Voice Over and Word 2004

List members:
I can't get Voice Over to read text written in Microsoft Word 2004 for the Mac. Will Voice Over function with all word processors, or is it limited to Text Edit? Thanks for any info.
Mark Pavlick

In fact, though it's quite unpretentious, TextEdit is quite a powerful little beast. If you have a Word 2004 document already, you can not only open and read it in TextEdit, you can modify it extensively, and the formatting will be preserved unchanged—text colour, font, bold/italic effects and so on. My totally blind VoiceOver-using wife translates Word documents from French into English, so the whole text is replaced by other words. When I open them in Word again, they're identical except for the language being different.
TextEdit can also save new documents in Word or Word XML formats if you want, as well as plain text, HTML and RTF.
Don't despair! (But I agree with Bruce—Pages is a terrible disappointment!)

VoiceOver is an Accessibility feature while Voice Control allows you to control the Music app via voice.
To turn off VoiceOver triple click the Home button and go to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn it off. Use three fingers to scroll if necessary.

I want to upgrade to snow leopard from 10.5.8. Im hesitant to proceed because I'm running iPhoto 7 and word 2004. I want to be sure these programs will still run and I won't lose my photos or the events I have ordered them by. Should i make a partition on my new Iomega external and clone it just in case? I'm running time machine and backing up all the time onto an old LaCie, and right now I have a copy of my iPhoto library on new Iomega, which I recopy every couple of weeks. I got the computer new several years ago and it came with iLife and 10.4 OS I think.

Word 2004 is almost 10 years old, you will not be able to upgrade beyond Snow Leopard with it. IMHO you have gotten your money's worth out of the application and need to upgrade to Office for Mac 2011, this will work just fine and read your old files just fine too. What will not run beyond SL are all PowerPC (PPC) apps such as Word 2004. You will need to update, upgrade or replace any PPC based apps you want to use. I would recommend taking a little time and check for updates to each of your apps. Then open System Profiler (Applications - Utilities - System Profiler) click the Applications link on the left and then look for any PPC based apps, those are the ones that will not run. You can upgrade to SL just fine with the apps you currently have however if you want to go beyond SL (it's already 2 generations behind) you will need to update or upgrade your apps. You can take your time doing it but eventually you're going to have to begin

  • Unable to turn off voice over and all of a sudden the touch screen is extremely slow to respond.

I am unable to turn off Siri/voice over and the touch screen is nearly unresponsive.  Brought it to Best Buy to have the geeks look at it and and weren't really receptive unless I ponied up some cash for a service plan.  Was hoping someone could help me out.  Thanks!

    - Next see the following for how to turn off via iTunes:
iPhone: Configuring accessibility features (including VoiceOver and Zoom)
    - Then try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

Are there compatibility issues with Mac OSX Leopard V. 10.5 and Word 2004 11.6.3 when installed on a PowerMac G5? I understand the Leopard upgrade is okay on the later Intel Mac, but what about my G5 PowerPC Mac?

I do not use Microsoft Excel much but when i do use it it works fine on my G5. my powerbook has excel to but sometimes freezes on the powerbook. but not the G5 so give it a try you can always uninstall it if it does not work good

  • Voice Over and Touchtype on Numpad

I am using numpad keyboard for entering amounts. When I am using Voice Over and Touchtype I have to double tap to enter the value but on the standard keyboard I can do the one tap. Is there a work around for this, any help would be appreciated? I don't want my customers having a problem switching how they use different keyboards.

    Hi petes ipod,
Have you attempted to use different headphones or earbuds with your iPod? Does the same issue occur when you do? If so, your iPod Shuffle may need to be serviced. The screen is telling you to connect the iPod to your computer and restore via iTunes.  You may have to also place the iPod in recovery mode in ordrer to allow a restore. For recovry mode:

  • Screen locked with voice over and zero value

My ipad screen is locked with voice over and every time I put in my pass code it just repeats and says zero value.  How do I get into my ipad without having to loose all my data.  Have icloud backup but not sure if that is working properly.Frustrated!

Try triple-clicking the home button and see if that turns it off, and if it does you can then change what a triple-click does via Settings > General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut (or Triple-Click Home depending upon the iOS version).
If that doesn't turn it off then you can either turn it off directly on the iPad to go into Settings > General > Accessibility and turn VoiceOver 'off'. You need to use a tap-to-select and then double-tap to activate/type process and 3 fingered scrolling e.g. to type a digit of your passcode tap the digit so that it gets a box around it, and then double-tap the digit to type it.
Or you can do it by connecting to your computer's iTunes (after typing in your passcode via the tap/double-tap process) : select the iPad  in iTunes, select its Summary tab, scroll to the bottom of that and click the 'configure accessibility' button :
And on the popup select 'none' for the 'seeing' option :
Clicking 'ok' should turn it 'off' on your iPad

  • What is the difference between Macs Voice Over and the text to talk feature

what is the difference between Macs Voice Over and the text to talk feature

Voice Over doesn't need someone to type in the text first. Voice Over works with specific screen displayed information so that a blind person can know where his/her cursor is or what is being displayed. Although it is an application of text to talk it's more than the text to talk feature.
