Voice Command won't respond through earbuds

I just upgraded to OS 4.3 on my iPhone 3Gs last week and while as far as I know everything seems to be working fine, I can't get the audio response portion of Voice Command to work with my headphones plugged in. In other words, I don't hear the "woman's" voice when "she" should be responding to my request. For example, if I say "Play Artist Rolling Stones" the iPod feature will work fine (I can hear the music) but there's no confirming "Playing Artist Rolling Stones" response through the headset before the music starts. If I say "Call George", it'll dial the number but there will be no "Calling George" announcement. If I ask "What time is it", I can see the audiograph on the display move but it's dead silence in the headphones. The earphones (and I've tried a couple of different ones with the same results) work just fine for listening to music, etc., and the microphone on the wire is definitely working (Voice Command works perfectly through the mic on the earphones to control music or dial phone calls). It's not a permanent thing because if I pull the plug out, Voice Command functions normally through the speaker (including the confirmatory response).
Is this a known bug with iOS 4.3? Should I restore the earlier version of iOS? Is there some setting I don't know about?
Thanks,
Nick

It's hard to believe that nobody figured this out! I finally found the answer by doing a search of the 'Net, which of course led me back to this discussion group. Apparently the installation of the latest version of iOS caused my iPhone to reset some of the volume controls. A contributor ("dkorakek") to this forum answered this very same question back in 2009 (see below excerpt). For those who find themselves in the same boat, the answer is to simply launch a voice command through the mic on the earphones and even if you don't hear the response, immediately start hitting the "up" button for volume control. If your experience parallels mine, you'll see that the volume for the headphones when in Voice Command mode only is basically at zero when you start but will go up to whatever you want. The volume adjustment can't be done without the earphone plugged in and a Voice Command being performed since changes to the level will only apply to the mode the phone is currently in (e.g., music through speaker, music through earphones, Voice Command through speaker, Voice Command through earphones, etc.). I never realized that the iPhone allowed the volume to be set individually for so many different functions. Who knew?????
Hope this helps someone!
Nick
P.S.: Thanks again to "dkoralek"!

Re: Voice Command doesn't repeat the info back!
Posted: Sep 6, 2009 8:31 AM in response to: Lixard52
I had this problem and realized what caused it. Like everything on the iPhone, volume can be set for almost every function separately (both with headphones, with the external speaker separately). When I had this problem, if I was using the external speaker, she would repeat my commands, the beep would sound, etc.), but nothing with the headphones (and in the back of my mind I noticed that it would vibrate when I enabled voice commands). What you might try is activating voice commands (holding the button) and then when the blue screen comes up, adjust the volume up. THis did the trick for me.
Cheers.

    Help, please.

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

My 2 month old IPhone started randomly turning on Voice Command and calls people and turns on the IPod.  It freezes up and won't let me push the home button.  Any suggestions?

OK, I reset it several times and it worked fine all day yesterday.  Today when I turned on the bluetooth it went back to the same problem.  Voice Control comes on and the home button won't work at all.  I have gone through the reset many times and it isn't working.  How do I restore firmware as you suggested?

What do you mean by "Off mode"? Do you mean the phone is turned "off"? If so, you can't do anything with any iPhone, other than look at it, if it's turned off. Off on an iPhone is off...nothing works.

How would one open an ipod if voice command is on but not responding? and the ipod has a opening page creen lock on as well.

I think you have the accessibility VoiceOver feature turned on.
Triple click the home button and try going to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn VoiceOver off. You may have to use three fingers to scroll the screen to get there. If problems see the following for how to turn off via iTunes:

  • Is there any way to control automator through voice commands?

is there any way to control automator through voice commands?
Im simply trying to program my macbook pro early 2011 8gigs ram to resound to voice commands using automator but I haven't found any discuss on the subject.

I have some AppleScript that expects a Pages (v5.2.2) document opened. It will then then speak the document name, and the count of words in the document. Or, I can trigger Speakable items and tell it to, "Switch to Pages" which it does immediately, because this is part of its repertoire of built-in commands. Then speak Word Count?
In Automator, I created an Application, in which I dragged/dropped the Library > Utilities > Run AppleScript action into the workflow window. I replaced the AppleScript boilerplate with my existing AppleScript code that speaks the word count, and saved the Application into <login dir>/Library/Speech/Speakable Items folder as Word Count? (without the .app extension). It can also be saved in the Application Speakable Items > Pages sub-folder under the general Speakable Items folder.
Next, I turned on Speakable Items in System Preferences > Accessibility > Speakable Items.
It took several tries to get a spoken result from the Automator application, but it did work. Even with a calibrated microphone, and speaking about 18 inches from it. About 2 successes for ten tries. If I just put the AppleScript (without extension) in the same folder, my success rate would improve to 5/10. You may grow very weary of the repetition necessary to get Speakable Items to work. A small pink text banner also appears with the spoken content in it — below the Speakable Items monitor on the screen.
Automator is scriptable. This means that in AppleScript, you can dynamically build an Automator workflow, and then execute it.

The use of iMessage depends on both the sender and the receiver having an active data connection. If either of the two connections are interrupted, the message can fail. The sending of an iMessage differs from the sending of an SMS, and if you are having SMS failures, that would be a carrier concern.

  • How do I use voice commands with CC on my Mac?

