, and now I wonder, is there any way to use it (the eMac) as a second display for the iMac? Obviously, the eMac doesn't have any video input, but I'm thinking that maybe there is some third party solution that could send the second screen image through ethernet, firewire or usb? Or if there is any other way to solve this. Since I'm going to use the iMac for Logic Pro, I find it usable to keep the arrange window and mixer window on seperate screens, and I can't quite afford buying a new screen atm.
Though, if it doesn't work to do like this, maybe I'll buy an extra screen at some point in the future. Would I, in that case, need a special graphics card on the iMac? Or does it support two screens (with seperate content) as it is?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
Thanks for this great reply! I marked it as helpful.
By the way I happened to write another reply myself
(not to you, to my own post) while you wrote yours,
just wanted to note that to avoid confusion. I'm not
very used to these forums, sorry...
Yes, the forums can take some getting used to.
I saw your second post, and that is why I wrote my second reply. I thought you were clarifying based on my reply See we all get confused sometimes
Anyway, I guess a delay would probably grow
incredibly irritating very quickly, so I guess it
wouldn't be an acceptable sustainable solution,
    really.
Yes, the delay would probably be quite a problem in real use. The only way I could see around it would be to move slowly and then stop and make sure that the pointer doesn't end-up beyond where you stopped.
If you waited say 3 or 4 seconds and then clicked, you would know that the pointer is where it is.
But, that would slow-down your productivity.
I think a second monitor would be best.
So maybe buying a new screen is the best/only
"solution"... In that case, I think an LCD screen is
probably best as CRT's sometimes interfer with sound
equipment... So not having to turn one screen off
everytime I want to use a microphone would be
    convenient.
Yes, an LCD screen would probably be much more convenient. I much prefer LCD screens myself.
So, I'll simply be on the outlook for used LCD
    screens, then... Thanks!
You're welcome. Glad I could help.
