Voice Memos - visually low decibel level

Hi all,
I just bought a brand new iPhone 5s (coming with iOS 7.0.2) and I'm overall very happy with it. But when I opened the Voice Memos app and tried to record something I got a little bit worried that my mics might not be working properly or hopefully it's just a software thing.
First of all, I've already read quite a few threads both here and in the other forums about this app crashing down or not finalizing the recordings properly, I haven't tested it out yet. I have a different concern, when I tried to record my voice at a normal distance holding my iPhone in my hand streched out approximately 1.5 feet away from my mouth and speaking as I usually do (not too loud but kind of just like when having a conversation in a non-noisy environment), the waveform depicted in the app stayed almost flat which according to a scale on the right hand side means less -10 dB (or negative infinity as it would usually be gauged on professional sound equipment). I don't really think it's normal since the waveform is supposed to be useful for editing memos and it seems like the waveform will be visible either if the sound source is loud or close.
I'm particularly anxious for two reasons. Firstly, I often have to record stuff because I'm a student and a musician so I really need my mics to work properly. Secondly, I've had bad experiences with mics on other Apple devices. At some point the mic on my iPad 2 became very insensitive. I almost had to put it an inch away from my mouth for it to be able to record anything. Then I learned that vacuuming the mic helps but only for a while. It couldn't be judt dust or anything because at some point it would suddenly relapse into this condition the following day without gradually becoming less sensitive, it was just a snap and it wouldn't work well. Then something similar happened on my iPod 4th gen but I didn't even try to vacuum it. I dropped both of these devices but this problem appeared on my iPad befor that I believe. So I'm really worried about these mics problems being a seemingly common issue with Apple devices.
So I was wondering if anyone has similar problems/concerns. I haven't tried recording something really loud maybe such calibration will come handy. In my trial of the app I could hear the recorded sound (as if coming from a distance but quite passable). So I hope it's a software calibration rather than a hardware issue. I decided to carry out a test and since the volume of the sound is a difficult thing to reproduce in the exact same conditions I tried to set it up so that some of you might be able to repeat it if you want to compare our results. So I bought 'Blurred Lines' by R. Thicke on iTunes, a popular song these days, playbacked it on my iPod 4th gen at maximum volume (oops just realized I have an iPod volume limit set up at about 75%) placed at various distances from my iPhone 5s so that the iPod's top faces the iPhone's bottom.
Here are the results:
1 foot away - negative infinity
8 inch - almost the same
4 inch - topping at -10 dB
2 inch - -7 dB
0 inch (almost touching each other) - -3 dB sometimes going up to 0.
And by the way in the right hand corner there's a speaker sign which I assume means recording with a bottom mic for calling or the mic that's near the camera. The results are basically the same. And one more thing, when recording videos I get clear sound.
So if you got to the end of this post I know my experiment is kind of complicated, I just like to have this scientific approach. You can try to repeat it if you have time and can set up all the same conditions but otherwise any opinion/information will be very welcome.
Thanks in advance!

For iphon 5 after the last update, to listen to your recored voice memos, you have to tab the speaker symbol on the upper right corner of the file page. You can also use the bluetooth or headphone to listen to your recordings.

  • Voice memo playback low volume, ipod touch 4th gen bluetooth

After recording a voice memo on my ipod touch 4th gen.  I play it back on my bluetooth JBL flip.  Now when I playback sound levels are sometimes extremely quiet, and other times play at normal volume.  Volume on Ipod touch and JBL flip will be maxed out and still volume playback are extremely quiet.  I have tried turning off and on Ipod and not found anything work consistently at solving this issue.

Do you have a Phone? In your case i would save some money for an iPhone. Like i am doing now - i also got a 4G iPod.
Anyways if you really wanna go for another iPod, take the 5G now. The 5G is a big update from the 4G and Apple released it last year, so i think that the 6G will come in 2014.

  • 5th Generation Ipod voice memo volume low

My voice memos are really low. Is there an adjustment I can make. Were working fine for quite a while but now Low. Software is up to date.

Normally, if you plug your ipod into your computer, you are able to reset your password even though you haven't set one. Try looking for a 'password reset' or something like that. Hope that helps.

  • Low volume when playing back voice memos.

When I play back a voice memo on my 5S, the volume is very low. Voice texts from other people are nice and loud, ringtones and music are audible from several feet away, people have no problem hearing me, nor I them, when I use my speaker phone, so I don't think this is a problem with the speaker nor with the microphone. Any suggestions other than 3rd party apps, speakers or headphones? I would like to think that the phone doesn't need any external help with one of its built-in apps.

I found the solution in another thread. There is a little speaker icon on the upper right of the voice memo screen that is white normally, but if you tap it, it turns blue (on my iPhone) and the volume is essentially at the same level as other sounds like music, ring tones, etc.

