Voice dialing + lack of BASIC features and company communication

i beleive palm has managed to make an amazing operating system, ive never been able to manage notifications and apps so easily but the pres lack of features has been enough to get me to sell my pre to someone else that might just be coming off a non smart phone, and wants a beginner smartphone. the decision to switch does bother me but does palm have any plans in the near future to adress the lack of voice dialing? the lack of communications with future plans is aslo a mojor let down. given palms current state, i dont understand why theres no assurance to new and existing customers that palm is actually working on anything to add these features or what they plan to do in the future?! i will actually be making a switch from the palm very soon. ive used the htc hero before i came to palm and find the hero to be ten times more useful with alot more useful applications. shopsaavy is something that has saved me a great deal of money during the time that i was using it (probably enough to pay for the price of the phone) voice dialing makes it 10 times easier to keep from veering off the road when you have to make that important call to your employer to let them not your running late. though the operating system is amazingly well put together, its lack of features is what has me switching to android. dont get me wrong, i have nothing against palm themselves, i beleive you all are doing all that you can do to stay afloat and i wish palm the best....it just sucks that i wont be one of the customers helping palm do that.

Hello and welcome to the forums;
First, I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying your Pre, and hope that you will stick with us for everything that is coming. With that said, we don't even get advance notice of what 'new' is coming until it hits the public view. It all has to do with confidential information and NDA's. I hope you can understand why some things are kept secret until official launch dates are nailed down, and until all testing on new features is finished.
Voice dialing has been requested several times here in the forums, and our only recommendation is to make the request to our developers at www.palm.com/feedback where those in charge of making changes look for customer requests and ideas for new features.
Hope this helps,

  • About the iPhone and it's "lack of basic features"

There are SO MANY rants going on in this discussing board about the iPhone lacking "basic features" of a cellphone. Here is my response to all of them at once. (I know this has nothing to do with user-to-user technical support, but the topic is discussed on here enough to warrant this post.)
Sure, I would like to be able to send texts messages to multiple contacts, I would love to be able to add my own ringtones, copy and paste, and picture message. Here's the deal, Apple didn't set out to create a product with those features, they didn't set out to create a product that is like all the others or that has all the best features that every other phone has. They started over. They didn't compare it to any other phone. They have said over and over that the iPhone is a completely new product from the ground up. Sure it includes some features that can be found in phones that came before it, but it's all done in a new way. It's not some super phone that combines the best of every smartphone out there. They were very open about this and listed EVERYTHING the phone was going to be capable of. No, they didn't tell you the things that it wouldn't do, that's not the angle they were taking when designing and marketing this product, no one does that. The iPhone does everything they said it would do and does it better than any other phone that has the same features. So how can anyone come on here a gripe about it lacking basic features? The features I listed above are features that someone else reading this may never need or want. Basic features to you are not going to be basic features to me. Basic features 3 years ago are not basic features today nor will they be in 3 years. There are no basic features when it comes to the iPhone, other then perhaps the phone part. When you set out to create a product from the ground up, you don't start with a list of features that need to be included. You start with a blank slate and build on that, from your own ideas, your own technology, not based on what anyone else is doing or what has been done in the past. This is what Apple has done, and they have been very clear about it from day one. So please, if you feel that the iPhone lacks the "basic features" on a cell phone, take it back so that someone else can have that phone and enjoy its "basic features," that are like no other phone before it.

Your posting should have went to the Apple.com feedback section instead of posting it here in the user to user forum, this goes back to doing research on what the iphone can and cannot do before making the purchase you have to remember this is just the first generation iphone just like there was a first generation ipod most likely they'll be enhancements coming up for the iphone i myself am happy with my iphone, how many cell phones out there have visual voicemail?

  • TS3972 How can I access the files(movies, music, etc) in my Apple Time Capsule(4th Gen) from my Apple TV(3rd Gen). This is very frustrating Apple has not provided a basic feature, and me buying the Time Capsule and Apple TV is an complete waste of bucks.

I have an Apple TV (3rd Gen) and Apple Time Capsule (4th Gen). How can I access Movies and Music stored in the Time Capsule from Apple TV. This is very  n't give frustrating that Apple doesn't give their customers with an straight forward access to their customers in between their own products. Iam repenting that buying these products is completely waste of bucks. Appreciate your help...

