Voice Memos File management with wireless remote hard drive

Dragging unwanted voice memos from within iTunes application to trash, then emptying trash, won't delete voice memos in the "voice memos" folder in iTunes Media on my external remote hard drive. Why not?
I manage my iTunes music from my laptop, storing the actual files in an iTunes Media folder on a hard drive connected to an Airport Extreme. The hard drive was close to full and I decided the culprit was giant voice memo files. I didn't need most of them so I dragged them to the trash from within the voice memos "playlist" in iTunes. This removed them from the playlist, but even when I emptied the trash via the Finder pull down menu, the files stayed in the actual folder on the hard disk. Disk still full. What gives?

Hi Samboni98, and a warm welcome to the forum!
You could do that, but a far better idea would be to clone the 160 to the 500, then boot from the 500 which besides beimg faster, OSX just loves lots of Free space.

  • File Folder with Question Mark: Hard Drive Failure?

I did a search on this topic in these forums, so I think I know what's going on but want to confirm:
I shut down my MacBook Pro this morning and tried restarting it but got a blinking file folder with a question mark. Tried to restart from Disk Warrior (pressing C while restarting) but got the same thing.
Does this mean my hard drive has failed and there's no remedy I can try myself?

The flashing question mark is usually a sign that the hard drive has failed and drives can fail at any point, yours may simply have some bad sectors; it could also be the logic board. It should boot from the DiskWarrior disk though. Try again.

  • How do i convert a voice memo into MP3 with itunes 12?

I need to convert a voice memo into MP3 with itunes 12.

Today, I emailed myself an .m4a voice recording from an Android smartphone that had created that sound file minutes earlier.
After opening that email message, I saved the .m4a sound file (a whopping 352 KB) to my Mac (iMac 21.5 inch running Yosemite).
Clicking on the sound file's icon launched iTunes (version 12.0.1.26), which then did nothing no matter what I tried.
However, when I selected the file on the desktop and navigated to the Finder/File/Open With dropdown window, a dialog box opened with alternative applications to use for opening the sound file. The available applications shown were VLC, QuickTime Player, Flip Player, and RealPlayer. I was pleased to find that VLC, QuickTime, Flip Player, and RealPlayer each opened and played the file straightforwardly and flawlessly.
Apparently, Flip Player Pro (which I do not own) has a "save as" feature that might help you convert the file to the format you desire.

  • IMac 10.5.8 is stuck on Apple logo loading screen , how can I back up my files with an external hard drive ?

so my iMac (10.5.8 its pretty old ) got stuck on the apple logo loading screen (as I call it lol) and it will not go beyond that .I've already made and appointment for the genius bar but now would I back up my files with an external hard drive ? No unfortunately I don't have any other laptop or computer just the external hard drive. how would I back it up? Does it have something to do with "target disc mode"?

    Hi,
Thank you for great advice re SuperDuper.
You wasnt to know we didnt live in  USA.  We will try to get the full retail version of Leopard off the net.  We will also phone round the apple resellers.
In the meantime, we are happy running Tiger with the knowledge that SuperDuper has cloned our hard drive in case of a disaster.
SuperDuper recommended backing up the hard drive with a new user account if we were using filevault on the master account.  We backed up our hard drive without creating a new user with filevault as we could not read the pdf `Instuctions as preview was not responding.
Is this copy safe to use as a bootable drive or should we copy our entire HD again using a new user account without filevault?

hi, I have a macbook pro with a new hard drive installed and restored. My WD external drive backup on time machine now wont let me access the files. I get a prompt saying 'you do not have permission to access the files' After my new drive was installed I plugged in time machine and it started backing up. I paused it when I realised that it was running for more than a few minutes. I now realise that it probably started backing up the new hard drive all over again. Which makes me think that the original back up must be on the WD back I cant seem to access it. Any ideas would be helpful.

  • File Manager with tree view

I've been using Cinnamon with the Nemo file manager for a while now but I'm wanting to remove Cinnamon and have only Openbox and Awesome installed. The only thing that's stopping me now is I'm unsure of what to use for a file manager. The feature of Nemo that I really like is the ability to show folders in tree view in the main pane when in detailed list view. I know that most of them probably have the tree feature in a side pane but I want it in the main pane.
I'd like something with as few dependencies as possible since I'm wanting a more minimal approach to my system. Nemo requires Cinnamon, I'm guessing that Nautilus has the feature that I'm looking for as well but that requires Gnome.
Can anyone recommend another file manager with this feature? Or is there any way to install Nemo/Nautilus without their desktop dependencies?

drcouzelis wrote:It doesn't look like Nemo requires Cinnamon. What do you mean?
claire ~ % pacman -Qi nemo
    Name : nemo
    [snip]
Depends On : libexif gvfs dconf desktop-file-utils exempi python2
    cinnamon-desktop gnome-icon-theme libnotify libxml2
    cinnamon-translations
I think this is what is meant.

Not really, since those libraries are required to run the respective file manager.