Howdy all! Just made the switch to Adobe from Final Cut 7. Overall, I'm digging it a bunch.
However, there's one aspect of CC on my Mac that's vexing me.
As you may know, there is speech recognition / voice command software built in to Mountain Lion (it's been around for years, and many iterations of OSX). With this software, you can make any number of custom voice commands for another piece of software. For instance, in FCP 7, I can program the keystroke "l" (play track) to respond to the voice command, "Forward." (It can be any word or phrase you type in.) This works with other programs as well.
All well and good, and pretty dang cool. However, I can't make any voice commands work with any of the CC software (I've tried Premiere and Media Encoder so far). I'm curious if anyone else has had any luck, or, perhaps, that the ported interface from Windows to Mac has some layer of code that (probably inadvertantly) blocks voice commands from working with CC on a Mac.
Anyone got any tips? Tricks? Confirmation that this simply won't work on a Mac? (If the last, I'd love to know the "why" as well.)
    Thanks!
    Best,
    Ian

  • Is there a way to turn on/off 3G for iPhone 4S with a voice command and/or without Siri?

For example, I almost always have 3G turned off on my iPhone 4S so that I won't use any of my cellular data when not needed. However, when I'm driving, and I need to use Maps for directions, it would be nice to unlock the iPhone by voicing my PIN and using a voice command to turn on 3G and accessing Maps.
Is there already a way to do this? I know that accessing applications via Siri will be capable when iOS 6 is released.
Voice Control should also be set to the default voice-command option when Siri is either off or when the iPhone does not currently have access to the internet. Because Siri requires the internet, Voice Control could be used to unlock the iPhone and turn on 3G. Once 3G is turned on, Siri can take over (if Siri is turned on in Settings) to access an application, like Maps. When finished, there should be a voice command that will "turn off 3G."
So, here's how the whole process could work:
    1) hold Home button to access Voice Control and respond with PIN to unlock the iPhone - "one, two, three, four" or "twelve, thirty-four" for PIN 1234 (I'm not sure if people would want to say, "one thousand, two-hundred, thirty-four")
    2) once unlocked, it should intuitively stay on Voice Control so the user can say "turn on 3G"
    3) if Siri is enabled, it will take over Voice Control; if Siri is disabled, Voice Control will remain active, bu you should also have the voice-command option to "turn on Siri" (now that 3G is on)
    4) a voice command to "launch Maps" - I know that this will capable with iOS 6
    5) when done, hold Home button and voice a command to "turn off 3G" via Siri
Could this feature please be integrated into iOS 6?
In terms of driving and accessing Maps, this would be a lot safer and a lot easier.
    Thanks!

  • IPOD Touch Screen zoomed in and won't respond

My screen zoomed in and is so large that I can't get the slides to respond to open or shut down. I have done the restore and reinstalled some music but that didn't solve the problem.  It only responds to voice command, it won't shut down because I can't slide the button across and when I can get into the system, the screen only shows me a small part of the topic and it won't move so I can't access anything.  Any ideas?

    - Double tap the screen with three fingers and go to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn off Zoom and Voice over too if you want.
    - Alternately, you can connect to your syncing computer and go to the Summary pane.  Click on Configure Universal Acess and turn off Zoom and Voice Over (if you wish).

  • Lumia 520 win8.1 voice commands.

    After windows 8.1 update.
Voice commands have now moved to the search button and the start button now does nothing. This means I have lost the search function. Is this by design or by accident?
Also to save disturbing my sleep I turn off wifi at night as my emails are not that urgent. Don't want to mute the phone in case an urgent call comes in. It seems that wifi sense overrides and turns wifi back on. What is the quickest way of ensuring silence without going through numerous clicks?

Thanks for the update, SonicBlue. Let's further verify if the issue is SW related or not. Try the following steps and see if the 'call' voice command will work:
    1. Reboot the phone. Press and hold the volume down & the power key for 10-15 seconds until it vibrates and restarts. This won't erase any of your files, but you will need to re-set up the date & time settings.
    2. Since the phone is already running Lumia Cyan, try checking if the system apps have already been updated as well. Go to Settings > swipe to applications > store > check for updates.
    3. Try to use the speech feature using another language pack. This will help verify if the issue is related to the English UK language pack that you're currently using or not. Make sure that the phone's regional settings are correctly set as well. Some commands only work within supported countries. You can check this link for info about the availability of voice commands per country: Feature and service availability - Go to Speech.

  • Landrover Evoque and Voice Commands - iOS 7 / iPhone 5S problems

I have a Landrover Evoque which has Voice Controls.
I also have iOS 7.0.3 and the iPhone 5S.
Before the upgrade to phone and iOS the voice controls worked fine in that it could call a contact based upon voice recognition in the car.
All worked fine until the new software upgrade.
However, if I press the Voice Command button and say 'Phone Call Contact" it returns a response "No Handset Connected" and fails.
However the phone is connected via Bluetooth and ALL of the contacts have been downloaded to the car address book.
    Anybody else have this?
    Anybody know of a fix?
In case anybody asks - the Bluetooth has paired ok, mad it will make and receive calls - it also will play the music through the Bluetooth.
However this is now more unsafe than it was before.

    No.
You can try a reset, hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.
or on your phone settings - general - reset - reset network settings - you will have to re enter password for known wifi.