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The Time Capsule is clearly announced as a router with a hard drive to make backups, not to store anything and share it with your Apple TV.
To access to movies and music from the Time Capsule, note that the Apple TV can only access to them if they are stored in your iTunes library, so you will have to put your movies and music into iTunes to access to them, and then, put your iTunes library on the Time Capsule in order to access to your data from there

  • Nokia N96, Bluetooth, and voice-dialing....

    Hi,
I upgraded from my N80 to an N96 and, being a rep and frequently on the road, Im finding the voice-dialing to be a real PITA.
The N80 would work just about anywhere. Car, street, pub, shops, wherever, it understood who I wanted to call. Not perfect, but close.
The N96 doesnt even PRETEND to understand me, throwing up any name at random it seems.
Worse, it is all very haphazard to use.
You press the top right function button and hold it down. On the N96, you could hold it for a very long time before it responds. Since the processor in this phone is way underpowered, it a second or two before your hear the Speak Now confirmatory beeps.
Couple that with the problem that many Bluetooth headsets power-down momentarily, it means that when youre driving along in the car and hold the button down on your BT headset, you dont actually hear the beeps. So you have to look down at the phone to see what its doing. While driving, this can be dangerous.
Now, because you ARE driving, the N96 is not likely to understand you anyway.
Nokia!! You need to go back to the drawing board here!!
    1) Fix the voice-dial activation - pressing the top-right button for two seconds is plenty.
    2) Play the bleeps WHEN the Speak Now screen comes up, not before! My N96 can take anywhere between 1 and 5 seconds between the bleeps and the Speak Now screen appearing!
    3) Play the bleeps a bit longer when the Bluetooth headset is activated. Most Bluetooth headsets take a second or two to wake up - the sound is over by then and you miss it.
    4) Go back to the N80 and read the code for what you did in that phone. It worked fine there!

    Nokia: Connecting People... with iPhones.

Still here is no improvement with voice dialing with ver 12 soft and training sessions to n96.
It handles well with some names, but not with most. My old N95 did it much better from beginning (no training need!).
And extra case is with bluetooth HF - I stopped for waiting now for this stupid "beep" that is coming or before or after or in the middle the time, when voice detection screen is there. Now I just try to say the name about 2 sec after pressing BT button.
So, I hope some good Nokia engineer happens to read those voice dialing posts and in soft ver 13 we get better dialing (and finally somehow faster phone). Or do we, all who don't like extra slow processor should go in same day to service/operator and give in protest about the speed..

  • Why no voice dialing???

It's strange that a phone as advanced as the iphone is lacks some basic features that even cheap mobile phones have had for years like voice dialing. I remember my Moto v60i i had 4-5 years ago had this feature. Not sure why Apple chose not to include it in the iphone.
    lenn

It's true what they say about "people don't believe what they see, the see what they believe" for the last time....
I AM NOT DISPUTING THE NEED FOR VOICE ACTIVATED DIALING.
How many times must I repeat that?????
what I am asking (that you keep conveniently ignoring) is...
If this is such an important feature to you why the heck would you buy the phone knowing it doesn't have it?????
I'm POSITIVE you once again won't answer and if you do, I'm sure it will be some whining and crying about Apple's "failure" to included voice dialing instead of owning up to your "failure" in purchasing a product that doesn't suit YOUR taste. Also please don't tell me you "didn't know" weather or not it had voice dialing or you "assumed" it would. What idiot would spend 600 bucks on a product without knowing if it will meet their needs? The EXACT iphone users manual included in every box is available from Apple as a free download. You can know everything any other user would know without dropping a dime
The phone is, what it is. If it suits you, buy it. If it doesn't, don't. Really quite simple. I too have features I'd like to see. So I submitted them here
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Where they might actually be seen by people who can effect change (fancy that) Yelling in here with "surprise" and "shock" doesn't do a darn. Unless it's pity you're after.
I eagerly await your response......To my ORIGINAL question that is. (hoping against hope)

  • Lack of basic mobile phone functions

OK, so I'm a Mac junkie. I got 6 iPods, and 5 macs (god only knows how many macs I've bought in my life) so I'm a lover not a hater, but I've just got home with my brand new (UK) iPhone and I'm stunned at how basic a phone it is. Ok, so the web browser is great and it's a nice iPod bit it's called an i"PHONE" and it can't touch my 2 year old Nokia 6680!! I'm gonna be embarrassed demoing it to my friends. Can't even send all my friends my new iPhone mobile number without retyping the same message every time!! Come on, bulk sms is child's play!! And I can't bluetooth my photo's of my kids from my old phone to my new one? I thought apple were all iFamily friendly? This is basic stuff. Can't text someone a photo? Come on MMS has been around for years! No where to put files !! 8GB and I don't have access to an area to store files! What if I want a pdf on my phone or a word doc or an image that is not a photo or for use in my photo library (logos etc) Even an iPod can have an area used to store files!!
Waited three years from the start of the rumours to buying an iPhone and right now Apple have never dissappointed me more. My mobile bill has just gone from £10 per month for 300 mins and 300 texts (Virgin) to £35 for 200 mins and 200 texts, just to get this phone and it's looking like I'm gonna have to keep the Nokia to use as a Phone and use the iPhone as an iPod. Will they trade it for an iPod Touch and cancel the mobile contract to ya think?