  • Looking for a file manager with copy queue

    Hey,
I'm looking for a file manager with a file-copy-queue feature.
It is useful when browsing mounted samba shares, and you find something you want to copy.
You'll then start copying the files, and then spot another useful folder. You start copying that as well
and suddenly you got 5 different file copies processing at the same time, which decreases the copy speed.
I also miss the feature when transfering files from my external harddrives.
If there is a lot of FM's with this feature, I prefer one without kde-dependencies, as I am using xfce.

Ranguvar wrote:If MC really does have that as a feature, it's once again proved itself _the_ graphical (sorta) file manager.
    sorry for misinformed.
mc has a background job option while copying, it is not exactly a queue like functionality, but simulating to be a queue, and you can stop/resume a background job.

  • File manager with tree view in main pane?

I'm looking for a file manager with something similar to Nautilus' list view, with a list and tree structure as a main view.
The nautilus one is awesome, but nautilus has qwerks if you don't use gnome (wants to control desktop, panels are very restricted, etc.)
Does anyone know of a file manager with a view similar to this that I can try out?

I've seen a few things on spacefm, and played with it a bit. Took me 3 minutes and 2 segmentation faults to find the setting to change views, and it still doesn't have the ability I want, so still a bit too buggy for me.
Pcmanfm is a good all around filemanager, but doesn't have that feature either.
I played with a slew of file managers one day looking for similar things, maybe I should try that again and branch out further than what's in the repos.
    More suggestions?

  • New IMac 27"with dual internal hard drives

How do I manage Data on my new IMac 27"with dual internal hard drives?  I have just migrated my data to my new computer.  Since I've done it from a TM backup, it all went to the Analog HD. Ressearching online I've figured I could re-run Migrating assistant and replace different data between the SSD and the Analog.  My problem now is: I want to keep my Music Library (iTunes), my Aperture Library and my documents on the analog, and use the SSD for System, Users and Apps.  Aperture, is easy, because both Aperture and iPhoto can find their way, bt iTunes and My documents are a issue.  Can Anyone help me?

Install OS X on the SSD:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your SSD volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on
the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero
Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to change the target disk to your SSD.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
After you boot from the SSD open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the user account and select Advanced Options. You will see a Home Dir: field with a Browse button on the right. Click on the button. Navigate to the HDD's Users folder. Select your account folder then click on the Open/Choose button. You must restart immediately.
Upon the restart your SSD system will now be using your actual Home folder located on the HDD. You can then go about installing your applications or copying them from the HDD to the Applications folder on the SSD (and also from the Utilities folder on the HDD to the one on the SSD.) You will likely need to do some transfers of the Applications Support and Preferences folders found in the main Library folder.

  • Setting Up Time Capsule as a wireless external hard drive

I have a 2 TB TC that I wish to set-up as a wireless external hard drive at my office for my private files only not the entire company.  I would like for this to be private as well.  Here is my set-up now.
    MB Pro late 2011
Connect to company network & internet via ethernet.
I cannot connect the TC to company network - security reasons - company policy
I would like to use the TC as a external hard drive that I can access wirelessly for using Time Machine and backing up other image files from my scanner.
The problem is that when I setup the TC it is telling me to connect ethernet.  I can't because that is how I access my company network and internet.
    Can this be done?  Thanks!!

But....in order to now connect to the TC via wireless, you will have to first unplug any Ethernet connection that may be present on your Mac.
Or, if you do not want to unplug and replug the Ethenret cable, you could change the connection order to have your computer connect to wireless first and then Ethernet.
In this case, when you turn off the wireless on the Mac, the Ethernet connection will become active.
The downside here is that you will have to turn the wireless back on to be able to back up or connect to the TC. In other words, backups will not be automatic unless you are connected via wireless to the TC.
There should be a way around this.
The issue is that the computer cannot use two gateways at once. It will either use wireless or ethernet. But in fact the computer does not need a gateway to communicate with the local network.
Follow Bob's instructions to setup the TC. But make sure the TC is using a different IP subnet to the main network.. eg.. main network is 192.168.1.x (which you can see from the ethernet IP address) then the TC on its default IP 10.0.1.1 is fine.. but if the main network uses 10.0.x.x which is fairly common, then swap the TC over to 192.168.1.1 for instance. It can be any value.. as long as not in the same subnet (ip range) as the main network..
Then on the computer.. keep the ethernet as the top connection.
Set the airport IP address manually.
Following the first example.. set the IP address to 10.0.1.10 with 255.255.255.0 subnet.
Do not set router IP or gateway or dns. (this is the most important part).
    Apply all of that.
You should be able to detect the TC and connect to it. But it will not stop your main network working at the same time. And there is no link between them as long as you do not route it in the MBP.
Come back if you have issues.. or my explanation is lacking somewhere.
To do the setup it is usually required to do ethernet first and then you can unplug it.
If you have wifi in the office.. try and make sure you do not interfere. And set it manually with a different name for 5ghz.. and join only to the 5ghz network.. it will be both faster and less likely to cause interference to others. Most will not even see it. Set suitable password with wpa2 personal security so no one else can connect.