  • Record Level Adjust for Audio in Voice Memo or Video Recorder

I would like to request that Apple allow me to adjust the record audio volume level when recording in Voice Memo or Video Recorder modes. Often I find that the audio is distorting and most times I cannot step back far enough to avoid distortion levels. While I love the ability to SEE the audio level in Voice Memo mode, I am hoping that it is only a matter of firmware upgrade to be able to ADJUST the record level.
Also, if it is possible, it would be great to see some indication of audio level when recording video... something simple like a bar graph with green, yellow and red bars with the highest level reached sticking for a few seconds so that I can tell what the level is.
An alternate solution (if none of the above is possible in a firmware update) would be to automatically adjust the recording level to prevent audio distortion.
Thanks for the great iPod and here's hoping for a great firmware update in the near future!

Thanks, I've submitted my recommendation to Apple.

  • Can't lower voice memo volume. My decrease button doesn't work anymore. Any other way i can lower it without disabling speaker

Own an iphone 5. Can't control voice memo volume from anywhere that deals with volume on my phone. My decrease button doesn't work. I have to listen to my voice memos on full blown volume. Can't lower it from settings or from music. Help please!

    Hi,
    thanks for your answer.
The Size of all disks is: 6 x 4 TB.
In the Pool are 5 x 4 TB plus 1 x Hot Spare.
It comes up to about 14,6 TB of Data formatable.
But tried it also with just 3 x 4 TB to see if it works.
I just made a Raid5EE on the controller and then used Storage Spaces with simple, all worked fine.
Here the results of my tests:
    1) your command had to be modified (typoe in usemaximumsize, and had to add -ResiliencySettingName Parity.
new-virtualdisk -friendlyname testpsh -storagepoolfriendlyname test -ResiliencySettingName Parity -usemaximumsize
But anyway, my problem is not creating the virtual disk, but formatting the partition if it's parity only.
    I added a screenshot:
Here you see my storage pool, and I added 3 virtual disk.
1 simple, 1 mirror, 1 parity. Only the parity cannot be formatted. The others can. No mather which size I do.
About a testserver, I added 4 x 4 TB to a VM (VHDX-files) and could do parity without problems. So it seems it is this server specific.
As it worked with another controller, I really wonder if the controller could break parity of Storage Pools?
The other weird part is, it sais "Raid" as BUS, but it's set to pass through, in details I see the serial of the attached HDD.
This is what properties shows on this volume. Always RAW.
I also tried Software Raid5 within the server.
This also worked fine. So really only parity.
    Thanks
    Patrick

    Hello NCMead,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I'd like you to take a look a the follow support article, specifically starting at step 5:
Verify that the volume is set to a level you would normally be able to hear.
Ensure that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack or the dock connector.
If the iPhone is in a protective case, make sure that the speaker port isn't blocked by the case.
Make sure that the speaker and dock port aren't clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush. Carefully and gently brush away any debris.
If an audio issue occurs when using a specific application, try testing other applications to see if the issue persists.
If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or car kit:
    Try turning off Bluetooth.
If you experience difficulties with the Bluetooth feature, follow these troubleshooting steps.
    Restart the iPhone.
If restarting doesn't fix the issue, ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
If the issue is not resolved, please contact Apple Support.

  • HT201706 how do I recover a voice memo that didnt finalize due to low battery shut down in the middle of the recording?

iOS 8.1.2 battery on ipod touch died in the middle of recording a voice memo.  Now I found the file but the file wont play and I cant email it.  I get a message that says its being optimized for sharing at this time.  That optimization never happens.  What's up Apple?

However, I doubt yo can do it because file was never closed. A data recovery company might be able to help. It is not Apple fault. You let the battery fully drain. Just like if you were copy a file to a thumb drive and the computer died before the transfer was complete

  • Voice Memo does not work on 3g

The voice memo does not work. If I scream in to the mic it finally shows movement on the readout. But, when you play it back all you get is static noise where I screamed. Other wise, any normal voice speck is totally silent.
Actually it works with the iPhone head phones but not the mic in the phone it's self.

Yes, the low level while recording doesn't result in a low or weak "memo". Sounds fine and mails to my email as well . . . But !
I had a phone-message waiting two months, a little song-fragment I called home to leave with the hope that Voice-Memo would eventually save it for me. And it sounded better once mailed that it even did playing out of my cheap little land-line speaker ( I guess mic-placement is everything ! )
But the recording was 2 min 50 seconds and trying to mail it to myself brought up the warning that it was "too big" !! Luckily, the first 27 seconds was unrelated and expendable . . . and being able to trim it did the trick.
*So what's the size limit on a mailable Memo Apple people ?*
( It was 4.1 mb as attached to the mail )
Also, how odd is it that it was still "Sending" within the iPhone, yet already sitting in my iMac's email well before the "airplane whoosh" of sent mail sounded.
    Hmm . . . . .