    Ok Guys,
To those who said tell Apple - that was the first thing I did. My post was a copy of what I sent them. To those that said the features were well documented. Yes, the features were. The lack of basic features was not. Apple certainly don't publicize it! Maybe I should not "assume" they would include such basic stuff as I have complained about but if I'd installed leopard and it didn't have textedit included or it couldn't copy from one drive to another or some other basic feature, everyone would think it ok to mention it. To those who suggest I take it back and cancel my contract, that's 1 of the two possibilities I'm seriously considering right now. To those who point out that Apple may well update and the iPhone will eventually live up to it's name, well that's the other possibility I'm considering and the one I hope for most!
I'm an Apple junkie because they so rarely let me down and I hope that on this occasion they will realise that they have performed below par in the phone functions and address it. I sincerely hope this is the case 'cause it's basically a nice little gadget.
Please don't suggest that one should not come to an Apple Forum to address complaints about an Apple product. It's without doubt the best place to do it. I'm not running down the company or their methods. design practices or standards. Just the specific lack of features in these area. If enough people "winge" about them here then they will be high on Apple's list of things to address. If the only posts here are ones asking if they come in different colours....
Here's hoping for a great future for the iPhone. Rant finished. Now I'll go load Logic Pro 8 (despite it's numerous bugs I've already politely noted in a mail to Apple that mostly mentioned what a GREAT update it was) on my old G5 which I will happily change for a 8 core Mac Pro as soon as the Penryn equipped models are announced. I'm typing on my old Domed iMac that needs replacing for one of those sexy new Aluminium ones' cause I can't be bothered to go power up my Mac Book (on which Leopard is running beautifully).
My point is (again) I love Apple so don't jump to their defence, that's my job, but when they fail to exceed they can not fix, what they don't know we are unsatisfied with and here is the place to talk about it.
I've noticed lots of posts about texting to multiple recipients and a far few about picture messaging so I guess they may be things we'll see soon. But please Apple, some file management and the some proper Bluetooth implementation!!
    Loadsof love,
    G

  • Iphone4 - i0s 7.1 update - cannot turn voice dialing off

Ever since my phone updated last week - whenever my phone has been locked and gotten pressed against something in my back it has been dialing random numbers. When i first got my phone I disabled voice dialing/calling by going to settings-general-passcaode-lock-turn off voice dialing. However, since the update the passcode has a bit of it's own and even inside that there is no voice dialing turn off option.
Anyone know where the voice dialing' turn off/on feature is now with the new update?
    Thanks

just spoke to adviser and they fixed it with this:
    1. Turn Siri on --> settings --> general --> Siri
    2. (just for the case you deactivated Siri here, not sure if you need to do that)
settings --> general --> restrictions --> Siri on
    3. settings --> passcode --> Turn Passcode on --> Allow Access when Locked --> Siri OFF
and it works better than before since you can't activate Voice Control anymore when your iPhone is locked...

  • Voice dialing and talking caller ID

I bought the nokia n9 and while I am very happy of how it looks and feels and greatly disappointed for the lack of many necessary apps and features. The upmost important of which are the voice dialing and talking caller id.
Will we ever see these features available to nokia n9? Maybe a better question would be: will nokia ever going to update this device to pack missing features or not?

    not at the moment.
not too sure about what is coming in pr1.3 though...couldnt say if it will include voice operation...not that it is necessary.
if nokia does indeed kill using the meego/harmattan os, the community will surely keep it alive somehow for a while.

  • My elderly mother hss EXTREMELY limited vision and is a technophobe. I am considering an iPhone with Siri.  Can I turn off everything else so she can use only the phone app and voice dialing and not accidentally open any other app and screw something

My elderly mother has EXTREMELY limited vision and is a technophobe. I am considering an iPhone with Siri.  Can I turn off everything else so she can use only the phone app and voice dialing or Siri and not accidentally open any other app and screw something up.

I'm asking, in all seriousness, why do you think your mother needs an iPhone? Honestly, if your mother is, as you described her, a technophobe, I would recommend against getting an iPhone or any other smartphone. I've spent a fair bit of time teaching older folks to use smartphones. If they are interested in learning, it's fine. If they have the phone because their kids or grandkids thought it was a good idea but they are afraid of the phone or not interested in its features, it doesn't go well at all.
Many basic phones have voice dialing. Obviously, it doesn't do all the things Siri does but it may be much less intimidating for your mom. Also, basic phones have hardware keys. Even someone with limited vision can learn the keyboard on such a phone. From the sound of your first post, all she will be doing is making phone calls.
    Best of luck.

  • Will a voice dialing car kit feature work with iphone 3g?

I am a new iphone user, and I know it doesn't have voice dialing, but I can't figure out if I can get around this by buying a car kit that offers voice dialing (e.g. parrot or motorola). Does this feature on the car kit require that the phone do voice dialing itself, or does it stand alone?
Or ... any chance of an app being developed/released to allow voice dialing on the iphone directly?
    Thanks.

Tried it. It works, but isn't a perfect solution. Here's the direct link to the app.
There's a brief one-time initialization. With the app active, you need to press and hold a large icon while you speak. It searches, finds the contact, and presents you with a list of 4 possible numbers (main, home, work, mobile). Even if you have only one type of number (e.g. just the mobile number), you get all 4 buttons (the others just say 'not available') and have to press the button to make the call. It only works via the built-in mic, not bluetooth.
So, assuming you have the app open when you start driving, you'd need to press-and-hold while you speak, then locate and press the number choice. That's two looks at the screen, and that assumes it gets the name right (it did a pretty good job in my testing, missed one, and the "next name" button is pretty small. Easier than scrolling through contacts, though.
IMHO, a better bet for frequently called numbers is a Utility like Speed Dial, definitely worth the 99¢.

  • Curve 8330 Voice dialing and sound problems, Please help!

I got this black berry curve 8330 from a friend on the weekend to replace my broken Pearl. He said it worked fine but it sometimes had a voice dialing problem. After wiping all the personal data and activating the phone the voice dialing went nuts. Every 6 to 9 sec the voice dialing would activate with no sound. meaning you don't hear the lady voice say, "say a command". After reading many forums posts I download memmax and removed all VAD files. But I will still left with no sound. I went and did a test on the hardware and the speaker and microphone both worked fine. Puzzled I tried playing a ringtone, , it plays maybe the first second of the file and then the sounds goes away but I am able to get it back by press the Speaker/$ key. I then tried making a phone call and the phone was working just fine. About an hour later I tired calling someone and the issue had raisin again. This time I was unable to get the sound back. (I tried resetting many times with no success.) I could still play media files, but was unable to get sound making or receiving calls (this includes the other party not being able to hear me as well.) I tired changing profiles with no success. I then did some more reading and tried updating the OS. Once that was done and voice dialing had been reinstalled and started acting up again. SO I removed it and basically everything happened all over again. So right now I have a phone that I can’t make calls on but I can still text and use the internet. Does anyone know a solution to this problem? Should I try wiping the OS and reinstall or is this phone toast?

The msi nforce package 2.29 fixes the NVMCP.SYS error and turns it into a very rare system freeze. 8o
    Very rare!
been waiting almost 9 months for this fix so i could pull the damm soundblaster out! :O

  • 3.21.6 Upgrade Features/Voice Dialing

I just had the new update pushed to my phone. I used it briefly and notice some changes, but is there someplace I can go to read a description of the full upgrade features?
Also, WHEN is this phone going to have voice dialing capabilities, and don't tell me it does......that **bleep** app is a bolt on afterthought that works like an AMC Pacer, which for you younger guys means it sucks. I want full voice dialing like the iPhone has had and every other cheap Verizon phone has had for years. How can this be the biggest baddest phone Verizon sells and it's a step backwards? I keep hearing they're working on it.......really? Working on it? I so took for granted that it would be part of the OS that I didn't even ask. I guess that's my fault, but if they don't work this out and soon, it's back to the HATED AT&T for me to get a phone that does what it should. Love Verizon, but so far the Incredible is a poor replacement for my iPhone.