  • Voice memo won't show up in iTunes

    The short versoin:
A just over 15 minute voice memo on my iPhone won't sync to my computer while other shorter voice memos do. It doesn't even show up on the playlist Voice Memos on my iPhone while plugged into my computer. I would like to back up this voice memo. More details in the long version if needed.
    The long version:
I have a voice memo recorded on my iPhone that is just over 15 minutes. When I plug my iPhone into my computer this memo doesn't show up in the Voice Memos playlist (sub category of my iPhone in iTunes) while other shorter memos do. I currently have "Manually manage music and videos" selected under my Summary tab and on my Music tab "Sync Music" is unchecked the options "Entire music library" "Include music videos" and "Include voice memos" are checked but grayed out. If I check "Sync Music" it gives me the message that all existing content on my iPhone will be removed and replaced with songs and playlists from my iTunes library. Obviously I'd rather not replace my iPhone's library with my iTunes library as my phone isn't even big enough for my entire library, but I would like to be able to back up with particular voice memo, however it is not syncing to my computer like other voice memos are. Anyone have any advice?

Very odd. Perhaps it might be worth it to do a low level reformat of the iPod's flash storage. Some other users recently have run into the same issue and a reformat resolved it.  It may seem like overkill, but it has been known to work in odd situations such as yours.
Here are instructions for reformatting the Nano.

  • Voice Memos will not sync debacle

This is an open thread many times over yet I see no orthodox solution. Apple, I address this to you. I have hundreds of voice memos on my iPhone 5s. I have over 900 of them relatively safely transferred to my Macbook Pro. But there are still sporadic unsynched/un-backed-up Voice Memo recordings that have not made the journey from my iPhone. They are stuck there. They are taking up all the space. I need them on my computer and they will not transfer. iTunes refuses. Computer says no.
    Include Voice Memos is selected.
What do I do, Apple? What is this strange bug? How does one squash it? Come now, mighty Apple and work your sleek magic... tell me what to do. There is a direction I have neglected to wave my eyes in, or drag my thumb across the surface of some plane... you have stumped my intuition and my logic and my problem solving and I want to throw iTunes into a blender on a star to make the cake of flaming misery, I am so despondent.
This is the meal you'd have me serve my kith and kin.
Where's the big button that makes things work, Apple? Where's that special idiot-proof thing that stops things being dumb?
Please. I beg of you. Mercy, Apple. Have mercy. I need my freaking voice memos, why is iTunes being arbitrary in its recognition of those I would want transported from my phone to my computer?
And sorting them is another matter - please don't tell me I have to wade into my archives and edit tiny portions of these things, rename the files - one by one, to have the program recognise them as something new that it might drag them through the cable to the safe harbour of my laptop and possibly some external drive along the way... Two Apple products joined in holy technonomy by a freaking thunderbolt-usb... whatever the **** it's called cable - I mean for goodness sake - can I not simply migrate the whole freaking bunch of them to a folder? Why cause such widespread suffering and confusion?
Help me Apple. Someone freaking help me. Help us all. Save us from losing our minds to the dementia of iTunes.

When you record a VM, does the VUY meter show the level?
What happens when you try to play the VM? Does it appear to play but with no sound?
Have yu tried the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod?

  • Voice memo volume

I just got an iPhone 5S (had a 4S).  I use Voice Memos alot and am having trouble hearing my voice on the 5S, it doesn't playback very loudly.  There's nothing I wrong with my hearing, I have the volume turned up all the way using the volune Up button on the side, but I still can't hear it very well in the quiet of my house.  I probably won't be able to hear it if I'm out on the street or in the car or something.  Is there something else I can set to increase the volume level?
    TIA,

  • How to transfer voice memos from iphone to computer since iOS7 update

Since upgrading to iOS 7 voice memos are no longer being transfered from my phone to my computer when I plug it in. This was a simple, automated process in the past, now I can't seem to get it work at all. Does anybody out there know if Apple dropped the backup function for voice memos from the new operating system?
Frustratingly, I just spent 40 minutes on the phone with Apple "Support" and was told I was elevated to the highest level on this question. She actually told me that the "sync" process only ever went one way, from the computer to the phone. I asked her if that was the case, how did the old voice memos make it from my phone into the playlist in iTunes (that was created by iTunes for me) in the first place? She actually told me that it never worked that way! Please help!

When I plugged in my iPhone, the memos were not transferred, but when I clicked on "Sync" in iTunes, it created a Voice Memos playlist and my new recordings showed up.
This is the first time I ever tried using voice memos before.  It looks like syncing is done manually instead of automatically.  I got my answer from this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23658301#23658301

  • Convert Voice Memos to Text?

I record all my meeting with my advisor with my iPod using Voice Memo. The meetings last from 30 minutes to an hour. Since it can take a while to transcribe, I was really hoping to find a tool that would transcribe it to text for me. Does anyone know any tools that will do this for me?
    Thank you,
    Susan

Unfortunately, consumer technology hasn't really advanced so far as to take a relatively low fidelity recording (such as that on an iPod) and turn it into text.
There is dictation software, such as DragonNaturallySpeaking, but this software requires practice to get it to comprehend the speech, and it is highly doubtful that it would recognize the recording.
Sorry. Guess it's back to the pen and paper!