Here is the steps to navigate to the use of voice dialing on your phone hope this helps!
Voice dialer cannot be initiated by a Bluetooth headset.
From the home screen, touch the applications tab(located in the lower-left).
    Touch Voice Dialer.
When prompted, say one of the following example commands.
    "Call <Name or Number>"
    "Call Voicemail"
    "Dial <Number>"
    "Dial <911, 811..etc>"
    "Redial"
    "Open <Calendar, Music...etc>"

  • Iphone 4 voice Dial used to work great, but now, I can't get it to recognize voice commands. When i give it a command to call someone, it ends up repeating someone elses name and starts the call. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

I have an I phone 4 with 32g.  The voice dial used to work just fine, but now it doesn't recognize the words and ends up saying someone elses name and starts calling the wrong person.  It even won't recognize a number when spoken to it and speaks back and calls the wrong numbers.
Lately, the phone has really slowed down.  I am not sure if this is the problem.. I have closed all the open apps and deleted any extra picture off the card and extra songs that I have downloaded and the slow problem still exists.
Would a reset work to restore the phone to factory settings and if I then resync the phone, would all contacts pictures and songs be restored?

What is wrong with your Mac?  You still haven't told us what the problem is. Is the computer still under warranty or Apple Care?
the next time i attempted to use the computer it wasn't fine
What do you mean by "wasn't fine".  We can't see your computer so you'll have to describe what your're experiencing in detail without the editorializing.

  • Spent thousands of dollars and can't even use basic features

    MacBook Pro - $2000
    iPhone - $800
    Apple TV - $100
What the **** is going on with Apple?
I can't sync my iPhone and MacBook Pro. Sometimes is discovers both devices but then fails to sync. Other times neither recognises each other even when they're both in the list. As part of Mavericks, I'm supposed to be able to share Maps with other devices, but it won't recognise my iPhone. Why the **** did I spend nearly three dollars on Apple products when I now have to go back to my PC for basic features. I've spent hours on the phone with Apple about problems, and while the service might be immediate and very couteous, most the time they don't understand what I'm talking about or they haven't got a solution. With thousands of features on the iPhone and Macbook Pro, I only wanna use about 2 dozen.
Here's some of the things I don't even bother with now -
iTunes - Can't delete recent plays, can't stop it playing from that same list the moment you plug it into a plug and play, so huge and cumbersome with too many features, but just try playing music only. I don't want album covers or info downloaded from the Net. I don't want all the songs segregated into albums and the like. I play songs and then try to find them in Recently Played and they're not even there, but songs I've play over a year ago and which I don't want arer still stubbornly there and can't be deleted. Media Player is the same. I'ma prefoessinal musician and sound engineer and I've never known anyone to have used more than 10% of the features in iTunes. Who the **** are the Apple tech heads developing products for? Scientific Audiologists? Pathetic program, don't even use nowadays, but it still has the ability of popping it's ugly head up from time to time.
Audio - I run Logic Pro X and EVERYTIME I connect a new audio interface, I have to go to Preferences>Sound and change the Input and Output. EVERYTIME!!!!!!!!!! Sometimes when recording, I have to the correct the sound preferences 40 times a day, I've counted them on a number of occasions. Apple is meant to be THE audio expets and yet I'm back using Cubase on my PC or even sometimes having to go back to my old iMac and Logic Pro 9!! Along problems I'm experiencing with Logic Pro x, Apple now wants me to return my MacBook pro to them possibly for up to six weeks. This is after I've transferred my whole business on to the MacBook Pro and literally can't do without it.
Contacts - they don't sync with iCloud, other devices, Skydrive or any other synced app, although, sometimes they do.
The Dock - some of the Apps in the Dock when already opened won't open with a click or double click. I have to right click on the icon, Show All Windows and only then can I open the App. On my PC, I open all programs in "their dock" with one click.
Let me explain what will happen now. Nothing. I can't afford to give my MacBook Pro to Apple to fix or even call them up again about these probs cause it takes HOURS and HOURS and HOURS and HOURS. Last time I rang them, it cost me about $300 in lost productivity.
I think that when Steve Jobs passed away, Apple died along with him.
I'm not an Appy Chappy ... pathetic

  • New voice features and voice changing options for ...

    Hello everyone!
I am currently involved in a class project in which I am trying to understand whether companies like Skype would be interested in technology that can modify voice/call characteristics such as pitch and tone (for entertainment or audio improvement) or even add the possibility to use cartoon voices and so on. What do you guys think about this?
    All the feedback is welcome!!
    Thank you!

Hi, Mcastanheira, and welcome to the Community,
Whilst Skype may not be providing for such a facility, I trust you are researching third-party developer software add-on's which might.
